Barbee's letter of agreement with Auburn
Hey everyone. I don't think this one needs much introduction:
March 24, 2010
Dear Coach Barbee,
On behalf of Auburn University, I congratulate you on becoming our head
mens basketball coach. This letter is a summary of the agreement we
have reached. Auburn has offered the position of head mens basketball
coach to you, and you have accepted. The basic terms of our agreement
are set forth below, and it is understood that this letter does not
contain all of the terms of the agreement. You and Auburn will enter
into a separate written contract setting forth the entirety of our
agreement as soon as practical.
The basic terms of our agreement are:
1. You will become the head mens basketball coach effective today.
2. You will be paid $1.5 million annually, consisting of a base salary
($225,000) and payments for assignment of your endorsement, radio,
television and internet rights, fundraising and personal appearances
($1,275,000). The term of the agreement will be six years.
3. You will receive two dealer cars through our dealer car program or
two car allowances each equal to five percent of your base salary.
4. In addition to the annual income of $1.5 million, you will be
eligible for academic and performance bonuses on an annual basis.
5. You will be responsible for assembling a coaching staff subject to
approval by Auburn.
6. You will be responsible for operating the mens basketball program in
accordance with Auburn, SEC and NCAA rules and bylaws and within the
budget established by Auburn. One of our primary goals is to have our
student-athletes graduate with an undergraduate degree, and you will
support our student-athletes in their efforts.
7. We will work together in a timely and cooperative manner to agree
upon the remaining terms set forth in the contract to be executed.
8. The terms of the agreement are contingent upon a review of your
background information, NCAA, etc.
I look forward to our future successes together. Welcome to the Auburn
family. God Bless and War Eagle!
Sincerely,
Jay Jacobs
Athletics Director

DOUBLE FIRSTS!
War Eagle.
this is getting too easy or i'm the only one working right now.
Oh, G-d Bless, too.
Jay Jacobs writes a nice letter. Not too nice, not too mean.

Good morning hotties.
I just woke up so I say its still morning.
UNO?
Easy substance!!!! Where's DL?
War Eagle!!!
Biggest accomplishment of my week.
Heading to Disney World right now....
The real Cam Newton video (maybe):
No booger eating?
Uno?
I'd love a letter like that. Mine currently says something along the lines of "we'll tell you what you're gonna do when we figure it out, and we won't pay you anywhere near 1.5MM or buy you any cars".
Nice expectation setting.
War Eagle!
It's a sign of the times and admirable that JJ sets S-A academic goals in the employment letter.
This game is RIGGED!!! I was first for a good five minutes before the cheater appeared. Dirty pool
What???? I was first for a while there. This internet thing is weird.
Hey I posted first ... I saw it ...I swear ...this deal is rigged ...I want my money back.
Ha, blogger tricked like 10 people into being first. Nice!
I'm working, Scottie. Someone had control of my screen though which I was NOT expecting to happen. Luckily, I didn't have anything too embarrassing pulled up.
That was weird, my post showed up at first on my screen. Then when I refreshed, it moved to 8.
What's up with the commentz?
PFOMG, I still don't see the article that you link which Meyer was complaining about. Could you re-link it.
This is the first thread I can recall where seven or eight people thought they were first.
so i'm a cheater now?
aaahhh, i must have my mo-jo back!
OK, that was weird....
Ahhhh...all of the comments keep re-arranging themselves. It's freaking me out.
We're all just rodents in JayG's maze, apparently.
If this keeps up, it's going to be tough for someone to nail the "BEASLEY!" post.
Scottie, you are number 1 according to my list.
Yea, it appears we had about half a dozen first posts, although all the really counts is none of them were that evil first post by FSJ yesterday.
I smell Russians.
Steve,
I've known for a while that you have a reading comprehension problem caused mainly by not paying attention, but you're driving me crazy.
Look at my 7:54 AM post here.
thanks Kristina. all you need to know is scottie is #1.
Hoopie,
Yes, I agree. They're all UF fans. I still like it better there than here. There are lots of upsides.
This scary/good report from Bitter:
Malzahn on wide receivers Terrell Zachery and Darvin Adams: "Both those guys are light years ahead of where they were last year."
Hard to imagine, particularly w/Adams.
I saw that and thought the same thing Comm'r. That's exciting.
PFOMG, I am sorry that I have caused you to have another little tantrum, but there is no 7:54 post there.
