Trott makes a watch list
Hey everyone. Thomas "Tommy" Trott, formerly of Trinity Presbyterian fame, has been added to the John Mackey Award watch list.
The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate tight end.
Trott, a senior, has 34 career receptions for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has played in 39 career games and started 22 of them.
Thirty players were named to the watch list.

Boom?
Or whatever Ted Roof is going to say.
i guess we didn't so so good with a blank slate
Does this mean we can't choose our own adventure any more?
*well
Nope. only tommy trott talk or blocking techniques of tight ends
Well THT it did have the potential to be a full puppet hour thread. Wasn't, but it coulda
Todd needs to fix the focus on his camera.
For my first time being first poster, I am going to award myself a cucumber and tomato sandwich. Everyone else can be on the watch list.
I just clicked on the pick and took a lok at the big pic and everyone is leaning just a little bit to the right. kinda funny.
And congrats to Tommy Trott!! I'm pretty sure that if he wins this, our offense was pretty good.
Looking at the photo attached to the post, I wonder if the LSU defender was flagged for PI on that play?
Hoopie, I wondered the same.
Jaywall, i can do whatever you want as far as shirts or jerseys. you'll have to give me a holla when you figure it out.
Was that a completed pass?
For some reason the dying words of a redneck come to mind: "Watch this".
"watch lists" are less dumb than "pre-season all this & that" lists, perhaps. If a "non-watched" player turns out to be the best TE, is he eligible for the award?
the pass interference was definitely my second thought. My first? Why isn't he focused on the cheerleaders?
i think it was in incomplete pass in the endzone.
The picture was actually pregame warm-ups. LSU's Peterson was ejected from the game for his actions.
I hear that TOMMMY TROTT is a big dodgeball fan (smooth transition).
Why has Dodgeball been removed from elementary school and is not an option for competitive league play?? It should be a chapter or segment in the next "decline of Western Civ." book/expose.
I was very scrawny & quick as a youngster, good attributes to have when our elem. school classes played dodgeball.
Does anyone know what Gabe Mckinzie's status is. He is a much better Tight End than trott in my opinion
it's been removed?!?!? Comm'r, you're right. Our civilization is crashing and burning before our very eyes.
Commish you can no longer have games that allow children an advantage because they happen to be bigger, faster stronger or smarter, or keep any chldren with a disadvantage from participating.
Auburn is in dire need of a big time commitment in the next couple of days.
Welcome and War Eagle, paulmain.
I don't know the answer to your interrogative. But welcome, anyway!
George Carlin had a word for that. Went along with kids having to wear helmets and protective gear for EVERYTHING.
We played dodgeball in PE all the way through 8th grade.... and it was awesome. Who canceled it where? Surely some schools still play.
it's good to be welcomed THT
AU1292 - why is AU in dire need of a huge commitment in the next couple of days? Signing day isn't until Feb.
in DIRE need of a commitment, or in need of a DYER commitment. hhhmmm?????
scottie b, you can do jerseys?
when does practise start
Dodgeball promotes physical fitness and a healthy spirit of competition among yutes.
I'm fine with eliminating antiquated euphenisms for elementary school kids (e.g., "Smear the Queer"), but there's no reason why elementary schools across the country shouldn't be preparing these kids for serious DB competitions using wrenches and other motivational techniques recognized by Patches O'Houlinhan.
I'm on a greyhound bus to Tallahassee at the moment, talk about some weird sketchy people on this thing
paul- team reports Aug 5th, starts on Aug 6th. don't bother going, they will be closed to the public
Michael: Read and weep:
The Painful Playground
Williams, Marjorie. (Wednesday, May 8, 2001).
Now it can be told. Two years after the killings at Columbine High School, two months after the murders at Santana High School, concerned school administrators and cutting-edge gym teachers are at last cracking down on one of the menaces that prey on the psyches of America's young.
