Today's schedule
Hey everyone. Today begins the slow trek toward The Season Opener because it's Reporting Day.
(Pictured is the cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon album. It includes my theme song for today: "Time.")
Veterans will be made available around 4 p.m. for chats about tackle football and other things. I'll provide a video and plenty of blog notes afterward. I expect the written word to appear here around 6.
Video around 8:30.
I gotta write for the newspaper, too, so I put video last on my list.
Stop by and check us out.

Props for the Floyd cover
Also: I'm now making THT's Jersey Day entry a HABOTN feature.
Very nice. My favorite 32 has to be Stacy Danley.
Jay G., when you see players you know to be particularly funny or "different," do you hum "The lunatic is on the grass" to yourself?
I would. Just saying.
Awesome. It sounds like football season has now officially started.
Thanks for the Jersey Day stuff THT and JGT!!
Man, THT makes the big time. Why didn't my Chris Todd rants ever make the big time? Yes, you read it here. My Chris Todd rants could have been blogs unto themselves.
I wouldn't classify any of the current as lunatics.
It's been a while since Chris Porter was here ...
Well, never too early for one of these.
Join me tonight on The Gridiron Breakdown at 6 pm CT.
I'll be joined for part of the show by Josh Hathaway of Blogcritics.org fame to talk college football.
I promise it won't be a total Bama love fest.
Call in if you can as well.
I wouldn't classify any of the current as lunatics.
It's been a while since Chris Porter was here ...
Chris Porter - he's 6'5" with the hair 6'9"...
Oops, he draws the foul!
A gritty kid from the streets of Abbeville ...
Is Kevin Smith still attached to a future Fletch film?
I knew he was at one time but it has been a few years since I heard/read that.
THT...nice work.
I took a big step today. I deleted all the Auburn players from my FB friends list unless I knew them personally. I'm trying to cut back on my cyberstalking. I didn't delete the coaches though. I want that imaginary line of communication to remain open during the season. Think Gus will check fb during the games? I hope he does so that he'll know what play I would have called.
J, are you a newcomer?
happy Jimmy Hitchcock day. i never could tell what his jersey number was so thanks for that info THT. i have found it odd the i have seen his name spelled Jimmie & Jimmy. not sure which one he really used. i have an autographed baseball of his when he played with a minor league team out of Oakland he he signed it Jimmie.
want to give a shout to a couple of my favorite #32's, Stacy Danley, Rudi Johnson, and the the pride of Maryville, TN Carl Stewart!
Twitter Slot F Trips, H motion, Zone 32 to him during a game, J
Oops...
That should have read J-Z.
J was my original name until the Z craze of last December/January.
Chris Porter ... idiotic enough to draw his fifth foul six blocks from the basket in the 1999 Sweet 16 game against Ohio State.
I was confused there for a minute, jz!
that was a brutal game Brotha Jet. i actually made that trip up here to Knoxville. i was not a happy guy to leave early.
Here's your burger, Jet.
man, that's making me hungry Sensi. yummy.
Just for you, Scottie B
man, you're killin' me. i'm going to go and heat up my leftovers. i'll try to hold out for 30 minutes or so.
Morning everyone..Well looks like the season has begun...THANK GOD cause the braves suck!
THe phantom and Union Springs rule.
i'm glad i didn't stay up till 1am ET to watch that mess. the last week has been horrible for the Braves.
Anyone think that Aubrey Phillips would have been a good fit in Franklins line scheme?HA!
ScottieB-
It apparently is the Jimmy Hitchcock Award, but his name was Jimmie Hitchcock per the 1930s Glomeratas and contemporary portrait (which I trust over any posthumous references)
It's after 10:30; therefore the lunch MrsTHT packed for me is fair game.
Scottie fell asleep as soon as the braves didnt score in the 7th. Then next inning dude steals second and third then scored on a bloop single...Damn!
Franklin had no line scheme because Nall did not follow Franklin's plan.
At least, that's what I've been led to believe.
Sensi ...
That looks nice. It ain't Hamburger King, but it'll do.
Scottie B ...
