Tyrik is a soft-spoken guy...from the video, anyway.

In case this got lost one of the previous threads...

In Malzahn's offense, he needs a QB that can throw it down the field. It seems that Todd can't do that yet and time has run out.

Good info from Goldberg on AL.com about the low number of scholly players on the team:

How did Auburn get in this fix? Here's the most damaging way: Less than half the players signed in the 2007 and 2008 recruiting classes are still on the roster. Additionally, the normal attrition of losing senior players and losing two players early to the NFL have taken a toll.

Sounds like many of us were correct when discussing the recruiting troubles the last group had.

9:28 AM

•2008 signing class: Only 17 of the 29 players that were signed are on the roster. Some were quickly dispatched to junior colleges. Some transferred or left.

2007 signing class: Fourteen of the 30 signing-day players are still on board. There are some notable names still on the team, like Kodi Burns, Josh Bynes, Ryan Pugh and Wes Byrum, but notable signee Enrique Davis is at Ole Miss, and there's a list of players that have faded from memory

(Give Goldberg tha credit)

9:34 AM

2006 signing class: Sixteen of the 25 signed are still on the roster, including some of the highest-profile players: Neil Caudle, Mario Fannin, Tim Hawthorne and Ben Tate

(Give Goldberg credit)

Highest profile from 2006?! Who in that bunch has played worth a cuss.

9:35 AM

You will notice if you look at the last couple of classes. You will see names year over year which never arrived. That alone is 2 spots for 1 person in 2 yrs.

As I go over the tape from my secret temporary location in the Bluegrass region KY as I mull over moving back to the area, I feel strangely optimistic about the upcoming season. If we can stay healthly on Defense and the OL, then there is a chance for real progress this year, and thus, a very successful.

I wonder if Ben Tate is going to be the back this year to make some game changing plays. Is Eltoro going to knock the opposing teams ##$%$$^ into their watchpockets? Is a quarterback going to emerge or are we in for a repeat of last year? Will the O/L stand up under repeated games against quality and physical competition game after game?

So many questions, so few answers. Jay G, please consult your crystal ball.

9:35 AM

...but Tub was recruiting players who want to come to Auburn.

Wasn't that always his defense when he was asked bout the lack of 4 and 5 star recruits?

Thanks for no anons. Strange you bring it up. A blog I visited the other day was having a poll of whether to get rid of the anons.

I like knowing who is saying what. Yea, someone could have multiple accounts, but there is no reason to make things easy for them.

From what I have read, deep throws shouldn't be a problem for Todd, but it sounds like he hasn't done a lot of them yet.

You are correct that it is required for Malzahn's offense. I am looking forward to seeing one of those long 10 yard bombs.

The bubble screens had me going insane last season and I have even seen Benton running some of those. Hopefully they will be a bit more effective when the defense actually thinks you may throw the ball down the field.

Don't be surprised if Todzilla turns out to have one of the stronger arms on the team.

9:36 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Bubble screens work when there is a threat of the deep ball as well.

Most teams last year knew we weren't passing downfield and when we did, they knew that the ball was going to hang up long enough for their DB's to recover.

In fact, I think the last time we hit WR's in stride on deep passes was Cox's soph year.

when he made that quote, I felt his days were numbered.

Stoked about the new coach and not looking back. I thought that was a good article about the classes AU has brought in over the past few years. 14 out of 30 from 2007. Whatever the reason, that is awful. 16 out of 25 in 2006. no wonder we have a depth problem.

10:04 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I don't think the effort was there in recruiting and in coaching the players up the last couple of years.

Just my opinion, but I don't think that staff was hungry anymore.

10:05 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

We need to be able to run when they know we're going to run. We need to be balanced. You can't win in this league without being balanced. We will just have to wait and see. This may have been our best week of practice yet. The players are looking hungry. I saw good and bad things today.

This has been your coach speek post of the day.

10:05 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Luv,

If the depth doesn't change over the next couple of years then there will be a lack of depth on the coaching staff again.

10:05 AM
Blogger wtc said...

which part will change. The 'stoked over the coaches or the number of players that actually get on the team versus those that are signed.

10:06 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Steve,

We will be able to run this year...not sure about a solid passing game, but I do think we're going to be able to move the ball on the ground.

10:06 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

wtc, the depth problem.

10:07 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am hoping to see things change with regards to recruits and how many actually make it to campus. One thing that may change that is the 28 player limit. Coaches are going to be getting fewer of the guys that may or may not qualify.

Some of the attrition you just can't predict.

10:07 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with RK. I think they resigned themselves to the fact that they could not compete anymore.

10:07 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Depth is not looking to be nearly as big of a problem as I initially thought with this team. Getting Phillips elligible will really help too.

Bates being qualified helped a lot. We may have enough depth at safety where one could move to linebacker now, although I still think we need more linebackers. With linebackers, I would prefer to see us three deep.

