HoF adjustments

Hey everyone. Periodically, we tweak our Hall of Fame (seen at right) to reflect changes in our membership. Sometimes people leave. More often, new HOTTIES arrive and make their mark.

This is the only blog that honors its most valuable posters in such a public manner. To make the list means you're valued and loved and respected by your HABOTN peers and the thousands more readers who never post.

It's quite an honor.

So here's what we're doing:

PROMOTED FROM 'NOTABLE NEWCOMERS' TO 'FEELING THE HEAT':
ehyou

depressedAUfan
Norm (new identity)
BinOBA
Spongeworthy

Aeronaut
Chocolate Scott

Fearless Freep

IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED:

Also of note:

* Congratulations to all newcomers and the newly promoted. We're glad you're here!

* I have ordered the 'Feeling The Heat' with those closest to RoF consideration, at least in my view, at the top. The only way to make it into the Ring of Fire is to be voted in by current Ring of Fire members.

* I wasn't going to place IV on the list due to his very recent debut, but a few members contacted me privately to make sure IV was included.

I would have been wearing a rat cap a looonnnggg time. I don't think we beat them in anything until baseball my freshman year.

We also had a freshman creed, not creed, I can't think of the word at the moment, that we were supposed to be able to repeat at any given time upon the request of an upperclassman. It went...

"Sir, since every living creature, no matter how small or insignificant, has the right to strive for its existence, I, a lowly freshman, lower than all other living creatures except the rats at Georgia Tech and Alabama, respectfully request the right to live."

I haven't forgot it after all of these years. Amazing.

WOW, JUST WOW. Thanks Jay for the promotion. To think that a simple minded sponge like me is moving up the ranks of the HABOTN. Let me say the following.

Love AU, Hate UA. Love AU cause its not UA. Love AU cause of the experiences I had there, not just the football. UAT doesn't get our love for AU. They never will.

My in-laws graduated from Auburn in 1954 and married the next day. They tell the story about meeting on the tennis courts that were where Haley currently stands. The girls had to wear raincoats over their tennis clothes. They also talk about sneaking into the football stadium.

Steve...Re your 7:21 post. Based on the hesitant, but increasing comments from last years players, it is apparent that Tubs needed to go. It's no secret that I thought him leaving was a mistake, I was wrong. I imagine the constant PTB interference wore him down, but that is no excuse for him to quit on the team or the fans.

My parents used a variation of the rat cap on me. They made me wear a pointy hat with "dunce" on it until i proved I wasn't a moron. I wore that thing until age seventeen, when I stopped wearing it in an act of defiance. My premature removal of the hat is still a sore subject with my dad.

Rat caps were the bomb before my Dad entered AU after WWII. Freshmen also had to carry around a paddle with them all the time, at least in my Dads frat. At any time, an upperclassman could take the paddle and give the freshman a lick. Problem was that all these guys from WWII wouldn't put up with that, and would kick the upperclassmens A.. All that soon ended.

Oh and yes, we had mandatory military training the first two years. That to me was not as bad has also having mandatory P. E. the first two years.

R.O.T.C did take up a good bit of time for just 1 quarter hour's credit; however, I went the Air Force R.O.T.C route rather than having to clean a rifle and polish brass like the Army cadets had to do. We had two class periods a week and drill at 1:00 P.M. for an hour on Thursdays. Ed Dyas, a great Auburn fullback was in my flight (drill unit).

Congrats to all the Hotties that are moving on up.

For the record, it now takes a lot more substance to achieve ranking than earlier days. The original guys were a small, solid group that appreciated and participated in what JGT brought to the blog, but were never able to take the HABOTN to the sometimes present levels of "Life of it's own".

2) Definitely vote for THT in ROF.....his countdown has been superb, entertaining and enlightening

4) JGT, we appreciate ALL of your hard work and late nights.

to the person that was questioning whether to stay in Atlanta for the UAT-VT game or go to our Auburn, always but always take the option to go to Auburn. God has given us only a certain amount of opportunities to go to Auburn. Always go with God's plan.

whatever thread is front and center at 00:00:01 EDT tonight will get the post for Day 15 in the Kickoff Kountdown.

