Gene Chizik speaks, 10/19

Hey everyone. Here's a look at some of the stuff Gene Chizik had to say this afternoon:

  • On the Kentucky loss: ``Tough loss last night against Kentucky. We had our chances to win the football game. We didn't capitalize on those chances. We have to play much better to have a chance to win the game. We'll go back to work today."

  • On opponents catching on to what Auburn is doing: ``They have seen pretty much the gamut from us everywhere -- offensively, defensively. This time of the year, it's about how you're executing."

  • On what happened in the fourth quarter: ``It was a point in the game when we didn't execute. We killed the drives for whatever reason, then we had a few missed tackles when they got the ball back. It put us in a hole. I can't point out that it was fatigue. I don't know that."

  • On mid-season challenges: ``Games 7, 8, 9 in the college season are the most difficult games. There's nothing fresh. There's nothing new. It's just same, repeat. The ones that get lulled to sleep -- this is the point in the year when that can happen. It comes down to execution."

  • On Eltoro Freeman: ``We've got to get him working toward getting a better grasp. He missed a lot of football in two-a-days and early in the season. We have to get him caught up."

  • On keeping spirits high among players: ``This is new for us, this coaching staff. We make it very clear to our guy that we play through all the momentum swings -- the good and bad. The circumstances don't dictate who you are. We had a great week of practice. We had a chance to win the game. When those chances come, you have to take advantage of it. They'll keep playing hard every week. It's not an option."

  • On Chris Todd: ``We have named our starting quarterback. We've also seen him play very well. It's not just Chris. It's our whole team. It’s our offensive line at time. Nobody sees that. It our wide receivers blocking outside. Nobody sees that. He's got to get better."

  • On if Todd's shoulder could be to blame: ``No."

  • On recruiting: ``We've got a good idea of where we need to be. It's really going great."

  • On if wins and losses affect recruiting: ``It can. I don't think right now … with our commitments we've got, in my opinion, it's not going to make a difference one way or the other. Some guys want great opportunities to plays and that's one of the major factors. Everybody wants to win. I feel good about everything right now."

I'm not buying the shoulder thing. Todd's throwing motion does not look the same to me. I may be imagining things. Also, it is not the OL. He had time to set and throw, but he didn't. He threw off his back foot and his throwing arm was flailing around.

I wonder if beat writers ever roll their eyes at some of the answers they receive in press conferences.

Ok, finally a chance to catch up on Auburn.

Wow, what a crummy day yesterday. I haven't a chance to read most of the comments, so i'm sure much has been discussed before, but here are my 2 cents:

Chris Todd- His run at Auburn needs to be complete. I really enjoyed seeing him weeks 1-5, but the last 2 weeks, something is wrong. He cannot throw the ball anymore and looks to be back in 2008 form again. Play Caudle or Trotter....anybody besides him right now. I just think he is hurt. Todd is also only looking at 1 to 2 guys max in the passing game with Darvin Adams being 1 for sure. There were several times that we had guys running wide open and Todd didn't see them. The Tommy Trott open with about the closet guy at least 15 yards was the worst miss by Todd. Anyways, i'm sure this has been beaten to death. Rollison...is the future. He needs to keep the redshirt at this point and take the reigns next season.

Defense- Worst defense I have ever seen at Auburn period. They stink to high heavens and the LB'ers are the worst starting group in a long time in Auburn history. They simply have no idea on how to tackle. Bynes loves to leave his feet at the first opportunity he gets. Bates is going to be a fine player in the future, but we are lucky we don't get beat deep in the air. There is no reason for the safety to be 15 yards behind a deep pass. We are just lucky that Kentucky couldn't connect. We won't be so fortunate the rest of the season, again.

Coaching- Chizik gets an F for the Kentucky game. They came out sleep walking and the score board reflected it. I think we have a pretty good staff, but I have the most questions on defense and the lack to teach good fundamentals (which is too darn late in the season to correct IMO) and proper pursuit angles. Boulware had his bes showing despite Durst inability to punt consistantly.

It would be fair to be negative without the positives and that is Ben Tate. The guy can play. He should make some NFL club happy in the future IMO. Sorry he didn't have better times at Auburn.

Lastly, Screw Tuberville. I hate the guy right now. He absolutely left nobody there. He gets the last laugh in watching Auburn flounder due to his personal agenda. He sucked it up his last few years and we are paying a steep price. I'm willing to say that he left the program worse than Bowden did...no, I will say, he did. So here is a big FU to coach Tubs.

I love Auburn and I think these coaches will get players in here and we will be fine. Losing to Kentucky stinks and should not have happened. That is Chizik's fault, but I'm happy with where it looks like the program is headed.

Sorry for the rant, i'm sure I will upset someone, and if so, I appologize, it's not personal, just football.

Stuff like this reminds me of a class that I had at Alabama in international politics. All of our tests were essay questions.

When I received the first test back I kept seeing occasionally in red ink the letters "PBS" written beside some of my answers. It took me a few minutes to realize these letters meant Pure Bull Sh..

And the heck of it is that the professor was correct. The answers were PBS.

WTC- I agree. 7-5 was what I expected of this team and they still have a shot to get there, but it is much more difficult at this point. Just get the win at Furman and get practice to improve for next year, but most of the improving for next year will come on signing day IMO. We are headed in the right direction and if a coaching staff has to learn hard lesson's, this is the year to do so.

Eddie,

I'm guessing that like me you think that Tuberville got lazy on the recruiting trail for the last two years or so of his tenure?

If Caudle were to get a chance and not look down his receiver, he could get the job done. Save Tyrik for the future.