I was there ... long trip to the Gump after the game ... made a little more comfortable by the private jet to Bham.
His work here was suspect, but the Blue Murder music was solid in my opinion.
Oh, wait, wrong Tony Franklin.
We should all meet up for the Tiger Walk prior to La Tech. Just an idea...
Sensi,
Kevin Smith has been long removed from the Fletch movie. He dropped out once they wouldn't allow him to use Jason Lee as the new Fletch. (This was before everyone knew him, pre-My Name is Earl.)
Scottie,
I was in Knoxville for that game vs Ohio State as well. Some jackleg behind me kept yelling "Artis Gilmore" every time Porter touched the ball, and "Mama-don't" every time Mamadou touched the ball.
When the Braves loaded the bases up in the 1st with no outs against a pitcher fresh out of AA ball and only got one run and Prado tried to tag up on a pop up to the 2nd basemen and got thrown out at home, I turned it off.
Also, happy Adlai Trone day to everyone.
THT, the ball team ball i got with Hitchcock on it was from the Oakland Oaks. i think it was from 1934-1936. some time close there anyways.
Thanks for the update, RK.
Good morning hotties. Now is the time for
S U B S T A N C E
DO IT JGT
I don't do Tiger Walks. AU 0-2 for Tiger Walks and 0-2 in Orange. I don't do orange, either.
Scottie B- I wish I could exercise good judgement like you. I was up til 1:30 watching Star Trek and Mash reruns (but they were the good ones with McLean Stevenson). Got up at 5 and listened to 2 hours of great tunes...and still didn't do the stuff I should have done the night before. I'm truly pathetic.
Wasn't it iowa st?
With the closed situation of practices, how do you gather enough information for reports, Jay G.?
A trusted source assures me Auburn has placed a billboard sign in Snellville, Ga. ... which happens to be between Atlanta and Athens.
Interesting.
I used to be superstitious about Tiger Walks, but then came the 2004 AU-Ga game and They were handing out the GREAT paper shakers and I thought well I need to go and see the blue and orange cloud rise over the Tiger Walk crowd...MAN THAT WAS FUN!
paulmain - I enjoyed your post, even though I had no earthly idea what it referred to.
You people laugh at Tony Franklin, but one day you will miss him. The one real problem with the Franklin Experience wasn't Franklin at all, but rather Paul Rhoads. Franklin kept setting him up for the dunk, but Rhoads wouldn't take it. All Rhoads really had to do was say "I am genius. Talk to him. He's the idiot you want to talk to". Then everything would have been right with the world.
JG saw it on saturday on Lawrenceville Hwy, also on 85n right before North Druid Hills Road.
OK ... multiple sources now confirm.
Auburn is also between Atlanta and Athens...Auburn, GA. I hope those Georgians don't get confused. I once sent a check to Auburn University Habitat for Humanity. It ended up in Auburn, GA. Took almost a year to get it straightened out.
Lunch break is over. Seizure.
Jay by highs chool grad class has a picnic each year at Brisco Park in Snelleville. I will look for the sign and if I remember my camera I will take a picture. May be too late Sept 26 but I will look.
rk- nice Adlai Trone refernece. I remember he would never play, but be the first to gran the AU flag after a win and run around the field
Hmmm, wonder how much it would cost to get that billboard put up at Sanford Stadium. Perhaps that would be a bit too aggressive.
I will never ever miss franklin..."and that is all i have to say about that."
Franklin had the best quotes of any coach I can remember. It is a wonder Jay and the other sports writers didn't sign a petition to keep him.
Been through Auburn,Ga Scottie...Got a pic with the sign. Not much there.
there's an Auburn, KY north of Bowling Green. i should've visited when i lived in BG but never did.
Since this post has a musical theme, and I missed my chance the other day during the marching bands thread, I want to take this opportunity to commend the 1980 edition of the University of Florida Marchin' Gator Band, for their stirring "Tribute to New Wave" featuring almost certainly the only marching band arrangement of Devo's "Jocko Homo" in history.
Truly, it had to be experienced to be believed.
