Basketball roundup

Hey everyone. The Auburn men lost to Sam Houston State this afternoon at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

You read that correctly.

The Bearkats hit 58 percent of their shots from the field, including a 15-of-28 performance from three-point range. Forward Gilberto Clavell scored 34 points.

``It's obviously a frustrating game," Auburn head coach Jeff Lebo said. ``They came in here and just punched us in the face, and we didn't respond. Offensively, they were so good. Clavell just manhandled us. He absolutely hammered us, and we didn't have any answer for him."

Auburn's record fell to 5-6.

AUBURN WOMEN: Nell Fortner's Tigers were far more successful Sunday, earning a 71-50 win at South Alabama. Center KeKe Carrier continued her remarkable emergence with 23 points.

The Tigers are 8-3.

I'd be surprised if Stansbury left the Hump for Auburn. Facilities and money aside (which State may try to match if it came to money), I think he's probably pretty loyal to State at this point to at least not make a move within the division.

Besides that, the two programs don't even really compared for my money. They've made it to the Final Four before (1996) and pretty consistently make the Tourney. I think it'd be a step down for him at this point to be honest.

From a firm supporter - LEBO MUST GO!
How do you lose to a team like Sam Houston State.
In basketball if they are hot from15 feet you press from 20 ft on in. If they are hot from 30 feet you press them from 40 feet on in. If they are hot from beyond that you start pressing when they get off the bus.

FSJ at least Bama tried by gettting a new coach. It takes time for a new coach to get things going. But not 5 + years.

7:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Who do you think Auburn's new basketball coach will be?

7:19 PM
Blogger wtc said...

This basketball team is not good. Knox plays like he drank a bottle of Niquel. I think he played 15 minutes before fouling out. Hargrove defend anyone that plays Upward baskteball. And Reed has never seen a shot he didn't like. AU runs so many, scratch that. they don't ru any offensive plays. Pass it around before Reed shoots it is all they do. When they get beat by Al State Tuesday (I will be there) they will be crowned the worse team in this state.

BTW-I don't follow basketball or the recruting of basket ball players, but I know other than Sullivan, these guys are stealin' scholly money.

7:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, you all know I believe in sticking behind Auburn coaches, but five years with really no success to speak of is long enough. I appreciate Lebo's efforts, but if for no other reason, the players need Auburn to give them a better chance for success. It doesn't look like Lebo is the answer. In my opinion 4 or 5 years is more than enough time for any coach to show some kind of progress. I don't follow basketball closely, but I haven't seen anything that would make me think things are going to improve.

7:26 PM

Sam Houston State's best player, a 3pt specialist, went down with an injury about 9 minutes into the game. AU was close at that point. The sub came in and AU collapsed.

7:32 PM
Blogger wtc said...

He would bring some excitement digger. Right now, Lebo might want to rescshedule the games so they play before the women and maybe there will be a crowd by the time the mens' game ends. They can be the warm up for the lady tigers.

7:35 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

RK...yeah, I just don't think there is any comparison with the two programs in the last 10-15 years. It DOES suck to think that given the comparable resources of the two schools, but it's the truth. Maybe that can change in the future.

Building a new arena hopefully is just the beginning of a stronger commitment to AU b-ball. Lebo seems like a decent, honest guy, but he just doesn't seem to be made for big boy college basketball. It happens. Let's see if we can find one who can handle it.

What up hotties. I watched most of the game. AU was horrible in every way. They don't block out, they don't guard anyone, and don't guard anyone away from the ball. This may be the worst I've seen them. Watched the second half of the FSU game, and they looked like a different team than today.

8:10 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Jet, normally I agree that Lebo can coach. But to your point, he has not been able to recruit and keep any difference makers. You only need one or two in basketball and you can win.

8:12 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I don't buy that he can even coach. I well coached team doesn't give up 31 PF's while only drawing 18 and then hitting 50% from the line. A well coached team draws up plays that can be run with the talent he has. Not just has his guys play street ball.

I see no signs of a well coached team.

8:14 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

This team must not be too smart against minor teams they think they can throw there jock straps out on the court and win. But all they do is stink up the old arena.

8:14 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I think normally he can coach well. I don't see any signs of good coaching on this team. I was told after the Troy loss he was in big trouble. I believe this loss seals his fate. AU will have a new coach next year, weather they open the new arena w/ NC or Grambling. AU shot callers have run out of patience.

8:16 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

By the way, Jay, IMHO, Rick Stansbery is NOT the guy. He is trash. AU would be on probation within two years. Heard an SEC insider comment regarding Lebo when he was hired. "He's a great guy. He's a great coach. Won't win at Auburn. Won't cheat. Doesn't know how to cheat." That's it in college basketball. Much much dirtier than football.

9:24 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

No..but it is a great idea.