I had to go to Plan B when I could find no evidence that the intended honoree ever wore a #15 jersey (I didn't check pro years). I have no idea what prompted me to pencil him in at 15. The only connection I could find was that at one time, in fact for an entire year, he was 15 years old. And 15 years later, he was exactly 15 years older. However, I believe that could be applied to many former AU football players, so it wasn't enough to keep this fellow at 15. You'll see him soon enough.

Sponge- I don't know how serious these injuries are, but Freeman has not only a "hamstring" injury, but also a big cast that nobody seems to mention. The fact we had Sullen working with the 1st team yesterday and a walk-on as a backup does not bold well. If we are relying on play nickel defense due to injuries and have said such, it scares the dickens out of me. Houston, we have a problem. Sorry, but it's not looking good at this point. We are lucky that we have our "easy" stretch early. I would hate to start off with a bang scheduling wise.

8:40 PM

I take no blame in the Utah loss outside of not wearing my lucky Bama shirt.

The tirade yesterday..I've only read a transcript so I can't comment other than to say that the morons covering UA couldn't hold JGT's jockey scrap ($1.00 to Coach George E. Baker)

8:42 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Saban has proved that he will do whatever it takes to win. Like staggering suspensions to not miss "big" games to this crap. That is one thing I always loved Tubs about and that was that he would not tolerate this crap and sit players, no matter how good the were. I hope Chizik follows in his footsteps on this issue.

8:43 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

One other thing..people act like Paul Bryant was the warm and cuddly old man that he was during his last five years of life. He was as big an SOB as Saban.

The South Central Bell commercial did more to mold this myth than anything.

8:44 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- Thank you for being level headed on the Utah game. I heard people calling in on the Montgomery station saying that they agreed with Saban and that just absolutely baffled me.

As far as yesterday's tirade, he got mad at a guy publishing an incorrect depth chart that he did ot approve. I take it that he knows his players read the papers and the hype and he hates when it is incorrect. I guess is depth chart is so secret that the players themselves don't know where they stand (WHATEVER). That whole thing yesterday was ridiculous.

8:46 PM

Well FSJ, that's not completely true about Bear being just as big an SOB. His assistant coaches loved him. Saban's assistants pretty much cannot stand him for very long.

Cincy- Just reading rivlas and they are saying. Here is two examples:

Seastrunk was 80% and rising about being an Auburn committment. He is now 60% and falling. Most say we lead, but they are not sure. He was supposed to be an Auburn lock, right?

Dyer- 80% to Auburn, but now it seams that he is opening up his recruitment and now not naming any leaders. He is taking a visit to Ole Miss.

Lattimore- Was at one point a 60% lean. He now is 30%.

Fortt- LB from Connecticut, was a 55% or so guy at one point and now he is 20%.

What has all this buzz done? I'm not sure much other than excite us fans to believe things are going to be very different and i'm affraid we may end up playing second fiddle as always.

I hope that many of these guys are just waiting to see the product on the field, but that is a best case scenerio.

What I am really looking for this year is a team that looks prepared. We could go 3-9 and I could still feel better about this season than last. What happened last year was unfair to a lot of kids that put their trust in the coaches to be professionals and lead them.

Last year I was worried that the press and the AU fans were way too optimistic.....just b/c of the Peach bowl win.

This year doesn't look well, but how about let's wait until we play some games before sounding alarms. BTW...sounding alarms will only serve to warn overly optimistic fans and other than that won't change anything.

Just for kicks, go back and look at the SEC preseason picks and compare with the final rankings. The press is more wrong than right in these picks There are just too many variables that occur during the season.

Our injured team could limp through and barely win the first few games, then get some folks back and be actually stronger for hav ing to rely on the backups. It could just as easily go from bad to worse. Unknown variables...and Lady Luck will play a large role in the outcome.