By the way, in one of the more stranger moves in blogging, the JCCW was creative enough to list the titles of Jay's blogs for a week in his blog. I must say I never saw that coming.
I grew up in Winder, Ga - 5 miles from Auburn, Ga.
Coming home from AU one weekend with a couple of my Frat brothers asleep in the car, I woke them up just as we entered Auburn (GA). Told them I must have taken a wrong turn. They were all looking at their watches wondering were the crap we had been the last 2 hours or so.
There is still nothing in Auburn, GA.
LT
Adlai Trone- Cool that RK mentioned him. He will be your financial guy if you need one. Lives and works in Bham!
The Mall of Georgia is close to Auburn, GA. Does that count?
I have a standing offer to Jerry Hinnen (and anyone else) ... I'll mail a refund cheque if you send a SASE to my Advertiser address:
Jay G. Tate
425 Molton
Montgomery, Ala. 36105
Just want to get that out there as a pre-emptive strike.
You know how football season gets ...
Hahaha, Jay, yea, I am sure that Franklin was a career maker.
So, any chance of Kodi changing positions? We saw him play a little slot receiver last season. Could he end up playing there or at h-back. Inquiring minds want to know.
i'm lost JG, why are you issuing refunds, and is there a cap on how many SASE's you can send?
Kodi will not change positions. If he doesn't win the starting job, he will transfer out, maybe even before the season if he turns out to be 3rd team. That would be my guess.
I'm somewhat tempted to send a SASE just out of curiousity to see what came back to me in the mail.
TWO DOLLARS perhaps?
Kodi is fast, but not WR fast.
He is one of the more off balanced runners with the ball I've seen.
I agree, he'd transfer before playing another position.
Eddie, I can see Kodi transferring, but I don't want to see it happen. He does have talent.
Agree on Kodi, rk.
Would he really transfer? I would think if there is one thing he has learned since being at Auburn, not having the starting job in early August doesn't mean you won't be starting in October.
Besides, is there a QB position in D1 easier to win than Auburn's? If he transfers, he would need to go a division down (lest he get Mustained), and I am not sure if he is all about that.
I just read where Georgia had 104 players report of preseason camp. I wonder what our number will look like?
Well, one thing is pretty much certain. Either Caudle, Todd, or Kodi are going to learn their chances of playing QB at Auburn have dropped to zero very soon.
I disagree, Steve. If we have another season like last year, all three very well might get a start by the end of the season.
I'll refund the exact amount you paid.
Ed McMahon is dead, so don't expect any Publishers' Clearinghouse surprises, either.
By the way, Kodi supposedly runs a 4.5/40, which is faster than some of our wide receivers.
I don't think Burns has the speed to play other offensive skill positions.
I'm with the others: If Burns ends up as the No. 3 option -- or possibly the No. 2 option -- I will expect to hear about a transfer.
That's just my gut feeling. Burns has the talent to play quarterback somewhere. Maybe it's Auburn. Maybe it's not.
michael, if we have a season like last season, jump on the Tyrik bandwagon quick.
I'd pay $50 cash money to see Kodi Burns run a 4.5 40.
Michael- If Kodi wants to play in D-1, he will transfer out before the season if he feels that he won't play this year, or at least won't play much if at all, that way he could use this year as a redshirt year with 2 more years to play. I think it would mean he would have to be burried on the depth chart. If he stayed and played sparingly and then decided to transfer, he would go to the Championship Division IMO.
Burns could play tailback, except we have tailbacks coming out or rear. He probably doesn't have the blocking ability to play h-back.
I'll be home tomorrow. I can't wait.
I had considered the possibility of Burns redshirting, but I wouldn't consider it likely. He should have been redshirted his freshman season. He basically wasted that year.
I was assuming Jay was giving refunds from the save the Franklin fund.
Burns is only a QB, nothing more, nothing less. He is not a RB. He could not take the pounding and he doesn't have the speed needed. He is fast in QB terms, but in a Donovan McNabb type of way.
