Gene Chizik speaks, 9/27

Hey everyone. Let's boogie.

Opening comment: It's great to be 4-0 at this point in the season. After looking at last night, obvious we were disappointed in a number of things. We've got to go back to work today and continue to improve in a lot of areas.

On coaching against Lane Kiffin (former Southern Cal assistant) in the 2006 Rose Bowl: ``It was a little bit different because we had a few weeks to prepare for it. When we played them years ago, they were one of the best offenses in the history of college football. It's tough. It's tough to prepare for. They did a nice job with it. It seems like it was centuries ago."

Photo credit: Todd Van Emst/Auburn University

On Auburn's win at Tennessee in 2004: ``That was a huge momentum carrier for us. That was really a big away game, momenutum-boost league game. That was a great game all the way around. Special teams. Offense. Defense. It was one of those nights when we were firing on all cylinders."

Is Tennessee's offense the same as Southern Cal?: ``They do some similar things. It's not 100 percent exactly that, but there is some carry-over."

Disappointed with the Ball State game? ``We had sloppy penalties. We had nine. We were sleepwalking at the beginning there somewhat. We score 28, 30 points and then we went back to sloppy football. I didn't like the flow of the game. Those games are tough because you can only win those games one way and have everyone happy. A lot of things could have been much cleaner, executed much cleaner."

On Gabe McKenzie: ``We're trying to see exactly where Gabe can help our football team the most. We'll take that step by step. I'm really proud of Gabe for being unselfish and doing the things we asked him to do."

On being displeased with the Ball State win: ``I'm never displeased with a win. Let me clarify that. I just wish we could have played with more focus. You can't be happy with a game where you have nine penalties - no matter what they were. 4th and 1 at Auburn? You've got to make a first down. That's just what you have to do. I'm very glad to be 4-0? Am I satisfied with the way we played last night? No, I'm not."

On Byron Isom:
``It's something we've got to plan for. We'll continuously work to plan on aration with some guys. Bart is certainly a guy who has been around a long time, has played a lot of football, and he's in the equation."

(Isom, a starter at guard, has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules)

On playing Jamar Travis last night: ``Things happen and we've got to make some tough decisions. Maybe that decision wasn't clear or to the point it is now a month ago. We've got to get through the year. Whoever we have to play to help us win, we're going to do that. Numbers-wise, we're not where we want to be."

On playing Andre Harris last night: ``Andre did play. That was as a backup. Same situation Jamar is in."

On making the decision to pull redshirts: ``It gets hard. There's nowhere else to go. They all know the lay of the land. This might not have been our intent in Game One, but that's where we're at."

On Auburn's defense lagging last night once the first-team guys were pulled: ``I don't care about all that. I've got to get my guys to the next game. When it's a four-touchdown lead, we're not worried about stats. We're worried about next week."

On the phrase Do What We Do: ``There's no real origin of it. Without getting philosophical, when you repeatedly do something, you become a product of … your habits. This is what we do on offense. This is what we do on defense. We're not trying to re-invent the wheel. We've got to do what we've planned to do. Nothing revolutionary. We need to do what we do and do it better when we're not playing well."

On the idea of having a theme each season: ``I like having a theme. I like having something to hang your hat on and go back and refer to."

On Hot Carter: ``He maybe played a little heavy-legged, but he needed to get in there. He needed to get those reps. Rusty, but played hard. He'll get better every game. It was a good test for him in the first game."

On running the Wildcat sans Burns: ``We have other people who definitely can do the wildcat. Kodi is our guy because he brings some potential that other guys don't have."

On the punt-return problems: ``Somebody's just got to step up to the plate. They've got to do it in a game. It's very, very disheartening that we've spent so much time and we can't find somebody to catch the ball."

I have never seen so many AU fans excuse poor defense. Then again, I have never seen a more productive AU offense.

TOTAL DEFENSE:
327.8 yds per game
41st NCAA
8th SEC

TOTAL OFFENSE:
526.3 yds per game
3rd NCAA
1st SEC

PF, you lie. I had been saying Todd would be the starter if he was healthy since last season.

As I said earlier, it's an average D that's on the field a lot more than we are used to seeing due to a rare quick strike offense.

We knew in August that our D was going to be thin and wasn't going to be our strong point. Everyone is acting like we were supposed to have the 2004 D out there.

Even the 2004 D would have given up more yardage and points if our offense was scoring within four plays.

It's not a good D, it's not a poor D either...it's average. We're just not used to average defense.

9:41 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We're also putting the D in bad spots when every time we score the opponents offense is starting at the 40 yard line due to horrible kickoff coverage.

9:43 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I just hope we aren't taking UT too lightly.

We haven't played away from home yet and haven't played against a D with that kind of speed yet.

RK, your assessment of the defense is very fair.

wow, UGA has double the penalties and penalty yardage that we have.

UF allows 6 yds less per KO return than we do.

Fun facts to know and tell.

Howdy Hotties. I've been lurking a while, reading. A lot of gnashing of teeth on special teams. Got me to thinking. How do we stack up so far at every position vs. how we thought we would look. Here's my humble opinion. Hope it's not too long.

qb- Todd much better than anticipated. A big plus.
RB- McCalleb a positive, gives us a home run threat we didn't have. Tate is what we thought he was. Smith turning out to be better than expected.
H-Back. Fannin having more impact than I thought
Wide reciever. So much better. Good routes, catch the ball.
O-line-Above average, about what was expected. not great.

D-line. Maybe not quite as strong as expected. Certainly not dominating.
D-end. Not great. Above average first team. Lack depth.
Linebacker- Average at best, even the first team.
Safty-Average. Bates good as a freshman. no depth.
CB-Average, not much quality depth.
Punter. above average. expected
FG kicker. Way above expectations so far.
Kickoff-weak just like last year. Coverage poor, poor technique.
Returns. Worst than expected by far.
Coaching. Better than expected on Offense. Handicapped on Defense due to talent and depth. Special teams handicapped due to depth and talent, poor coaching as well.

