First Post: Thursday of Week Two

Hey everyone. Fun night last night. Thanks for sticking around and enjoying our time together. All in all, I'd say it was best-ever night HABOTN shenanigans.

Special collaborative thank-yous go to: MonD, Kristina, SteveFC, Big Snacks Frankenschmidt, j-z, FSJ, Norm and jhag for the totally random "are there any dippers in here?" question. Brought tears to my eyes. Good tears.

HABOTN hits are up. The Auburn stories are powerhouses at the Advertiser web site. I totally appreciate your steadfast support of this little enterprise. I'd give you a Yuengling Black & Tan if I had some and you were of age.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

I must agree with Michael. I had the opportunity to chat with the step mother of a Tn starter and other than our mutual dislike and disgust for all things UAT, we didn't have much to talk about.

I am looking forward to this week's game against MS. ST. This will be the first real test of the team.

Who are the weirdos that actually picked LA Tech to win last week? I know there were some in the news media that actually did that.

I apologise for my absence from the blog, I have intended to really pick up my comments and contributions as the season got nearer, but I am in the process of moving back to KY on an opportunity that came up very suddenly (within the last month) and that means I getting a house ready to sell, furniture ready to move, closing on a house in KY, getting kids started in a new school, tying up loose ends at work, and trying to go to as many AU games as possible this year in the mean time.

Anyway, I was pleased, to say the least, with how we looked on Saturday. I hope the adage about a team improving from the 1st game to the 2nd game is true. I wasn't at the game, but I must say that Chris Todd's arm looked great. I liked how he is able to throw various types of passes depending on the situation, feather, bullit, over the shoulder, etc.

I thought that the running duo was something. It enable the offense to stay out of predictable situations, and thus, Todd was able to pick apart the LA Tech secondary. I look for more of the same against MS. St.

Ms. St has the makings of either a blowout or a trap game. I don't think this team will look ahead or past anybody this year after the year they had last year.

Denny, if I'm not mistaken, good ole Pat Forde said that LaTech was the WAC team with the best chance for an upset, but I don't think he actually picked them to win.

Kristina- MSU has a florida like offense, more so running than passing with typical MSU type players and a defense that was bad last year with a lot less of it's starters back, especially in the defensive backfield. I think someone on here stated earlier that Auburn needs to win big so show that there is some distance between Auburn and MSU, I agree.

Kristina, my one take away from yesterday (apparently too early in the evening) was that Missippi Stite has an outstanding running backs coach, but we shouldn't look for them to catch any passes out of the backfield.

Eddie, I think you nailed it. From a distance, Auburn and MSU should have "similar" offenses, but we need to show early and often that there is a difference across the board (offense, defense, coaches wearing their hats backwards, etc.)

On another note I have actually discovered a (the only?) benefit of having a sick wife who had to go to the doctor: I'm at home with the baby (who is asleep), and therefore I can catch up on a bit of the HABOTN.

Michael was mugged while talking to us right before kickoff of the Vaughn game. It took about 20 minutes or so, it seemed like forever, before we heard back and my parents where at the house, and we were all freaking out becuase we had no idea what the heck was going on and no way to get in touch with him. That really changes the view of football when that happens at the beginning of a big game.

THT, the mugging happened in south London, about 15 miles outside of central London. I was living in not a very good part of town at the time and was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Once I got back in touch with the fam, I stayed up till 3 or 4 in the morning (London time) listening to Eddie give me the play by play of the game. As JV went to kick the field goal at the end of regulation, Eddie said (and I'm paraphrasing), "Maybe something good will happen for you now." I replied (as inspired from Ed Harris in Apollo 13), "Only if my luck changes." It didn't...

11:04 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

EBro - I'm glad to hear it wasn't in central London. Can't say as I've ever ventured very far south of the Thames. I will not be able to watch another AU vs LSwho game without thinking of your story. Being in BTR scares me a whole lot more than London.

11:09 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Look at all the international Hotties!!

11:12 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Yeah, BTR is crazy. When I was at the 2003 game, I went out to a bar with some freinds before the game and unwittingly wore an orange and blue collared shirt (no Auburn apparrel, just an orange and blue shirt). I got some suspicious looks through the night and one girl asked me straight up with a bit of a scowl on her face, "Why are you wearing that shirt?"

