Quick Note on Eric Smith

Hey everyone. Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones, a friend of the blog, said Auburn tailback Eric Smith surrendered to authorities at 2:40 p.m. today.

He was booked (and soon released on bond) at the Lee County Detention Center on a charge of third-degree assault. That's a Class A misdemeanor. He also has been charged with disorderly conduct, which is a Class C misdemeanor.

His court date is scheduled for Nov. 5.

Cincy - Shane wrote a list slamming media personalities and Brando was one of them. Brando read it on his show and was obviously quite flustered by it. So, in Jerry Springer fashion, Brando was on to have it out with Shane.

I must say I was most disappointed that Shane got the better of Brando.

Earlier, when I mentioned that I don't see much chivalry today, I was referring to the teens-twenty year-olds I see in the media and out in the world. My friends and personal group embrace chilvary or I wouldn't associate with them.

Steve mentioned earlier that chivalry included doing the right thing regardless of the legal consequences. Unfortunately many of the chilvarous acts throughout history that involves defending someone will now get you thrown in jail, kicked off of a football team and probably sued. Today's only allowable versions of chilvalrous defense seem to be that you can either verbally defend someone or call the po-po. We can thank the attorneys for that.

T-minus 11 days til kickoff!!!

Wow. There's way too much talent for this day, so let's get started. Just remember the rule... Academics come first.

HAPPY WILLIAM EUGENE CODY DAY!!!

Bill Cody was born in Greenwood, MS and arrived at Auburn via Orlando, FL. He was one of Auburn's most outstanding linebackers. "Wild Bill" was a unanimous selection to the 1963 All-SEC Sophomore Team. He was first team All-SEC linebacker as a junior, and again as a senior. He was also first-team ALL-AMERICAN as a senior in 1965. Similarly, the Education major achieved Academic All-SEC honors in 1964 and 1965, and ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN in 1965.

LET'S CALL HIM TWO TOUCHDOWN CODY
On October 30, 1965, the 7th ranked Florida Gators entered Cliff Hare Stadium with junior QB Steve Spurrier at the helm. Auburn fell behind 10-0 at the half, not earning a first down until less then 3 minutes to go in the half. I'm sure Coach Jordan had some encouraging words for his team in the halftime locker room. The Tigers, behind the leadership of second string QB Alex Bowden, quickly matriculated down the field for a TD early in the 3rd quarter. On Florida's first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Bill Cody graciously accepted a Spurrier pass and returned it 29 yards for a score. In the 4th quarter, the Auburn defense pressured Spurrier into surrendering the ball, and All-American Cody pounced on it in the end zone for another TD. The Tigers ate the Gators up that day, 28-17.

After completing his Auburn education, Bill Cody was drafted in the 5th round by the Detroit Lions. After one year in the Motor City, he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in their expansion draft. He spent 4 seasons in N'awlins. He didn't play in 1971, but apparently was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings. Records show he was traded from the Vikings to the Eagles prior to the 1972 season for the Eagles' 1973 10th round draft pick; Cody spent his final pro year in Philadelphia. I know he spoke last year at an Auburn Club meeting that also featured Coaches Tuberville, Rhoads, and Franklin. Otherwise, I'll have to rely on the Hotties to fill us in on Mr Cody's current whereabouts and activities.

SUPER HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Karlos Dansby - All-American linebacker in 2003 and two time All-SEC, Dansby was a finalist for the Butkus Award and was named the Atlanta Touchdown Club Defensive Back of the Year. He was the field general of Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik's 2003 Tiger defense which ranked 5th in the country in total defense. Mr. Dansby is currently a NFL star with the Arizona Cardinals.

Travid Tidwell - Born: 2/5/1925 in Florence, AL, Travis Tidwell is one of only two freshmen to ever lead the nation in total offense, earning that honor in 1946. He also led the nation in total offense as a senior in 1949 and was Auburn's career total offense leader until Pat Sullivan established a new standard. As a quarterback in the T-formation, Tidwell engineered the Tigers to an Iron Bowl win over the heavily favored Tide in 1949 by the score of 14-13. He was a first round draft choice of the NY Giants. In his 1950 rookie season, he entered a game with the Giants trailing the Baltimore Colts 20-0. Mr. Tidwell led the Giants to a remarkable 55-20 comeback win. He spent two seasons in NY, then played in the CFL, coached at Auburn, and later sold insurance and stocks and securities. Travis Tidwell was the first Auburn player to be named Senior Bowl MVP. He also played centerfield on the Auburn baseball team which also featured 4-sport star Erk Russell as first baseman.

In the 1949 game vs Mississippi State, Tidwell ran over a DT by the name of Jerry Clower, dragging him 27 yards and rendering him unconscious, all the while reportedly running backwards. You can listen to Jerry Clower's version of the story starting at the 5:50 mark of this recording.

Phil Gargis - outstanding veer option QB who led Auburn in rushing and in total offense in 1975 and 1976. He had a fantastic game vs UGA in Auburn in 1974, one of many memorable trips I took with THTSr to watch the Tigers play. I think Gargis had 160 yards rushing that day in Auburn's nail-biter 17-13 win.