Also, there is a difference between an article that Meyer was complaining about and an article about Meyer complaining. Now, I can see where you have trouble understanding that, so I will elaborate.
An article about Meyer complaining would occur after whatever he was complaining about. It could not occur before, because, obviously, what he was complaining about had not happened yet.
So, what I asked for was a link to what Meyer was complaining about. Not a link to the story about Meyer complaining.
I am deeply sorry that this has caused you so much stress. Talk to mommy. Maybe she will make it better for you.
SC, The non-booger eatin' Cam video from Bitter was impressive.
That kid is reasonably well grounded considering all the hype thrown on him. He has a lot of confidence and tries to temper it with humility.
Thanks for the Cam Newton video ScottChoc! Without the boogers.
Steve, not sure what you are seeing, but I'm not having any problems following PF.
Steve,
Chill.
Your pal,
j-z
Chill? I apologized. I asked a question and caused PFOMG to have a tantrum, which I regret.
HAHAHA
PFOMG, I am sorry that I have caused you to have another little tantrum, but there is no 7:54 post there.
That's no apology, Shirley.
Try again. It's there, linked properly, and exactly what you're describing in your self-demeaning diatribe.
Steve, link to story that made Urban Meyer complain:
Story
PF, you might want to check it out, too.
What?!?!? Where'd you other 48 posters come from?
Thanks Scott C, although that is not what I am looking for, it is hilarious.
1st!!! Woo Hoo!!!
Heading out for a late dinner. Can't wait to get home and eat supper at a normal time, i.e. 6.
Not to hijack a thread, but has anyone seen or heard the story about the reporter from the Orlando Sentinel and Urban Meyer?
Sorry if it has already been posted/discussed...I haven't been around much lately.
linky
JGT, any thoughts from a fellow reporter/blogger?
wow. talk about being a day late and a dollar short...the story of my life.
please disregard my worthless post.
Thanks PFOMG. I found that article. I am not sure why I didn't see it previously.
Meyer's reaction seems a bit over the top because that doesn't seem like a lot of twisting of words, although I think the kid worded things poorly.
The kid was not likely intending to knock Tebow. He probably should have said things got would get better for him. But it does seem Meyer overreacted.
Steve,
Sorry, couldn't resist, but...PF's post is right where he said it was and it is the article you were asking for.
What's all this I hear about sax and violins on tv?
Miller,
Where'd you read this?
AU's new bball coach, Barbee, can be seen on CBS's sports coverage of the NCAA tourney as analyst this weekend
Wes, thanks for the other story. It does appear Meyer overreacted a bit, but that reporter probably shouldn't have run that quote because the story was a bit misleading. The kid was likely not intending to knock Tebow, but it is easy to read it that way.
this just in "we landed on the mooon!"
Hey...Did y'all hear anything about Urban Meyer? Apparently there is something going on with him complaining about something...
(Sorry. Couldn't resist)
The reporter should not have run the quote? Seriously?
The article wasn't even remotely about Tebow. He was mentioned because the quote was what the player said, and was relevant to the article. The reporter didn't do anything to dwell on the Tebow part. Anyone with a brain knows what the kid was saying.
Shouldn't have run the quote? Amazing. Just amazing.
If anyone is to blame, it's Urban for giving the reporters a player who can't properly articulate his intentions.
Really..something going on with Urban?
Did he quit again?
Peter,
Apparently the reporter should have just ignored the quote....I don't know maybe trashed it instead of reporting it.
PFOMG, I am sorry to hear you don't have a brain, but running the story that way was probably a bad idea. It could easily be read more than one way.
The kid just worded things poorly and the reporter should have realized that.
Meyer did overreact, because this is nothing in comparison to what Gundy was addressing. Meyer wasn't as vocal, but he was just as nasty.
Urban overreacted in a big way, but then, that's a pattern with him, isn't it?
I wish I had a brain. Then I might not care about things like free press, accurate reporting, and reading.
The reporter is suppose to report news. If something is misleading, I would say either not report it or make it clear what the kid meant.
For instance, when the kid says things will get better, he is likely referring to things with regard to him, rather than with the team. His context was likely his performance, not the teams overall performance.
That being said, Meyer definitely overreacted. Yes, the article can be a bit misleading. That is one of the flaws of the English language. It can be misinterpreted.
A good reporter is skilled with the English language and gets across points in a less ambiguous manner. You can't expect college kids to have the same skill with language.