AS the night went on, me and my Auburn friends made sure to give off the appearance of LSU fans so as to better blend in. At midnight, the lights in the bar would turn off and and they would pass around free shots while the LSU fight song came blaring over a loudspeaker. By the end of the night, we were all yelling "Geaux Tigers!" Partly out of fear but partly because it was such an awesome atmosphere.

In 2001, I saw Hugh Nall form a one person barricade between the Auburn bus and LSU fans after the game. Things were getting heated and confrontational, but Nall had fire in his eyes that night and the LSU fans begin to back down finally. Of course, we were still treated to 2 year old LSU fan flipping us off as we left town. They're crazy down on the Bayou.

11:17 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FYI, the 2003 bar indident was the night before the game, not day of.

The 2001 LSU game was awful. You could tell they weren't used to winning anything important. They had no idea how to celebrate.

11:21 AM
Blogger michael said...

I went to a bar in Baton Rouge the night before the 2003 LSU game. I had my Auburn gear on, and people talked some trash here and there, but it was nothing worse than what drunk Auburn people would do. However, I was there with an LSU guy rather than a group of Auburn people, so I guess I was more palatable.

11:25 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

The team I was with in 1999 did nothing to help my brother out by smoking cigars on their field. They held a big grudge about that for some reason. By the way, I went out to a similar place in BR, but made sure to be neutral. BR is a fun town. I never started yelling Geaux Tigers tho.

11:25 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Michael- the 2002 LSU / Auburn game was in Auburn, I hope nobody talked trash to you then.

11:26 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

LSU people are some of the worst even when they go on the road. They take over the town, act like the own it, trash it and then leave. I always hated having them come to Auburn. Although while I was in school we sent them home with a couple of losses so I guess it was ok.

11:26 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Diet Coke is expensive in bars, so I never go in them.

11:26 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The 2002 Auburn/LSU game was nice.

The funny thing in that game was Tre Smith at the end of the game ran the ball all the way down to the 2 yard line...the only reason he didn't score was because he slowed down to watch himself on the scoreboard.

11:29 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Yeah, Michael, 2001 was definitely the more volatile experience by far. As Eddie said, 1999 did not help it all. There were signs all over town that Friday night telling Tubs to "smoke this."

But that 2003 experience in the bar was memorable. We had a great time. Do we have anywhere in Auburn that at midnight passes around free shots while the fight song plays? If not, we should. It was awesome. Just sitting there having a normal bar experience, and then, bam, lights out and "Buhhh-buh buh buhhh!" followed by hysterical excitement from LSU students/fans.

11:31 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

2003 vs LSU is remembered to me as one of those (hopefully always) rare games where the result was obvious even before the kick off.

Tre Smith's handling of punts didn't make it easier.

other michael - yeah, I remember them doing the fight song at the bar I was at.

I wasn't really drinking that night, so most of the night I was sitting there observing my friend who went to LSU getting obliterated. He was on the golf team, and we went to some apartment afterward with a bunch of guys from the LSU bball team and gals from the ladies team. My friend was grinding up on the bball girls, getting a little too handsy while dancing(which in this situation, meant REALLY handsy), and stood on a side table and broke a lamp. I just sat there as the non-participant out of town sober guy whose only friend in the room had become dysfunctionally drunk. He had golf practice the next morning that he was late for, and he got in big trouble.

Anyway, I still mess with him to this day about that night.

Blogger E-Bro said...

RK, 2003 was one of the few times I've misread the situation before a game that badly. 2001, I thought we he had a great chance against Florida before the game and I knew we'd beat UGA in Athens later that year. I knew we'd beat Bama in 2002 (same goes for Bama in 2003). 2003 LSU, we were fired up for that game. The guys were playing well at that point in the season and LSU hadn't yet become national title contenders. I thought we'd really make a game of it, but were just soundly beaten that night, much more soundly than USC had beaten us earlier in the season, though both shared the title that year.

I'm sure most everyone thought I was nuts in 1972 (nothing's changed), espcially my dad when I told him he didn't need to worry with AU behind 16-0 in the 4th qtr.