10:10 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I also agree that we will be able to run the ball. I think the more improved bulkier o-line will be pretty good if it stays healthy and I really like Ben Tate to have a big year. He still doesn't get much pub, but I think he could have a great year.

10:10 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Passing is pretty (or should be), but nothing gets me more charged up than an overwhelming ground assault, especially when the defense knows it's coming and still can't stop it.

10:10 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The resigning themselves to the fact they couldn't compete doesn't make much sense.

10:10 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think 2005 was the turning point. We didn't follow 2004 up with a great recruiting class then Alabama started off 8-0 and even though we beat them at the end of the year, they pulled ahead of us in recruiting even with Shula as the coach and we never were the same.

10:11 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Tate for 1400 would be sooooo cool!

10:11 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

We will need a decent passing game for the running to work consistently, although I expect to see a lot of triple option football similar to what Paul Johnson runs at Georgia Tech.

10:12 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

I stand by my prediction of Ben Tate with 1,200 yards rushing this year. (Given that he stays healthy.)

10:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

To get an idea of what I mean, watch some of the Tulsa highlights on youTube. At times it is hard to watch because you can't keep up with where the football is. I hope I have that problem watching our offense this season. It has to drive defenses nuts.

10:15 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- I'm thinking along the same lines, somewhere between 1,100 to 1,300 yards. I also think whoever ends up being the 2nd back will do pretty well also.

10:17 AM
Blogger wtc said...

WERK is dead on. Steve you will never give up that fight, and that is OK. My feelings are that the last crew saw the hand writing on the wall and as long as Tubbs had their back, they were not going to change. He had their back until the last minute when he was no longer employed. It's over. You think they worked hard and gave it their all. I think they sloughed off and AU is reaping that process now. Whether you recruit 5*'s or 3*'s it doesn't matter if they don't qualify, quit for whatever reason, get hurt, blah, blah, blah. Bottom line is you have 10 less players on the team than allowed and that is not a great statement about the players the previuos staff assembled during the waning years.

10:18 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Luv, I think believe as WERK, if the wins come, the attrition will slow down and AU will sign and fill it's alloted limit. I do not expect them go after many that do not make it in. This year they needed to get bodies in, next year I think they limit that. And I also think the HS players are starting to notice that classes are filling fast and they need to have their grade in order by their junior year and not have to scramble their senior year.

10:20 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Don't get me wrong, I think Tommy could still be a successful coach at Auburn, however that staff needed to be gutted and he wouldn't do it. A new staff might have fired him up and kept him motivated.

10:23 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

This last recruiting class has had significant attrition, but I think it has a lot to do with when our coaches showed up and the players we lost due to the coaching change. I expect ChizCo to do better with the upcoming class.

10:24 AM

Mario Fannin is the most dynamic of the returning athletes. Getting him the ball is imperative to success this year.

10:24 AM

I don't really understand your point, WERK. Tuberville is no longer at Auburn so it is pretty pointless.

10:24 AM

My point is that the previous coaching staff was either complacent or getting complacent. A change was needed either a turnover of the assistants with a new staff under Tub or getting rid of everyone. A change was needed.

The topic was about recruiting and how we have gotten to the point we are with depth. Steve, you and I disagree on this topic, however it's not pointless to discuss how we have gotten to where we are now no matter who is currently the coach or not.

I know you like to drop the "Tub isn't here anymore so it's pointless", but it will be a topic for a long time to come.

Asleep at the wheel? The is pretty bizarre. We were favored to win the west last season. We had two good seasons prior to that with him "asleep at the wheel". Pretty bizarre comments.

Why continue to criticize past coaches? What is the point of making Auburn coaches, players, and fans look bad. Have we really become the whining spoiled impatient fans that so resemble those of another institution in the state?

PF, that is really hard to say. We lost current players as well as recruits. Which would we have lost anyway?

My guess is that Marks was gone regardless. Powers would have likely stayed.

Jermaine Johnson would have likely stayed.

Ray Cotton would have likely been here, but Tyrik could be just as good or better.

Blackmon may have stayed, although I doubt he would have ever lived up to his potential.

There were a couple of offensive linemen that left, but I can never recall their names.

We would have likely gotten Petey Smith.

It is just hard to say. You really can't blame the new coaches for this. They did well for the time they had.

We would have likely had a recruiting class that better fit our needs, but that isn't a good enough reason to keep a staff. That should never figure in to the decision of whether to keep someone or not.

11:13 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Peter-Not as much as some think if you mean 'just lost due to the old guys leaving.' I think we lost a few becaue the new guys did not want them. So I don't put that in the category of'lost due to regime change.'

I will say I liked Tubbs alot and if he had changed the whole staff, I wanted him to stay. He didn't and it cost him. SO be it.

So, now lets bash the 2006 team. How about come up with a list of Auburn players who suck? That should be very productive.

I am not certain of what changes CTT would have made. Obviously had recognized the need for change when he got rid of Borges and hired Franklin. I just think he changed the wrong thing. Borges was a very good coach.