Be good to us Mon...I mean...Darling Lady Luck.

We can officially not go 3-9 and end up with me feeling better than last year. Enough talent is here to go to a bowl game for sure. If they go 3-9, then they most definitely have not been prepared.

I have the suspicion that some of the folks on the side are there out of an abundance of caution.

Some of them are guys they know can play. Others are folks who need the reps.

Eddie, Eddins continues to have problems with his knee. After two or three surgeries to correct what seemed to be fairly minor issues. I saw too where Chizik indicated they were already planning nickle defense, etc to limit number of LB's on field. Problem with that is we are short at Safety and CB. Nothing going our way right now.

Recruiting, I'll judge when I see who signs. So much can happen between now and signing day.

9:26 PM

Your record depends upon how good the other team is. How prepared you are doesn't. Let's face it. We didn't deserve a W for sucking less than UT last season.

9:27 PM

Eddie..I understand the Xs and Os. I'm wondering where did you hear or read that the coaches are already going to that plan. That is a huge development and I'm just wondering about the genesis of such info.

9:27 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Hoopie- I don't disagree one bit. What scares me is the over optomism i'm hearing from some fans. I just believe this year sucess should not be measured in wins and losses. It should be on improvement from week to week with the product we put on the field. Look, I can drink kool-aid with the best of them, but kool-aid is nothing more than a sugar rush that leaves you with a headache. I'm definitely not trying to sound any alarms and the sky is falling, but I think some need to adjust their expectations of what just a successful season should be defined for this year.

I think we will go undefeated.

I am hoping to see what hoopie is talking about. During the first 3rd of the schedule I would love to see a lot of young guys get experience. Playing young guys in the first half to get them experience and bringing in more vets when the chips are down. Our schedule is our ally. We can do some player development early on.

Can someone answer me this question. What goes on in a 14 year old boys mind when he stops up the toilet, but doesn't fix it or tell anyone about it, leaving his unknowing dad to flush it, watch it overflow before he can stop it, then clean up urine for the next 20 minutes. Yes, he was mine. I'm wondering what I fed him that caused this brain damage.

I expect a season on par with Saban's first at Alabama...Record wise that is. Shula's recruiting was overrated....much like Tubs was the past few years of his tenure if u take into account who actually got into school.

Hoopie:

http://blog.al.com/auburnbeat/2009/08/chizik_preparing_for_all_optio.html

"Apparently no one is going to be moving to linebacker.

"Not right now," Chizik said. "Those type of candidates aren't on our team. They're somewhere else right now."

His assessment was not rosy.

"Obviously, we can play some nickel and things to help us. Take a linebacker out and play with two instead of three. Other than that, there's really no other options right now." "

Michael, I agree with you. Undefeated this season. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my big toe right off my foot.

Eddie, don't you think it is possible that possibly a tailback or two or possibly a TE could move to LB?

9:34 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Eddie,

I think you have a great point about the defense.

I actually expect Auburn's offense to be decent, if the QB doesn't get them beat.

The defense will struggle...due to depth & lack of talent at some postions.

Much like Saban's first Alabama team.

9:34 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- No and Chizik flat out said No yesterday on that very idea. Now he could be lying, but I doubt it.

Look, I've heard a lot of talk about a 2000 / 1993 and even a 2004 season. If that is your expectations, I think you need to re-adjust them. I think this team has enough talent to go to a bowl game, but I think much more than that is gravy and should not be expected.

9:36 PM
Blogger IV said...

I think that our first game will be the biggest game of the season, maybe the biggest at Auburn in quite sometime. The way you start can sometimes dictate how you finish. I don't know how the injury factor will play into all of this, but I do know that we have some talent on this team. How this group of coaches overcome the attitudes that were apparently established last year and how they use the talent we have to be our best will be critical IMHO. I know that the coaches have reputations to fall back on, now is the time to show us their abilities and get it on. WAR EAGLE, God I love AUBURN.

Someone call Eric Smith and inform him I am moving him to linebacker. Come to think of it, tell Dontae Aycock the same is true for him.

