Hey everyone. We have just concluded the Outback Bowl teleconference with a few people whose opinions matter.
Let's do this.
Let's do this.
- JIM McVAY, Outback Bowl czar
- On why he picked Auburn, a West team, after taking East teams for 13 consecutive years: ``There were a number of really good teams with 7-5 records. We watched Auburn all year. A lot of really, really good things kept coming up about Auburn. We typically take teams from the East -- but we've talked about having a better way of getting better circulation in the West. It was the perfect opportunity and the perfect time to bring Auburn back."
- On why he picked Northwestern over Wisconsin: ``Wisconsin and Northwestern played a couple weeks ago and Northwestern beat them. It just seemed like they would be a team ... the head-to-head was really the final decision. We're going to bring a team to our game that hasn't been to the Outback Bowl. They're a fun and wide-open offense. It really came down to how Northwestern won that game (against Wisconsin) and they deserved it."
- On the significance of Auburn's win against Tennessee on how this all played out: ``It absolutely added to the argument. Auburn beat Tennessee. Auburn beat Ole Miss. And then the way they played against Alabama. I think Auburn can play with anybody in the country."
- JAY JACOBS, Auburn athletic director
- On how aggressive he was in pursuing this deal: ``I'm not sure we took a more active role than some of my peers in the league. We began to contact bowls to find out what they needed from us to make a good business decision. We were very proactive what we were doing all day Sunday and all day Monday."
- On what he's expecting in terms of ticket sales: ``We went ahead and put options up there on the tickets. There were good reasons for it not being official (until today). Based on the chatter and the emails and everything during the past week, it's been going very, very well. We expect it to be very, very successful."
- GENE CHIZIK, Auburn football coach
- On what this bowl means to Le Programme: ``What we wanted to do this year was start building a foundation for a great, great future. You sit there and you look at being able to end the season with an Outback bowl invitation with a good team from team from the Big 10. What does everybody want? A New Year's Day bowl game."
- More along those same lines: ``Ending the year like this gets our fans … in a frenzy. It's important in terms of people seeing where this program is headed."
- BEN TATE, tailback
- On his reaction to finding out Auburn was selected for the Outback
Bowl: ``I was excited when I heard we were going to the Outback Bowl. It’s a great reward for us. To get a bid to a New Year’s Day bowl shows how much respect people have for Auburn, since they picked us over so many other teams they could have taken. I’m just really looking forward to playing Northwestern, having fun, and doing our best to win the game."

Ridiculous or not, it is the truth.
NCAA lists us as 28th giving up 191.83 yds/gm. Wildcats are giving up 220.
And yikes we've given up an average 161 yds rushing /game and NW is giving up 123.5
Like Steve said, Pre-Bama we were terrible against the run, and almost decent against the pass.
We are 28th nationally against the pass. Here is a link to a story from ESPN with the number in it. Whether some kid on the net thinks it ridiculous doesn't change reality.
Actually, our corners are probably the strength of the defense, although McFadden has had some trouble lately.
McFadden has been banged up hasn't he?
I am not sure of that, but I would suspect so. The only part of our defense that has any kind of depth these days is the line. These kids are playing a lot of snaps.
The rest we will get before the Bowl game should help both the offense and defense. If Roof will be aggresive like the Bama game we should be in good shape. Also Malzahn should keep the pedal to the metal on offense.
I seem to recall him getting up slow quite a bit the second half, and more than one time seeing the other players getting him up.
not you.
I wonder if the loss of Etheridge will actually help the pass defense. From what I had heard, Etheridge is very good in run support. I can't really say that I have spent a lot of time watching him. Demond Washington is an experienced guy. Maybe he will be a better fit for us against Northwestern.
I guess you can't underestimate the value of Etheridge as a team leader and making defensive adjustments.
Not to talk badly about a kid who is injured but Ethridge got ate alive a lot by crossing routes and would leave his feet too much attempting to make a play that he couldn't make.
Yea, from what I understand at times he has had trouble in coverage, but he has been a solid contributor through his Auburn career. He isn't a star and not likely to play on Sundays, but he has his good points.
Etheridge ALWAYS took a bad angle to tackle a guy. ALways, Always, Always.
I am not sure the AU defense missed him that much other than as someone to get some snaps.
