Gene Chizik speaks in Montgomery

Hey everyone. I have returned from the Montgomery Auburn Club shindig, which was held in the very upscale-ish Renaissance hotel.

Thanks to Ronda Beesley and Stan Maxey, MAC stalwarts, for being there for me.

I also want to give another shout-out to WEG. That's twice in a week!

OK. OK. So what did Chizik have to say?

I'd be happy to share those comments with you.

  • On the NCAA's decision to ban Auburn's "Tiger Prowl" barnstorming tours to high schools: ``We don't really put a whole lot of time and thought toward why rules are made up. We obviously follow the rules. With the SEC or the NCAA, whatever they are, we follow all the rules to the best of our ability."

  • On if it's a good thing (as Trooper Taylor expressed) that the NCAA is curbing Auburn's enterprises: ``I don't think of it in terms of that at all. We just follow and abide by whatever legislation that they make. That's really what we do."

  • On if his staff will begin brainstorming some new ideas: ``We're always going to do whatever we can to market Auburn and Auburn University football. We'll always do that. When we get done with this recruiting season, we'll go back and revisit it and look at what it is that we could have done better. We try to do that with every phase of our football program."

  • So do you meet at a big table or what? ``We do. We throw it out on the table and see who's got what."

  • So who is your MVP when it comes to ideas? ``I've got a whole room full of MVPs. It's really a great mix. There are a lot of creative ideas and creative minds in there. Guys really know their trade well. They know 17- and 18-year-old men and what gets them excited."

  • Is there a synergy between what you all do and what Tony Barbee is doing with basketball? ``I know Tony is going to be really great at the recruiting area of our basketball program. We've already gotten together and worked together and talked through some things. I think there will be a lot of parallels between what we try to do and they try to do."

  • How can you help them? ``Anytime there's a basketball recruit who's interested in Auburn -- just coming to the football end of it and coming to a game-day experience. I think that always helps. When you can come to an event that shows the passion and the tradition of a place, I think it really open the guys' eyes."

  • Does that actually work? ``I think so. I think you work as a team with all of the basketball-football-baseball guys. It's all one, big family. We always try to cross over and help in anyway we can -- both in knowledge of where players are and what we can do to help … with recruiting."

  • What's the latest with Big Cat Weekend? ``That's kind of down the road a little ways. We're in the premliminary processes in terms of getting ready for it. That was a fairly successful weekend last year in our opinion. We don't know exactly where we're at with it right now in terms of how many, who is coming. We feel really good about it going to be a really good weekend."

  • Do you find that last year's publicity makes the prospects come to you and ask for an invitation? ``I don't know if they come to us. You always have to go out and seek them and energize them enough for them to want to come. Last year's success certainly helped."

How it it really any different than Steinbrenner no allowing long hair or facial hair? He was making a personal statement with his team.

I think wanting your players to be clean cut is different than what the Suns did. Totally different. The military is made up of all political backgrounds and view and they have a policy on facial hair.

The "Mahi Experiment" was my first attempt at cooking Mahi (first attempt at cooking fish of any type)... and if I may brag, it was a smashing success!

Mahi fillets cooked in lemon juice, lime juice, cracked pepper, and chopped mango and pineapple. Served with a mango and pineapple salsa topping, mashed potatoes, and fresh veggies.

9:18 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

That's BS, CH=B. The military's policy has a very specific and helpful purpose.

It's an owner doing what he wants with his team. They pay the money, it's their product to do with what they please. If fans don't approve, they don't show up, and the owners adapt or lose money.

9:19 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I see nothing wrong with an owner trying to maintain a professional looking appearance with his team. I do have an issue with injecting politics or in any way using a team to express personal views. Even if the team supported the idea, I think it's an inappropriate forum.

9:19 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

If you have a problem with it, buy a team, and run it the way you want...or don't purchase his product.

9:22 PM
Blogger Norm said...

AND, whether or not I happen to agree with those views, that's not what I pay my $ to see or hear. I'm a big Bocephus fan. He hooked us up with tickets for his show over our way recently. He spent a few minutes during the show expressing some of his political views. Even though I actually did agree with what he said, and even though I didn't pay any $ for that concert, that's not what I was there to hear and I wasn't particularly pleased by it.

9:23 PM
Blogger Norm said...

I absolutely, positively guarantee that I won't watch any Phoenix Suns games or buy any of their gear.

9:24 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Maintaining a professional appearance is as much of a statement as anything else they can do. You all just happen to agree with that statement, so you think that right is justified. I don't even necessarily agree with what the Suns owner did, but I agree with his right as an owner to do what he wanted....

9:24 PM
Blogger Miller said...

The least he could do was use the proper terminology. Los Suns? Shouldn't that be Los Sol?

9:25 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Your entitled to your opinion PF, but don't BS my opinion.

9:26 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Yes, Los Suns is incorrect. I asked my wife the same question when I saw it...Spanglish!

9:27 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I BSed your logic, not your opinion. It was a faulty comparison.

9:27 PM
Blogger Norm said...

