Lee Ziemba speaks out
Hey everyone. Offensive tackle Lee Ziemba stopped by for a chat moments ago. The interview took a turn for the terse when I asked about his penchant for penalties. His answers are blunt, revealing and important.
- On his problem with penalties in 2009: ``I didn't think they were as bad as everybody makes it seem. Watch an NFL game. How many false starts do you see? Yeah, I messed up a few times. There's a lot of factors. It's a tough thing, but we're trying to get it fixed and corrected so it doesn't happen again. It's the game of football. It's a lot tougher than people think it is. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination."
- On if the penalty situation is overstated: ``Heck yeah. I hear it going to have supper with my girlfriend. Somebody stops me. It's ridiculous. Whatever. You get in this position, you're going to hear stuff like that. We're trying to get it fixed. I'm always trying to improve. I come here every day and work my tail end off to try and improve myself. That's my job."
- On if he feels underappreciated: ``I'm not doing it for appreciation. I'm doing it because I love playing football and I love Auburn University. I'm not doing it for anything other than that. I don't feel underappreciated. I feel good. I love being here. I wouldn't change anything about it. Yeah, I need to work on penalties. I have to work on a lot of different aspects of my game that people don't mention. It's not like I'm trying to mess up."

That's two in a row people. Relish the new page smell people.
Morning, peops.
Practice is underway, but it's not open. I'll provide the usual, comprehensive update afterward.
See you then!
I am on the radio this morning in Jackson. Got up a bit to late to get that on the blog. Oops.
It's like groundhog day.
Tiki Barber doesn't move me.
Tiger is ... trodden.
I'll see what I can do.
Guys, if you want to live the good life, and more importantly, have a chandelier in the dining room, check out the Reserve of Jackson.
I hear the reserve of Jackson is in a "perstergious" locaton.
No, it's because nobody cares. We're over it.
Hope this Masters stays close and interesting. With Tigers great start it could get ugly early. We shall see.
You heard it here first:
We'll be without Jay G for three consecutive weeks this summer. Think the thread will get to 10,000 comments?
vacation or furlough?
The Plainsman guy?
This comment has been removed by the author.
I'm trying to string together three weeks of vacation during the World Cup so I can watch every match.
I only missed one in 2006 ... and that's because I was in surgery. It was Japan-Australia, though I was back home in time for the second game.
THT,
I also was at the "people of the corn" game in 1982. I wasn't really that interested in football and didn't know who Bo was. There was a lady sitting behind me who had on a button that said "My son is number 34." I quickly realized the "Go, Bo" signs were about her son.
That is probably when my increased interest in Auburn football began. I treasure that memory.
I'll be watching every minute of every game. Just won't be doing it live.
I'm a contractor, I don't have any PTO. I will be taking off, however, when the USMNT is playing during the weekdays, which will be their last two group games and hopefully one or two knockout round matches.
There's a place in the world for the angry young man.
I wonder how many pages I could flip if the thread got to 10,000 comments?
As you should, Ephemeral, that is an awesome story.
Stupup - however many Norm would allow
THT is as usual correct.
An excellent choice good sir. I have most but probably not all of his studio albums.
Summer Highland Falls is one of the finest songs ever written.
ehyou - I have the entire collection and have seen him at least 6 times.
I wish I had seen a Warren Zevon concert
I've got everything pre-Storm Front. I was disappointed and figured it wouldn't be getting better.
any hotties headed to au for some baseball this weekend?
Jay G,
Did you see where Rush is on tour and they are doing the entire "Moving Pictures" album in the show?
http://www.rush.com/
Taking a page from Fearless, any Hotties planning to attend the Chizik /AU Roadshow in Atlanta on the 20th?
I may be headed to Richmond for a map talk. No baseball in my weekend plans. But I'll be keeping up with the PENGUINS!
Anybody going to the Lookouts game on Saturday in the Noog?
I saw that yesterday, WERK. Disappointed that there are no concerts scheduled within 300+ miles of here.
Norm- I'm semi-planning to attend. Friends aren't going, so I'm hesitant.
also in a baseball note, i saw justin bryant on campus this morning with a cast on the left hand.
btw, the D.C. concert doesn't count because it's on the day of the Clempson @ AU football game. So, that concert will be about 770 miles from me.
I may have to do this on my own.
do what?
it's time for..
BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!
Beasley was 440?
Oh, 5 x, I got it.
my stomach tells me that it's also time for lunch
E-Bro,
I might be going to the Looks game tomorrow. I haven't decided yet.
