Gene Chizik speaks, 9/22
Welcome to Gene Chizik's weekly chat with reporters and associated hangers-on.
- He has arrived.
- "There's a lot of improvement that needs to be made in a lot of areas -- just as we thought."
- "We're playing a football team that hasn't won a game ... but they're a good football team. We have to get refocused. We have to make Auburn better."
- "We're perfectionists. We want that perfect game ... knowing that perfect game is hard to come by."
- On this week in practice: ``We've got to tackle better. Whatever we do and howeever we approach the week defensively, tackling will be (the emphasis.) Tackling has been average. We've got to pay attention to that this week."
- On the possibility of a fall-off: ``We have 12 games to play. Every week, you've got to show up and be ready to play. I don't know if there's a druther in there -- we'd rather do this or rather do that. We have to take it one day at a time. I know that's cliche-ish ... but we're not good enough to do anything else."
- On second-half strengths: ``In the first half, we're feeling out the (defense). At halftime, we've made the necessary adjustments we need to make to get the job done. That's what their job is on game day."
- On how that affects players: ``Right now, our kids believe ... and not pay attention to the scoreboard. It's a 60-minute game. You have to keep choppin' wood. That's where we're at right now."
- On the need to play backups: "It's going to be a rough five-week stretch here and we know that. Everybody that can come in and give us a chance and give these guys who have played so many snaps ... that's huge. It's great for team morale. The more guys who play, it's better for your team."
- On Hot Carter: "We've tried to ramp up his conditioning. We hope to get a glimpse of him."
- On the possibility of Auburn overlooking Ball State: "I don't think that's an issue -- at all."
- On Anthony Gulley: When we gave him a little room, you could see a guy who is willing to take it up in there. That's a courageous spot. I really feel good about him being able to do that down the road."
- More on Gulley: "He's a tough kid. He's got a lot of courage. He really wants to be good."
- On redshirts: ``It's such a long season. One play can change the complexion of what our plans are. Tyrik hasn't played. Dontae hasn't played. We'd like to keep it that way. We'll just take that week by week."
- On which positions have surpassed his expectations: ``I don't know if I can fairly answer that. I've seen so much improvement. I see so many areas of opportunity. I don't think I can say that."
- That's a wrap.

You can't stop me cause I'm on a boat
One-upped again!
Ask him the current price for Auburn stock, Jay G. Ask him to compare it to last week's stock. Ask him how he thinks the stock will perform in the coming weeks.
In addition, ask him if he feels this stock is a solid 401k-type of growth?
Would he consider this a high risk or low risk stock? The season is young, I would prefer high risk stock. Should I buy it? Chiz is older, he may not want to buy it in that situation. If he refuses to buy stock in Auburn again, Jay G, ask him if it is because he is at that point in his career where he shouldn't be getting involved with high risk stocks.
Are we even classifying stock correctly? Shouldn't this be called an annuity? Or does he not expect constant, successful payouts?
OK guys you are forcing me to repeat a post from last thread
I am sorry I left last night to watch the Manncolts play the Brownfish. Missed a good discussion. The pointed head boss in Dilbert said it best
"When you find a big kettle of crazy , its best not to stir it".
waiting on Chiz. sounds like a country song.
maybe Chiz is into munis
Sean, that's a good question. Maybe Chiz can answer that also.
Not sure I like the "Brownfish" nickname, Digger. I love Ronnie Brown, but "Brownfish" sounds gross. How about the "Ronnie-fins" or the "RBfish"?
"We're playing a football team that hasn't won a game ... but they're a good football team."
That's front page material. HAHAHAHA
"We're playing a football team that hasn't won a game ... but they're a good football team."
If ever there was a "You lie!!!" moment of this press conference, it was right there. I wonder if anyone yelled that.
That's some serious Chizzle-sizzle!
Scott I like that better. I don't always come up with good stuff.
THT - great minds think alike! (morons think alike too...)
``We've got to tackle better. Whatever we do and howeever we approach the week defensively, tackling will be (the emphasis.) Tackling has been average. We've got to pay attention to that this week."
Scout team running backs just said, "Awwwww man!!!!"
"I don't know if there's a druther in there -- we'd rather do this or rather do that."
I may have to get out my coach-speak dictionary for that one.
"In the first half, we're feeling out the (defense). At halftime, we've made the necessary adjustments we need to make to get the job done."
Isn't there any way to feel out the defense before the game? That would be a positive thing.