The culprit in question is dodge ball -- also known, depending on where you went to school, by such aliases as killerball, prison ball and bombardment. In school districts across the nation, including Fairfax County, authorities have banned the playing of these games in physical education classes, on the ground that they foster aggression and discriminate against less athletic children. In a recent symposium in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Dennis Docheff, of Wisconsin's Concordia University, said, "In today's world, with so many things breeding violent behavior in children, there is no room for dodgeball anymore." A game that uses "students as human targets," says Mary Marks, health and PE coordinator for Fairfax County public schools, "sets up the potential for teasing and ridicule."
The alarm over dodge ball stands at the delta of two rivers of social concern: One is a push within the physical education profession to make PE more inclusive. Given the constricting hours devoted to gym classes across the country, many teachers have a sensible resistance to games that eliminate players, relegating them to the role of spectators for the bulk of the class. This movement deserves applause for its efforts to make gym class more appealing to kids who aren't naturally inclined toward sports.
But the other critique of dodge ball and similar games flows from the perceived crisis of bullying in the schools, highlighted by the murderous reactions of the Dylan Klebolds and Eric Harrises and Andy Williamses who have responded by killing their classmates. This social boomlet subscribes to a Slippery Slope view of the world, in which all manifestations of childhood aggression are seen as potential seedlings of pathology.....

all i have heard is mckenzie is expected to be ready to go at tight end when practice starts. since he was not around in the spring, who knows.
i've always been impressed with him more than trott too. i would venture to say lutz will be the 2nd best TE on the team this year depending on which of those two is better. i don't think CTT&co were able to get the ball in mckenzie's hands like they envisioned when he was recruited and he sacrificed his jr year to DE mostly.
jhag- a buddy of mine rode a bus from yellostone to birmingham. He had some awesome stories
Trott will need Kodi Burns to be the QB so that he can make all those circus catches since he seems to drop the ones in the bread basket. I hope he does well, it would be nice.
if Mckinzie plays, surley this coaching staff will use him on the offensuve side of the ball
AUNugget, i work for a sporting goods company specializing in youth league & school jerseys. we work with every major athletic company except Nike or Adidas. yup, we can do it all. if you want a set of goalposts installed in your back yard i can handle that too. shoot me an email if you have a specific question, brannsm@gmail.com
i got beaned in the head once by the biggest dumbest dude in the class. i had already been eliminated and was not looking. one side of my face was red for like an hour.
i also went up solo against three sr. baseball players (one i think went to MSU on sholly) and took them out.
and i was probably south of 100 lbs my last PE class.
parents and psychologists with and everybody wins agenda today are sissies, not the kids.
Scottie- Can you get me some underarmour gear at a good price?
Eddie, for you brotha....heck, why not?! i can get most everything. take 25% off the retail price. let me know. of course, shipping & tax have to added to. :(
Goalposts in the backyard ...ooooooooohhhhhhyeah
Cool Scottie, i'll be in touch. May get something and try to have you bring it to Auburn to save the shipping, if you would be so kind.
cool. oh, only one snag, though. i can NOT get the stuff with AU already on it. sorry. i've tried, though.
i remember when i was just a little Scottie i used to try to kick a football above this line against my dad's work shop. i would've loved to have had goal posts back then. it was just me and my Jan Stenerud kicking tee.
it took me 4 hours but i finally finished the show Eddie. good work again by you and Sensi.
Scottie, that is awesome. i will be sending you an email shortly.
Congratulations to Tommy Trott! I hope he is just one of many Tigers who will have a great season.
paulmain - you have THE best avatar, hands down. or hands off!
especially when one clicks on "view full size"
Thanks Scottie.
I'm just looking for non-AU UA gear to run and workout in, so that won't be a problem.
The show runs live tonight from 8pm-9pm CST for all of those interested. I'll post a link later when I have it. Like I said yesterday, you can now find the show on Itunes.
it is certainly destined to become the most popular.
Welcome Paulmain, you have made it from Bunker fame to Habotn Fame with your avatar.
Two of the saddest things about society today are people's inability to know how to pay the price for victory and how to learn the valuable lessons that come from defeat.
No Jet, we are supposed to be a society where there ARE no losers and every one is equal and life is entirely fair for everybody. Didn't you know that?
That was actually more difficult to write than I thought
Subject change ...