Those boxes they have you put your chicken in are small. Most contest folks use thighs because they don't dry out as easily as breasts do.

Using those muffin tins would certainly help keep them uniform size in the box.

I grill chicken thighs often, for big crowds. They are much easier to cook as they do not dry out as easy as chicken breasts. I just don't BBQ them. Mostly dry rub and then mop with the dry rub mixed with water/vinegar.

There's a good one in Birmingham every August. It's pretty big and draws some of the top teams. The one in Decatur is pretty good too.

Gadsden has one in April of this year. We are going to try to cook in all three of those for sure.

Those three are all sanctioned by the KCBS.. We didn't/couldn't sell any meat but after our turn ins we gave away what we had left as samples to anybody that wanted some. They told us 'officially' not to but every team was giving it away so there's plenty to eat. It's like a big tailgate party to be honest. On Friday nights they usually have bands playing and stuff. Saturday gets pretty serious until the last turn in...

From what I have read, I think we have a very good shot of getting Newton and I do believe he thinks he would be the clear choice for the starting job. If I were him I would seriously consider MSU since he only has two years of elligibility and I do think we have some other people that could fight him for the job.

Watching this MTSU offense is frustrating because a lot of it, before the snap, looks like us last season. The similarity seems to end there.

10:09 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Well, Franklin's offense was able to score 27 points on Southern Miss last year, and we probably should have had another 14 in that game from what I remember.

Of course, I'm trying to remember very little from 2008.

10:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

E-Bro, we weren't executing that offense nearly as well as MTSU is executing it with less talent.

10:30 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Agreed on both posts Steve. I was just making the general point that Southern Miss is the one team we actually moved the ball against consistently and scored some points.

10:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And I am very excited about our chances with a new QB. Todd is what I would consider a pretty solid QB, but certainly not a star. The potential of this offense with a very talented QB is very exciting. The more I learn about Moseley and Newton, the more I like them, basically, because I think they will be durable. I am hoping Rollison is up to around 220 pounds. I like QBs with a bit of beef on them.

As for Caudle, the fact that they went after Newton and have apparently made him an offer says to me that they don't think a lot of Caudle.

10:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, my view of the QB race has changed a lot recently. More and more I am thinking Moseley is in the lead with Rollison second. That view is likely to change when we see more during the spring.

10:38 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I don't see Mosely getting it. I know stars aren't everything. But I think Rollison and Newton (if he does come) are probably much more talented QB's, and all three have been winner's in the past. I've been wrong in the past, but I just don't see it.

10:45 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I haven't really seen enough of Moseley or Rollison for that matter to say which is more talented. As for Newton, if what little I have seen is for real, he is a real difference maker.

The reason I like Moseley's chances are the comments from coaches, primarily Roof. Apparently Moseley really embraced his job as the scout team QB and Roof was very impressed by him.

Like I say, my opinion has and likely will change. The indications now seem to be Moseley, but once Rollison gets the opportunity to prove himself in the spring, it could very well change.

As for Newton, if we get him I would immediately think he would be the favorite based upon a lot of factors.

10:50 PM
Blogger Turfman said...

Rollison will never be 200lbs much less 220. I think Rollison is the fav until Newton comes in. Newton can beat out the frosh thats why hes comming in.

10:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That I agree with Turfman. And that is why Caudle has dropped so much in my eyes. I don't think they go after Newton if they cannot honestly tell him that they think he has a good chance of being the starter. He just has a lot of positives going for him.

As for Rollison, I thought he was about 6'2", so I would think breaking 200 wouldn't be an issue.

As for Caudle, he doesn't seem to have the frame to carry a lot of weight from what I have seen, but I could be wrong.

10:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for Rollison, I haven't seen the coaches throw a lot of praise his way yet. He hasn't really proven anything on the college level. He is a question mark for me.

I have even seen Trotter getting some praise, but he is relatively slow, slower than Todd. He probably has a better knowledge of the offense than most, but he lacks experience and proven decision making.

In my book decision making decides your QB, not speed or arm strength. Accuracy has to figure in there to, but I kind of group it with decision making. Good ball placement can make up for some things.

11:06 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Trotter slower than Todd? I heard he runs the zone-read well and according to scout runs a faster 40.

Remember, they considered pulling the RS on Trotter last season due to his awesomeness on the scout team as well.

I do remember reading that Trotter was good at the read option and an accurate QB. I also recall reading he was slow, and I thought slower that Todd. We shall have to see how it plays out. Next to Moseley, Trotter has gotten the most praise from the coaches recently, and I do like the fact he was at every game this season, including road trips. That surprised me. He was very involved with the play calling. I think knowledge of the offense is going to be where he has an edge.

Changing HCs and OCs over the past few years has resulted in 6 QBs on scholly this past season ...on a team with about +/-72 scholly players. We still got 5 QBs on scholly and it seems that the coaches don't have enough confidence in that group and are looking to add a 6th.