Steve, no way Kodi could play RB in the SEC. Not in the WAC either.
like rk said, unbalanced runner, can't run through tackles, can't outrun anyone. Fast enough and strong enough to effectively run as a QB.
Burns will not redshirt at Auburn. I would put cash money on that.
4.5/40 isn't slow, but it isn't McCalebb or PPL speed either.
I don't think he can run a 4.5/40.
will fans be able to see the beginings of practice?
I am with you, Eddie. Redshirting would mean having Caudle, Tyrik, Trotter, and Moseley to compete with. It wouldn't seem to be a wise move.
That was his listed speed, if I am not mistaken.
Needless to say, out of Todd, Caudle, and Burns; whoever is lowest in the depth chart is pretty much done as a QB at Auburn.
I understand Steve, but from all i've heard, he is quick, but not quite that quick. I think even Jay G was putting money on him not running it earlier in this thread.
I'll bet my life that Todd is done as QB at Auburn after this season.
If Burns adjusts a couple of things, he can be a decent QB.
Or if our WRs learn how to catch the APFSDS rounds that Kodi flings.. at their feet.
KOdi reacts and runs, he does not read. think, or understand.
way to go out on a limb there Eddie. ;)
I am thinking Kodi gets told he will be a situational player. How he reacts to that, I don't know.
I don't doubt Kodi ran a 4.5 40 at a combine or something like that. That is not outrageously fast or anything.
What he can't do is run through an arm tackle or juke defenders. We have video evidence of this. And when the d ends and linebackers are also running 4.5s, then you better have something else to bring to the table in the SEC to warrant having the ball in your hands.
Scottie, but my luck would have Todd tearing his knee up in the first week and out for the year, applying for the 5th year and getting it. All that would happen if I bet on it.
You have to start with Kodi's fundamentals. I'm no QB expert, but i can see his footwork and things are way off
I'm with you fellers
Gofer everit??
Steve- If Kodi is a situational QB, then he will get killed when he is in the game.
Kodi would have done himself a favor to have found one of those summer camps that tutor QBs. I think the Irons kids father had some kind of camp.
It is possible that someone coached Kodi up in the summer, but I doubt it. I have never read anything about it and I don't think it is something he could do on his own or with the help of teammates. Once you have gotten use to doing things the wrong way, it is incredibly difficult to change.
Eddie, that is basically what Kodi was for the 2007 season.
Eddie - didn't Todd burn his redshirt yr at TxTech?
I don't believe Todd has a redshirt left. Caudle doesn't either. That is why Kodi would be the one to consider.
But I am confused. When did the Kodi love fest officially end. Ever since last season I having been saying Todzilla would be the starter and I thought others were saying Kodi would be the man.
And I am sure there are those of you out there that have already named kids after Kodi, so what gives?
But now is the time for me to announce who really will win the starting job, Brent Poole. Yes, Malzahn if a fit of rage will tell the three stooges to sit and let Poole be the driver.
Dang it, I got here too late to complain about that AU/OSU Sweet 16 game. I sneaked a little liquid refreshment into that game, so by the time it was over, I was pretty intolerant of some of the obnoxious OSU fans. In fact, so much so that it could be argued that I was an obnoxious AU fan (if there is such a thing). I'm sure it was a long ride back to the Gump, as Jet said. I know it was even a long ride back to Chattanooga, where I was living at the time.
But not too late to kill the thread, apparently.
THT- He did, but the NCAA has the ability to re-instate players given special circumstances.
Off topic - I just saw a news crawl on tv which told me Lou Holtz is considering running as a Republican for one of the Florida U.S. Senate seats. That could be interesting.
Holtz did say that he had as much chance of serving in the senate as Auburn had of beating UF at home in 07 so perhaps he reflected on the subject a bit.
then that would be a 6th year which I would not like to see. Aside from divine intervention with Kodi (who is very intelligent and very athletic, just not very quarterbacky, thus far)..
my preferred outcome would be for Todd to have a greatseason with his arm remaining attached to his body, Tyrik either RS or be backup this year and be The Man next year. (I'll catch the Express at the next stop)
THT... Great pick for #32 and great job with the count down in general. I have to give a shout out to my favorite performance by a #32... Stacy Danley vs Ohio St in 1989. Ohio st's DB Thomas (I think) rocked Danley's world on that pass to the flats. I thought he killed him!! One of the nastiest hits Ive ever seen. Danely came back in the 2nd half and torched them for like 160 yards!
