Practice notes, 8/26

Hey everyone. We'll do this in two stages.

STAGE ONE
  • Craig Stevens said he's been impressed with how LB Adam Herring has been playing. The sophomore participated in a full practice Tuesday for the first time since November.

  • Tyrik Rollison was back at practice today.

  • Gus Malzahn is refusing to discuss who all is working at that "3" position that Mario Fannin allegedly owns. "We've got three or four other guys that will be in that role. And it goes back to what they do best. And really, I don't want to be real specific because that will have a lot to do with what role they play in certain situations."

  • Ted Rüf, aka Roof, said he's been impressed with walk-on LB Wade Christopher. ``He's a guy that always knows what to do and he's always available and always willing. You ask, 'Can you do this?' He says, 'Yeah coach I got it, I know what to do.' As a coach, you have a lot of confidence and respect kids like that."

  • Stevens on TB Onterio McCalebb: ``It's hard trying to catch him but once you get him, you know he don't feel you because he's light. The problem is just catching him. If you catch him, you'll put something on him."

    STAGE TWO

  • Ted Roof on being physical vs. not getting injured: ``I think we've struck a pretty good balance, but we're not where we need to be yet from that standpoint. We're a work in progress there and that's something we have to continue to work on. And that's certainly a point of emphasis."

  • Roof said he has the defensive depth chart 91.3% finished. ``Things clear up, but there's different situations that come and go by packages. You don't want to ever have people feel like they don't have a chance to compete and earn playing time. We look at all the tape from all the kids, whether they're scouts or whoever, so that's something we keep a beat on."

  • Big Snacks Berry on Auburn's 2009 offense vs. its 2008 offense: ``It's more of a run offense. We're still running a fast tempo. Last year, we started off throwing the ball. Now we're straight down running the ball and then we'll take some shots (deep) on you."

  • Malzahn on Onterio McCalebb: ``He can be a one-play drive type guy if we can get him in the right situation."

You are right J-Z, frantic pace. Too much for the old man. Time for lights out on Sycamore Drive. I hope each of you have a peaceful night and you awake to orange and blue sunshine. May you have inner peace, have those that you love close to you and may your aggravations in your daily tasks be few. I ask God to bless each of you as he continues to bless me. I ask him to bless our great country and protect us from those that would do us harm. I ask that he continue to let freedom ring from sea to shining sea. I ask him to keep his hand upon my heroes serving all over this globe. I ask him to protect them, keep them safe from harm and send them back to their families soon. I ask that God bless our beloved Auburn, let her continue to shine in her glory. Please also keep us true and faithful Auburn women and men. So good night to all of my new found Auburn family. I send you my Auburn love. Goodnight.

First order of business is a post-script for Kickoff Kountdown Day 12 - Somewhere along the way I accidently removed a name from the list and didn't realize it until today. So a belated Day 12 Honorable Mention to Caleb "Tex" Warrington, native of Dover, Delaware, and ALL-AMERICAN center for Auburn in 1944. He was a one-hit wonder as that was the only year he lettered at Auburn. Difficult times, those war years.

Now on to the business at hand.

T-MINUS 9, YES NINE DAYS TIL KICKOFF!!!!!!!!!

Can you believe we've made it to single digits?!?!

All-SEC honor or Fan Favorite? I'll let you, the fans, decide.

HAPPY POWELL-DAVIS DAY!!!

Tommie Powell - Greenville, AL, native lettered in 1983-86 and made First Team ALL-SEC Free Safety in 1985, a year in which he led the Tigers with 6 INTs. His biggest game was a 3 pick effort in the 1985 blowout loss in Knoxville.

Tristan Davis - East Point, GA, native who changed positions more than he did jersey numbers (the latter from 27 to 9). He played safety, kick returner, running back, and probably 5 or 6 other positions I don't recall. Tristan was a huge fan favorite who exploded onto the Auburn scene in 2005 with a 162 yard rushing game on just 8 carries against the Kentucky Wildcats. His career 27 yard average on kickoff returns (min. 25 returns) is an Auburn record. He had an ~97 yard kickoff return against Arkansas which I think was negated by non-contributory penalty. Unfortunately, his full football potential was never realized at Auburn due to repeated injuries. But we still love him!

Honorable Mention: Roger Pruett - Place kicker and punter who lettered in 1971-73. The first two years he backed up Gardner Jett and David Beverly at those positions. He earned his 15 minutes of fame as the team's leading punter and scorer in 1973, piling up 17 PATs and 4 FGs as part of an offensive jugger...NOT!

Mention:
Anthony Mix - Bay Minette native and sometime wide receiver, some time tight end, and occasional kick returner. Mix had a great play in the 2004 game at Mississippi State; he broke free from a standing room only crowd of defenders and then outsprinted all of them to the end zone on the 58 yard scoring play. You can read about his high school and early Auburn exploits here and pro efforts and alleged misdeeds here.

Ken Alvis - Demopolis native and Free Safety had two INT returns for touchdowns in 1994 as a redshirt freshman, including the first of FIVE 4th quarter INTs Auburn collected vs Jamie Howard and LSU in that famous 1994 Auburn win. BTW, what is it about LSU and their doofus play calling? Auburn's offense was absolutely pitiful in that game, gaining only one first down in the second half, and scoring only 3 points the entire game. But Auburn's defense outscored the LSU offense 27-26 on that bizarre day. 1994 was Alvis's only year of competition at Auburn. He subsequently transferred to Troy, never to be heard from again. Ok, I'm just kidding. I just don't have any knowledge of his LAA (life after Auburn). JayGT is going to have fun fixing this one, btw.

