Your Sunday morning update
Hey everyone. Birthday Sleepover 2010® is in the books. That was six 8-year-old girls, two cupcakes each, unlimited Disney Channel and enough plush animals to create a well-stocked zoo.
My goal today? Get to Talladega Superspeedway and watch some racin'.
So I'll be around the HABOTN, but I'll be posting from the media center adjacent to Pit Road. If a few of you are planning to watch the race, I'll post occasional behind-the-scenes updates.
If you're not into racin', I understand.

Johnny Sauter was the first guy to lose it in the Lap 83 incident, but he was bumped by Kyle Busch. The Sauter people are trying to get that car back on the track. Good luck.

Love the New Tiger Prowl bus!!!!
Digger, I used to think like you about staying in school, but I recently started seeing it differently. I thought about why I went to college. Yes I wanted more knowledge and I think the more you know the better off you are. However the main reason I (and most others) went to college was to earn more money and have a career. For some that money is made in sports. So if a kid can go make that money why not? You can always go back to school later when you your career is over. I know that may not be a popular opinion amongst the college educated population, but it's how I feel. If I had a son with that kind of talent it would be tough for me to tell him to forgo college. People can say money isn't everything (and they are correct) but it accounts for most everything.
Where can I see pictures of the bus? I think that is a great idea. A lot of jealous fans (walmartians to be exact) of other schools made fun of it last year. It was only because their coaches didn't think of it 1st. It helped recruiting last year and it will continue to pay off this year. Get the kids interested and then get them on campus. Once a kid sees Auburn they fall in love. They don't always choose Auburn, but its on their mind when they make their final decision.
If F4* lives up to my expectations as a multi-sport athlete, he'll get drafted out of high school for one of the MLB teams before the 3rd round is over. If that holds true, it'd be hard for me to advise against delaying college until after he'd seen what he could do with the pros. If that draft/dream scenario doesn't play out like that, then he'd better get a full scholly somewhere.
If I'm not mistaken, Tiger Prowl is making a stop in the Gump tomorrow. Somewhere in the downtown vicinity. I bet WTC can confirm or refute that information.
I would never advise my son (well if I had one) to go to college over taking a minor league contract if he was drafted semi early. The minors are all about turning you into the long term best player you can be. College baseball is about winning now. There is no question which is better for the kid in my eyes.
Minor League Baseball doesn't pay very well, and the odds of making the pros are similar with prospects that go to college.
There is no right or wrong answer. There's been successes and failures from leaving early and staying in school.
Leave early and you could end up like Snead (although he will get a chance to make a roster somewhere) or stay and you could end up like Ken Swilling.
I'm going to steer my kids toward fencing and crew to make sure they never have to make decisions like that.
PF - chess team?
I still would like them to be athletes. Geez, Norm, you trying to get my yet unborn kids beaten up?
PF...
So you're gonna encourage your kid to either sell stolen goods or row a boat?
I just learned something new about criminal activity.
True PF, the salaries aren't high, but if you are drafted in one of the first few rounds the signing bonus is. A first round pick is in the multi millions, a 3rd round pick can be close to a half a million.
Haha PF, you learn something new everyday don't you.
PF - you learned that you're a natural at it? Have you picked a specialty? It's a pretty broad field, I don't think you should try to stretch yourself too thin.
Thanks, but no thanks. This thread suits me just fine.