What I would say in defense of Zac is that we still had trouble covering crossing routes against Bama.
Depth and experience wise we miss him.
He's an average SEC DB.
That's true EBro, it's hard to cover Julio's big body on a crossing route as he can block out the defender.
RK, I agree. He is average. I guess the best thing about him is that he had been so consistent. He wasn't injury prone.
I really think we needed to call a timeout in the middle of that Bama drive. They had our defense on it's heals and I think they needed a break. Hindsight is 20/20 though.
PF, i'm lovin' your new avatar.
nice.
I am very curious how the Rollison suspension will affect the QB race for next season. Missing 3 weeks of practice won't help his case. I would guess Caudle is the favorite, but supposedly Moseley has been very impressive on the scout team. Who knows where Trotter will fit in the mix. My initial guess at next season's QB depth chart would be:
1. Caudle
2. Rollison
3. Moseley
4. Trotter
There really is no telling at this point, but if we can find a solid QB we could be very good. I think we see a drop off after 2010 because of the offensive line grads, but find a solid QB and we could have a special 2010.
What about me Scottie B?
luv ya norm, but....
i like your pirate look much better.
Where did you get that picture, Norm? I would like the high quality version to send all of my bammer friends. It is just too good.
Michael - my email is on my profile, shoot me a message and I'll get it to you.
I'm going to dedicate this upcoming lunch to Heisman deliberation.
Then it's ON.
Michael: I didn't know you were two-timing us with Bitter's blog.
pick anybody but Ingram JG.
anybody.
Jay G, I would never read another blog. Ever. I can't believe you would even suggest that sort of thing is happening. I mean, it's me, MJT, I would never. Don't believe anything you hear. There are a lot of liars out there. You should call them liars and ignore them after you have decided they are liars.
The off season is going ot be very important for this staff.
They have some very good recruits, butneed to get depth on the D side of the ball.
DB is very important and they do nto have that remotely covered yet.
and Jay, please don't vote for Ingram. That is all I ask.
I would personally go Gerhart or Spiller. None of the contenders had transcendent offensive players in my opinion.
I sure hope that when this dust settles between MJT and JGT that we don't find out that there are actually upwards of 6 other blogs being followed by MJT. Such a thing would be worthy of a good old fashioned Swedish beatdown.
Norm, if one of the other blogs come at him with a 5 iron then i guess we'll know.
Top defenses make the other team one demensional. You start, in this conference, by having a solid D line and then lock down DB's. Most sacks these days come from not having SUPER Dline play, but SUPER cover guys that allow the dline time to get pressure. AU needs some SUPER cover guys. Not just fast guys, but guys that can come in press coverage and knock the WR's in the dirt from the start.
Also, look how many interference calls UA had this year. I woul dsay it was not very many. They put there hands the WR but they do it the way they are taught. Interference calls crush a D. Look at how manytimes we are on 3rd and long and maybe we stopped them but had PI called. We saty on the field and get wore down.
If not PI, then we just went for an old-fashioned facemask penalty. Unfortunately, there are no more old-fashioned five-yarders in that category.
I would like to apologize for the multiple mistakes that I have made that may have hurt my relationship with HABOTN. I will never do anything like that again (unless I think the other blog is really hot and I am lonely)
In previous years, MJT could have claimed an incidental visit to another blog...not anymore. It's now a full-fledged personal foul on number "M".
hey has Tubs name been thrown around for any coaching jobs? Just wondering
We could really use a couple of more DBs in this recruiting class. Hopefully Etheridge will be back next season, but you never can tell.
Suh for Heisman!
Name has been mentioned Bigdaddy, but nothing looks promising for him.
I heard his name mentioned for Notre Dame yesterday, now that was funny.
Jay: Great article about the SECCG. Ya know, you could change beats and it would still be the HABOTN.
:^)
Just sayin.
What is the news on Goodwin. Shopping?
Mark- Goodwin is apparently feeling pressure from family and friends to stay in Georgia and had re-opened his commitment from what I've seen. Some say this was more to appease them, but it is a concern. Goodwin has always been a main target for Auburn, so they are staying on him hard. It will be interesting to see what happens.
I can't really see Tuberville at Notre Dame. It isn't his climate. My guess is still he ends up in the Big 12, possibly Kansas. The ACC is another possibility.