Here's an example:

I think those are the only schools averaging lower than our 2.9 yds/punt return.

So in summary, our offense has had great coaching and is much better than expected. Our Defense lacks dominating talent in most areas and is thin as hell. With that said, I just glad we are 4-0, and if we beat UT, I will be tickled to death.

Give Sponge a gold star.

My concern about the punt coverage team is that we use a lot of speed guys on the line. They are not getting free of the man over them to get down field. I rarley watch the NFL but today I looked at several punt coverages. You should see how they make sure only the 2 gunners get downfield and they are always nudging them toward the sidelines.

Did any of you know that Jax State lead FSU with less than a minute to play? FSU must be absolutely terrible, they only had 7 pts after 59 minutes against a team from the same division as New Hampshire? FSU wouldn't stand a chance of even scoring against a good team, like say BYU.

Or maybe such comparisons don't really work.

OK, I am about to shut down for the evening. Enjoyed discussing the AU team. I am VERY pleased with this team. One thing we all get, but those that do no tpull for AU don't, is that AU has come so far from 2008, most of the fans are very happy to see them all working together and look as if they have a plan in place as opposed to the disaster of 2008.

I'm pleased too, wtc. I think its going to take Auburn fans a while to realize that if you lead the nation in total offense, its very unlikely that you will also lead it in total defense. That's especially true when your offense scores on a lot of 2 or 3 play drives like last night.

We'll eventually adapt, and be just as happy to win 54-30 as we used to be to win 24-0.

10:07 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

thx coosa. With the injuries and the dismissals from the team, most of which came off the defense, how could we expect a good D? We are missing McNeil, Savage, Christian Thompson, Marcus Jemison, and the kid that tore his achilles.. All were expected to play 1st or 2nd team.

10:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sponge, I like your assessment of the offense, but disagree on the defense, particularly the secondary. Both of our corners will have a chance to play on Sundays, although I think Thorpe will end up having the best chance. Etheridge is a very solid safety and a hitter. I like him a lot, although I don't see NFL talent. Bates is young and also a hitter, but I like what I have seen from him so far. Because of his play, Etheridge has been able to cheat up more on the run.

10:08 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Coosa, or win 3-2 ? LOL

10:08 PM
Blogger coosa said...

jhag, you mean they scored 54 on BYU the week after that dismal performance against Jax St? How could such a thing be true? ;)

10:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

McNeil and Savage really hurt. I think Savage would have been just as good as McFadden once he got a few games under his belt.

10:09 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Steve, you may be right. One thing that we forget. The secondary gets a lot better when the line and linebackers are stellar. If they stop the run and put pressure on the QB, that makes the secondary very good. However, we still lack depth in a big way, so overall, they are not as good as in years past.

10:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have to agree with that. I can't remember us ever being so thin at linebacker.

10:12 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

What's up with the Slade kid at safety? I don't think he dressed out. I expected him to be better this year.

10:13 PM
Blogger coosa said...

I was happy with the 3-2 win; I'd always wanted to see AU win a 3-2 game and finally got to see it.

Once upon a time I was very happy with a 42-41 win, if any of you good folks remember back that far. Just so we win.

With the nation's leading offense, we don't have to be the best defense in the country to win a lot of games.

10:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

On the DL, I like both Goggans and Coleman and we have adequate depth, although I am not excited about any of the backups as complete players. Carter is good for pass rush and Ford may also be although terribly undersized.

As far as the tackles, the talent level is down, although I think we have a fairly solid lineup. There is no Marks of Simms on in this group of tackles. We lack a tackle that will constantly force a double team, which means more trouble for the linebackers.

10:17 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

42-41. Was that FSU. I was on the 50 yard line for that one. Most exciting game I've ever seen in person. FSU really does the pregame up good. If you've never been to Tallahasse for a big game, you are missing out.

10:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That FSU game has to be one of the best games I have seen. The LSU interception game is another. Punt Bama Punt will always be the best one for me. There have been several LSU and Florida games that were excellent. The LSU game has been our more entertaining series since we started playing them every season.

10:20 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Agree on the line. Our D-ends are fine, 1st team, but we don't have a game changer there. I think Coleman is over hyped. He's solid, but not dominating. We've always had at least one really really good D-end.

Did anyone see Nascar crash today. The 20 car had a pretty nasty crash.

10:20 PM
Blogger coosa said...

The FSU game in 84 was the game I meant. I don't remember another 42-41 game in AU history. Glad you got to see it in person; all I could do was listen on the radio.

I became frustrated with or DEs against WV. I felt they were taking a poor line of attack at the QB. They were running straight at him instead of arching out, which would heard him toward the middle.

I've got a possible origin for the "Do As We Do" phrase: Maybe someone is a Bill Murrey fan?

From the Movie "Stripes":

John Winger: "Cut it out! Cut it out! Cut it out! The hell's the matter with you? Stupid! We're all very different people. We're not Watusi. We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt. Who saw "Old Yeller?" Who cried when Old Yeller got shot at the end?"

[raises his hand]

John Winger: *sarcastically* "Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot? I'm sure."
[hands are reluctantly raised]
John Winger: "I cried my eyes out. So we're all dogfaces, we're all very, very different, but there is one thing that we all have in common: we were all stupid enough to enlist in the Army. We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're soldiers. But we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years! We're 10 and 1! Now we don't have to worry about whether or not we practiced. We don't have to worry about whether Captain Stillman wants to have us hung. All we have to do is to be the great American fighting soldier that is inside each one of us. Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud."

Perhaps this was the first halftime speech?