I will not be in the Noog tonight, but will be attending a Southern League game - Barons vs. Carolina Mudcats. I think it's going to be a bit chillier weather for baseball than I like.

1st!!!!
blogger is acting bonkers again. thought by chance it might insert this at the head of the thread.
Yeah, tonight will be a little chilly and I'm not going, but tomorrow should be pretty nice for first pitch at 7:15.
Norm, Ms Hoopie and I have tentative plans to go on the 20th, but some work issues keep getting in the way. Got a county commission meeting to attend that may run too long and won't know how long until the 19th. Would love to meet some Hotties if we're going.
We normally do the small AU club out of Rome and haven't seen the folks at the Atl club for years. Should be interesting, hope we can do it.
Hey E-Bro,
When did the Lookouts change their affiliation from the Reds to the Dodgers? I went to the SL All-Star Game last year and that was the first time I realized they had changed. The Mudcats are now the Reds' AA affiliate.
THT ..you are a lucky man to be able to eat like you do and remain healthy.
I'm out to go eat a salad.
in the interest of full disclosure - I ate a salad for lunch yesterday. There was nothing else edible in the cafeteria at work.
I don't see salad anywhere on today's menus.
there's a package of "baby arugula" in the fridge. I tossed it to the very back of the shelf.
found a serving of Cincy's french toast casserole hiding under something unedible. MrsTHT made it on Sunday for her coworkers. Is it still good? I guess we'll know by midafternoon ;-)
Count Chocula...That happened last year. Threw me for a loop as well.
Still doesn't feel quite right pulling for the Lookouts in Dodger blue instead of Cincinnati Reds look.
Cincy's French toast casserole? I want that recipe. That stuff is awesome.
I got a salad for lunch today. I love 'em. What's wrong with that?
Well, it sure tasted like it was still ok to eat. That was seriously DEEEEE LISH! I'll send you the recipe, PF.
let me go see what else I can find on my Refrigerator Rummaging.
french toast caserole? sounds yummy.
ehyou - nothing, as long as there's meat on/in it. I love Wendy's BLT salad with the fried chicken breast filet. Yummy! MrsTHT eats those nasty little tomatoes and the cucumber slices for me.
The Barons have been with the White Sox for 24 years, so it would throw me off a little if they changed, too. It seems like minor league teams do change affiliations with some regularity. I know the Huntsville Stars and Nashville Sounds have both changed since I lived in those cities.
Jet and Norm, I used to go to lots of Montgomery Rebels games back in the day. I'll bet we crossed paths at Paterson Field at some point.
As far back as I can remember, the Lookouts have always been with the Reds, so it was the first change for me.
What I was talking about earlier was players that started every game since they got to Auburn, not ones that started every game they played in. There is a big difference. Offensive linemen seem the most likely to be starters every game they play. Few of them are starters as freshmen.
E-Bro, I feel for you with the vacation thing. When I worked as a contractor I was in much the same boat. I did get one week paid vacation a year, but if I worked that week, I basically got paid for it twice. So, I ended up never taking time off. I made a lot of money, but it sure wasn't fun.
My dad and I would go see the Burlington Indians/Senators/Rangers and Winston-Salem Red Sox when I was a kid. Saw Jim Lonborg, Luis Tiant, Billy Conigliaro, Toby Harrah... and a bunch of nobodies.
Minor league teams listed forever and ever
Robbie Maddison is a mad man.
Steve- Actually, quite a few of them started as true freshmen and on:
Victor Riley
Kendell Simmons
Willie Anderson
Steve...it's certainly not ideal, and I'm always on the lookout for something more permanent, but it's a job and I'm making money, so can't complain too much.
Chattanooga = Reds affiliate 1988-2008
(affiliated with Mariners before the Reds)
PF - I guess he couldn't see THE BRIDGE about 200 yards away.
Yeah, I was born in 1982 and I don't remember attending in Lookouts games before 1988.
Weird that we were a feeder club for the Mariners, though.
OK. So I misspoke. There is no practice today. That's on me.
I'll try to cook up something else tasty instead. It'll have to be this afternoon, though.
Please tell me you didn't drive to Auburn before discovering that.
The Montgomery Rebels were a Tigers affiliate back when I was a kid, so I saw Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, and "a bunch of nobodies".
E-Bro,
I can remember the Lookouts being an Indians and a Mariners affiliate...back when their mascott was named "Pop Up".