Stan White - 4 year starter and Auburn's all-time career leader in total offense and passing yards. Stan also earned Academic All-SEC honors in 1993.

Mac Champion - earned a letter and a national championship as backup QB in 1957.

WARRRRR EAGLE!!!
GO TIGERS!!!

Thanks for the history lesson THT. It was great and I loved the Jerry Clower audio. I would have gone with Travis Tidwell, but you could have picked several of those guys. Karlos Dansby also had the only highlight of the 2001 Peach Bowl with his leaping interception and lateral as he was falling out of bounds to Dontarious Thomas.

The lowlight of that game, while it was 16-3 UNC in the 4th quarter, Daniel Cobb has us in the Red Zone and fires a bullet to Tim Carter, who ducks out of the way of the pass thinking it was intended for Lorenzo Diamond was was cutting across the field 5 yards behind him.

Take this however, but the term "Christian" was used to ridicule those who followed Jesus. Now it's just the everyday term used. If you show people the "names" don't bother you, then they lose their negative meaning.

Eddie... I have mixed emotions about the CC shirts from Tiger rags. I would rather hear what you younger folks think about the issue and learn from you. It is for sure that Tiger Rags did it for one reason only, to make money. I think they will sell some. Will it have been worth their effort? I don't know. But I say if you don't like it, don't buy it and give them hell for doing it. Boycott them in the future if you like. They have been a game day tradition for some time. If business falls off, they will get the message. So you younguns keep sounding off, this old man loves being able to be here and hearing what you have to say.

8:02 AM

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It would be the same as if a Bama merchandiser created "Toothless hillbilly rednecks and proud of it shirts".

Bryant for years held us down, and used that term in derogatory fashion against us, and now we have shirts that glorify that phrase? I'm sorry, to me that just says "hey they were right, we are just a small spot on the map and insignificant to the other big school in the state."

You don't embrace oppression in any form.

8:07 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all...that T shirt is UGLY, but I think that is the isssue for many AU folks.

When I was a Bammer, I could never understand why AU fans get all low self-esteem, whiny and defensive because of the CC term. The only reason Bammers use it is because of the AU poor reaction.

Bahr plagerized the term, so go ahead Bama use it.....remind us again how Bahr cheated.

The AU farmers I know are wealthy and have more land, belongings and tangible family history than most any other Alabamians. Those same farmers employ Bammers to do their sweaty work. Most of those farmers spend their time purchasing and selling goods....oh and managing their money.

I haven't run into a single Bammer that has had an intelligent comeback, once confronted with this argument.

I say...come out of the closet....we should be proud of our agricultural heritage and those AU farmer families.

I say blame TigerRags for the ugly T shirt, not the concept.

8:09 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Saban could tell the Bammer fan base they were all toothless arrogant rednecks and the next thing you know there'd be t-shirts, baby wear, and Daniel Moore prints.

Oops. Just as I started out the door I thought of one more thing concerning the CC issue and just had to come back and say it. Coach Jordan never made a derogatory remark about the bahr or any other coach or his school. Coach Jordan wanted to beat your tail in football, but he never wanted to humiliate you. He respected you as his foe, he never had to stoop to the level that I speak of. He was widely known for his being a gentleman that would put forth his best effort to beat you on the field of combat but be there to shake your hand and recognize your effort afterwards. You can have Coach Bryant and his three hundred and whatever wins. For me, I like it Shug style. That will be one of the very few times you will ever hear me refer to Coach Jordan as Shug, I have too much respect for him.

Jay G,

I noticed that you've provided hyperlinks to the profiles of a couple of our RoF members. Would you be so kind as to add a hyperlink to Michael's name that sends the unsespecting clicker to the Jan Terri youtube site?

Also, can we get rid of the "All Auburn All Orange" campaign. Like the interlocking coach / player entrance, it has run it's course.

surely you jest, Mr. Maisel

There has been excitement for several months at Auburn and Tennessee over the new starts that both program undertook. And then last week Tigers coach Gene Chizik named Chris Todd the starting quarterback. And then Monday Vols coach Lane Kiffin named Jonathan Crompton the starting quarterback. They're the same guys as last year. That's what August does. You go from, "Things will change!" to "Will things change?" Reality can dampen excitement.

I like orange. It's one of our colors. That, and [navy] blue.

I love Orange too, but why discriminate against Blue. Time to show Blue some love too. Our colors are Orange and Blue, not All Orange and not All Blue.

I do like the coordinated fan look in the crowd. It's just impressive to see a sea of unity at a home game.

Prior to 1999 or 2000 it was a hodge podge of blue, white, orange, gray in the crowd. It's impressive when you can get everyone one the same page and get that stadium rocking.

RK- I don't disagree, I just wish we would have a little of both. I think a sea of Blue would be awesome as well. When is the last time anyone has seen an oragne sea? :)

Whatever color the sea is, it will never match the effect masters of the monochrome stadium (Penn State) produce.

so y'all want to sit in a room with me while I read stuff to you that i find on the world wide web?

maybe I can find that early '60s AU Homecoming family movie and get out the old 8 mm projector. Yes, I still have both, and yes, the projector still works.