Meyer is a jerk face moron.
Like the new avatar, PF.
Meyer will quit again in a year or two...
Some folks NEVER give up...and then there is Urban.
Hahahaha, now Wake obviously has language skills.
I'm gonna go so far as to say he is a poopie head.
I don't respect any coach that was blown out by Mike Shula...
Just sayin....
at least Barbee doesn't need to buy any new colored neck ties
First!
First Again !!!
PF,
Did you find the answer to the question you asked of me earlier?
Barbee will serve as an analyst for CBS College Sports Network coverage of the NCAA Tourney Regionals this weekend.
It is being reported pretty much everywhere now.
Can be nothing but good press for AU. The timing of his hiring coinciding with this appearance will undoubtedly lead to him being asked about the AU job. He'll have an instant platform to sell the AU program to a national TV audience.
The comments were weird for me earlier, too, so I decided to eat some tilapia and let The Computer Gods sort it out.
Now they have. All is well.
Wes: I read the story about Meyer and ... I don't really have a strong opinion about it. Hugh Nall and I have held screaming matches that went beyond anything seen in my family, but that's just how it goes. Kids sometimes say things that coaches don't like. The reporter typically becomes the fall guy.
My initial thought is that, yes, the reporter made a minor error in judgment with the quote and framed it improperly.
I totally disagree with the incident being "reported" -- complete with a friggin' photo -- like it's something newsworty. This stuff is between the coach, the writers and the SID. Doesn't belong out here.
I think that, if Urban thought that the player's meaning had been misconstrued, he should have explained it to the reporter, told him the kid was embarassed by it, and asked him to do a follow-up piece that clarified it. Going Robert de Niro on the reporter is not the way I would have handled it.
I'm glad our coaches seem to be level-headed men and women.
There you have it "The sports writer" spoke and now we can go back to talking about Auburn.
There exists a symbiotic relationship between writers, coaches and SIDs. There are things you do and things you don't do.
Coaches have a right to do stuff like this (privately) and I expect to get this stuff occasionally.
I just can't stress this enough: No legitimate news organization would "report" on something like this. It's a joke. This is not news. It's not even gossip. It's just ... behind-the-scenes stuff that happens all over.
or Brett Favre
BEASLEY
But when Meyer did it in front of a bunch of other reporters, doesn't that fall in the same category as a player talking in an interview as far as reportability? Meyer made the thing news by the manner he yelled at the guy.
Meyer handled it badly. I do feel for the Florida player, though, because you can tell that he wasn't meaning to bash Tebow. The reporters should have had him further clarify his statement.
Are college kids running around chasing a guy with a pointy brown ball really news? What is "news"? Urban Meyer is a public figure, so him getting angry, for better or worse, would be classified by many as news. There is obviously a demand for it.
Dangit, I got all philosophical and killed the blog. People are probably questioning who they are and why they are here and who killed JR and all that. Whoops.
i got angry at a customer a few weeks ago. i have yet to see it on the evening news. bummer.
I agree Michael. The reporter and Meyer made mistakes here. Actually, the way Meyer handled it probably made things worse for the player since he made it into a bigger story.
Talking to the reporter privately, explaining what bothered him, and getting the reporter to maybe provide a follow up to clarify things would have been much better.
And I wouldn't put this in the Mike Gundy category. In that case the reporter was speculating to create news. I was glad Gundy tore him a new one.
'He' was actually a she, Steve, let's make sure to use inclusive language here.
The last shall be first, and the last ... symbiotic tilapia.
As the King of Eurasia, Queen of HABOTN, and Master of Thighs, I know life in the public eye all too well. That is why I run the newspapers in Eurasia. It is the prudent thing to do. However, I still unfortunately publish all the dirt about myself, even rumors that aren't true. I can't help it, it sells papers. Believe me, I am sick of denying my own accusations in the seedy press that I run, but I just don't know a better way.
On the lighter side, here is an amazing tweet.
More than $100,000 spills from back of armored car in Columbus, Ohio; passers-by scoop up most of it
The story is here.
Man, you think you had a bad day at work. That armored car driver would disagree.
digger,
I don't know if you'll be on soon or not but wanted to let you know that my team is signed up to do the BBQ contest at the Falls on 4/9 & 4/10.
If you are up that way on those dates come by.
Steve, you have officially ground the smallest remnant newsworthiness out of the Meyer story down into quarks.
