Comments from People

Hey everyone. We have just concluded the Outback Bowl teleconference with a few people whose opinions matter.

Let's do this.

    JIM McVAY, Outback Bowl czar

  • On why he picked Auburn, a West team, after taking East teams for 13 consecutive years: ``There were a number of really good teams with 7-5 records. We watched Auburn all year. A lot of really, really good things kept coming up about Auburn. We typically take teams from the East -- but we've talked about having a better way of getting better circulation in the West. It was the perfect opportunity and the perfect time to bring Auburn back."

  • On why he picked Northwestern over Wisconsin: ``Wisconsin and Northwestern played a couple weeks ago and Northwestern beat them. It just seemed like they would be a team ... the head-to-head was really the final decision. We're going to bring a team to our game that hasn't been to the Outback Bowl. They're a fun and wide-open offense. It really came down to how Northwestern won that game (against Wisconsin) and they deserved it."

  • On the significance of Auburn's win against Tennessee on how this all played out: ``It absolutely added to the argument. Auburn beat Tennessee. Auburn beat Ole Miss. And then the way they played against Alabama. I think Auburn can play with anybody in the country."

    JAY JACOBS, Auburn athletic director

  • On how aggressive he was in pursuing this deal: ``I'm not sure we took a more active role than some of my peers in the league. We began to contact bowls to find out what they needed from us to make a good business decision. We were very proactive what we were doing all day Sunday and all day Monday."

  • On what he's expecting in terms of ticket sales: ``We went ahead and put options up there on the tickets. There were good reasons for it not being official (until today). Based on the chatter and the emails and everything during the past week, it's been going very, very well. We expect it to be very, very successful."

    GENE CHIZIK, Auburn football coach

  • On what this bowl means to Le Programme: ``What we wanted to do this year was start building a foundation for a great, great future. You sit there and you look at being able to end the season with an Outback bowl invitation with a good team from team from the Big 10. What does everybody want? A New Year's Day bowl game."

  • More along those same lines: ``Ending the year like this gets our fans … in a frenzy. It's important in terms of people seeing where this program is headed."

    BEN TATE, tailback

  • On his reaction to finding out Auburn was selected for the Outback
    Bowl:
``I was excited when I heard we were going to the Outback Bowl. It’s a great reward for us. To get a bid to a New Year’s Day bowl shows how much respect people have for Auburn, since they picked us over so many other teams they could have taken. I’m just really looking forward to playing Northwestern, having fun, and doing our best to win the game."

Iowa State vs Minnesota in the Insight Bowl. Who ends up with a losing season?

6:18 PM

I have to say, I'm intrigued by the Las Vegas bowls matchup featuring BYU and a team that was less than a touchdown from being in the Rose Bowl, Oregon State.

You play football in sunny southern California for UCLA. How bad does it suck to go play in th $5 Hot-n-Ready Bowl in the hellhole that Detroit has become...against Ohio. Yeah, great way to spend Boxing Day (and Xmas).

ESPN is saying Marshall vs Ohio in Detroit. I don't blame UCLA for turning that one down.

But I only see one PAC-10 spot listed, the Holiday Bowl, and neither Arizona or UCLA are shown elsewhere in ESPN's bowl pairings.

What is due south of Detroit? Canada. I'm with PF. I say pay Canada $1M to take it from us.

6:52 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Norm, I doubt Canada is that gullible.

On second thought, they'd be gaining the Red Wings, so they might think they are getting a bargain if we can just get them to keep their focus on the puck.

Can't we just take Vancouver in exchange?

Yep, looks like it's changed since I posted that.

UCLA is now listed as a possible for the Eagle Bank is Army doesn't take it.

Pac-10:

Arizona is confirmed in the Holiday Bowl vs Nebraska.

Cal to the Poinsettia vs Utah

USC to Emerald vs BC.