Made my picks for the week
last week I was 9-8 which was above average for me.
I never feel overly confident before a game but was pretty sure before the 2004, 2006 and 2007 IB games.

Victories I saw in the distance:

1994 Florida
1989 UAT

Never saw these coming:
1993 Florida
2007 Florida

Buttkickings I knew we would get:
Syracuse 2001
LSU 2001
LSU 2003

Unexpected Losses:
GT, 2003 and 2005
UGA 2006

12:21 PM
Blogger michael said...

It would be hard to make a concise list of "Unexpected Losses"

12:22 PM

those two Tch Games were unexpected by me also never thought we would lose either one.

1970 losses to LSU and UGA were huge shockers, though the former wouldn't have been had I had a chance to walk on the field before the game. It was foot deep muck from all the rain that day. Sully & Beasley never had a chance.

What does confidence mean exactly?

Michael, does it have anything to do with watching someone your grandparent's age talking about being confidently sexy?

A = @$$hats

C = cornhole

all topics of last night

It wasn't a whole ABC's of Habotn. It was just a joke about some stuff that was talked about last night that was really funny.

It should be on the last page of the previous post, Luv

When Yahoo does the College Bowl Pickum, the participants pick the bowl winners, THEN rate the games from 1-32 according to how confident of each pick. Each correctly picked game gets the points rated by each participant for that game. Most points wins.

This removes some advantage for the fans that know all of the teams well, whic must be why I've won a couple of times in this format. Having said that...this year will now be a bust.

Jet....2001 Syracuse game. The entire USA was rooting for Syracuse. That AU team was the most bewildered I've seen a team look in pregame.

Blogger ehyou said...

Mon...
Confidence picks are weighted based on your confidence in them. If, for example, there are 20 selections, you will assign (20) to the one you are most confident descending down to a (1) you are least confident in. For every one you get right, you get the points you placed on it.

It's difficult to explain in words, a chart would be much easier to see what I'm trying to say.

1:34 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Well, that took so long to type, Hoopie already explained it, and better anyway.

Blogger Monica said...

ehyou - Good! So you understand why I so had a visual of you as Marshall in the episode where he had the graphics department at his disposal and made graphs of EVERYTHING.

Good times.

I also love 2 1/2 men. Although, it's getting a little on the sad side as Charlie is aging and having a more difficult time pulling off the studly, party boy image.

1:45 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

I know, it's harder to watch nowadays for me because the boys voice is deeper than his dad's.

The CBS Monday nite sitcoms contain the majority of our network viewing. One of the shows has that guy that played "Putty" on Seinfield. The show isn't great, but Putty is. Wifey won't watch that show..says she married a Putty/Tool-man-Taylor combo and watches the tube to escape real life.

I love using regular graphite (or, the so called lead) pencils.

I like the fragrance of wood, mixed with graphite when you sharpen the pencil. I like the tactile feel of the pencil's sharpened point as it glides over a coarse paper, or how natural that octagonal piece of wood feels against the fingertips.

I can go on but this keyboard is not as fun as the pencil. Next time we'll discuss fountain pens.

2:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

I like writing with .7 mechanical pencils. It gives you some of the smoothness of the old school pencils. However, this makes a mess sometimes, so I usually stick to .5 at work. But I always use .7 on crossword puzzles.

I do not tolerate pencil sharpening, so old school pencils are out.

a.) Relive the Official Wifey Pick & Roll Trick® (made her commit to a date without actually asking), March 1992.

b.) Attend Live Aid in Wembley, July 13, 1985.

c.) Attend Metal Sunday at US Festival, San Bernardino, Calif., May 29, 1983.

There are others.

Back to Ricky's Rant...

I have a temper, but not like that guy. I remember during the 2006 AU-UGA game, I got so mad that I got up to leave and said, "I can't watch this sh** anymore!!" as I was trying to get my stadium seat unhooked from the bench. All I could do was bang it up and down as I was yelling the above-mentioned quote.

We still laugh about that.

Somewhere I have a copy of the David Lee Roth vocals for running with the devil. You wouldn't believe how funny it is without the music in the background. You will hear silence and then suddenly you will hear him go, ahhh ha, running with the devil. Hmmm, I guess you had to be there.