I think he would have been a good fit at Miami, it is a school that is fairly easy to recruit to, there is so much talent in South Florida, but they look set at Coach. I think TAMU was another good fit, but their coach bought himself another year there.
I don't see him at Kansas, no warmer than Notre Dame.
It's looking more and more like he isn't getting a job this year.
So Kansas is more Tub's climate?
My Guess is Tubs ends up at some small school or a school in a decent conference that is a basketball school. Big time College football coaching is done with Tuberville IMO.
I thought Bitter is on furlough.
My Heisman ballot:
1- Ndamukong Suh
2- Tony Gerhardt
3- Kellen Moore
I think weight expect a committment sometime soon from an instate DB... A guy from Karlos Dansby's alma mater.
We're not out of it for Goodwin... Hold on tight, the recruiting roller coaster is gonna be a fun ride over the next couple of months!!
just got 8 extra Google Wave invites if anyone wants one.
Miller-time,
You've got a Heisman vote?
Bitter who, PF?
Bitter females are out to take our stuff.
Norm I love the new pic.
And PF big snacks to you for the TO pic.
I wish, PF.
I am trying to help JGT make the right choices on his ballot.
Suh is by far the most dominant player in CFB this season... In fact, he's the most dominant I have seen in quite a long time, regardless of position.
If the Heisman is truly supposed to go to the best player, the Suh has to be the choice.
Gerhardt was the most consistent offensive player I saw play this year - he never had a bad game.
Moore's numbers are just sick. You could also make a case for Case Keenum here too.
I get that Ingram was a very good player on a very good team, but his numbers don't completely overshadow those of anyone else in the country, or his own conference. I don't even personally think he is the best RB on his own team. I'm more impressed with Richardson as a runner.
But, the Heisman isn't supposed to go to just a very good player, especially if there is an exceptionally great one out there. Suh is that exceptionally great player.
PF, since you have some spare invites. I wouldn't mind playing around with Wave to see what it is all about. That is, if you don't mind sharing.
Why I refer to climate and Tuberville, I am not talking about weather. I doubt he would want to go to some place like Notre Dame where the pressure is what it is. I see him similar to Spurrier, finding a place that is a bit less demanding.
I do think the weather climate will weigh into his decision, but the political/social climate would be more important. If it weren't for the location, one of the Washington schools might be a destination, although the weather there isn't as extreme as you might tend to think.
D.Miller- I agree completely. Was telling a friend the same thing. Suh is the best player in college football right now and very well may be the first player taken in the draft. This is one year that a defensive player deserves the award IMO.
Anyone other than Charles Woodson won the Heisman as a defensive player?
Of course, Woodson didn't deserve it over Manning that year.
I do think that defensive players deserve more credit. When I think of the Heisman I think of the player whose loss would most affect his team. That can definitely be a defensive or offensive player.
My Heisman ballot:
1) Ingram
2) McClain
3) Suh
Michael says Andy Bitter chose Toby Gerhart.
Ingram is going to get it, it was McCoy's to lose, and he lost it. I think Spiller was the most spectacular player this year, but he had too many off games. Suh is probably most deserving but its not going to happen. If it was between Ingram and one other player, the other guy would get it. But all of the voters who go with the most obvious choice will go with Ingram, and there are too many other choices for the voters who put alot of thought into it.
My $0.02
homer
FSJ, who do you think the best runningback on your team is?
FSJ,
you have a Heisman vote, too?
lol with that said I don't think he deserves it, its just what I see happening.
My ballot would be
1)McCoy
2)Suh
3)Spiller
I wouldn't go for McCoy because I think you have to look at how players did in their team's biggest games.
I am a homer...no doubt.
With that said...
McClain is our best player..
Unfortunately a defensive player isn't going to win.
No Peter...
But I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express lately.
Steve,
Ingram's the starter. I have a hard time believing Saban wouldn't be starting his best back..
With that said, Richardson has the most upside.
Also, I've heard rave reviews about a kid we have redshirting this year... Lacy I think.
I agree with FSJ on the best back. From what I've seen, Richardson is the most talented back. But Ingram's experience has helped him find the holes.
I still say Ingram is not a supreme talent. He is a good back that fits perfectly in his offense.
I think the thing is that there is not one name out there that has captured everybody's imagination..