Navy Blue Pants, Orange Jersey and Navy Blue Helmet.

Jersey B:
Navy Blue Pants, Navy Blue Jersey and Navy Blue Helmet.

Working in the equipment room, I was able to see Navy Blue Pants prototype and a navy blue helmet prototype. I NEVER saw an Orange Game Jersey, just QB Practice jerseys. We have 8 homes games a year, why can't we change it up for 2 of them a year, an OOC game and an SEC Game.

Tradition is bamerish, in with new out with the old.

The navy blue helmets are sweet. You would have to have seen them to appreciate them.

Orange is my favorite color, but I also love BLUE. Why discriminate against Blue. It's done nothing wrong. I'm all for orange jerseys and changing it up.

Don't get me wrong, I love our home uni's, and suggest they stay for a majority of the games, but what is the big deal in changing it up? You can't tell me it wouldn't excite the players. You know it would. Our away Uni's are my favorite. Too many people set in their ways when it comes to uniforms and "tradition". By the way, Auburn used to have different uni's back in the days. I wonder if the school got as much flack for changing them up to what they are now back then?

7:47 AM

I like tradition and wouldn't be averse to team occasional wearing of former unis, i.e. the navy pants, orange jerseys, and navy helmets. I think that used to be an official AU uniform. But the orange jerseys and white pants, I don't know if that was ever official, and if it was, I hereby declare it null & void and stricken from the book.

THT- I agree for different reasons. I think it his half butt if you wear white pants and orange jerseys. I'm not a fan there. Georgia should have worn black pants to go with the black jerseys, that would have been so much cooler than the famous "silver britches", black jersey and red helmet.

if anyone thinks the Chiz is going to do anything to mess with AU's tradition you're nuts. the man can't stand a crooked helmet, much less changing our uni's.

Please describe your rendition of the navy helmet. I simply cannot imagine a navy helmet. Is it plain with just numbers like some ugly ones I know. Solid, striped, two-toned, logos??? Give!

Morning Hotties - another long and boring day followed by a red-eye flight home is on tap for me.

IV, J-Z & whoever, since the game is practically in my backyard, I'll be at the Prattville game this weekend too. I'll be the good looking guy who may, or may not have his wife and small son in tow (8:30 start is pretty late for a boy not yet 3, come to think of it, it's pretty late for me).

Missinit- The version I saw was a sparkly navy blue helmet and it looked dark navy blue. It had the same setup as our current helmet, except colors were different. The AU Logos was an Orange AU (Instead of Blue) with White Border. The center strip was White instead of Blue and the two strips that ran alongside the main center strip were Orange instead of Blue. It looked really good. I was very much impressed. Would have love for their to have been more than one at the time so i could get one myself.

Norm, I will be there and I am glad you mentioned the game time, I had been wondering about that since they told me when I purchased my ducats at the HS that it was the second game of a DH and would start after the end of the first one. Well duh, I think I could almost figure that out. Good football team, but I wonder about the teachers. Do you know if the the team that is listed on the tickets as Byrnes playing in the first game is the S. C. team that Marcus Lattimore plays for? If it is, I will get there early and catch some of that game.

You know TarHeel, I felt that way last year with the exception of what I saw in the practice videos that JGT shot last year. Atleast this year they are actually practicing at speed. Couldn't figure out the little tippee toe thing the receivers and QB's were doing either especially that close to the game. I'm sure there was some kind of technique thing he was trying to get done, but umm maybe a little practice like you play thing would help?!?

I am a tradition guy myself. Coach Jordan created the game uniforms for the most part that the team wears today. There have been minor modifications. The unis that they wore before CRJ were just okay IMHO. But you mention blue helmets and I think of the ones that Fla. used to wear and they were horrible. I do think that the navy blue helmets that Eddie described sounds intriguing. I would have to see them before I could say I could them much love. The only change I might could go with would be navy blue pants with the current white travel jersey but too many of you think that the all white road unis are your favorites so I say no drops, no change.

I have just spent the last hour looking at old Gloms online. So much fun! Anyway, every team I saw from 1933 until now had dark jerseys, light pants and white helmets. Well, except for the helmets that were leather. I haven't been able to find any where they wore navy pants or navy helmets. It is very interesting looking at these pics though.

I believe at some point, one offered the notion that "Tradition is Bammerish." I believe it was Eduardo, in whom I hold in the highest regard among all HOTTIES.

I respectfully disagree. The tradition of entitlement is Bammerish. Auburn has traditions we all embrace -- Tiger Walk, a Toomer's Corner rolling, etc. And we should embrace them.

As to the uniform, it marks us. It's our identifier. To me, those that monkey with the uniforms are searching for an indentify becuase they have none.

An all-white look for some home games? That's cool with me because the white on white look is classy and it is ours.

Using a uniform change to excite the player strikes me as giving a child candy after 8 p.m. It'll make 'em happy, but creates more problems than positive benefits. Now we get stuck in the rut of having to use it as a "motivational tool." Play all the music in the locker room and even over the loud speakers that stokes them up, but those white helmets, navy or white jerseys, and white pants have stood the test of time for nearly 60 years.

I've said enough.

I have absolutely ZERO tolerance for using uni change for motivational purposes. That's the job of the coach, not the clothes.

However, I would not mind, perhaps at HC or against other cupcakes when motivation would not be a perceived reason for uni change, if we tried a former OFFICIAL AU uniform look.