They were a Seattle farm club when I saw Bo Jackson play at Engle Stadium for the Memphis Chicks in 86.
JGT - I've come to trust your reporting so much that I just figured the AU AD web site was wrong.
If you want a tasty topic, try some of Cincy's "Early Morning French Toast"
Speaking of minor league, anyone know where I can get a Macon Braves cap? I've been looking online for a while, but it almost seems that all merchandise was destroyed when they moved to Rome.
What are the first pitch times for the series this weekend?
RK...Been going to Lookouts games longer than I have, obviously.
7,2, and 1, Wells.
just noticed that Jimmy Hitchcock and an elderly Rogers Hornsby were Lookout teammates in the late 30s.
I probably went to my first Lookouts game when I was 4 or 5, so that would be 1980-81.
Future "Twin Terrors", Harmon Killebrew and Bob Allison played for the Lookouts in the mid '50s.
per Wikipedia..
Killebrew led the majors in HRs during the '60s...
Asked once what he liked to do for fun, Killebrew replied, "Well, I like to wash dishes, I guess."
will the Hotties come back if I go take a shower and put some deodorant on?
E-bro ...Count yer blessings if ya gotta job right now. The Noog is doing OK because of the VW plant. The NW Ga economy gets worse as you head towards Atl.
Don't worry Hoopie. I do.
Just be glad you have a job these days is right. It doesn't look like things will be getting much better soon.
The Noog is a fav 2 day family getaway for folks from our area. Lookouts, I-max, Aquarium, Rock City, Ruby Falls and decent downtown restaurants.
And consulting isn't bad at all. I made a lot of money doing it. It is just a lot of work and little down time. I do miss time and a half, not to mention that I usually made about 30% more consulting than as a regular employee.
The other thing is that consulting isn't as unstable as many think. There were many places I worked where regular employees got layed off before I did. As a matter of fact, every place I have been to since the mid 90s, I lasted longer or as long as my boss did.
Consulting can be a very good thing.
SFC, I noticed that the rebound in retail sales was followed immediately by a jump in oil prices. We can expect that trend to continue and drive us right into inflation. Don't gamble on oil futures unless you are prepared to watch it daily, buy oil stocks for a 1-2 year hedge .
I have been considering getting into oil, but so far I am holding off. I had BP and CHK on my list for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
A lot of the economy won't be sorted out until the environment in Washington changes, which isn't likely to happen anytime soon. We haven't had many options in terms of fiscally responsible candidates in a very long time.

I love me so oil company stock.
Speaking of the lack of fiscal responsibility, I vaguely recall reading somewhere decades ago that the U.S. hasn't been out of debt since the 1830s. Anybody know if this is true?
I think it's since WWII, THT. I recall a history teacher talking about War Bonds for the government and the implementation of the income tax. Since then, they still haven't been able to balance the budget and now it's just "cool" to hang out in the red.
THT, I haven't read that, but there has certainly been times when we were spending less than we were bringing in.
And I do include other things such as encouraging companies to remain in the U.S. rather than heading overseas.
We really shouldn't get too political here, so I don't want to talk specifics, but it isn't a Republican or Democratic thing.
Hang out in the red corresponds with it being cool to buy your votes, which many politicians have trouble resisting the urge to do.
we whittled our debt down from 127 milliion in 1816 to less than 34 thousand in 1836. So, looks like we've been in the red since the very beginning.
National debt for every year since 1791
the last time the national debt decreased from one year to the next was 1956-57.
It plummeted zero point 8 %
The budget deficit and the national debt are two different things, but one similarity is that both are getting worse all the time.
Thanks THT. That is very interesting. Early on you can see the direct correspondence between debt and wars, but thing have changed.
I would like to see the same numbers and how the correspond with which party controlled things.
What I believe you would see is that we do better when there is a mix and one party doesn't control both Congress and the White House.
In the more recent years we get into mistakes made in terms of how we financed our debt, which caused it to balloon.
Another interesting thing would be to see how that corresponds with the American people getting into debt and the evil, which is credit cards.
Interesting tweet I just received.
FootballAU: lee ziemba has a chance to leave auburn with more starts than any other football player in school history.
Talking about this puts me in mind of the butt-whoopin that we OWE uat this fall!
Anybody wanna file my estimated tax stuff for me?
That reminds me, I do believe the economy is directly tied to who wins the Iron Bowl. When Auburn wins, the economy improves and unemployment drops.