The good news: we have a 2009 scholly to give.

The sad news: Not one of those 5 QBs has shown the coaches that we don't need to try a 6th QB.

CN brings a lot of accolades, but so did Kodi and Caudle. Is this the perfect guy? or will he use up reps that are better spent on someone already on campus?

I remember the fans clamoring for Kodi in 2006 and 2007...and then all of the practice/game reps that Kodi got. I just wonder if some of the others would be more developed if they had got those reps instead.

The coaches will have a lot of QB stuff to figger-on.

Hoopie, I've talked about that a few times, and I agree, but none of those QBs have possessed the SIZE plus athleticism Newton does. It is much easier for a bigger QB to succeed in the college game than a smaller one. I'm not saying a short/small QB can't succeed, but the cards are stacked against them. Look at Leake from Florida. He threw a beautiful ball, had good presence, and was an elite prospect. If he had been 6'3" or taller, he'd probably be making millions. The exact opposite is Jamarcus Russell. He's terrible. Very inaccurate. But he's huge. That size was a huge factor in his success on the college level, and probably 90% of the reason he was chosen #1 overall.

Kodi has the athleticism, but is listed at 6'1" (I think he's an inch or so on the other side of 6' personally). On the other hand, Jason Campbell is 6'5" (and yes, Jason would tower over Kodi). Cam is 6'6". Height is a HUGE plus for QBs on the college level. If he was 6'2" or under, I'd say forget about him and go with what we have. But the 6'6, 250 lb line is what has really gotten me excited.

Hey Hotties!

Finally back from vacation. Missed this place a little bit.

Hoopie,

People were clamoring for Kodi in 2007 mainly because of how badly Brandon Cox and our offense started off the 2007 season. Then Kodi got to play vs Miss State and started vs New Mexico State and most people realized at the time it wasn't just the QB that was the problem with the 2007 team on offense.

Once Franklin came in and we ran a ton of plays and had a good offensive day in the bowl game vs Clemson expectations for Burns went through the roof. Sadly it doesn't look like that will pan out for him.

Blogger Seanzie said...

I hear ya Eddie, it's tough getting caught up.

I'm down if the kid wants to come and play. If not, we have some options at QB.

8:36 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Scottie,

We have scholarships available, if Newton wants to come in and the coaches feel like he's straightened his act up, then by all means we could use improved QB play...maybe he can supply that.

8:39 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

it works for me RK. what skill player wouldn't want to play with the top JUCO transfer? it sure can't hurt recruiting.

8:41 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Sean- I'm not even going to try and get caught up. That would take forever!

I'll just go with the flow.

I'm surprised we are signing another QB, but I'm sure the staff has their reasons and I trust them. He seems like a good kid to get.

As far as Lebo- Fire him, but I've been saying this for awhile.

8:46 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Eddie,

I'll try to catch you up...

Frankenbummer and SteveFC have had a strange battle that was to culminate in a battle by the flag pole on the playground, but it never happened. However I think the battle continues.

A lot of talk about the QB position for next year.

A unified front about getting rid of Lebo.

Steve comparing Franklin's offense from last night to ours from last year when he was here.

Also a new theme developed where you post something as if it's a fact, then immediately follow up saying "I read somewhere that (fill in the item that you posted previously)"

I think that's all, I could be wrong.

Speaking of Steve's...

Eddie may remember this, when I worked in talk radio we had a guy call in whose name was "War Eagle Steve". However he'd call in at the beginning of the season and brag, then would only call in on the monday's after an Auburn win and talk trash...but he would be nowhere to be found if we lost the game.

It would drive me crazy as I would catch the grief for him because he'd never call back in to take his medicine.

When Tony Franklin is your OC, things can get exciting.

Last year's bubble screen in the end zone was my personal fave.

The 4th and 1 play with the sideways pass to the sideline might take the cake.

Who has the best chance of being Auburn's basketball coach next season, Lebo are Charlie Weis? Sure, Lebo has the edge, but I say the gap is narrowing.

To better explain and further aid our march to a flip ... the 4th and 1 was a Middle Tennessee play last night.

Whatever drugs they had on the MTSU sideline must be some good stuff. The Blue Raider QB suffered two sprained ankles and kept on pluggin'.

12:37 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Well, he was certainly asleep at the wheel that final season.

12:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Do not underestimate the power of the bubble screen. We kept trying it with the anticipation that it would catch the defense off guard. My guess is that if we had just ran it about 10 more times per game, someone might have been surprised.

AS for last season, discussing it with an analogy my be best. We were in a high stakes poker game. Each coach had a different strategy. The first coach looked at his cards and said he would stick with those because they added up to 20, the second coach looked at his card and inexplicably said "have you got any threes", and the third coach threw his cards on the table and said "Gin".