Rutgers chops wood. They suck.
My grandmother says "druthers". Jay G, ask Chizik how his grandmother has influence him.
Never thought I'd be on a boat, it's a long blue watery road.
They don't suck because the chop wood though PF, they suck in spite of it. Everyone knows chopping wood and chasing chickens is the best way to prepare for an opponent.
``Right now, our kids believe"
Yeah, but kids will believe anything. My kids believe in Santa Clause. That is just ridiculous.
I'm familiar with "druthers". I'm just not sure why he used it right there. I think he just wanted to say it.
more more on Gulley - "He hasn't fumbled yet, so the job is his indefinitely. That's really all there is to it."
No mention of the Trooper Blooper?
On which positions have surpassed his expectations: ``I don't know if I can fairly answer that. I've seen so much improvement. I see so many areas of opportunity. I don't think I can say that."
Reminds me of that Office Space scene:
"Which is your favorite Michael Bolton song?"
"Uh.. all of them."
Typical chizik NO comment
I'm a big fan of druthers. It's one of the few polysyllabic words I know. Just two such words in this whole post.
I celebrate his entire catalog.
Michael - great minds + morons = Great Morons!
MiQuele with the running commentary!
This thread sucks. No contoversy.
Coach Chiz is the Maya Angelou of coach talk
Chiz doesn't sing.
I think Chizik likes to try out about one home-spun quote or phrase per session with the media. He used one on Tiger Talk a week or two ago about McCalebb. I don't remember what it was, but it sounded completely unnatural coming from him. Maybe Pat Dye is feeding them to him.
JayGT - we want names!!! Who are the "hangers on"?
Andy Bitter's latest entry / article made me go 'huh?'!
He said that the field turned into a slip-n-slide after the downpour.
- (it fell on the floor)
Wow, I really can't believe Chizik didn't come out and say we have learned everything we need to learn and are as good as we'll get. You have to be amazed how he is able to come out every week and say pretty much the same thing.
Jay G. must be talking to players Right?
Found it (thanks to JGT's extremely hot blog). It was last week: "He's a tough young'un."
Sounds like Hot Carter is day-to-day.
Anyone else get monumentally pumped everytime they see the Under Armour commercial with the Explosions in the Sky song playing?
boom
Day BY day.
So, what backup is everyone looking forward to seeing play the most?
Eddie. I'm looking forward to the one that can get down the field in faster than 10 seconds and cover a kickoff inside the 25.
I want to see more of Lutz...
Now this is a press conference.
I didn't know we had any back-ups. But I would like to see Benton and Blake catch a pass or 2
Was that a link, Steve?
Good answer Dadof3. One Coach needs to start earning their salary in that department.
I look at this game like the La Tech game, except with a little less worry about how our team is going to perform. Play well, win, no injuries.
The 5 weeks following are going to be interesting to say the least.
this is kind of off the subject, but i don't think im going to be able to make the game this weekend and have 2 tickets. They are in the nose bleeds, but pretty much centered. anyone in the Atlanta area want them let me know. mpgill@printpack.com
Bro, we're three games in with the new staff. It's best to wait 12 before we talk about someone earning their salary, or at least until we lose one.
That's the point Bro. Prefer not to lose a game due to Special Teams. I think Jay B. is a good coach, but right now we are breaking down on simple things, especially on the Kickoff coverage team.
I am watching the Vandy/MSU game. This game needs sound effects. It is a continuous blooper reel.
Brother smackdown on HABOTN!
Michael- While my Bro and I mostly agree on a lot of issues, we can be very pointed on other issues and it makes for good conversations which sometimes ends in a dead line.
No question things need to get better under JB. CGC and JB would both concede that. I just want to quell an early rebellion against it.
If we are truly playing a lot of young guys and walk-ons, it's bound to struggle a little bit. Many of the top programs now play their best players on ST, but I guess our depth issues account for the reasons behind inexperienced guys playing there right now. Hopefully they catch on quick.
Nothing but love for my bro, who btw, has done another fine game preview for his blog, www.auburnfootballinsider.com (don't know how to link things). Check it out.
Eddie...
You gonna let him quell your rebellion like that?
He's distancing himself from Eddie. Before you know it, his name will be just "Bro".
Yeah Steve, I don't think we'll get anything like that out of Coach Chiz
That's the plan.
Though really I just felt like Eddie's Brother was a mouthfull, hence the shortening.
ehyou- He has the power of the darkside. Hard to fight right now, must see master yoda.