When that happens....you have a choice between a bunch of "excellent" players....not necessarily a bunch of great players.
Mark Ingram was shut down in Iron Bowl by one of the worst defenses in Auburn history. He was a complete non-factor. We made his @$$ quit as the Bammers are fond of saying. How can that guy win the Heisman?
Because as was mentioned yesterday one game does not make a season..
Bo had two crappy games the year he won.
I don't think the Iron Bowl (OR THE SECCG) is the deciding factor. I admittedly only watch 3 or 4 full games, to mean he just wasn't on the heisman level in any games.
He isn't a Bo, or a Bush, or Ricky Williams, or Ron Dayne (both of those set records) or Herschel or so on or so forth.
I admittedly haven't watched Nebraska play all that much, but from what little I've seen and from what everyone says, Suh seems to be the most deserving.
LOL @ FSJ. I have seen Bo Jackson on film...and Mark Ingram, sir is no Bo Jackson.
FSJ, you just had your Dan Quayle moment.
Uh..where did I say he was Bo Jackson?..
I said that Bo Jackson had two crappy games and still won.
Please point out where I said that? Or are you having an Olbermann moment?
I made an argument, you countered with Bo Jackson. I made the connection. Were you in fact not trying to make a comparison between Bo Jackson's Heisman Year vs. Mark Ingram's potential Heisman year?
Big time players show up in big time games, particularly when they are going up against a less than top notch defense. I don't follow Alabama, but from what I have seen Richardson is a better back, mainly because of quickness. They looked comparable to me in terms of strength. I am not sure about the speed.
Sean,
Not to defend Ingram or even come close to comparing him to Bo...however a lot of people said Bo quit during the 1985 Auburn/UT game where we came in ranked # 1 and got slaughtered.
I made a point that one game doesn't decide the Heisman. Since this is an Auburn blog I pointed out that the greatest RB in Auburn history had two poor games the year he won.
I did not say that Ingram was Bo. Ingram isn't even Shaun Alexander, but he's the UA single season record holder... He's also got a darn good shot to win the the Heisman and earn a national championship ring.
Pretty good, IMO.
I think it was Florida where Bo pulled himself from the game, which many questioned. I could be wrong. It was long ago and my memory isn't what it once was.
Steve,
It was UT.
He did play with broke ribs against UA though.
Well RK, I wouldn't know about that, I was only a year old at the time.
I'm really just busting FSJ's chops. I get it that he's a homer, but THE MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, doesn't do the following:
Arkansas: 17/50/2.9/1 TD
Tennessee: 18/99/5.5/0 TD/ 1 Fumble
Auburn: 16/30/1.9/0 TD
Two of those games are UT's biggest rivals. The YPC are there for UT, but his fumble let UT back in the door.
By the way, the comment Olbermann....harsh!
I do think FSJ makes a point regarding Ingram vs. Richardson. Ingram had the experience, thus being the better option firbthe team at this time. Richardson was allowed to learn and get acclimated to the college game while Ingram toted the load. Talent-wise, Richardson is the better of the two. By the end of the season, Richardson looked to be the better runner to me.
Ingram has good balance and strength, which helped him bounce off and through arm tackles. Richardson has better leg drive and far more upside.
Excuse me, UA's biggest rivals, not UT. Ingram is a very good player. He's not excellent and he's not great. Therefore, IMO, he shouldn't win the Heisman. On a related note, the NC is Bama's to lose.
Firbthe = for the
By the way, what's with Blogger showing wacky comment numbers? It seems like it changes every time I go back and forth from the main page and switch between comment sections.
Also, to give credit where credit is due, Ingram had a 3 game run starting with UK where he was awesome. Other gmaes of note, Virginia Tech, LSU and most recently, Florida.
ingram sucks...
This year's Heisman is a tough one, much like the year that Gino Toretta won it, nobody just jumps out at you.
Gino Toretta sucks, too.
...and he wears white socks with a suit.
PF I like the way you're thinking.
I like CJ Spiller. When he played, he was dynamic.
Rushing:
201/1145/5.7/11 TDs
Receiving:
33/445/13.5/4 TDs
Punt Returns:
13/210/1 TD
Kick Returns:
21/708/4 TDs
Passing:
1/2/17/1 TD.
He also dominated in their biggest game of the year:
20/233/11.7/4 TDs