Oregon State to Las Vegas vs BYU

anyone know of a Bowl Pick'em for money? last year a guy from Chicago formed a group; set it up through paypal. you sent money, he sent the password. it made Bowl season extremely fun, with confidence points, spreads, etc. I actually watched every game and enjoyed them all, hoping my team would win/cover.. it was 30 bucks a head, and he got like 40 people in it.. split the winnings 70-20-10

7:12 PM

BCS is almost all B and S, and very little C.

Stick the two BCS busters in a game against each other (never mind that it's a rematch of their bowl game last year) instead of giving them the opportunity of showing they are better than the BCS teams.

7:21 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

yeah, he checked himself in for "Chest Pains," was treated for dehydration and released. Sounds like someone's a little melodramatic to me.

7:22 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Cincy's defense is not what you call good.

I'm not saying it will be an absolute stinker. Maybe 15 points or so. I'm just not that excited about the game.

Also, if Brian Kelly leaves, I imagine that might wreak havoc with their bowl preparations.

7:24 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

no, their d sucks, but I think they find a way to score early and often on Florida's D. I think it's a shootout...When was the last time UF was in a shootout?

7:26 PM

the dehydration talk was a cover up.

Blogger Miller said...

Bear,
I'll look into setting up a paypal if the Hotties want to place a small wager on the bowl pick 'em. I'll also set up the bowl pick 'em online at one of the websites.

If you'll advertise it and drum up the interest... I'll set it up.

7:29 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Urban finally realized that his time with Timmy was coming to and end... he had a broken heart

7:29 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I don't think Florida's defense all the sudden stinks. They sucked yesterday.

I think Cincy can win, but it will be because Florida cares absolutely nothing about playing the game.

Multiple times this year Cincy has lost the time of possession battle by an obscene amount (talking 15-20 minute margin).

If they do that against the Gators, they're in trouble.

7:31 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

But my main point is that I'm just not looking forward to the Sugar Bowl that much. It's not because I think it will be a blowout or anything.

The match-up just doesn't excite me. If I hated Florida more, maybe it would. That's why enjoyed the Sugar Bowl last year. I was rooting hard for the Utes.

Also, having lived out close to Mountain West territory during last year's season, I was familiar with Utah and thought they were a sound football team.

7:34 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

i will get the word out.. thanks, b/c i know nothing about using paypal... thank goodness my wife is an accountant.. on another topic, when Dansby was announced at this game, he gave props to his HS, not Auburn. I know that is the "new" thing, but a small slap in the face, IMO

7:39 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Brian Kelley beating Urban, right before taking the man's "dream job." Or possibly, Urban taking the dream job away from Kelley after repeatedly saying he's staying in Mullettown, FL forever...either way, it makes for a good storyline, and I think Cincy's offense matches up well with the Gaytor D.

Go strange Asian Mammaels.

7:41 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

TCU has to play a very good team they beat in last year's bowl. That will be more difficult, and much less rewarding, than if they were playing any of the other BCS bowl teams.

7:53 PM

I just can't imagine 34 Bowls, that is ridiculous. No wonder they made the bowl requirements so low. There aren't 68 teams in the country really qualified for bowls.

Ebro ...I'm guessing that your dad is having Barfield flashbacks.

$aban has built a machine. It may take us a couple of years to equal them. Trends cycle through much faster than in years ago and we'll get back on top.

$aban can't do the dastardly things to keep us down that Bryant did. Today's information age and ESPN scrutiny won't allow it.

Although Bama has given $aban the keys to the place, there isn't the recriprocal love there was with Bryant and there won't be any patience either. Those idiots will soon "expect" a championship every year and start grumbling. CN's will tell them to shut up or he will leave. Eventually he will leave.

Lowder's negative influence-clandestine meddling is waning and folks around the SEC now know that. We will soon not be handicapped by that either.

AU will be fine.

Blogger BinOBA said...

Outstanding job in the first year if you ask me. Especially if we can go in and win this game. Lots coming back next season and the talent joining them will help as well. This extra month of practice will go a long way in developing some players as well.