Congratulations. This is a stunning achievement to both journalists and physicists, roughly equivalent to achieving cold fusion and the Pulitzer prize in one afternoon.
I am bummed about WVU's point guard breaking his foot. I had them going to the championship game.
Dang, NCAA tournament talk kills the thread? I guess I should bring up that rumor about Urban Meyer going to BC.
WHHHAAAT????!!!! another BC coaching search? sweet. tell me more!
GO CATS tonite!
Scottie B. - what's the story on The Governator's UAB shirt?
SC: Tubby Smith is going to BC. It's a done deal!
I heard Hugh Nall has accepted a position as the head womens soccer coach at BC.
SteveFC to become SteveBC.
Jay G,
What's it matter if it's actually news or not? You know those lines are blurry nowadays anyway. With newspaper guys being bloggers and video producers, what is actually being reported as news and what it just entertainment is a line most of you walk (and that's just sports guys- this type of behavior goes way deeper elsewhere). You yourself blogged as recently as the last season about a beat writer dispute. Were you reporting news, or just sharing something juicy that you knew your viewers would get a kick out of?
All I know is that this was juicy, and people love it. Otherwise, we wouldn't be talking about it.
You mean Hugh Nall THE best OL coach in NCAA history?? The one who yells at reporters and gets away with it??!!
How 'bout a little fire, Scarecrow?
PF: Are you trying to out quark Steve from Lubbock??
No, I'm talking on a much more philosophical level in response to Jay's statement. I pretty let the actual story go when I got tired of laughing at Steve.

Thursday puppet hour in 30 minutes. Get ready quitstina.
Michael, did you know that your comment means the same thing in French?
Michael is joking
(This was just a practice post. I'm out of shape.)
Hey, I'm on yet another con-call with the California peeps and someone on it mentioned a set-to involving Coarch Urban Mayer and a reporter. You folks hear anything about that?
Michael is joking.
Michael is JOKING.
Michael is joking.
Michael is joking.
ScottChoc, the UAB shirt is from Arnold's 'Pumping Iron' days. i love me some 70's Arnold. dude was a beast in his day. plus, i've been hitting the gym a lot lately so it seemed appropriate. i have no idea as to why he would wear a UAB shirt, but it's cool.
I'm scared of puppets.
I am a puppet
My boss is the puppet master
I pretty let the actual story go when I got tired of laughing at Steve.
Kiddie, grow up.
ha.
Yea, I understand.
Sometimes I'm easily amused. Today is one of those days.
sometimes this is like elementary school all over again. yall crack me up.
Yea, we seem to have more than ten minutes of al.com in here recently.
I don't think we're quite to al.com levels, but let's make sure we don't aspire to either.
It's all my fault.
It is bound to happen, to some degree. This place has far less of it than most.
btw, Puppets....Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhggg.
got 6?
just practicing
Man - it's been so long since I've done that al blog that I've forgotten many of those classic lines. I think I'm ok with that, too.
AAAHHHHH!!!!!!
Is it sunny where you are?
Why does this quote of Barbee seem terribly familiar?
“I love it here and my family loves it here. My intention is to be the head coach at UTEP for as long as they’ll have me,” says Barbee."
It is rainy where I am. I think. Not sure, I am pretty far from the nearest window.
Barbee's just using Auburn to get to UMass. He'll be gone in a couple of years.
Will Jay be live blogging from the press conference?
Well, if UMass gives him a 400% raise, I would suspect so.
From the articles I have read, he does sound like a good guy, although he is apparently into nice suites, which is something I am not much into.
Nice Suites? Like the Real World Suite at the Palms in Vegas. Yeah, I'm into that, too.
I also like Ermenegildo Zegna.
Where is the connection between nice guy and nice suites, anyway?
First! At least in the Mountain Time Zone.
A haiku:
Deonte said it.
Beat hack quoted him fairly.
Urban is a tool.
I am into nice suites I just don't have the money to buy them.
I never picture people that like nice suits as personable, although from what I have read, Barbee seems to be and seem to encourage fans to talk with him if they run into him.
I am also curious about some of the NCAA troubles that Calipari got into when Barbee was around, but I see nothing that would indicate he suspected of wrong doing.
Run a clean program has to be a top priority. I am sure Jacobs talked with him about it and it was mentioned in the letter on this blog.
Clutch performance, Scottie B! Thanks!!!
Getting home from dinner at 11 pm is just plain wrong.