Yeah Eddie and his Bro beat the hell out of each other when they get into the REAL stuff. I just know they do.
You two need to get a room.
Learning he is.
Eddie's Brother is a nice name for him since that is what most knew him as growing up!
Yep, Eddie leaves a large footprint wherever he goes, even after he has lost over 100 pounds.
I'm normally a defender of coachspeak, but calling Ball State a good team?....
CGC really does need to get a few new coachspeak phrases....if for no other reason than entertainment value....you know...give the bored fans something to do during the week. Maybe even unveil a few new ones each week during the season. There are plenty of phrases around that can be plagerized without losing honor.
Good thing it's not me out there, I would probably resurrect a few of the old Tubs favs just to irritate the AU fans.
Turning the page, anyone see what looked like Michael Dyer sitting in the stands at the game on ESPN. Not sure if it was him, but he was wearing his Angels cap and after WVU scored to go ahead 27-20, ESPN showed him and some other guys sitting in the stands and I took it as a positive sign that he looked devastated by the WVU touchdown. I know he's already a heavy lean, but maybe he's already on board as well.
Bro- That was indeed Michael Dyer. If you listen to what he told Rivals, you have to feel that he is onboard with Auburn. Seastrunk seems to be leaning else where these days, but still a long way till signing day.
Yeah, like I said, he didn't look like a recruit on that shot. He looked as devasted as any Auburn fan would be on an opponent's touchdown. I liked it.
Live blog from the Vice President's speech.
In the first minute, he referred to people who knew as "buddy" and "pal," causing 41 people in the audience to pull out flasks and gulp.
The same 41 were forced to cannonball at the end of the speech when the phrase "public option" was never uttered.
Even if you don't agree with him, he's a good speaker ... especially with the knowledge that he could go off script and say something totally ridiculous. Today, he didn'.
Yeah, I've always happened to like Biden. I know he puts his foot in his mouth a lot, like when he told a paraplegic to stand up and take a bow, but when in the Senate, he seemed like that rare congressman who has a conscience. Wasn't afraid to speak up about Bosnia and Rwanda while we stood by and did nothing.
You have to keep choppin' wood....my favorite sayin of the day!
give the bored fans something to do during the week.
Hoopie,
It's not his job to entertain us. It's not his job to entertain the media. He's hired to coach football and recruit football players. All the other stuff is sideshow. I know he has to make appearances and what not, but it's not his job to be interesting.
Steve: Nice link to the anti-Chiz presser. Leach's public persona is as comparable to Chiz as Finnebaum's is to Jim Lehrer.
Just wondering with all these marvelous skill players coming to Auburn for visits, any chance there are some O and D lineman and perhaps some LB's around the range that are being swayed by what's happening at Auburn. I mean its GREAT that Dyer and Seastrunk are interested, but we need some hosses here, too. And as I write this I realize it's been about 40 minutes since I started the note. Better late than never sometimes.
Though it pains me to say it, Sensi is right.
It's not Chizik's job to say interesting things. I don't expect it from him. He rarely disappoints me.
I wish he'd allow more players to talk. It's crazy how many players he'll scratch off the interview request list.
Though it pains me to say it, Sensi is right.
That is golden.
BEASLEY!!!
This has been a public service announcement. We now resume our regular programming.
Jay:
Any sense that Chizik may lighten up on the control freak approach after some time on the job and success with it? In other words, could the silent stranglehold be his way of dealing with the initial unfavs to his hire?
I'll wait for a response while you moprh into an errie compbination of Nostradamus and Dr. Phil.
THT: Why don't you take you take your passy and blanket and go back to your room for a good cry.
New thread UPZ.
I'll update that one throughout the afternoon.
"Nostradamus and Dr. Phil" That's great.
It doesn't pain me to say that JayGT is right about Sensi being right about it not being CGC's job to say interesting things to the media. However, there could certainly be secondary benefits of doing so.
Silence is truly golden in many cases. It is better to have people think you are a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Chizik is just trying to protect his players/coaches and himself from all of the sillyness that goes on in today's world. Any thing you say can and will be used against you, unlike in a court.
Agreed with Sensi. Coach does not need to be interesting.
Some of the in state media is very anti-Auburn, and it's better to keep things very formal with them. Don't expose the team.
I'm glad no one raised the PF issue to him... I'd rather not give that guy or his callers any chance of credence, or respect of a response.