7:58 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Bin the extra practice is really a big plus for teams that go to a bowl. New Years day bowls I assume gives teams even a little more time.

8:00 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

that extra month of practice is why I'm surprised Notre Dame decided not to go to a bow. Pretty selfish of the leftover coaches and seniors, if you ask me. A chance for them to possibly get the new coach in, and the youngsters to get some much needed extra reps, especially with Clausen and Tate probably leaving, is something the AD should've made happen.

This is what cheering instead of booing your team will get you. This is from Track-em-Tigers:

It sounds like Auburn fans played a part in grabbing the Outback Bowl invitation. "When we heard of the Auburn fans chanting at the end of Friday's game, 'It's great to be an Auburn Tiger' we knew there was something special about the excitement around this football team," said Outback chairman Jim McVay.
"The Tigers have everything we're looking for in a New Year's Day team - they are a tough, exciting team, extremely well coached and have what might be the best fans in college football."

I know my opinion means nothing, but in terms of Heisman, which I believe should go to the best college player, I think the best I have seen this year are:

ndonkeykung suh
toby G
colt m

I think if you took any of these 3 away from their teams, they lose at least 8-9 games each

9:03 PM

Colt McCoy
Toby Gerhard
Ndonkeykong Suh
CJ Spiller

3) Kellen Moore (Incredible #'s in leading BSU to an undefeated season)

He only had 4 games with more than 100 yards rushing.

9:26 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Spiller is an easy winner over Ingram and would give any of my other Heisman favs a run for their money.

Spiller had 33 receptions for 445 yards and 4TD
201 rushes for 1145 yards and 11TD
a huge KO return avg with 4 returns for TD (setting career KO return for TD record with 8)

9:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

digger, bowl teams get 15 practices to prepare regardless of when the bowl is played.

9:32 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I think the consistency of Gerhardt has to rank him above Ingram...

I know it's a body of work... but thinking of Ingram having 30 yards in a game against his in-state rival... a team who only played 13 total defensive players for the game and only 3 LB's for the whole game.... a Heisman worthy candidate doesn't go M.I.A. in a game like that...

Dion Lewis of Pitt should also be above Ingram.

Then there are the RBs who accumulated great stats even while handicapped by crappy teams, a la Ryan Mathews and Donald Buckram. I'd definitely take Lewis over Ingram. I haven't seen Buckram, so can't say there. I saw Mathews early in the year and don't remember being WOW'd.

9:41 PM
Blogger Frame said...

I completely agree, but I don't believe that it could happen at this point. This is pretty much the best chance for a non-'skill' player to win the award. There aren't any dominant QBs, RBs, WRs or WR/DB/KRs, and there just so happens to be one of the most dominant DTs to come around in a while. If Suh doesn't win it, they need to just change the criteria for the award to the best player on a top-five team.

9:43 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

WERK - you're almost making me want to change my mind and vote for Ingram!

nope, I can't in good conscience hope for someone as undeserving as Ingram to get a Heisman.

As much as I hate Bama, Mark Ingram should be the Heisman trophy winner. He and the stats and the wins. Congrats to him.

The group will be set up shortly on Yahoo!, in similar fashion to the season long pick 'em contest.
First, we need to do a little housekeeping.

Poll questions:

Q1) How much do we want to set the entry fee?
a) $5
b) $10
c) $20
d) $35 ($1 per game)

Q2) How do we want to structure the payout?
a) Winner Take All
b) Pay top 2 70/30 split
c) Pay top 3 70/20/10 split

I need answers to these questions, ASAP.... you can post them here or email me at the email in my blooger profile.
Also, please let me know if you plan to participate.

Once I get answers, I'll post the group login info as well as other pertinent instructions.

Yeah, he tore it up on the ground last night, but it's what he did all around that was generally amazing. The guy seemed to be good for at least one 40+ yard touchdown (whether returning, running, or receiving) a game.

