Gene Chizik speaks in Montgomery

Hey everyone. I have returned from the Montgomery Auburn Club shindig, which was held in the very upscale-ish Renaissance hotel.

Thanks to Ronda Beesley and Stan Maxey, MAC stalwarts, for being there for me.

I also want to give another shout-out to WEG. That's twice in a week!

OK. OK. So what did Chizik have to say?

I'd be happy to share those comments with you.

  • On the NCAA's decision to ban Auburn's "Tiger Prowl" barnstorming tours to high schools: ``We don't really put a whole lot of time and thought toward why rules are made up. We obviously follow the rules. With the SEC or the NCAA, whatever they are, we follow all the rules to the best of our ability."

  • On if it's a good thing (as Trooper Taylor expressed) that the NCAA is curbing Auburn's enterprises: ``I don't think of it in terms of that at all. We just follow and abide by whatever legislation that they make. That's really what we do."

  • On if his staff will begin brainstorming some new ideas: ``We're always going to do whatever we can to market Auburn and Auburn University football. We'll always do that. When we get done with this recruiting season, we'll go back and revisit it and look at what it is that we could have done better. We try to do that with every phase of our football program."

  • So do you meet at a big table or what? ``We do. We throw it out on the table and see who's got what."

  • So who is your MVP when it comes to ideas? ``I've got a whole room full of MVPs. It's really a great mix. There are a lot of creative ideas and creative minds in there. Guys really know their trade well. They know 17- and 18-year-old men and what gets them excited."

  • Is there a synergy between what you all do and what Tony Barbee is doing with basketball? ``I know Tony is going to be really great at the recruiting area of our basketball program. We've already gotten together and worked together and talked through some things. I think there will be a lot of parallels between what we try to do and they try to do."

  • How can you help them? ``Anytime there's a basketball recruit who's interested in Auburn -- just coming to the football end of it and coming to a game-day experience. I think that always helps. When you can come to an event that shows the passion and the tradition of a place, I think it really open the guys' eyes."

  • Does that actually work? ``I think so. I think you work as a team with all of the basketball-football-baseball guys. It's all one, big family. We always try to cross over and help in anyway we can -- both in knowledge of where players are and what we can do to help … with recruiting."

  • What's the latest with Big Cat Weekend? ``That's kind of down the road a little ways. We're in the premliminary processes in terms of getting ready for it. That was a fairly successful weekend last year in our opinion. We don't know exactly where we're at with it right now in terms of how many, who is coming. We feel really good about it going to be a really good weekend."

  • Do you find that last year's publicity makes the prospects come to you and ask for an invitation? ``I don't know if they come to us. You always have to go out and seek them and energize them enough for them to want to come. Last year's success certainly helped."

Don't tase me Bro.....

PF ..your arguments against the ability for law enforcement to maintain order with lawbreakers, reminds me of my inane arguments demanding "privacy and rights" during the misguided recreational drug use phase of my youth.

That person with the badge has a dangerous job. You "stop" when they say "stop". If you don't stop then be prepared for some form of force. If they aren't allowed to stop you, anarchy would soon prevail.

Mostly only lawbreakers have a problem with this arrangement.

The USA is much more lenient in these situations than most countries. Go try to run from the law in Singapore!!!!

Cothran signing Wednesday is a HUGE get for AU. Look how far this class recruiting class has come since Barbee took over. AU will be a young team next year, but I think they will surprise several folks by how athletic they are. Look for this team to rebound VERY WELL. Cothran is the real deal for AU. Do not let anyone else tell you they did not want him or whatever. AU took a BIG step forward by getting him.

Catching up on the threads from last night and I have an Auburn/equine story.

We're in Birmingham several hours before the Iron Bowl and assembling for the road game tiger walk. The Birmingham Police Department pulls in nearby and unloads their Mounted (horse) unit. They try to disperse the crowd by having their horses high step sideways, which they are trained to do. A mounted cop looks down at the Auburn Man standing next to me who is holding his ground and says "Sir, do you see this horse here?".

The Auburn fan, wearing orange and blue sweatshirt, ball cap, and holding a shaker, responds in our best Ag tradition - "Well cowboy, if you can't ride em, don't rope him". Our crowd laughed at the comment and team arrived shortly thereafter. The police dispersed.

Howdy Hotties - I was cut loose from jury duty today. That didn't stop the almost 2.5 hour round trip though before Fulton County gave me the good news. So, here I sit in my comfy chair at home not going to work for the man at his palatial digs. Though I will do a bit of busy work for him. I'll also do some yardwork and get that out of the way.

Thoughts on various posts since I left yesterday afternoon:
EHYOU - I contribute to the economy thereby keeping people employed doing what they do best. Sure, I can change my own oil (and have many times), could probably have fixed what ailed my mower myself too, but I put a $ value on my own time and sometimes opt to pay someone else to do things for me which they can do quicker than I can.
WAKE - I've always been a big supporter of law enforcement. My brother in law was a detective in the Gump before he died, I have many good friends also wearing a badge. I even toyed with the idea of being a cop myself but for one reason or another didn't. I also used to want to be a cowboy, a fireman, professional baseball player, and a lawyer (not all at once) but they never happened either. I'll pull over if the lights come on and I'll never run. I may be able to outrun one guy, but I'll never outrun all of his friends who join in the race.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was
manufactured in England .
In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for
delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the
great ship after its stop in New York .
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever
delivered to Mexico .
But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York .
The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly
awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.
Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning,
which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs
each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as - Sinko De Mayo.

OK ..I know it's corny ...save the smack.

What if there was a rule in soccer that you could taze one opponent one time during a game?

Would that make it more interesting?

12:25 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Don't tase me, bro!

