Trott makes a watch list

Hey everyone. Thomas "Tommy" Trott, formerly of Trinity Presbyterian fame, has been added to the John Mackey Award watch list.

The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate tight end.

Trott, a senior, has 34 career receptions for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He has played in 39 career games and started 22 of them.

Thirty players were named to the watch list.

Why has Dodgeball been removed from elementary school and is not an option for competitive league play?? It should be a chapter or segment in the next "decline of Western Civ." book/expose.

Dodgeball promotes physical fitness and a healthy spirit of competition among yutes.

I'm fine with eliminating antiquated euphenisms for elementary school kids (e.g., "Smear the Queer"), but there's no reason why elementary schools across the country shouldn't be preparing these kids for serious DB competitions using wrenches and other motivational techniques recognized by Patches O'Houlinhan.

Michael: Read and weep:

The Painful Playground
Williams, Marjorie. (Wednesday, May 8, 2001).

Now it can be told. Two years after the killings at Columbine High School, two months after the murders at Santana High School, concerned school administrators and cutting-edge gym teachers are at last cracking down on one of the menaces that prey on the psyches of America's young.

The culprit in question is dodge ball -- also known, depending on where you went to school, by such aliases as killerball, prison ball and bombardment. In school districts across the nation, including Fairfax County, authorities have banned the playing of these games in physical education classes, on the ground that they foster aggression and discriminate against less athletic children. In a recent symposium in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Dennis Docheff, of Wisconsin's Concordia University, said, "In today's world, with so many things breeding violent behavior in children, there is no room for dodgeball anymore." A game that uses "students as human targets," says Mary Marks, health and PE coordinator for Fairfax County public schools, "sets up the potential for teasing and ridicule."

The alarm over dodge ball stands at the delta of two rivers of social concern: One is a push within the physical education profession to make PE more inclusive. Given the constricting hours devoted to gym classes across the country, many teachers have a sensible resistance to games that eliminate players, relegating them to the role of spectators for the bulk of the class. This movement deserves applause for its efforts to make gym class more appealing to kids who aren't naturally inclined toward sports.

But the other critique of dodge ball and similar games flows from the perceived crisis of bullying in the schools, highlighted by the murderous reactions of the Dylan Klebolds and Eric Harrises and Andy Williamses who have responded by killing their classmates. This social boomlet subscribes to a Slippery Slope view of the world, in which all manifestations of childhood aggression are seen as potential seedlings of pathology.....

all i have heard is mckenzie is expected to be ready to go at tight end when practice starts. since he was not around in the spring, who knows.

i've always been impressed with him more than trott too. i would venture to say lutz will be the 2nd best TE on the team this year depending on which of those two is better. i don't think CTT&co were able to get the ball in mckenzie's hands like they envisioned when he was recruited and he sacrificed his jr year to DE mostly.

1:19 PM
Blogger AUNugget said...

it makes sense to me for the coaches not to have a poll, obvious conflict of interest, but it also makes sense to not have a random group of non football people making the poll because they are suspect to going with who is popular and not who truely (might be) is the best, second best, ect.

but some of the coaches don't even fill the polls out, right? doesn't joe pa let his daughter fill his out?

1:21 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Jet- I'm for stripping the Coaches votes from the BCS formula. Way too many biases in that poll. The Legends that vote on the Legends Poll needs to be expanded, but I love thier format and how they discuss things before they submit their vote. I believe it is much more fairer than Coaches voting in it who have agendas come the end of the season when they actually do take an interest in voting.

1:24 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

i think they should create a poll with voters composed of those who subscribe to ESPN GamePlan. That way, you know you've got someone seriously interested in college football voting (plus it's the only way I know of becoming a voter).

1:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

We'll never get an unbiased system. The computer is biased to whatever parameters are given to it. Humans are biased.

Collectively, the old coaches are probably as good as it gets in my mind to selecting the teams.

The best event subjectively chosen is the NCAA basketball tournament. We ought to head that way where the computers offer analysis, but the committee makes choices and its members are held up to public scrutiny for it.

I'm for booting Coach's poll in favor of the Legend's poll. I've know for many years that the majority of D-I coaches don't fill out their own ballot. The Legend coach's have much more time on their hands to see multiple games and tapes of games.