No chance to win, but he definitely deserves to be in New York. Same goes for Suh.

"AP All Day gets stopped for no gain more than any other "best running back in the league" I've ever seen."

Barry Sanders was worse. Sanders would have 10 carries for 1 total yard every game, then break a 60 yarder.

Good morning, Hotties, and War Eagle!

Luv...have others claimed an easy win is on the books? I think Auburn has a fair chance of winning, but I don't think anyone can say Auburn does anything easy this year.

E-Bro, only one person on the HABOTN said something negative, but that's because most of the Hotties are fair, intelligent and have common sense. I'm sure there are people that aren't happy with the matchup, but then, they don't fall into the above category either.

Tar Heel, after watching Dion Lewis on Saturday, he is my new favorite player that isn't an Auburn Tiger. Kudos to the coach that recruited him regardless of how the "experts" had him ranked. And, what a heartbreaker that game was for the Panthers and their fans. I could have cried for them!

Did anyone hear what Herbie said on ESPN's bowl section show last night? I laughed so hard they probably heard me down the street!

6:22 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Luv,

What did he say?

6:35 AM
Blogger LuvAU41 said...

He was talking about how difficult it will be for $aban and Co. to keep their team focused with all the hype that's going to be going on for the next month. Mark May said that will NOT be a problem for $aban. Then Herbie said something about last year's Sugar Bowl and the way he said it was hysterical.

6:40 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I missed that. I saw where Saban was on there and immediately chastised them for making Texas/Alabama out to be David vs Goliath and then Herbstreit stepped in and said, it won't just be ESPN, you will have to stop all the media, radio, magazines and everything from doing that.

Off topic, but I need to get some info from the hockey fans of the group.

My son let us know that one of the presents he would like is an authentic Atlanta Thrashers jersey with Nic Antropov's name and number on it. After discovering that this one customized jersey will cost more than the three day trip to Tampa WITH game day tickets, my immediate reaction is no way is that going to happen. Do authentic jersey's really cost that much? Or am I just looking in the wrong place? Thanks for any help or light you can shed on this.

On the local news this morning, they showed bamrs lined up outside of bama fever in the Galleria waiting to buy their SEC Champions gear. UGH.

Tommy,

An authentic jersey for any sport are very expensive. Replica jersies are cheaper, but any jersey is usually pretty expensive.

TommyD: Could you get away with this?

It's $120 or so ... plus $15 or so for lettering.

That's not quite authentic, but it's not fake by any means.

After May claimed Saban would have Bama ready, Herbie said "You mean like he did for the Sugar Bowl last year?

Actually Saban kept pounding the ESPN guys about preparedness and ignoring the media and ended up schoolong them a bit.

I recorded the silly 3 hr affair. I went through the entire show in 45 min. ESPN showed the Saban/Bama interview segment 3 seperate times during the 3 hours. It was the longest individual segment on the show.

The Bama fans can relax their fragile egos now ...their getting their precious "exposure" they so covet.

Hey Hotties. Great to be back for 4 days and then Disney!!!!!

Bama looks good, period. Hope Auburn looks that way in the near future. Texas...what dumb play calling. Yes, the 1 second on the clock was correct, but was Les Miles calling the plays or what?

Really really really want to go to the Outback Bowl, but just don't know if it will be possible.

Blogger mytommyd said...

Yeah I saw that too Mr JGT. I think I was just in sticker shock from the $379 authentic one(before shipping/handling and tax), and was wondering if that's just what the "real" jersey's go for. If that is the case, ummm he's getting the not necessarily authentic one.

We have to win this bowl game to somewhat erase the memory of the last time we played in Tampa.

They could have fired Bowden after that game and I wouldn't have been upset.

So when does bowl practice start?

This Northwestern match up should be entertaining since they also are up tempo. The big difference I see is that their leading rusher averages twenty something a game. They are a pass happy bunch.