FSJ- How about this for Irony. Auburn's offense looks good and Auburn's defense can't stop anybody. That could be the case this season.

Eddie ... I see this as a 1981/1999 season with the needle on the positive side at the end.

We're gonna win some, and lose some, but we're gonna like this team.

I believe that.

9:39 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

IV- Team chemistry will be key to any real successs ths year. They must play great team ball and pick each other up when one is down.

9:39 PM

They could also consider moving to a 5-2 defense, which would be unique.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Me too Jet. That is why i'm not trying to say things in Gloom and Doom fashion. This year is all about building a foundation for the future. I've been stating that for quite sometime. I've just noticed that some people lately seem to be loosing that focus and they are only setting themselves up for disappointment.

Boy, I wonder if Petey Smith has any regrets at this point? He is grayshirting at bama and he could be playing at Auburn. Sounds like a great decision on his part.

9:43 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

IV. Agree 100%. A loss in the first game, with the injuries we have now, and it could snowball. Just hope our injuries are not that serious and those kids get back on the field at least two weeks before the game.

9:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie..thanks. Those rivals reports explain the turn to the negative.

I guess Coach Chizik & Co. will get a chance to show us the depth of their coaching ability. It is at least encouraging that they are plannning for it now. It also takes away from normal Fall preparation to have to shift plans. Tuff situation for a new coaching staff.

9:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Look at it this way. If there is one person I believe can mold the players we have into a good defense, it is Chizik.

9:44 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Eddie. What are the odds Petey is actually paying his own way at UA as a grey shirt. What a farce.

9:45 PM
Blogger IV said...

Eddie, you are correct concerning team chemistry. As an oversight on my part, I didn't think about that element in large part because we are AUBURN. That to me says team chemistry.

9:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Petey made a bonehead choice. He would have definitely gotten playing time this season at Auburn.

9:46 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed Hoopie. We've all known that this team cannot afford to have injuries or anything else that affects depth, especially at the LB and OL position. Unfortunately we are having just that. Sorry, that scares me and i'm just trying to bring some realism to what might occur this season. IV is right about La Tech being a big game. Derek Dooley is a good coach and I have a feeling at the time of the Chizik hire, most on here would have rather had him than Chizik. He is no slouch and will give us a run for our money. He took MSU to the woodshed last year, so they are not going to be intimidated by playing us.

Team chemistry has been an issue at Auburn for a lot of years. We have traditionally started out slow and the team would come together after 4 or 5 games. When we have had tough games early, it has been rough.

9:48 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

IV- LOL at the Auburn and Team Chemistry part. I was part of the 1998 team that absolutely the worse team chemsitry of any team at any level that I have ever been apart of. Players calling other players out, defense and offense blaming each other, players and coaches fighting at halftime...I guess i'm a little cynical when it omes to that.

9:49 PM
Blogger IV said...

I for one say that if Petey Smith didn't want to be at Auburn, I don't want him at Auburn. Only Auburn Tigers should play at J-H as far as I am concerned. Don't worry about the one that got away. Make the ones we got better and let them represent Auburn well.

Eddie..it's no secret that I hate wildly negative speculation. For several years now, I also found myself guarding fans against undue preseason optimism. This year I haven't seen uncontrolled optimism, more like hopeful optimism. You are now carrying the less optimism torch and I'm trying to slow you down....there's some irony in there sommewhere.

9:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Team chemistry basically means every player understanding their role and having confidence that they can count on the other players. This is contrasted by when you have no faith and a lot of well meaning players attempting to cover for each other, which usually spells trouble. When players attempt to be superstars rather than making sure they cover their responsibility, team chemistry is lost.

Hoopie- I promise you that I am very optomistic about our program and where we are headed. Trust me, if you are an Auburn fan you are used to disappiontments, especially if you have expectations of great things. I have read some on here, heard from friends and read things on other sites that suggest that a lot of people think this is a 9-10 win team. I'll slow down my train, but I just urge others to keep expectations in check.
