Lee Ziemba speaks out

Hey everyone. Offensive tackle Lee Ziemba stopped by for a chat moments ago. The interview took a turn for the terse when I asked about his penchant for penalties. His answers are blunt, revealing and important.

  • On his problem with penalties in 2009: ``I didn't think they were as bad as everybody makes it seem. Watch an NFL game. How many false starts do you see? Yeah, I messed up a few times. There's a lot of factors. It's a tough thing, but we're trying to get it fixed and corrected so it doesn't happen again. It's the game of football. It's a lot tougher than people think it is. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination."

  • On if the penalty situation is overstated: ``Heck yeah. I hear it going to have supper with my girlfriend. Somebody stops me. It's ridiculous. Whatever. You get in this position, you're going to hear stuff like that. We're trying to get it fixed. I'm always trying to improve. I come here every day and work my tail end off to try and improve myself. That's my job."

  • On if he feels underappreciated: ``I'm not doing it for appreciation. I'm doing it because I love playing football and I love Auburn University. I'm not doing it for anything other than that. I don't feel underappreciated. I feel good. I love being here. I wouldn't change anything about it. Yeah, I need to work on penalties. I have to work on a lot of different aspects of my game that people don't mention. It's not like I'm trying to mess up."

Lee has definitely had too many of those penalties ....and IMO ...some AU folks have had too much fun criticizing him for it.

I remember correctly, I barely commented on this back when Aero was so angry because I felt surely that AU folks would get over it and didn't want to stir him more by agreeing. I suppose if some AU folks consider piling on their team to be entertainment, then the cheap shots will probably continue.

For the most part,I'll try to limit my "piling on" for Bammer.

One quick statement, though, JGT was not one of those people I was refering too, or legitimate reporters for that matter. They have a job to do and that is to report the story.

Unfortunately if you keep jumping offsides in tight games, you become part of the story line, whether you like it or not.

People in this world think just because they know your name, they know YOU. Fans need to leave the big guy alone in social settings and class, etc, and let him do his thing on Saturdays.

Looks like Spurrier is putting a lot of pressure on Garcia. Spurrrier is giving equal time to a true freshman this spring. Here's an excerpt:

“If we’re going to win big here, the quarterback’s got to play well,” Spurrier said. “He’s got to really play well. He can’t play like Stephen did last year. We can’t take sacks all over the place, first-down sacks, and some of those careless interceptions.

“He just has to play well and maybe we haven’t coached Stephen very well, but he plays undisciplined. We’re trying to get him to play disciplined.”

There seems to be a misconception about Ziemba. He didn't have nearly so many penalties last season, particularly in the second half of the season.

Yes, he did have issues in 2008 when we had the Ethiopian offensive line philosophy.

10:53 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I agree, it's pretty low to bother the guy when he is out in public eating or something like that...but cracking a joke that he has had a lot of penalties called against him isn't a cheap shot.

Maybe because I'm guilty of "piling on" I don't see where this is a big deal. It's not like we are making up or talking about stuff that didn't happen.

This is from Chris Low regarding $aban and the $aban Rule.

It’s the reason he’s still peeved over not being able to go out in the spring and recruit. The NCAA’s rule prohibiting head coaches from recruiting off campus during the spring evaluation period has been dubbed the “Saban Rule.”

Before the rule was implemented, nobody pounded the pavement in the spring like Saban.

“I enjoy getting out and meeting the players and seeing the players as much as I do anything in what we do as coaches,” Saban said.

If I'm connecting the dots correctly, Saban pretty much admits that he was "getting out" in the spring so he could meet the players ....WHICH WASN'T ALLOWED ...THUS THE $ABAN RULE. So is he indirectly admitting wrong intentions?

I don't really believe in the just joking excuse. The problem I have with this is that if jokes are told long enough, people confuse them with truth.

Ziemba is a very good player that will get to play on Sunday. He has contributed a lot to Auburn and deserves our respect. It is good to see him not jump to the NFL.

Hoopie, don't underestimate the value of beating a topic to death.

Anyone want to talk about who might be the starting QB?

Also, I do think there are some things it is fair to criticize a player for. Eric Smith punching the guy in the head is one of them. I do hope it is obvious that that is illegal and people that do it should go to jail. Of course, I am a positive person and don't think of that as punishment. I just think of it as someone finding where they belong in the world.

Other examples include players talking about what they are going to do but never doing anything, ala Greg Smith. Don't let your mouth overload your butt.

Another example would be a player selling drugs on campus. That would be fair game for criticism in my book.

I just don't believe in bashing players that are trying hard, but make mistakes. Guys like Cox, Todd, and Burns are all good examples. Yea, I can think of mistakes all of them made, but I view them as good Auburn men.

I'm going to put myself out there and say that Ziemba is often maligned because of his '08 year. If I couldn't eat dinner with my girlfriend because I was being berated with football comments, it would become extremely frustrating.

