Playing the Star game

Hey everyone. So Rivals.com is in the midst of making its final re-assessments prior to National Signing Day and Auburn has been affected (slightly) by a few of these re-assessments.

OK, so OT Shon Coleman finished his season in November as a four-star prospect. Rivals.com's experts have bumped him to a five-star guy. By all accounts, he played well at the U.S. Army All-American game, so maybe that's why he's "better" now.

Another OT commitment, Ed Christian, today lost one of his stars. He's now a three-star prospect. His season ended in November as well. Christian played in the North/South All-Star game earlier this month. Maybe he was terrible?

Word inside Rivals.com is that LB commitment Jake Holland, he of Pelham fame, has been identified as a "riser" by experts inside the organization and will be bumped from his current perch (three star) to a higher, four-star perch in the coming days.

His season ended in November as well. Maybe he improved dramatically during the Christmas holiday?

EDIT: Rivals.com also is planning to bump DE commit Kenneth Carter to a four-star prospect in the coming days. The organization is making the changes on a position-by-position basis.

The whole deal looks odd to me.

Guys, I wouldn't get too worked up over this. Time and time again it has been shown that stars are meaningless, unless of course the recruit has a lot of stars and is committing to Auburn.

On the Auburn Rivals site, with all the names listed, Ed is still a 4 star, but click his name to get his profile and the he is now a 4 star. The update is to occur overnight on the main Auburn Rivals site. The offense got graded out yesterday, for the final time by Rivals

Jake Holland was given another star and will be added overnight (according to the guys that rate these kids) and the 'system' will update overnight.

It just seems odd to change the ratings like this so late in the game.

Lattimore needs to come to Auburn. I believe it was rivals that said he reminds them most of Ronnie Brown, a pretty good back we had a few years back. Oh wait, he is my favorite back we have ever had. Yea, I want another Ronnie Brown.

When AU was recruiting poorly (compared to other teams) stars meant nothing to MANY AU fans. Surely some will be a bust, but some will not.
I will take a bunch of 4-5 stars and coach them well and believe they can beat your bunch of 3-4 stars that are well coached most of the time.

2:14 PM

Yea, whether it is paper rock scissor or tic-tac-toe, it is always good to beat Bama.

We shall see, wtc, but this is very encouraging. What will really impress me is these guys actually make it to Auburn. What killed some of our classes, like 2007, wasn't the stars. It was guys that never made it to the field. I will put my one star up against your five star any day if neither makes it to the field.

I really don't care who wins the beauty contest, this years recruiting class is great and if they play up to there potential we will be mighty good in a couple of years. We knew the 04 OU team was bad, they allowed 40 pts a couple of times late in the year and won because the other teams' defenses were worse. The network promoted it as the best BCS Championship game match-up yet and they spun the outcome as well this just leaves no doubt.

Thanks Scotto Chocco.

I did actually see that a few weeks ago and laughed heartily.

I also remember reading that Bill Simmons's article shortly after the qualifier in Mexico City. It was epic. Good perspective on the game from someone who is just now latching on to it.

I kind of grew tired of Bill Simmons and its Boston-centric themes, but it's been fun to see him really catch the soccer bug, so to speak. He's hooked and even dedicates some of his BS Report podcasts strictly to talk about soccer.

As an aside, ESPN's coverage of this year's World Cup in South Africa looks like it is going to be absolutely epic.

For the rest of the games, I'll be setting the DVR if I'm at work and watching when I get home. That's what I did for the 2006 World Cup, In 2002, I was still in college and not working that summer, so I was basically just a pod person staying up and getting up early to watch all the games.

It was awesome. Jack Edwards and Ty Keough are still the soundtrack of that summer.

I seem to have a history of conflicts with watching the World Cup even beyond what I mentioned:

1986 - I actually went, but was on vacation in Mexico, so doing lots of other stuff and couldn't watch a lot.
1990 - had planned to go, but ended up in grad school in Arizona instead (the cool thing about that was lots of international students to watch with)
1994 - Again, had planned to go (it was actually in the U.S.), so naturally I got married the day after it started, so was on my honeymoon for first half of it.
1998 - had a two month old baby, a new job, and living in a new city. Nuff said.
2002 - I think I actually got to watch a decent amount, but it was in Asia, so the game times were horrendous.

