Lee Ziemba speaks out

Hey everyone. Offensive tackle Lee Ziemba stopped by for a chat moments ago. The interview took a turn for the terse when I asked about his penchant for penalties. His answers are blunt, revealing and important.

  • On his problem with penalties in 2009: ``I didn't think they were as bad as everybody makes it seem. Watch an NFL game. How many false starts do you see? Yeah, I messed up a few times. There's a lot of factors. It's a tough thing, but we're trying to get it fixed and corrected so it doesn't happen again. It's the game of football. It's a lot tougher than people think it is. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination."

  • On if the penalty situation is overstated: ``Heck yeah. I hear it going to have supper with my girlfriend. Somebody stops me. It's ridiculous. Whatever. You get in this position, you're going to hear stuff like that. We're trying to get it fixed. I'm always trying to improve. I come here every day and work my tail end off to try and improve myself. That's my job."

  • On if he feels underappreciated: ``I'm not doing it for appreciation. I'm doing it because I love playing football and I love Auburn University. I'm not doing it for anything other than that. I don't feel underappreciated. I feel good. I love being here. I wouldn't change anything about it. Yeah, I need to work on penalties. I have to work on a lot of different aspects of my game that people don't mention. It's not like I'm trying to mess up."

I'm trying to string together three weeks of vacation during the World Cup so I can watch every match.

THT,

I also was at the "people of the corn" game in 1982. I wasn't really that interested in football and didn't know who Bo was. There was a lady sitting behind me who had on a button that said "My son is number 34." I quickly realized the "Go, Bo" signs were about her son.

That is probably when my increased interest in Auburn football began. I treasure that memory.

The Barons have been with the White Sox for 24 years, so it would throw me off a little if they changed, too. It seems like minor league teams do change affiliations with some regularity. I know the Huntsville Stars and Nashville Sounds have both changed since I lived in those cities.

Jet and Norm, I used to go to lots of Montgomery Rebels games back in the day. I'll bet we crossed paths at Paterson Field at some point.

What I was talking about earlier was players that started every game since they got to Auburn, not ones that started every game they played in. There is a big difference. Offensive linemen seem the most likely to be starters every game they play. Few of them are starters as freshmen.

And consulting isn't bad at all. I made a lot of money doing it. It is just a lot of work and little down time. I do miss time and a half, not to mention that I usually made about 30% more consulting than as a regular employee.

The other thing is that consulting isn't as unstable as many think. There were many places I worked where regular employees got layed off before I did. As a matter of fact, every place I have been to since the mid 90s, I lasted longer or as long as my boss did.

Consulting can be a very good thing.

SFC, I noticed that the rebound in retail sales was followed immediately by a jump in oil prices. We can expect that trend to continue and drive us right into inflation. Don't gamble on oil futures unless you are prepared to watch it daily, buy oil stocks for a 1-2 year hedge .

12:50 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have been considering getting into oil, but so far I am holding off. I had BP and CHK on my list for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

A lot of the economy won't be sorted out until the environment in Washington changes, which isn't likely to happen anytime soon. We haven't had many options in terms of fiscally responsible candidates in a very long time.

Speaking of the lack of fiscal responsibility, I vaguely recall reading somewhere decades ago that the U.S. hasn't been out of debt since the 1830s. Anybody know if this is true?

1:04 PM
Blogger wellsAU said...

I think it's since WWII, THT. I recall a history teacher talking about War Bonds for the government and the implementation of the income tax. Since then, they still haven't been able to balance the budget and now it's just "cool" to hang out in the red.

1:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

THT, I haven't read that, but there has certainly been times when we were spending less than we were bringing in.

And I do include other things such as encouraging companies to remain in the U.S. rather than heading overseas.

We really shouldn't get too political here, so I don't want to talk specifics, but it isn't a Republican or Democratic thing.

1:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hang out in the red corresponds with it being cool to buy your votes, which many politicians have trouble resisting the urge to do.

we whittled our debt down from 127 milliion in 1816 to less than 34 thousand in 1836. So, looks like we've been in the red since the very beginning.

1:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks THT. That is very interesting. Early on you can see the direct correspondence between debt and wars, but thing have changed.

I would like to see the same numbers and how the correspond with which party controlled things.

What I believe you would see is that we do better when there is a mix and one party doesn't control both Congress and the White House.

In the more recent years we get into mistakes made in terms of how we financed our debt, which caused it to balloon.

1:19 PM

Another interesting thing would be to see how that corresponds with the American people getting into debt and the evil, which is credit cards.
