Great video, Jay. If Adams gets much better he might be the best AU receiver in the last 4 years.

Thanks for the vid Jay. Love the attitude of the Auburn players. Trott seems like he just loves playing football at Auburn, same with Gulley. And I don't think you would see the number 1 receiver on a team that has been successful answer that question the way he did.

The defense wasn't tired in the first quarter. I think West Virginia's speed took them by surprise.

The defense did quite well after the first quarter (although still missing tackles).

Nice vid JG. Man Gulley is as country as biscuits and gravy but I think he will be a good one!

And what did I tell you about Dallas running the ball, they went back to the run game and just walked all over the G-men... but probably lost Barber for a little while in doing so.

I just watched the replay and the announcers did mention Roof's philosophy of the first tackler just running full speed without breaking down for the tackle. The flaws in that approach wwere exposed against WV. Jay can you probe that abit more when you talk to Roof?

Agree totally NoVa Tiger. We missed a lot of tackles in the first quarter. If we were tired then, Coach Yox needs to pick up the pace a bit.

Am still waterlogged from the game but it was worth it. Also, my phone was a victim of the monsoon, so am just now able to check in.

This may have been addressed in prior threads which I am too tired to read at this point, but does anyone know WV's yardage after the first Q as compared to the entire game? I was thinking that they had around 220 after 1Q, but less than 300 after that. Shows some good adjustments by our D.

way to bring the optimism Jhag.

hey, i saw a lady walking around with a t-shirt with your photo on it and i was like, "HEY JHAG", then i realized it was of Wade Christopher. it took me a minute, though.

I do think some of the dangers of Ted Roof's style of defense were apparent. That isn't to say that another philosophy is better. It just depends upon the situation.

I love that attitude I see in every player interviewed. You can tell they believe in what they are doing.

Thanks for another great video, Jay.

"I just watched the replay and the announcers did mention Roof's philosophy of the first tackler just running full speed without breaking down for the tackle. "

Big Cat,

Were these the ESPN announcers? If so, then just ignore them. They probably made that up as they went along.

6:29 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Well, we know the AU announcers wouldn't say that, they spend too much time whinning about calls all game long.

For all of you that are wanting some Auburn love in the polls, check out CFN's poll, we are #8:

Auburn #8

6:43 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie...the CFN writeups are definitely informed, but the rankings seem to put credence on statistics and ignore strength of schedule.

7:20 AM
Blogger coosa said...

Eddie - The CFN rankings make more sense than anything else I've seen, though I don't agree with it completely. Love seeing OK down at #20 where they belong. They lose at home to a BYU team that gets murdered at home by an FSU team that needed a miracle to beat Jax State.

AU at 8 is higher than I would rank them, BUT if we had played these exact 3 games at the start of the season last year we would be ranked in the top 5. The current system is a joke, and this will help decide who plays in the so-called BCS championship.

FWIW, I would rank Bammer as #1; I think they are playing better than anyone right now and would take FL easily.

7:23 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Hoopie- I agree. I could careless about the rankings, but i've seen several on here that are not happy about it, so I thought I would put that out there to show that someone is loving on the Tigers.

Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

mornin' hotties.

Gulley's cool. southern twang baby.

7:25 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

The truth is we don't know enough about any one team at this point. It really is a crapshot at this point to determine where the true rankings should be and will remain that way for a couple of more weeks when we finally start seeing some consistency among teams. Is bama #1, maybe, but that argument could be made for a handful of teams right now. It's way to early to tell at this point.

7:27 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Didn't notice the ESPN announcers comments regarding CTR's tackling philosophy, but the execution I saw seems to fit that description.

I disagree with CTR and agree with others above that our D could not have been tired going into the first qtr. We actually seemed to adjust and breakdown more as the game progressed. After we adjusted, the ball carriers stutter steps allowed other defenders to arrive and corral. Even after we changed, WVU still broke too many tackles.

Is it possible that WVU picked up this pattern from game film? Did our coaches specifically discuss changing with the players?

7:30 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie..I agree it is too early for polls. I started to put together my poll and quickly realized that there are way too many unknowns.

