GAME DAY: Kentucky at Auburn

Hey everyone. Welcome to Game Day No. 7. That means the Kentucky Wildcats will play at Jordan-Hare Stadium this evening. Toe meets leather at 6:30 p.m.

The game will be televised by ESPNU.

I'm planning to head out around 3:30 p.m. There could be tailgating. Or maybe not. It's going to be cold. Please bring warm materials.

Here is a picture that impressed me: Bo Jackson competing in the Home Run Derby last night. I'd like to have seen that.

If only they had the medical knowledge they have now when Bo hurt his hip, he probably could have had a much longer carrer in baseball, if not football.

So who did win the HR derby?

Texas's defense has been on the field too much. The dam is going to break on that defense before long.

I hope the dam does break - I have OU getting 3 on my parlay.... :-)

12:13 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

I am also giving up the 17 on the Tigers. I consciously try not to bet on AU - but a combination of a good week of practice and UK's QB out - I couldn't help myself.

12:15 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Those Corner's from Iowa may loose the whole deal for me though. Got them getting 2.5. The cheese boys are ahead 10-3 at the moment.

12:16 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Not to point fingers if we lose, but I'll blame LT if we do. I kid.

In the RRR, I'm pulling for Texas. Didn't make any prediction so it's not for that reason. I'm just pulling for Texas, but their offense needs to get going. They've run the ball pretty well, but like us last week, they seem determined not to run the ball early on.

Georgia looks like a second tier (or worse) Div. 1 team to me. Pretty pitiful from what I've seen out of them today. Vandy is Vandy.

For me personally AUFan - I like a good defensive battle where field position plays a big part.

I also like AU to light up the score board and put a 40 spot on the board and 500 yard total offense in the books too.

OU is imploding.

Don't sell Texas and OU short on defense. They both play pretty well on that side of the ball. As maligned as OU's defense was last year, Florida only got 24 against them last year in Miami. Florida scored at least 30 points against every SEC team they played last year, even in the loss to Ole Miss last year.

1:23 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

E-Bro,
I don't mean to make light of either teams defense, they both look very good. But do you think Texas could score even 10 points on Bama or UF?

1:27 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Playing like this? No, but I don't necessarily think Florida and Bama would score a whole lot more. Texas and OU are certainly better on defense than LSU who gave up only 13 to UF last week.

I agree that Bama and Florida look much better than Texas right now, but I do think Texas can play some D. It wouldn't be 28-3 or anything.

Well, whether we deserve it or not, we will almost certainly be ranked next week if we win tonight.

#20 OU just lost (for the 3rd time) to Texas, #21 USF lost Thursday, and #22 South Carolina and #25 Notre Dame are prohibitive underdogs. All will likely drop out if things go as expected.

WVU will probably get in as well with a win over Marshall (although they are trailing 7-zip at the moment).

Wow, that was a dumb call.

4:04 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I dunno, E-bro, back in the 90's UT was really strong and UGA has been back and been a good team for a while. USC is up and down. I think it's close to a push since 1992.

4:05 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

UF should be lucky they are only down 7.

4:06 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Well, at the half, Florida has 129 yards of offense. This time last week we had 108.

Big difference in score, of course. But where the heck was this Arky defense the first 4 weeks of the season? ?

4:06 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

UGA wasn't very good until 2000 or so, Ray Goff was bad.

SC was bad.

KY had a couple of years where they were ok under Mumme.

UT was a really good team in the 90's

Vandy was always Vandy.

4:06 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Time for Tebow screaming talk to fire up the gators. Will it work again?

4:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

My point is that Spurrier lost more games to the West from 90-01 then he lost to the East and Meyer has lost twice as much to the West as compared to the East. I know Florida has owned Kentucky, Vandy, and South Carolina, but they've also owned UGA and UT in that time. Not so much in the West.

4:09 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well they'd probably have a few less but they always had to beat the best from the west to get those titles so...

Yes I know, but would they have gotten to Atlanta as often as they did playing five a year against the West?

I'm not questioning whether Florida is the top tier SEC program over the last 20 years, but the lifting would be a lot heavier than it was on the Eastern side of the division.

4:15 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Since Spurrier came home in '90, Florida is 83-10 against the teams that make up the SEC East.

That includes a 53-1 mark against SC, UK and Vandy.

To put that in perspective, over that same period the Gators have lost 11 games combined to AU, Ole Miss and MSU.

4:16 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Florida and UT were the two best teams of the 90's.

The west didn't really have a dominant team, Even Miss State won a division title in the 90's.

It wasn't until the 00's that the West started consistently stepping up.

Just my opinion.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I found the video of Tebow saying that over and over to be really cheesy and not motivational.

4:20 PM

RK ...

Just walked into the house today (I've seen maybe 5 plays), but I usually find Danielson one of the better ones at breaking down football -- even with his not so pleasant voice.

4:23 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Ever consider that the West didn't have a dominant team in the 90s because of attrition (and some probation) from good teams playing each other? Alot easier sledding against Kentucky, Vandy, and SC on a yearly basis (and UGA really until Richt got there) than, say, Arkansas, Miss. State, and Ole Miss. That's the point I'm making.

I don't think anybody could disagree that UF's dominance would be a lot less decisive playing in the West. If you want to knock me for making a hypothetical argument, feel free, but I'm just putting an emphasis on the fact that Florida's struggles against the West are much more pronounced than against the East. Can anybody justifiably disagree with that?

Ah, screw it. I hate you guys. I'm leaving the HABOTN.

Florida is still hurting for a home run threat. They're like us in 06 and 07. Every touchdown seems to come as a result of at least an 8 or 9 play drive. You just can't score alot of points consistently playing like that. If their defense ever has a big off day, watch out.

Looks like ol' Urb studied our game film from last week.

Uh, me and you, man. Vegas.

Well, credit where credit is due. Todd overthrew that a week ago. Tebow didn't. But you're right FF, he shouldn't.

Apparently we aren't the only ones with kickoff coverage issues.

And bad tackling issues, as well.

There's no such thing as momentum I guess.

Jet, what game we playing?

Three stiff-arms, three fallen defenders.

BTW, I've been saying all along that lack of overall talent is a major contributor to our #106 ranking in kick coverage.

Then I noticed that Bama was #105. Who's their ST coach?

I don't know, E-Bro, but if you got visions like that, we'll figure something.

2nd TD pass he just flat out missed.

That's two wide open TD's Mallett has missed.

This time next week, I'll be sitting in a sports-book in Vegas watching football and drinking.

Bad route, bad pass, no TD.

5:09 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

OK, now I ask another question: where was this Florida defense the first 5 weeks of the season?

Mallet has not been sharp, or they might be up by 3 TDs.

why do players helmets come off so easy?

WVU up 17-7 over Marshall early in the 4th.

Jarret Brown went out with an injury on their first possession, they've ben playing with Geno Smith at QB for almost the entire game.