Old coaches on FB are posting article pushing for Legends Poll to be part of the BCS formula instead of the coaches poll.
They're using the coaches aren't even voting line of thinking.
What say you, HOT ONES?
Jet - i say can you explain your 3rd paragraph?
we're not all winners? i got a trophy for showing up today.
Jet you think those are two of the saddest things???? You must live a sheltered life.
Welcome to the HABOTN Paulmain. The last thing I heard about Gabe was that he missed spring practice because of medical "issues". I also read that Lutzenkirchen was told he had a good chance of playing right away because "something happened with Gabe McKenzie"
Jet, is it happy hour where u are?
oh, I got it. The votes in the active coaches poll aren't usually cast by the coaches.
it makes sense to me for the coaches not to have a poll, obvious conflict of interest, but it also makes sense to not have a random group of non football people making the poll because they are suspect to going with who is popular and not who truely (might be) is the best, second best, ect.
but some of the coaches don't even fill the polls out, right? doesn't joe pa let his daughter fill his out?
Jet- I'm for stripping the Coaches votes from the BCS formula. Way too many biases in that poll. The Legends that vote on the Legends Poll needs to be expanded, but I love thier format and how they discuss things before they submit their vote. I believe it is much more fairer than Coaches voting in it who have agendas come the end of the season when they actually do take an interest in voting.
It would be nice to have two good TE's in Gabe and Trott, and to be able to redshirt Lutz.
Monica, I do think they are two of the saddest things. There are other sad things, but I would put these two in that group.
ScottieB ... it's unhappy hour here.
THT ... quotation marks would have been helpful to describe the line of argument -- "coaches aren't even voting."
i think they should create a poll with voters composed of those who subscribe to ESPN GamePlan. That way, you know you've got someone seriously interested in college football voting (plus it's the only way I know of becoming a voter).
We'll never get an unbiased system. The computer is biased to whatever parameters are given to it. Humans are biased.
Collectively, the old coaches are probably as good as it gets in my mind to selecting the teams.
The best event subjectively chosen is the NCAA basketball tournament. We ought to head that way where the computers offer analysis, but the committee makes choices and its members are held up to public scrutiny for it.
The only semi-fix to the BCS is to go to the plus-one game.
I'm acting like a 15 yr old. Even though I'm allergic to cats, I keep scrolling back up to paulmain's posts.
You're saying we'll never see a playoff system, Jet?
paulmain's avatar is now my desktop background. I have a 24" screen. Life is fun.
Eddie ...
Your phraseology is right ... a semi-fix. Because some years a plus-one is unnecessary. It wouldn't be fair, though, pick and choose which years to have a plus-one.
Just getting rid of pre-season polls would be a good start.
THT believe it or not i don't like cats either
I think I am the best way of determining who the best teams are, so they should just ask me. I'm the one sitting down on my couch all Saturday watching all of the games, after all. Coaches and writers don't do that.
agreed Mon, preseason polls are crap.
I'm for booting Coach's poll in favor of the Legend's poll. I've know for many years that the majority of D-I coaches don't fill out their own ballot. The Legend coach's have much more time on their hands to see multiple games and tapes of games.
Excellent idea IMHO.
LT
Michael wins. All in favor?
The more you agree with me the more I like you, Nugget.
TommyD ...
I'm not saying that ... but it is still a ways away. A playoff system is flawed, too, because the teams will be chosen subjectively on different criteria (with or without conference title games).
I am for a plus 1 with the conference affiliation system put back in place for the BCS bowls.
I am against anything more than a 4 team playoff if it ever comes to playoffs. I love bowl season. I love the college football regular season. I love arguing on blogs. Don't take all of this away from me.
What cat? :)
Plus 1 is the best idea I've seen floated.
Michael ...
I'm almost back to where you are ... or even further. Forget Plus-One.
Let's go old school ... let the polls decide it ... keep the bowl games relevant.
It's a lot more fun to argue.