The pollsters initially vote based on the previous season's performance and the anticipated returning talent. I've noticed that coaching changes don't even seem to factor into pre-season polls.

Pollsters seem to incrementally move teams up or down rather than add or remove based on each weeks performance. While that approach is a sensible, it results in very arguable early season results. Thus the argument to not have early polls.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

By the way, am I only one that noticed Chris Todd limping around at the end of the game? Anyone know if he is ok?

7:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Chris low has us at 6th in the SEC right now. I think that is about right.

7:54 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw Todd limping at the end of the game, too. I haven't heard anything about an injury, only that he was exhausted because he had just gotten over the flu.

Darvin Adams is incredible. He just keeps getting better.

7:57 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

Todd took a hit on our 2nd to last drive and rigth after that you could see him on TV on the sidelines riding the bike.

The announcers didn't mention it, but there was a shot to the sidelines and he was on the bike.

Our next drive Burns came out in the Wildcat for the first two plays then Todd limped out.

8:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

FC, I have to wonder if TN might be better than us based on how they played FL. I would put us at 7th in the SEC for now, then 6th if we beat TN.

8:00 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- Thanks. Todd was out there the whole time on the last drive. He was split out at WR and that's when i started noticing his limp. What I didn't understand was that on 3rd down they had him move back to QB and run the option when he was limping like that. Made absolutely no sense. I hope he is ok, that is all.

8:08 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Gulf- I think UT's lack of offense is the biggest difference in the rankings for Au vs UT in Chris Low's poll. UT will not give up a ton of points, but they also won't score many either. Crompton is the worst QB in the league right now.

8:09 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I didn't see Todd out there at WR, but they didn't show it on TV until he took over at QB and ran the ball.

He took a hard hit on the 2nd to last drive and I think that's why he was limping.

I guess he got on the bike to try to work out the kinks.

8:11 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

UT is the first real D that we will face, plus it's our first road test.

This isn't going to be easy at all.

8:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eddie, that is why I think we beat UT. We aren't likely to score 40 something, but I can see 28. Can the UT offense beat that? Without a passing game, I don't think so.

8:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

MSU showed a very good defense in shutting down Vandy. We haven't played great teams, other than possibly West Virginia, but we have played some teams with good defenses. Even LaTech had a solid experienced defense.

8:14 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Florida couldn't score 28 on UT at home, but we can hang 28 on them in our first road game?

I'd love to see it.

8:18 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

if UT fans could, they'd throw Crompton over the side of Neyland Stadium. they're so over it.

that said, the UT peeps i've spoken to this morning find solace in their 'moral victory'.

8:27 AM
Blogger wes said...

i have a question. perhaps it has been discussed in a previous thread. is it just me or does Todd appear to throw off his back foot a lot? noticed it in both the WVU game and the MSU game. thoughts?

8:27 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

WERK, I could definitely see it. UT heard all week about how bad they were going to lose. They were ready to play this game. I could see us hanging 28 on them. We're not Florida but offensively I think we can do more THIS YEAR than Florida can.

8:28 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Wes, I've seen him do it a couple times. I think the majority of the time he throws off the back foot is when he's trying to throw a touch pass.

I think the two he's thrown in the redzone both went for TDs.

8:29 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I've seen Todd throw a couple of jump passes that looked terrible, but overall he's done great.

Burns on the two trick passes we've tried with him has looked really bad and never gotten his feet set to throw the ball.

8:39 AM
Blogger Robusto said...

Long time reader, not so often on the posting.

I really feel WVU fielded a SEC worthy defense, and some above average coaching. They had a good plan, and made adjustments on defense to counter the wildcat. They where determined to make Chris win the game for Auburn.

On that same note, I love how Gus made them pay with man coverage. I'm still very enamored by the adjustments this coaching staff is capable of making.

I must make amends some how though, when we where down 14-0, I started to feel hopeless, and experienced relapses of a '08 Auburn Tigers. Of which, these Tigers are not.

War Damned Eagle!

8:40 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The thing that bugs me about the KB errant throws are...there's no reason for him not to set his feet. On both of those passes he doesn't have an opposing player in the same frame.