Excellent idea IMHO.

1:33 PM

I am for a plus 1 with the conference affiliation system put back in place for the BCS bowls.

16 teams is too many. You don't need that many. 8 Teams is too many IMO. A 4-team playoff is the most logical thing, but it will not stop the bickering from the Non-BCS conferences, thus making no one happy. The bowl system as it stands now is a joke. The BCS was supposed to keep the bowl system relevant and I argue that it has made a joke of it, especially with some terrible matchups over the last few years. Either have a 4 team playoff or get rid of the BCS completely. That is my stance.

Boise St and Utah to Pac 10, ND to Big 10ish. Strength of schedule sets pecking order of conference champions and all conferences have a chamionship game. Use bowl games somewhat for "playoffs" and a final championship game. There's 34 of them so there's plenty of room for the other teams to play in a bowl.

THT ...

1. TV ... all the games can't be essentially at the same time like the I-AA games. Why have a playoff if all the games won't be on TV?
Then, you've got the NFL to worry about in that equation.

2. The fans who want to go to games ... exponentially more than I-AA.

3. That kills the bowl system, which involves 56 teams. Twenty-four teams just got left at home. That's not a bad thing, but it's a factor.

2:00 PM

D.Miller- That was jaywall looking for the Kickball team name. Though I would be very interested in playing. It sounds like fun.

My team name would be Kick'em were it counts.

"Trott, a senior, has 34 career receptions for 330 yards and a pair of touchdowns."

Those are stats for a decent season for a TE, not a 3 year career.

RK- And yet, he is on the watch list. Better question is, who is not on the list?

Hmmm, my apartment complex might not allow a goal post in the backyard. What if I got a pickup truck and had it mounted in the bed. Wait a minute. That won't work. That would make me a bambi.

2:27 PM

I would guess that returning starters from BCS conferences, and any returning starters from all-conference teams outside of the BCS are on the list, since the guy collecting the list is problem an Allstate agent or bank manager in his real job. He spent $8 on a Phil Steele magazine and wrote down names.

John Mackey Award Selection Process and Award Criteria

there's a list of criteria in a pdf file at the bottom of the page

2:31 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Paulmain- Apparently....sorry, looking at your avatar again...all you need is 330 yards and a couple of touchdowns thru 3 years of playing.

2:31 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Evidently "style" is included in the selection.

From the criteria file:
For John Mackey Award (JMA) and Watch List consideration a player should be a “true tight end” in the style of John Mackey, play on the interior line with blocking responsibilities and possess the potential to play tight end on the professional level.

2:34 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Lombardi deservedly ranked high. Wooden? Do y'all know how many mediocre years he had before he finally figured out how to coach? He's definitely top 10, but I would not have placed him first.

I think parseghian, wilkinson, and osborne are underrated on that list

2:35 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

There are 11 guys on the selection committee including Kellen winslow, Spencer Tillman, Sean McDonough and Lee Corso.

2:35 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Oddly enough Phil Steele is also on the committee

I doubt we will see much 2 TE sets this year, could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If Trott could ever learn to look the ball all the way into his hands, he could be a very productive TE, but until then not a chance.

2:51 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Have we ever had a TE get over 500 yards receiving?

2:51 PM
Blogger AUNugget said...

i just hope we use the Speedwagon (Mario) with the ball in his hands and not so much as a blocker, even though he will steam roll people.

i love watching that kid play.

except for tha sofla game.

2:52 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm not a big Mario fan.

I think he can be a good playmaker, but other than the UGA game last year I haven't seen much.

I stand by my if Tate gets his carries and stays healthy, he'll get 1400 yards rushing prediction.

2:57 PM
Blogger paulmain said...

I believe Tate and Fanin should perfect complements to one another.

3:00 PM
Blogger AUNugget said...

well, i hope Tate has a better go this year. This staff says there are gonna let him run north and south. i think he is much more productive that way, not having to run to the side first.

WERK - I assume you mean in a career? I doubt it. I remember TE Reese McCall, who had a pretty good pro career with the Colts, was drafted in 1st round despite only FOUR career receptions at Auburn.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gabe, Trott, Tate, Fanin, and Smith in the game at the same time.

3:05 PM