I think I have a problem. Here's the deal...I'm riding in my truck back the office and The Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard it in a Love Song" comes on the radio. The first and I mean the very first image that pops into my head is this scene:
Momma Said Knock You Out!
I really don't see how the two things are related at all, but there it is.
I may be wrong, but I don't see Kodi being a successful SEC starting QB, much less playing out of position and being successful.
He has never thrown the same pass with the same form two times in a row from what I've seen.
J-Z - if you have a problem, then so do I. Many times my brain starts out on one topic and just a few minutes later is on something 180 degrees different and I can't remember how it got there. Please don't tell my employers.
J-Z, i often have thoughts like yours when i hear love songs on the radio. give me some Rage Against the Machine or Guns & Roses any day.
Screw a 12 step program!! I've got all the enablers a Man could ask for right here.
Bags made Low's lunchtime links.
I'm spending too much time playing Mafia Wars and not enough time reading the HABOTN.
Shame on me.
BigCat- thanks! Danley, Andrews, and Stewart are all favs of mine. When Stacy got up and trotted off the field in that bowl game I was so freakin fired up I could have suited up and played. That hit was a wake up call. What a stomping AU put on tOSU after that.
I don't know why, but thinking about that hit just makes me want to hate UA-T. Oh yeah, I'm hatin real good now!
I disagree on changing fundamentals. Even longstanding bad ones can be changed, but it takes a lot of commitment.
I played a lot of baseball and then started playing golf without lessons. 4 years later, I finally took golf lessons, truly committed to a golf swing and dropped my handicap by 15 down to single digits. Later on, video lessons helped even more. Kodi has a lot of video available and it hasn't helped so far. If he has recommitted to coorecting fundamentals and film study this summer, then his athleticism can shine, if not...
So kids, it appears I'm free of my self-imposed internet-at-work ban. I cleared it up with the supes, the tattle tale has been overruled in their accusations.
Hoopie makes a good point, I have adjusted my fundamentals over relatively short periods of time playing different games, whether it be tennis, golf or baseball (softball now that I'm too old for baseball).
But then again I'm not the QB for an SEC football team.
Orlando Sentinel reports re: Urban Meyer's contract: "No details of the buyout or any clauses are available through the University Athletic Department."
So, in other words, we learned almost nothing about Meyer's long-term plans yesterday.
Well UF seems to be willing to pay whatever to keep ole Ur-Ban around.
What say you, Jay? Think he's moving on in the near future?
Thanks for backing me there hoopie. when things go wrong and you need adjustments in any sport, you start with fundamentals
Who was ESPN sourcing (oh, wait...) when they announced yesterday that the buyout was only 500k?
Surely UF made it impossible for Urban to leave UF for ND in the new contract. It may not keep him from leaving, but surely leaving to go to ND. It has to...doesn't it?
When was the last time the MA had stories linked by and ESPN guy on back-to-back days?
j-z...
You obviously knew that "Heard it in a Love Song" was also an album by Mark Chestnutt. On that album he covers "You can't find too many kissers", a song written by Hank Jr. Everyone knows that Hank's video "All My Rowdy Friends" prominently featured Willie Nelson. Nelson appeared in the Simpsons on their VH1 Behind the Music spoof. This episode also happened to feature Sideshow Bob, whose voice is of course Kelsey Grammer. Kelsey Grammer is from Ft. Lauderdale the same as Junior Rosegreen.
Your association was perfectly logical.
Why would Urban leave Fla. What other school has a ready made recruiting pipeline that the U of F has. Notre Dame, don't make me laugh that pipeline dried up a long time ago. It would take Myers years to even get close to what he has in Fla, if he ever could.
Excellent analysis ehyou.
Years? Urban did great things for Utah and for Bowling Green (correct me if I'm wrong).