8:41 AM
Blogger wes said...

wasn't necessarily a criticism of Todd's passing, just an observation. I think he has been very effective so far.

8:42 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Who would have thought after watching the debacle last year that we had people who could make ridiculous catches? Big props to the "hands" guys.

Also, I watched the replay and I haven't seen anyone mention this, but Ben Tate ran tough and got hard yards when we needed them.

I think it's the gloom of most of the southeast being rained on for two weeks that's keeping everyone quiet.

8:59 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

wes- I don't think Todd has a front foot.

Also, I was thinking it was heel or ankle problem of some sort; late in 4th qtr WV lineman dove on Todd's heel as he was throwing the ball away near the AU sideline.

9:00 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Saturday night wasn't 3-2 ugly, or even 14-12 ugly, but it was definitely not pretty.

9:01 AM
Blogger wtc said...

I agree that WVU decided to stop the run and make TOdd beat them. It was that way when AU had JCampbell at QB early on. Todd stepped up and made it happen. Of course he has some good recevieres out there also.
I am still amazed that for al the talk of Benton, Blake, et al, they have zero receptions so far. Almost feels like last year in a way becasue we only had one guy last year. However, I thinnk AU has more theyc ould go to this year, but just haven't yet.

I'm in development/construction. Georgia has very strict erosion control laws and it's flloding in No Ga. That is not be an allowable excuse to the Ga EPD and they will fine us aplenty if we aren't environmentally perfect....yeah...been real busy this am.

9:07 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

As always loved the video Jay, the players all show the team feeling in all that I have seen. If there is a "take a full speed shot first" it needs to be dumped over board and good tackling techniques put in place. The UN-special teams need a complete overhaul maybe from coach on down.

9:10 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK...so Ut fans are hatin' on Crompton. Let's see...he's the best they have or the coaches would play someone else....so why not quietly support the guy until something can get worked out.

Surely the fans don't think that the coaches haven't noticed the poor QB play. That is the only rational reason to complain loudly...any other complaining just affects team morale.

9:13 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

UT might be playing a true freshman at QB next year. That's always a risk, if I were a UT fan, I'd be worried.

9:19 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Hoopie,

...not that we as Auburn fans have ever complained about our starting QB.

9:19 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Hoopie-Isn't that what AU was going through last year? Fans thought KB was the answer until they saw it for their own eyes. Almost all the time, the coaches know what is best. It kills me that fans think they know who should be playing and the coaches have no clue.

9:19 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

UT has Nick Stephens as a back up and he played last year when Cromton struggled and didn't do so well.

BJ Coleman, who was a guy who did well in the spring didn't feel like he was getting a fair shot and transfered to UT Chattanooga.

I think Gerald Jones one of the WR's is their 3rd string...so maybe they should just run the option with him the rest of the year.

9:20 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

WTC and WERK...yup. Can I get credit for actually not taking a shot at the AU fans on this issue?...haha

9:32 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Congrats to Craig Stevens for earning defensive player of the week SEC honors.

9:37 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

wtc, that is very true, but it wasn't just the fans wanting Kodi to play. From what I read it appeared that it was some coaches and definitely some players. That was the mistake of the coaches and players. You have to let your OC make the choice and trust he knows what he is doing. Of course, that isn't easy when he questions his own mental abilities.

9:40 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

it doesn't look like Kiffin is going to make a QB swap any time soon. they play Ohio U. this weekend so Crompton has no choice but to look better. they took the ball out of his hands i the Swamp saturday and let the OL & Hardesty try to grind it out. it almost worked. if he had made a few plays it would've been a nail-biter.

9:43 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Scottie...the run and minize Qb errors strategy that UT used against UF could work well against AU. We'll need to stack the box, but what are we going to stack it with....safeties?..and do we even have enuff healthy safeties to do that?

9:55 AM
Blogger wtc said...

AU defense held WVU to about 300 yards after the 1st quarter. The WVU coaches seemed to get away from their game plan of running the ball after that. I thought if they kept that up, AU was not going to come back. UT has a good running game. I don' tthink they will shift from the run game against AU. AU db's a good and their passing game is horrible, which lends itself to a run heavy attack from them