I think McCain's penalties last year were often mistaken for Ziemba. People see an end move, they think 2008, and there we go. I know a lot of my friends did that at the games we were at.

I parallel it to Mario's "fumble problem." He lost the ball on two kick offs in 2007, then a kick off against Arky last year, but how many times has he fumbled the ball from the backfield? The stats I saw read none. Yet everyone always recants the South Florida game and thinks Mario Fumble Fannin.

Today's probable rain stoppage in 2 hours should help TW. It'll slow the greens for him to finish round 1 on tomorrow am. 27 holes on Friday may take it's toll.

I don't care how he does in the tourney. ESPN is already obsessing about TW. I won't watch the Masters this year if they keep incessantly talking about him. Those hallowed grounds are a lot more important than TW and the media needs to show the entire event and players, not just a TW diary. I'm hoping that ol' Billy keeps CBS reeled in.

Blogger stupup74 said...

Simply put, the Tigers need to be more disciplined this year. Fannin has to take better care of the ball. The false starts and offsides have to stop. The tackling must improve.

EVERYONE must Catch the ball, hang onto the ball, tackle, and avoid penalties. That will lead to more victories.

1:11 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I watched golf before TW came onto the tour, I've watched while he's been on a break, and I'll watch whenever he hangs it up for good. It's The Masters for crying out loud, you're danged skippy I'm going to be watching. I don't support his behavior or the incessant coverage his return has generated but there's simply no denying his ability. I can absolutely appreciate him for that.

I agree with earlier comments; if rain interrupts his round today, he should have an excellent morning to fire at the pin tomorrow, and if he's on the first page of the leaderboard on Sunday then everyone else sit back and watch a terrific display.

I have a question to all the runners on the blog:

I have been on a diet and have lost about 30 lbs. One of the keys to this has been me getting on the treadmill 5-6 times a week for 20-30 minutes (2.5ish miles), but recently I have had a devil of a time with lower leg and knee pain.

I run in new balance 993 and have some insoles in them.

Do you guys know any tricks, etc?

1:18 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I have a suggestion...stop running. Just kidding it's that you have lost 30lbs.

1:28 PM
Blogger Norm said...

stupup - tip 1, get off the treadmill, tip 2, start taking "Move Free" (or anything similar), tip 3, go to a specialty running store and be evaluated for shoes by someone who knows what they're doing.

As to "1", I've found the treadmills to be very hard on my shins and knees so I avoid treadmills at every opportunity.

As to "2", it's a supplement you can pick up just about anywhere (I get mine at the local Kroger in their pharmacy section). My knees used to kill me whether I was treadmill or outdoors running. After taking this, I've had no trouble to speak of from my knees. I've referred a couple of other running friends to it and they report similar results.

As to "3" you may spend more $ on shoes but it's absolutely worth it. When I first got started, I ran in whatever shoes I already owned. Once I got to the point of running 15 or so miles a week, I invested in quality shoes recommended by my local "Fleet Feet" store and I've never looked back. In my case, the shoes I get from them are pretty comparably priced to what I've seen online for the same shoe but I stay with that store because I like the personal touch.

"3" is probably the most important. You're investing in your feet, ankles, knees and lower back. I've bought and run through the usefulness of several pair of Mizuno Wave shoes and currently have a pair of Brooks. I found the Brooks to be extremely comparable to the Mizuno's but I think I went with the Brooks this time because they might have felt a bit lighter. Bottom line; see a professional, not the kid who works part time at Sports Authority.

Take all that for what you want and I hope some of it's helpful.

As a fan of golf, I can't begin to adequately explain what happened today at Augusta.

The leader is a guy who's won three tournaments in a row -- on the Senior tour. Yet, he shot 66.

One of the five tied for second is a guy who's won the tournament twice. He's won eight majors total ... oh, he's 60 years old.

The greatest golfer ever to play the game, who has been in exile for months, shoots his best first-round score on that course and he's just two shots off the lead.

The top 11 have combined for more than two dozen major victories. Three of the top 11 are legitimate candidates to be declared the best current player without a major (Choi, Kim and Poulter).

Six of the top 16 (Couples, Watson, Mickelson, Woods, Immelman and Lyle) have won the tournament before.

Before you say the course was playing too easy ... tell that to the likes of Cink, Glover, Singh and Furyk. They were a combined 20 over par.

This is too cool.

The coverage today was shameful.

Tiger lining up a putt.
Tiger setting up for drive.
Tiger writing on his scorecard.
Tiger walking to the next hole.

I understand that ESPN has to air what pays. It just pisses me off that I can't watch the friggin' Masters.

CBS won't be much better and I agree I want to see the other golfers play. I don't care about the life and loves of Tiger Woods. Nor his stroll around the Augusta country club.
It is great to see all of these older guys play well. And the other highly regarded players up close to the top.