But if we're going to have this system -- get rid of the coaches, and limited the computers to something like an RPI, which is a resource and nothing else.
im here to oblidge Mon.
why not have a playoff with all the conference champions
*Oblige
Plus-1 will happen, and it will probably end up happening before the current BCS agreement runs out in 2015. I'm hearing possibly 2011 when ESPN takes over the BCS.
As far as preseason, does Auburn even care about winning the preseason games? Oh, wait a minute, different coach now.
PaulMilk, I mean, PaulMain ...
Which ones? Four? Eight? 16 with an at-large or two? What about the conference championship games?
The further you go down that trail, the more futility I find.
You HABOTN veterans know what's coming next don't you????
AUNugget, You're my favorite.
Don't tell the others.
Have a playoff that included ever D-1 conference champion. that way every school has a shot.
There's talk on the street; it sounds so familiar. Great expectations, everybody's watching you. People you meet, they all seem to know you . Even your old friends treat you like you're something new.
Johnny come lately, the new kid in town. Everybody loves you, so don't let them down.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Don't hate, Jet!!!
i think every conference should have a championship game. if you don't you are not eligible for the NC.
You're walking away and they're talking behind you. They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along.
Where you been lately? There's a new kid in town. Everybody loves him, don't they? Now he's holding her, and you're still around.
don't hate? you do know this is the 'Hatinest AU blog on the net, right?
Preseason polls are total crap. And everything Monica says is awesome.
..oh yeah, i'm feeling the favoritism
oh my my
Agreed Nugget
LT
Nugget, that's all well and good, but I don't think there's going to be a playoff system that excludes the Big Ten and Pac-10.
Or maybe they'll just go to the Rose Bowl and tell the rest of us to take a flying leap.
Well...we know a +8 won't work. Jon and Kate proved that.
I feel dirty for even making that comment.
be a lover not a hater
You and I must make a pact,
We must bring vituperation back.
Where there is hate,
I'll be there.
yeah, but whats stopping them from having a con championship game?
lack of teams?
have the big 10 (11) pick up notre dame and the pac 10 can pick up any two...doesn't matter really, usc pretty much owns the conference.
or just have the top two teams play each other at the end, keeping everything the way it is.
what's good for ALL other NCAA sports is good enough for I-A football. Playoff/tournament/championship series, whatever you want to call it. Just make it real, not mythical.
a playoff based on conf. champions sounds good, but what would criteria be for independents (by that, I mean independent ND)?
j-z, the level of corniness of that joke combined with the gossip mag topicality of it almost blew up my computer. Keep it up!
As promised, below is a link to the show tonight that will be airing live from 8pm-9pm CST. Feel free to call-in and be part of the show @ 347-826-9452:

vituperation! that's great. Now I know the lyrics I'll always sing when that song comes up on my ipod.
vituperation - it's so hawt when you use fancy shmancy words
THT - You're in my FHOF.
(Favorite's Hall of Fame)
Don't tell the others.
So you guys want a 16-team playoff? That's the "fairest" way to do it.
Logistically, it's a nightmare.
nice word vituperation (berate) or put another way hater
Monica,
Fool me once ...
i have no idea what you're tawlkin' bout, Jeyut...
no no...i don't want a playoff...at least not that big.
im kind of for plus one, when needed, but like someone said earlier, thats not really fair year to year.
i do like the way the season works now, its exciting and every game matters unless you are lsu and you lose two games and still make the big game.
Sixteen teams and they play the entire tournament in 4 days. I think that would settle any doubts about who was the toughest team. If you really wanna man up, make it double elimination.
I have ridiculous stories from Vegas, not habotn appropriate though :(
16 teams is too many. You don't need that many. 8 Teams is too many IMO. A 4-team playoff is the most logical thing, but it will not stop the bickering from the Non-BCS conferences, thus making no one happy. The bowl system as it stands now is a joke. The BCS was supposed to keep the bowl system relevant and I argue that it has made a joke of it, especially with some terrible matchups over the last few years. Either have a 4 team playoff or get rid of the BCS completely. That is my stance.
Jhag, if you're dying to tell somebody you know how to find me. i'd love to hear.
hehe....
