Tennessee overview

Hey everyone. See if you find this useful in preparing for this weekend's game.

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (2-2)
  • GAMES:
    • W vs. Western Kentucky, 63-7
    • L vs. UCLA, 19-15
    • L at Florida, 23-13
    • W vs. Ohio, 34-23

  • PLAYERS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT:

      OFFENSE
      • QB Jonathan Crompton, No. 8: At least 1 INT in each game this season, 8 INT in all.

      • TB Montario Hardesty, No. 2: Rusher. Averages 5.8 yards per carry. 4 TDs.

      • UB Bryce Brown, No. 11: Mario Fannin-type player. Averages 5.0 yards per carry, team's second-leading receiver with 7 catches for 102 yards.

      • WR Quintin Hancock, No. 87: 11 catches for 128 yards, 1 TD. May or may not play against Auburn (broken jaw).

      DEFENSE
      • CB Eric Berry, No. 14: Bad man. One of the top 3 DBs in the nation.

      • LB Rico McCoy, No. 5: Hitter.

      • DE Chris Walker, No. 84: Has a tackle-for-loss in three of the Vols' four games this season, 5.5 overall.

  • UT PLAY DISTRIBUTION:
    • Total plays: 270
    • Runs: 159 (59%)
    • Passes: 111 (41%)

  • AU PLAY DISTRIBUTION:
    • Total plays: 299
    • Runs: 186 (62%)
    • Passes: 113 (38%)

  • OTHER UT TRENDS OF NOTE:
    • Opponents are outscoring Tennessee 29-14 in the 3rd quarter.

    • Tennessee is outscoring opponents 43-3 in the fourth quarter.

    • Tennessee defense is allowing 2.7 yards per rush this season.

    • Tennessee is a running team, but it struggled to run against both Florida (understandable) and UCLA (not as understandable.)

Against UF: 32 rushes for 117 yards. That's 3.7 yards per carry.

Against UCLA: 44 rushes for 115 yards. That's 2.6 yards per carry.

    • Based on the trends outlined above, it's reasonable to assume Auburn will sell out against the run and require Crompton to make exploitative throws in man coverage. He hasn't demonstrated the ability to do that consistently. He makes a lot of mistakes.

Sponge, I believe in establish rules and the consequences up front and I hope Chizik has done that. Sure, there are always special cases, but you go by your rules as guidelines for special circumstances regardless of the player. It tomorrow Todd violated the same rule, I would expect him to get the same punishment. If a coach violated the same rule, I would expect him to get as severe or possibly more severe punishment. I hate it that Isom isn't playing, but team discipline is important in a lot of different ways.

The famous people in this MyTouch 3G (Google Android phone) commercial really suck at being in commercials, but the Cat Stevens song, simple premise, and the phone being the center of attention make it a pretty decent commercial.

I suspect Gus and Co to game plan to our strengths. They seem to have done alright so far.

But reporters are the people's conduit. Would they rather have a thousand fans at practice?

Give the legit reporters the info and allow them to distribute it.

8:53 PM

IV. It's a good thing not to count your SEC championships before they are won. A quick check of the records shows that AU ain't won that many of em. Sad but true.

maybe Jay can find out what he did. There are rumors that are saying the same thing but no one will confirm them

8:54 PM
Blogger michael said...

Hey Jay G, why'd you rank everyone the way you did?

8:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't have any problem with Chizik limiting information that gets out. I do think he should make sure that the reporters get informed and information doesn't just leak out from anonymous sources.

Look for Au to make an offer soon to the Hardin kid form B'ham. 6'5" 305lbs. Grimes likes him ALOT.

Thanks wtc. I love you expertise in things you do not follow closely:)

8:57 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Don't disagree Steve, but there are lots of ways to punish. Gametime is just one. If your key players miss the game, it could affect the outcome, and the outcome affects all the other players. Not saying it shouldn't be done, but we have a lot of guys kicked off the team and missing playing time. Sure would like to know if the punishment fits the crime so to speak.

8:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I just have to trust Chizik knows best in terms of the punishment fitting the crime, but the effect on the team shouldn't weigh in to what the punishment should be. Heck, wasn't it FSU that barely had enough players to play their bowl game because of suspensions? Yea, I think those were NCAA, but I have no problem with that either. If you get into what affects the team then things get ugly.

9:00 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

So WTC. If the rumors were true, does it warrant a three game suspension IYO. Just curious.

9:00 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

I'm more accepting than most, but Cat Stevens is beyond acceptance IMO.

Coosa,

I had forgot that Blakney had punt return duties in '69. In fact I had forgot that he was even on that team. Sully and Beasley did so much that year that I forgot that we ever had a punt return or had to punt. Kickoffs yeah, but not punt returns so much.

Anyway AU needs all the practice we can get....especially ST!

9:03 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Sponge-Yes. If not more. Remember I said 3 minimum.
Chizik's message, as you all know, is no one is bigger than the team. It could put us in a bad spot, but I do not see him lifting the suspension at halftime is AU is behind.

