What the Tigers are sayin'

Hey everyone. Our second round of interviews has concluded. Let's see what they're saying.

RYAN PUGH
  • On Gus Malzahn's game-time demeanor: ``He's probably the most focused person on the field during the game. He sees a lot more than most people see from the sideline. It's his offense. He created it. He knows it like the back of his hand. When he needs to make an adjustment, that helps. He knows exactly what to do."

  • On those just-before-halftime scores and if that creates confidence: ``That trickles down from him to us. We take the initiative there before the half. We stuck it in for a touchdown in one game. We got a field goal, too. Three points. If you go back and look at it, that changed the mometum of both games and allowed us to pull away in the second half. We need to keep doing that. Our philosophy is to keep pressure on the defense. That's what we do.

GUS MALZAHN
  • On the team's confidence: ``When we got here this was a pretty fragile group. Anytime you have success you build confidence. It’s really good to see a lot of our leaders have confidence. That means a lot. The mental game of football is very important and I think they’re starting to believe in themselves and each other ... so that’s a very good feeling."

  • On Chris Todd's relatively mediocre game: ``They threw a lot at us early in the game. A lot of different looks. He's still learning his reads. He got a little greedy a couple of times, but all the things that happened are correctable. He made a couple of good plays, too, under pressure."

MIKE BERRY, aka BIG SNACKS
  • On the tailbacks being so complimentary: ``It means a lot. As you know, we don't get too much recognition. We're not scoring the touchdowns and stuff like that .. so to have your ball carriers actually acknowledge the offensive line, that's real big. It makes us happy."

  • On Jeff Grimes, his position coach: ``He's a real positive guy. I don't see him get down a lot and he always tells us to get our demeanor up and never let it change. Just because something bad happens in a game doesn't mean that's the end of it. Don't get down on yourself. Look forward to that next play."

Going from a fragile offense to a confident one is pretty darn huge.

The confidence of this team is why I thought the LaTech game was crucial. The players obviously had bought in to what the coaches were teaching. It was important that they got some confirmation that this offense could produce.

I am still cautiously optimistic about this team. Which is better than filled with dread like last year.

What was so troubling about last year is that I didn't feel good about the wins. The UT and MSU games felt like losses also.

It is all about seeing these kids being well prepared. They look well prepared this season.

Was Pugh as indignant over Ziemba's motion penalties as some of the Hotties were?

It's been very nice enjoying the games. The offense hasn't been nearly as excruciating to watch as the past couple years. The guys actually look like they are having fun on the field, maybe they just needed someone to believe in?

We haven't made it to either of the first two games, but I compared the LA Tech game (on TV) to the LA Monroe game (live) last year. It's been said on here before, but that win last year was painful. The offense was sluggish and clearly not confident in what they were doing.

It does seem like that's already resolved itself this year. Now we need to keep improving on the fundamentals and execution.

I agree with you ehyou. I worry about this for numerous reason. I believe Jock Sanders and Noel Devine will be the best offensive weapons we have seen thus far this year. I also worry about the scheme of their defense as they run a 3-3-5 and that changes the blocking scheme and gives them a nickle back on defense and our recievers haven't exactly been blowing away coverage in the first two games. I do like Malzahn's approach which gives me a little confidence and still think we have weapons like Benton that haven't seen the field so far.

Sometimes you just have to relax and go along for the ride. For the first time in my life at an Auburn game, I felt completely relaxed when our offense was on the field. We'll do fine Saturday night. Win or lose, those boys will play their asses off.

War Eagle.

Part of me likes the idea of a 3-3-5 against Thunder, Lightning, and Burns. I'd sure like to see those guys one on one against some DBs.

3 back to back games with 2 100 yard rushers?

Realistically, I do think this game is going to be a much more significant challenge, but I am (as usual) cautiously optimistic.

Am I worried? I worry about every game.

Do I expect to win? Without a doubt.

It's all about the hustle. AU will run the ball on wvu.

If they run a 3 man front, we could have 3 100 yard rushers this week.

i agree with big snacks. i am always looking forward to the next play this year. i definitely couldn't say that last year as i knew what the next play was going to be based on which of the three formations AU lined up in. there were clocks less predictable than those side to side run plays.

I think the 3 3 5 will work in Tate's favor, and against Mccalebb, I look for Tate to have between 150-200 yards, with McCalebb getting a measly 100. I Figure we will see at least two highlight reel worth plays of Tate DESTROYING a DB.

I love you man, but I think you're just looking for a reason for Auburn to lose. It will happen, but not this week.

It's his offense. He created it. He knows it like the back of his hand. - Ryan Pugh

Really? I thought Malzhan was a disciple of some tree somewhere.

Jay G., am I misremembering that?

Everyone has mentors and influences. I think Malzahn has made some personal offensive innovations though.

bill stewart ain't richrod and pat white is gone. so is the franklin spread and whatever the hell ensminger was trying to do. we got out 17 points on WVU at their place before nall probably reminded the offense how much they sucked. i feel like we have more than a good chance to win this game. i think AU tries man to man and dares their QB to beat us. if WVU has success anyway, the coaches will adjust the gameplan accordingly. something unheard of the last 10 years.

chip chip, you must have missed the last decade. There were adjustments. Stay focused on now and let the past go.