Jet - why would it be a nightmare? I-AA doesn't seem to lose sleep over a 16 team playoff.
from vegas to greyhound is a big drop, playa
I say do away with the bowls force the independents into a conference and have a conference champion payoff
Also, if you want to listen to a delusional bama fan and a rational Auburn fan, checkout the Grid Iron Breakdown which will be airing tongiht also from 6pm-7pm CST at the link below. The bama fan said yesterday that bama is one of the top 3 programs right now. Let that sink in.
Gird Iron Breakdown Show Link
Yeah...I'm kinda interested in finding out how you wound up on a Greyhound too.
jhag = inspiration for "Hangover" movie?
so...Florida, USC, then Bama? ha. that's funny. i'm sure Oklahoma, Texas, & Ohio State don't mind at all.
Boise St and Utah to Pac 10, ND to Big 10ish. Strength of schedule sets pecking order of conference champions and all conferences have a chamionship game. Use bowl games somewhat for "playoffs" and a final championship game. There's 34 of them so there's plenty of room for the other teams to play in a bowl.
I'd say LSU is above bama too
THT ...
1. TV ... all the games can't be essentially at the same time like the I-AA games. Why have a playoff if all the games won't be on TV?
Then, you've got the NFL to worry about in that equation.
2. The fans who want to go to games ... exponentially more than I-AA.
3. That kills the bowl system, which involves 56 teams. Twenty-four teams just got left at home. That's not a bad thing, but it's a factor.
With that idea it might even make the bowls select teams with winning records to play.
Eddie, have you come up with a name for the kickball team yet? You want serious, funny, seriously funny, or AU themed?
Also, where and when are the kickball games held? What would I have to do if I decided I wanted to play? Are there truouts?
Scottie- He had Florida, Texas & Alabama. Got to love the idiotcy of that statement.
ohio state is not....NOT a top team. i don't care how many undergrads they have.
Hahaha flew back to Orlando for AAU nationals got knocked out early of that so bought greyhound tickets to Tallahassee where my brother attends FSU and lives in the pike house :0
Bama over USC and OSU.
k
please let's not talk about *uckeyes here! I'm surrounded by them.
my bad Nugget. i was thinking teams that have currently played in the NC game and thought them and not LSU. shame on me.
D.Miller- That was jaywall looking for the Kickball team name. Though I would be very interested in playing. It sounds like fun.
My team name would be Kick'em were it counts.
I concur with Nugget, who is Monica's favorite. tOSU is nothing more than a pretender; a middle of the pack team if in SEC.
Hag I don't want to hear the Vegas stories. I just want to see the pics.
its all good scottie, i just have a bunch of osu fans at work that think their team know how to play football....they don't.
Rick Reilly wrote a recent column on naming intramural teams ... maybe you can still an idea.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/package?id=3835199
*knows
Where are you Nugget?
My bad Eddie, things are running together today.
girls intramural football team I remember from college days:
The Mammillary Bodies
(yes, spelling is correct. tiny little things somewhere deep in the brain)
Lay off The Ohio State University.
They play really good football.*

Phil over Red? Pat Summit THAT far over Geno? just wondering
ohio state fans that say "the ohio state" = bama fans that say "the university.
both demand repeated kicks to the reproductive organs.
at least the ohio state folks probably attended their school.
Don Shula is over-rated. Pat Summit is under-rated. At least on that list IMO.
Tony Franklin is not on the list
OU chokes in BCS games fo shizzle.
"Trott, a senior, has 34 career receptions for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns."
Those are stats for a decent season for a TE, not a 3 year career.
RK- And yet, he is on the watch list. Better question is, who is not on the list?
Hmmm, my apartment complex might not allow a goal post in the backyard. What if I got a pickup truck and had it mounted in the bed. Wait a minute. That won't work. That would make me a bambi.
No kids from Alabama,Ole Miss MSU, UGA or vandy are on the list
nor vandy
how does one get on the watch list
I would guess that returning starters from BCS conferences, and any returning starters from all-conference teams outside of the BCS are on the list, since the guy collecting the list is problem an Allstate agent or bank manager in his real job. He spent $8 on a Phil Steele magazine and wrote down names.