Hi Hotties,

Think about me tomorrow. I am driving a 15 passenger van with 13 ladies in their mid-60s and up to Eufaula to tour some antebellum homes and gardens.

I once drove 14 teenagers from Cincinnati to Atlanta, so I figure this can't be too bad! We are stopping at the condo in Auburn where Tylerson will have coffee and muffins prepared.

I'm hoping for an uneventful day!

9:01 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I was going to say that sounds like an awful day until muffins were mentioned...and I realized that that age group usually thinks I'm cuter than I really am. It sounds okay. Van rides and Home & Garden aren't my things.

Tidbits I found interesting:

The kid AU released today says Lebo called and had room for him. He is taking a visit shortly.

UT Qb N. Stephens left the team today and is transferring out. Leaves them with 2 and one of them is a freshman.

I will not be at the rodeo Saturday. I know some folks who will.

9:48 PM
Blogger wtc said...

AU has had A LOT of visitors over the past week to tour the campus. A top notch DE, that I thought was lock to UAt, says his mom committed to AU when they were here this week. AU moved way up the list that day.

He will get heated up later on, but I am so glad this crew has taken no time off from recruiting. I think we get 2 commits after the A day game.

Jack's only the greatest golfer ever for the next however long it takes Tiger to win five more majors. It's already a foregone conclusion. This will just make it official.

Just in case the horse hasn't been beaten to death yet. Don't care for Tiger much as a person after what he did, but I've never been one to idealize athletes. I admire them for what they do on the field of play, not off of it.

It's good to see him and the game of golf back to something like normality. Shaping up to be a great Masters, regardless of how Tiger is performing.

I've even tried it with 2 different Firefox pdf plugins to no avail. Yes, it works fine in Safari, but I want it to work in Firefox just because it should.

Blogger Unknown said...

Curious, THT. Currently I have it configured to load an app. In the past I have had it where the PDF showed up in firefox. I am running Fedora 12 Linux, so it may be a platform issue, although I wouldn't think so. You are on a Mac, correct? Firefox should be similar there since it is also unix based.

1:16 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am using Firefox 3.5.9, not 3.6. I do know that there are some issues with 3.6, including one which is causing an issue in a product I am developing.

I also see a page that says PDF download isn't working in Chrome on Fedora, which seem ironic.

Are you using the Adobe Reader plugin for Firefox? In the past there has been several ways to do this, but I don't see the plugin I use to use at the moment.

Steve,

Over the years there are plenty of people who started every game they played in.

Off the top of my head I can come up with...

Marcus McNeill
Stan White
Kendall Simmons
Takeo Spikes

It's rare, but it does happen. It's just takes a player who is ready to play as a freshman.

6:09 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

you can add Sullivan and BEASLEY!!! to that list.

I'm curious, did Bo start his first game as a true freshman?

Morning Hotties - I can't tell you how glad I am that today's Friday. Oh sure you thing YOU'RE glad it's Friday, well I have you beat.

Cincy I bet you'll have fun. For that type of thing, Eufaula isn't a bad place to be at all. I recently sort of accidentally discovered old Newnan, GA which looks like it had some very nice older homes. So maybe you'd be interested in looking there with those old women you tote around.

6:25 AM

THT,

I'm pretty sure that Bo started every game of his career too.

Rudi Johnson did as well, but it was just one year.

Good morning hotties. It is Friday, looking back on what I have learned this week, I learned I am jealous of jhag going being 18 and going to Auburn this week, cincy is awesome for helping out old ladies, the braves have no offense, norm is a running master, and as always it is great to be an Auburn tiger.

I also forgot my lunch this morning. That on top of the fact I take braves baseball entirely too seriously means this is not adding up to a great start to a Friday.

7:11 AM
Blogger Jet said...

His first game ... he was in the backfield of Lionel James, Ron O'Neal and Randy Campbell. By the end of his freshman year, the late Gregg Pratt was playing more at fullback.

Bo started every game in 1982-83. Got injured in the second game of the 1984 season and was replaced in the starting lineup by Kyle Collins for, I think, four games.

7:21 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Are we talking starting every game he played in or starting every game since he got to AU as a freshman. Ziemba falls in the 2nd category. Not many have started every game their freshman year and then never had to sit out.

I thought I read where Will Herring was the last to do that. But that could have been played the most games.

Multi-platform testing is essential to success. I have a close friend that writes scripts for a living. He makes me laugh by broadcasting that he's going to embark on IE6 testing. I know that's the point where he has everything all done, tested on every other possible configuration. That can either mean the end, or just the beginning, depending on how IE6 responds. His anticipation going into that phase of testing cracks me up.

With respect Hot Ones, I don't think Bo started his first game. From memory, it was against Wake Forest at our place for night game. I think he came in on our second offensive possession in the 1st quarter. 10 yards on his first Auburn carry.