It's the wrong place and wrong time to make a statement. He has every right to his opinion and every right to contribute to any candidate or cause he pleases. But, this wasn't the time.

I'm tired and won't go into a protracted discussion along the lines of taser pros/cons. That's my opinion. If you don't agree with it, well, you're just plain wrong. I'm right. I'm always right. Deal with it.

Good night folks.

9:29 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

I guess I don't ever want to be told that I'm out venue to express my opinion. I support people's rights to do what they want, when they want (especially if they could be tased). I have no interest in the Suns, so I cannot tell them they are wrong.

9:32 PM
Blogger Miller said...

You're all entitled to your own opinions... however wrong they may be.

9:36 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Your mostly right Pf, you should be able to express your opinion regardless of who agrees with that opinion. I would like to know if all of the players like the idea or just went along with it because he is the owner. How would you have liked for your boss to come to you and say that for casual Friday everyone in the office has to wear a shirt that reflects his political views?

9:38 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Have a good night all.

PF, we can agree on at least one thing....WDE!!

9:41 PM

Morning Hotties.

I'm not sure I agree with WAKE's statement that the whole world should be tased. For one, I think I should be excluded. It's been many, many years since I've done anything worthy of a taser. Then, if the decision were mine to make, I'd say go on and tase anyone who doesn't agree with me. Pick a topic and if they disagree with me, well that's a tasin'.

As for the Braves- Yes, they swept the crappy Astro's (I mean, one of those teams had to win, right) and split with the Nationals so far. I know, they are still struggling right now and have dug themselves a tough hole to dig out of IMO.

9:24 AM

There is no such thing as a tough to get out of hole 27 games into a 162 game season. We're talking 17% played.

An interesting "Whadda ya think?"

At an NAIA conference golf tournament, player from Team A, who along with his team has qualified for the national tournament, is in a playoff for the individual championship. Player for Team B, whose team will not make the tournament, can make the tournament as an individual if he wins the playoff.

Player from Team A respects Player from Team B and wants the guy to advance to the tournament. So he his his drive out of bounds and throws the playoff.

Sacrificial sportsmanship or cheapening of the game?

4:25 PM
Blogger API said...

I like Wal-Mart. Target carries a more limited inventory, but they occasionally have something I want. I'm in Target maybe once a month. I'm in Wal-Mart at least two times a week. K-Mart, maybe once a year.

4:56 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jet ....In it's purist form, golf is an individual sport. Since "team" issues have been removed from consideration, then there is a reasonable point that the decision could be left up to player A.

There are however, 2 affected parties:

1. The NAIA player that didn't get in because Player B did.

2. Player A's school doesn't get credit for the individual championship.

Do those 2 parties warrant consideration? I say they do. I say that you play to do your best.

I hope player B beats player A for a national title and turns around and kicks him in the teeth for being disrespectful and making him feel like a charity case.

Region cannot be trusted until he signs on the dotted line.

Can anyone who has access to info on Region share with us who are too poor for the pay sites? Maybe I'll have money again when I sell my condo :)

Someone with two condos and a home is not poor....maybe not liquid, but not poor....Donald Trump once had cashflow issues. He was not living on the street, though.

Cincy,

Some other AU website that I will not name says on Facebook that some dude from Bamaonline.com is reporting the Region thing.

So, Bama found an offer for him again? So dumb. He commits to Auburn and they don't want him. Freakin liars. I hate them.

The rumor was started by someone on a walmartian website. I call bs. He said he was 100% and has reportedly been recruiting heavily for Auburn. He is credited with getting Dismukes and O'Reilly to commit. I know verbals are not always upheld, but I would have to say for him to change his mind then some money changed hands.

PF,
Point taken :) I'm not exactly eating beans and rice, but my spendable cash would increase dramatically with the sale of a condo.

Two of the premium sites I looked at teases with Region picked AU over AL but may be having second thoughts. Just wondering if he really is having second thoughts or that is just a teaser to get me to buy their site.

Goldberg reporting on Regions as well. Way too early in the recruiting to call any of our commitments solid. As for Regions, he attended the Tiger Prowl in Madison. I think he is a confused young man. Hopefully Big Cat WE will clear up the muddy waters.

Kathy,
I got on and read Goldberg's article. And much against my better judgment I read the comments. I must say I was very pleased with the majority of the AU comments. They really want Region, but they want him to be sure it is Auburn he wants. Very supportive.

Cincy,

When he was in Madison, AU fans were taking pictures with him and really talking him up. I think most AU fans are rationale and really do want him to go where he will be comfortable. Can't imagine that would be in UAT, but if it is, so be it.

After your son moves in and you are up this way, we will need to get together for lunch, supper, coffee, etc!

Luke Cothron has signed his NLI with Auburn! That's good news.

Okay,

He was at Tiger Prowl taking pictures with fans/boosters? Does this make anyone uncomfortable?

No

PF, he drove up with his parents to attend Tiger Prowl, which is open to all people. Nothing wrong with that.

Kathy,

Where did you see that Cothron signed?