If he went to Notre Dame it would only be a matter of months (12-24)to get that machine cranked back up.
But if it were me, I'd stay in Gainesville. Better weather for sure.
Could be but i don't think he is that magical. Fla seeme to be saying with that low buy out. If you don't like it here move on we can do it with out you.
Hotter women too, Sean.
Seanzie, it's all about the money, though.
They definitly gave him the up front money but did not close or lock the back door
Well UF just sent a bunch of money out the door, hopefully the secured their asset.
Notre Dame would have to pay some outrageous numbers to get him.
Well, some schools are outrageous enough to pay those numbers. Look at USC.
According to ESPN yesterday they left the buyout at 500K. Peanuts to Notre Dame and NBC
I dare you all to watch this and not get a little choked up at least.
I'm actually against buyouts in general. I say get rid of them all and allow the coaches to have free reign. They are only going to move if they have done something worthy at your school.
True Sensi!
ehyou
ehmpressive.
I've heard a lot about "The Blindside", and I can't wait to see it. A very good story and i'm thrilled what this kid has been able to do, especially going to Ole Miss.
If a coach wants to leave let him go he will be worthless if forced to stay
Damn it Sensi...that was just wrong. How'd you know a blonde Sandra Bullock was going to get me all choked up like that?
Digger, you speaketh the truth, take Tub, for example.
I stayed on the Tub band wagon alot longer that most but I had no idea he was that burned out and gave in to the powers to be on his OC selection.
I don't think he did. He just looked for a Pie-In-The-Sky solution. It didn't work.
sensi the blond side looks ausome. cant wait to see it
and a blond sandra bullock is the stuff dreams are made of
I'm fine with any version of Sandra Bullock.

There is a university in Texas named Baylor.

No drops! Hate UAT!
Jet found "A Time to Kill" with Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd to be "A Time to Thrill," except for that extremely annoying Matthew McConnaughey.
here, here
I say we pay the 500K to Florida and give Urban 4-5 million a year to coach let him do the rebuilding.
WERK, I'm good with that as long as he leaves the convicts in FL.
Trivia - Michael Oher played for Briarcrest Christian School, who was my high school's arch rival. Oher started playing the year after I graduated.
More trivia - we beat Briarcrest in the regular season and the state championship game 2 years in a row. Booyakasha!
The Blind Side is based on Michael Oher, by the way. Some people might have found my post random if they didn't know that.
I hope i get those questions next time i'm playing trivia Michael . thanks!
Was Michael Oher mom really a rich hot blond??
yes. i have seen her in interviews. she is an attractive rich hot blonde. with a pretty hot daughter about Oher's age
Oher's adoptive family is Mr. and Mrs. Sean Tuohy. Mr. Tuohy was a scrappy point guard for the Rebels in the late 1970-early 1980s.
Monica, I cannot speak to his calves or any other part of his appearance.
I just remember him distributing the ball to John Stroud, the pride of New Albany, Miss., when Ole Miss had a couple of decent basketball teams.
Was Mrs Tuohy a rebel cheerleader??
Harrison - You're welcome for the trivia. More trivia - Captain Boxhead rejected a promotion to Major because Captain Boxhead sounds cooler.
I wonder if the Tuohy's originally reached out to Oher because he had a weird last name, too.
Boxhead - the promotion to Major worked out well for Captain ****head.
Michael Oher - Soon to be the starting Right Tackle for the Baltimore Ravens!! Whoo Hoo!
norm...
That's some funny ****.
ehyou - thanks. It's versatile too as **** could work for a couple of words which come immediately to mind. I'm awesome. I was tempted to put AUsome but that may tend to reflect negatively on me. But, I guess it's good to be reflected on period because that means I'm not a vampire or ghost.

I thought Mr. Roper did an outstanding job as Cpt. Baker in Bullitt.
I'm waiting for a Twitter saying Michael Dyer is commiting but it hasn't happened yet...blast
New thread up.
Just trying to adjust my profile and adding a new avatar. The things ya gotta go through to change your pic.