12:26 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Tasing would make any sport more interesting.

12:27 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Jet...I'm pretty sure that would make anything more interesting. PF might even approve of it for soccer purposes.

12:27 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I could watch vids of people being tased all day.

12:28 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Is there a mandatory 3 day waiting period to buy a taser? I may go get one today. I don't have any particular people I want to deploy it on, but I could see myself using it on a certain Akita.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

I'll bet Saban tases his assistant coaches twice a week.

12:32 PM
Blogger Jet said...

If you could taze 3 sports figures, who would make the list?

12:33 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Nick Saban, Alex Rodriguez, Ray Lewis.

12:34 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

That's not in any particular order.

12:35 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

oooh, good question.

i'd have to think on that one a bit.

12:41 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Sabarpoleon, Paul Slimebaum and T. Owens.

12:41 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Apparently another fan ran on the field in Philadelphia last night, but they didn't taze him.

He stopped running, however.

12:42 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Nick Saban, Barry Bonds, T.O.

Special media category: Paul Finebaum, Eli Gold, Stephen A. Smith (if he's still around)

12:43 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Wow, CH-B. All three of yours made my list. Great AU minds think alike!

12:44 PM

Saban, Saban and Saban.

might be old news, but Cothron says he's coming.

Seanzie's Honorable Tase List: Didier Drogba (I'll give him something to dive over), Big Ben, Peyton Manning.

12:55 PM
Blogger CHB said...

that's what they say Scott.

I like Barry Bonds though. That's probably because I am a Giants fan. I can certainty see how someone would not like him. I didn't like him as a person, but what he could do on the diamond was special. I know people want to say he cheated, but he was great before that. Also steroids can make you see the ball the way he could. There haven't been many who could.

Ooh, Tim Brando...that's a good one.

Bonds was a great player, but a jerk, and didn't need to cheat.

Blogger E-Bro said...

Not for any hateful reason or anything b/c he seems like a decent guy, but I'd tase Roy Upchurch if given the chance.

Preferably with about 1:30 left in the 2009 Iron Bowl.

Pf - about that soccer vid -- I've been trying to figure some sane reason that the dude would bite the other guy's johnson. Other than being gay, I'm left with nothing.

Hey PEEPS.

I just had a meeting with my top editor about the HABOTN and how we can go OVER THE TOP (Sly Stallone style) with it.

I'll fill you in here shortly.

Auburn? Quiet right now.

3:52 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I know how you can bring HABOTN over the top. Give away free stuff, and ban schmucks like Peter Frankenschmidt.

3:55 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Don't ban them, just tase them.

3:57 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

JG, did you tell your editor that the HABOTN > every other crappy sports blog in all the land?????!!!!!

just thought he should know.

Well, just got 12 emails saying PayPal was confirming payment for things I DID NOT buy. They caught it after $600 has been instantly transferred from my bank account, but before it got dispersed. Now I have to wait for it to go through and then transfer it back to my bank account. I thought PayPal was supposed to be safe!?

Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

yikes! that sux Cincy. i use Paypal all the time. not good! not good at all!

Saban, the next UAT coach, and Bear

yep, I'd dig him up to tase him.

Nothing is safe. Ever. Tasers aren't safe. Paypal isn't safe. Puppets certainly aren't safe.

Blogger Miller said...

Been out of town.... trying to get caught up...

Not sure if I gave my thoughts on the tasing subject... but, I say tase them once while running on the field so you can get them off, then tase them again for being an idiot. Also, the Dad of the 17 year old that got tased for running on the field in Philly... yeah, that dad should get tased too for giving his son permission.

If I could tase 3 sports figures... Bud Selig, Sabearpolean, Finebaum...

6:23 PM

On a happier note...

Everyone should be tased at least once in their lifetime... at some point we've all done something stupid to deserve it.

I'm interested in everyone's thoughts on lasers, phasers, and razors.

6:30 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Gotta have sharks with frickin' laser beams...

phasers are played out...

Now, with he razors, are you referring to a straight razor to shave with (or slice)... or the little skateboard replacement thing that the punk kids ride? Well, the punk kids that aren't cool enough to ride a read skateboard.

6:36 PM

That's great, Miller, but really J-Z just wanted some recommendations for getting rid of his back hair.

7:03 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Miller, don't knock the razor till you try it. My neighbors kids had one. That thing is pretty tough to get use to. Just getting started is hard. it can roll in all directions and swivels at the same time. I got pretty good at it. Then I think I pulled something.

Blogger Miller said...

Well, mishap #1 for the evening... I tried to time it just right and have wifey a hot bath run when she got home.... apparently I have misjudged the timing. I wonder how she will like the cold bath?

This doesn't bode well for my mahi experiment.

ESPN pre-season ranking for college football.

7:31 PM
Blogger wtc said...

I really don't disagree with that ranking that much. I think that ranking will look much different by seasons end.
I am thinking that if Boise St beats VaTech, they will be in the BSC game and no matter who else can go undefeated, they will not play in the NC game. Think AU in 2004. I see something like that happening this year.

7:36 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

I can't disagree with that ranking either. I do think everyone is over looking Auburn but what's new.
Totally off subject and of little interest I'm sure.
I will be gone deep sea fishing Thurs through Sunday. Staying in Orange Beach but had to go to Destin to get a boat out. Won't be on the HABOTN till Sunday.
Looking forward to seeing what JGT has up his sleeve.

I find it ridiculous what the Phx Suns did tonight with their jerseys. For one I have a different view than their ownership, but the main reason is because I don't think a sports team/owner should use their product to push their political view. Over half of Arizona residents are in favor of the recent immigration bill. The Suns are lucky people even came to the game.