So, is the thread slow because we're talking about soccer or are we talking about soccer because the thread is slow?

I don't really have a favorite club (I like the national team stuff better), but I do have some fondness for the Bundesliga and La Liga due to travels back in the 80's. I followed Bayern Munchen and Real Madrid a little bit back then.

Soccer is mucho funo to play. But I find it extremely boring to watch. I watched a couple indoor games and that was much more entertaining, and looked pretty fun to do as well.

This is about the time when CH=B usually comes in and says, "You know how I know you're gay?" Good thing I've got my avatar to throw him off.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

It's still more fun to play than to watch, but isn't almost every sport. Indoor is a blast, by the way. I thought I was in shape from playing outdoor soccer until I played a season of that.

Auburn needs to beat LSU tonight... if not the remaining stretch could get ugly.

I actually would rather watch baseball than play it. Other than that your probably right.

Scott...I'm a huge Man United fan, but really I don't have a great affinity for the EPL outside of them.

La Liga is where I get a lot of my club soccer kicks. Serie A is down, but I still watch.

I'm with you on the Bundesliga, too. It's not as strong as the other top leagues, but the games are always entertaining, and I think Bundesliga teams have the best stadiums and fans in the world.

I was in Munich a couple of years ago and stopped by to check out Bayern's Allianz Arena. Easily one of the weirdest exterior designs I've seen on a stadium anywhere, but I dug it.

Okay, I'm on the same page now.

Enough soccer talk.

Time for Auburn-LSU. Nice run we're on right now.

Why is there more exertion in indoor soccer than outdoor?

I have managed to finally convince myself we will get Lattimore? How? If I am Grimes I tell him compare and contrast the players USCe has on the offensive line with what Auburn has. Choose the one that you think will give you the best chance to be successful.

the usc fans over on cocky talk are having a fit, apparently Luper and Malzahn met Lattimore at school today and had an in home visit with his family tonight, anyone know if this is true?

8:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Byron, I have no clue if that is true, but if we get Lattimore after having gotten Mack, lets just say that USCe will have plenty of motivation when we play them. Taking two fo the best players our of their home state is a serious thumping.

apparently it was a scheduled meet. and sc coaches will meet him tomorrow.

These kids can't remember the old ball coach's glory days. He's no longer a draw for recruits and USCe has little else to offer.

Chizik still has his in home visit with Latt as well. He won't use that until sometime late next week, I'm sure. I would advise you get comfortable with the idea of Lattimore in Orange and Blue.

i'm a definite recrewtnik and find all this star stuff hilarious. it is just the sites pandering to the casual fan to feel like he has inside info for $100 a year. i always view it as more of an indicator how quickly they think this guy can be an impact player and the likelihood of that occurring. some guys don't have stars because of grades, off field issues or no one knows about them. dyer may make an immediate impact as a freshman, but maybe he never really improves from good to great. meanwhile, slade becomes an nfl tackle over the next four years and not too many were interested early when he committed.

that said, i see AU is going to sign some immediate impact players with a high likelihood of impacting.

Hotties,

Please include "Patricia" and her family in your prayers. They are very dear friends and Patricia was just diagnosed with multicentric glioblastoma (same type of brain tumor as Ted Kennedy, but in multiple locations in the brain). Life expectancy is just a few months. Thanks for your prayers!

Did anyone see that Rivals reclassifed Trovon Reed from WR to ATH. The other day Ambles was a five star, but ranked as the 7th best reciever. Reed was the 5th ranked WR but only a four star. WTH????

Also, that stupid number on rivals is a joke. Ed Christian is now a 5.7 3 star prospect. If he was 5.8 he would be a four star. So that .1 difference is a full star, WTH!!!

It doesn't matter about star rankings. Don't get me wrong, you need high ceiling guys, but if you get guys who can get in school, have ability and are coachable, you are going to win games.

Auburn is going to win alot of games.

7:24 AM
Blogger stupup74 said...

Also, what about some Auburn men's basketball road win substance people!

I have a feeling Auburn is going to go on a little run in basketball.

7:26 AM
Blogger stupup74 said...

One other thing, how much of a differnce is there really between a guy who is 5.7 three star vs. a 5.8 four star? Really, honestly, are we splitting hairs?

Now, there is probably some difference in a 5.7 three star and a 6.1 5-star. Great news is we have both.