Go back and look at some of the other records of great coaches in Auburn history such as Mike Donahue, Shug Jordan, and Pat Dye. Which never had a season like last season?

by the way, at the risk of getting bashed for ignorance, what is a Beasley post?

11:18 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Steve, I'm not blaming anyone, just wondering what a regime change costs a program nowadays in terms of number of players. I'm not sure that that can be identified, though, as the real story doesn't always get out. WTC, I'd include the guys the new coaches don't want in that. Again, not blaming, just curious to see.

11:18 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve - May I ask why you are taking this personal?

The discussion is about what looked to us "fanatics" or fans as a "we will get what we can" mentality for recruiting. This all stems from the previous discussion of why there are only 75scholly players on the roster. Which compliments the, "we didn't capitalize on the 2004 season"

All which is relevent in the 2009 season with our lack of depth. A mentality change is what was required after not leveraging great things that happened. That led to the relief of Tubs.

11:19 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Peter- I would say every regime change that starts with a coach being fired will probably lead to 5-10 players not returning that were eligible to return. Tubs had very similar attrition.

I don't know, Big Bird.

Ok. I am switching back to my game predictions. Much more productive than this.

Yes, I am calling for the UT upset of Florida. 21-20. It can happen. Remember the (now much maligned AU 06 team) had "no chance" i the swamp and got it done. I think Kiffin is greatly underestimated and that team is loaded with talent everywhere except QB. Bama proved you don't need one of those to win last year.

Further, I think UT beats Auburn 27-10. They owe us one and are primed for it. We will still be finding our way at that point, I believe.

Beasly Post- I'm guessing because Steve had the 88th post of the thread, he had the beasley post.

HH- I want whatever you're having with the UT beating Florida thoughts. I, like you, believe that Tennessee will have a good year and have stated it here, my blog and on my podcast, but no way will UT beat Florida. Florida is so much better on both sides of the ball and they are playing at the swamp. OH, Urban also proved last year that if you call him out, he will respond, see the UGA game last year.

LSU 25 - Alabama 16

LSU is better than they showed last year and Alabama is as overrated as you can get in my book.

Plus, I hate Alabama, so picking them is against my inner peace bringing center.

Eddie, UF beating the crap out of UGA had less to do with Urb's vendetta over the end zone incident, and more to do with the fact that UGA was injury ridden, unprepared, beaten down, and uninspired by that point. That doesn't mean that Urb won't try to put 100 on the Vols if his team is able, though.

11:34 AM

I agree Eddie. Kiffikin is going to be referring to Urban Meyer as Sir after this.

LSU, Arkansas, and us are the teams I see the most improved this season, although LSU will likely out shine the rest.

UT, to me, is a wildcard. The biggest issue I saw with Fulmer was team discipline. Hiring a coach that needs someone to discipline him isn't exactly the approach I would take to correct the situation. On the other hand, Kiffikin did a good job of hiring a quality staff.

I hate to agree with Herbstreit, but 7-5 does seem like the most likely record for us and he is also right about the schedule. We could start out on a win streak but have a serious problem the second half of the season.

The schedule is actually in our favor because, hopefully, it will give us a chance to develop a consistent offense that is consistent in a positive way.

Bashing ex-coaches is a loser-Bammer trait and not what endeared me to AU.

It smacks of either low self-esteem and you are trying to make yourself feel better by bashing others instead. OR.... It is ignorant Bammer arrogance that somebody must be blamed for our present woes. Our present situation was caused by a lot of deep problems at AU. An unmotivated coaching staff..maybe so, why were they unmotivated? That cause is still at AU.

These issues aren't going to be resolved by AU fans...only PTB attritition. It's best to not look backward and blame. At least for now, we should all be on the same page...how about let's focus on that.

Peter- That is what I was trying to say. Motivation to win a game is over-rated to a certain degree, but if Urban gets the chance to pour it on, he will, just like he did to Georgia when the game was over and then called timeouts at the end just to make them suffer longer.

FSJ- I agree about Ole miss and I agree that the West will be won in the bama-LSU game.

Mrtommy- I agree about the schdule of those three teams.

Steve- I disagree because I can't agree with everyone, and you are always odd man out for me :)!!!!!!

gotcha. i'd love to see it, though FSJ. my goal was to have a photo of every AU All-American represented in my room. i've been able to obtain signed photos of all but 10 living/dead AU AA's. it's pretty cool. even my wife likes it and she's picky as heck. i've only got wall space for a few more. after that we'll have to get a bigger house.

I have made a conscious decision to not have any Daniel Moore pics in my man cave. That is too obvious.

Instead of the Moore painting of the Goal Line Stand for instance, I have a framed copy of the Sports Illustrated with it on the cover. I'll upload some to Flickr sometime today. I still have some stuff to do. I want hardwood floors and a flatscreen to go along with my old style big screen so that we can watch multiple stuff without having to do the picture in picture stuff.