Steve, how much fun would it be to try to kick a football through a moving goal post? hilarious.
John Mackey Award Selection Process and Award Criteria
there's a list of criteria in a pdf file at the bottom of the page
Paulmain- Apparently....sorry, looking at your avatar again...all you need is 330 yards and a couple of touchdowns thru 3 years of playing.
Evidently "style" is included in the selection.
From the criteria file:
For John Mackey Award (JMA) and Watch List consideration a player should be a “true tight end” in the style of John Mackey, play on the interior line with blocking responsibilities and possess the potential to play tight end on the professional level.
ohio state fans that say "the ohio state" = bama fans that say "the university.
totally agree
paulmain - believe me, your avatar is on the watch list
Lombardi deservedly ranked high. Wooden? Do y'all know how many mediocre years he had before he finally figured out how to coach? He's definitely top 10, but I would not have placed him first.
I think parseghian, wilkinson, and osborne are underrated on that list
There are 11 guys on the selection committee including Kellen winslow, Spencer Tillman, Sean McDonough and Lee Corso.
Oddly enough Phil Steele is also on the committee
out of respect for the Babealicious Hotties, I will try to refrain from making further references to my desktop...er, I mean paulmain's avatar.
no SEC TE has ever won the Mackey award.
TWO TE's from UCLA on the watch list. I wonder which one will "off" the other first.
1. Coach K underrated, Dean Smith overrated. And I like Dean Smith.
2. Pat Summitt underrated.
3. Bill Walsh underrated.
what are the chances of us useing two tight end's at the same time this year.
Why'zsh Lou Holtzsh not on the lisht?
I want to be a kitten
I doubt we will see much 2 TE sets this year, could be wrong, but I doubt it.
If Trott could ever learn to look the ball all the way into his hands, he could be a very productive TE, but until then not a chance.
Have we ever had a TE get over 500 yards receiving?
i just hope we use the Speedwagon (Mario) with the ball in his hands and not so much as a blocker, even though he will steam roll people.
i love watching that kid play.
except for tha sofla game.
I'm not a big Mario fan.
I think he can be a good playmaker, but other than the UGA game last year I haven't seen much.
I stand by my if Tate gets his carries and stays healthy, he'll get 1400 yards rushing prediction.
I believe Tate and Fanin should perfect complements to one another.
well, i hope Tate has a better go this year. This staff says there are gonna let him run north and south. i think he is much more productive that way, not having to run to the side first.
Mario Speedwagon!
Jet - Blasphemy! Don't you dare speak disparagingly of Dean Smith. He was simply the best ACC coach ever (and vs Kruschev he was 24-14)
WERK - I assume you mean in a career? I doubt it. I remember TE Reese McCall, who had a pretty good pro career with the Colts, was drafted in 1st round despite only FOUR career receptions at Auburn.
I wouldn't mind seeing Gabe, Trott, Tate, Fanin, and Smith in the game at the same time.
can anybody verify that stat on "Too Tall"? I'm just regurgitating what a HUGE Colt fan (the one whose knee was dislocated) told me when he heard the Colts had drafted an Auburn player.
i think you can run that old half back pass Caddy, Ronnie, and Campbell use to run, with Kodi, Tyrik, and Mario. or line those three up in the shotgun standing next to each other and direct snap to anyone of the three....hows that for a wildcat...er...paulmain avitar...er....eagle.
Hey everybody!!
I just wanted to say since I am happy right now, and can't talk to my wife because she is deliberating in a jury room as "Madam Forman"
I just closed a $145k deal today. That is all.
Time for a cocktail!
Very nice, AU1. CONGRATS!
500 yards for a career, I'd say we have a few TE's...however for a single year, I don't know.
Maybe Walter Reeves?
wow AU1 That is outstanding!!!
Don't let Obama know.
AUSOME AU1IN04!!!
Andy Fuller? (If he did, it would be 1994 and mostly from the Florida game.)
I think they call it "Group Hug the Practitioner of an Alternative Lifestyle"
That was funny