I don't do the tax thingy. I have some lady in North Carolina that I have never met that does my taxes.
I was thinking it was since the Civil War that we have been in debt.
A war that costs a million bucks a day would have done that back in the 1860s.
I do believe we should have a Lee Ziemba appreciation hour. The guy is good.
Ironically, the economy tends to improve after a war, which is my chief argument for invading Canada.
I'd argue that we should invade just to punish them for giving the world Celine Dion.
re: invading Canada
...and for retribution for those 2 Neil Young songs.
Quitstina - we are apparently in the same stupid club. I want to be in the Smart Club.
THT, is this one of them?
Neil Young
Please, those pour people have it bad enough. They live in canada. I say they have been punished enough.
that's one I need to add to my iTunes, SC. The 2 I was thinking about are not in my iTunes, even though the music is great.
I can definitely guess one of the two that you're not fond of, THT.
Lee Westwood is making this course look silly today.
SFC, I like the Iron Bowl paralleling the economy.
"We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," said Ronnie Van Zant
From what I've read, Neil Young went on to become friends with the boys from Skynyrd, even occasionally appearing on stage with them, and singing on "Sweet Home Alabama".
So I'll give him some props on being a little humble and having a laugh at himself.
I believe it's "The Last Waltz" DVD that they have a shot of Neil Young with so much cocaine on his face he looks like he dove into a pool of flour.
Good music though.
Neil Young was an honorary paul bearer at Ronnie Van Zant's funeral.
He wrote the song "Powderfinger" that ended up being on "Rust Never Sleeps" for Skynyrd. He thought it would be a song that would sound good with their triple guitar attack.
That being said, Neil Young is asking waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much for his concerts these days. Tickets in Knoxville go from $92-$225.
Wells,
On "The Last Waltz" they had to go in and edit every time the camera got a close up shot on him to remove the caked up coke on his face.
Quoting Rick James from Chapelle's Show, "Cocaine's a hell of a drug."
not that anyone cares, but Heath Shuler was in the office today. i missed him but my co-worker left me a few autographed items on my desk. cool.
After Schuler arrived, did Gus Ferrotte show up and replace him?
E-Bro, PK,
Do both of you guys live in Chattanooga.
With so many Chattanoogan AU fans on here, we could have hottie night at the 'phone booth' (aka BellSouth park).
Or is it AT&T park now? I don't go as much as used to.
PK,
I think Ferotte was picked in the same draft, just much later.
Funny story, a co worker friend of mine was at a UT game and some said "Look it's Heath Shuler, what is he doing here?" My friend replied, "it's not like he has anything to do on Sunday".
That did not go over very well with the UT fans around him.
Heath Shuler is proof that college QBs shouldn't turn pro after their junior year. I will say he managed his money well and got elected to congress which is a rarity among NFL QBs.
Jay G,
You going out to Barber this weekend>?
In general, college players do better if they don't leave for the NFL early. There have been a lot of stars that turned into flops real quick.
OT: OJW is on AMC (I think) tonight followed by Pale Rider.
OJW was on HBO from back in the 70s until the mid 80s. It is how I use to tell which channel was HBO.
stupup...me and RK are indeed both from the Noog. Thought you knew that. My bad. Quite a presence of hotties in the Scenic City area.
I also believe the ballpark is now called AT&T Field.
I was on some committee that chose the free movies for Langdon Hall many, many moons ago. My contribution to said committee:

Hello, Peasants.
I tried to get me a Shon Coleman t-shirt ($10 of cost goes to St. Jude for children's cancer research) but I don't trust the security of the site to put my credit card info there, and the link to paypal didn't work (times 2).
Any Hotties have one of these?

Braves-SF are 0-0 in the bottom of the 2nd. Tim Hudson pitching.

Funny THT cause this is when i usually sign on and its always so dead
oh, I'm sorry. Did you say something, Fearless? I must have dozed off.
My car, he of 228k miles, failed on me today. I guess it's a transmission problem. The car just lurches and pulls back, can't accelerate without a brain-scrambling shimmy.
It's now safety stationed at Haigler Auto on Atlanta Highway.
Sorry for the delays this has caused. I'll get something up ... even if it's a filler thread until tomorrow's scrimmage.
my condolences, JGT. Don't worry about us. We're fine.
sorry about the car jgt, mine has done that before never fun. Yeah THT i'm trying not to doze off myself, but watching the bravos is helping