9:03 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Well Steve, the next game of football I coach will be my first. I just think you could so some things that would be just as bad, if not worse, than long term suspension. 5 am wakeup stadiums, etc.

9:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, I am of the opinion that a lack of team discipline allowed Fulmer to get where he is today.

9:04 PM

WTC. If that's true, it just reinforces the idea that Tubby and company were not watching the farm the last few years.

I agree with that totally Steve. Apparently, AU has some of the same type athletes right now.

9:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The UT job was Fulmer's dream job. I think he would rather have it. I think his demise started with a star receiver that was always getting in trouble. I don't remember now, but I think his name was Washington. Is was round the turn of the century and the guy kept spouting off and kept playing.

9:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Tubs probably did himself a big favor with that 5 star linebacker that had doobie issues. The name was JaMarcus Rowell or something like that. Yea, he was suppose to be great, but he disappeared quickly. I think he was allowed one chance back that didn't last long.

My prediction is

Auburn 38
Tennessee 17

9:33 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

It's a tough game to pick.

I think we should win...however we really haven't played a D with the speed and ability that UT will have...and we haven't played on the road yet.

So I really don't know how to call this one.

9:34 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

So far we have scored in every single quarter this season, so unless we get a rash of field goals, we should have a good chance at making 30.

9:34 PM
Blogger IV said...

Steve,
You have to get in position to score first to even get field goals.

9:35 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I know UT is apparently down again this year, but it's still Knoxville and we're still not sure what kind of team we have yet.

9:36 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If we go to Knoxville this weekend, win and look good doing it, then I'll have a lot more confidence in this team the rest of the year.

UT's D is good. Last year it was in the top 5 in the nation on a team that couldn't score points. It's still good this year.

If this offense can put up good numbers this week, then I'll start drinking the cool aid.

9:39 PM
Blogger IV said...

Coosa,

The old man is getting sleepy so I think that I will head to bed soon. You guys have fun, figure out how we will give UT a beat down. I would love to see it. Have a good night all.

AU- 27
UT- 23

9:50 PM
Blogger wtc said...

wow Aufan. COncerned over 1st away game or just not sold on the defense stopping them?

9:52 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

So I was going to take a look at how UT ranked nationally on defense, and according to the NCAA stats on total D NC State is first and the top 10 includes Arizona St, UConn and Kansas State. I would say everyone needs to get into the meat of their season before an adequate ranking can be determined.

9:54 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

One very telling stat is turnovers gained and Auburn is tied for 5th with 12, UT is tied for 44th with 8

10:00 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

wtc,
1) 1st rd game
2) new starter on OL going against the best D AU has faced to this point
3) coverage on kickoffs and worries about TO's on punt returns
4) the AU D trying to stop UT from running the ball straight ahead

If AU can make UT drive 75-80 yd's to score, I feel very good about a win. So far, I see no sign that the special teams are getting any better. I'm afraid a short field for Tennessee to score on will make the game closer than it would otherwise be. Sorry to ramble.

10:01 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I think our D matches up well with the UT offense. There is nothing to show that their offense is something to be scared of/ If our offense can make their defense wear out, we'll be fine. I also have the special team concern with everyone else. With the exception of Wes who seems to have found his groove again.

10:04 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

And on not #4 I'm calling it a nite too. WDE everyone!!

10:05 PM
Blogger wtc said...

AUfan-No ramble there. Very good points. I agree with most of those. i just think AU will overcome those. The short field issue is my biggest concern. Maybe I am hoping Kiffin chnages his game plan. like WVU, and start to pass the ball alot and we take advantage.

10:06 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I'm out also. You guys solve all are problems and post a summary to load up about 5:30am and I can make it a productive day.

I think Auburn has a pretty liberal policy regarding media.

You'd not have to look very far to find programs with systems that really keep a lockdown on who speaks to media and who doesn't. They even kept NCAA investigations under wraps.

Obviously there will be things that they don't want printed in papers. That has never changed by much. I don't blame them.
Oh and I do understand JayG's frustration.

For the record, I'm no longer frustrated with Chizik's suprisingly restrictive media policies. I had to get over it. I did. We're doing the best we can with limited access these days.

As a matter of clarification, the days of Auburn having a "pretty liberal policy regarding media" (as identified by Aeronaut) are over.

Speaking "wrong orange"...

In 2004 after the game vs The Citadel (the week before our trip to Knoxville, I stop outside of Newnan, GA at a Wendy's to get something to eat on the way home.

Me and my brother are waiting in line and there is this super-sized lady sitting at a table talking to her family. She's a UT fan.

Large lady: "There's the Orange that sucks!"

Her poor child: "mom, they can hear you".

Large lady: "I don't give a #!@) if they can hear me, there's the orange that sucks!"

So we go through the line and I just tip my cap to her as I go sit down to eat.

I expect stupidity from some UT fans living in the state of Tennessee, but not in the middle of Georgia.
