New member on the way?

Hey everyone. News is breaking at this hour about Texas A&M and its feelings about the Southeastern Conference.

The Houston Chronicle, citing an unnamed source, says school regents are expected to meet this week and discuss a possible jump to the SEC. An offer apparently is on the table.

Houston is the fattest city in America.

Have a nice night.

Made the trip to see the Cotton Bowl loss against TA&M. That was one heck of a long road trip, not my longest, but it was a long one. The trip back was considerably shorter since we pulled in behind two AL State Trooper cars and did 100+ for a couple of hours. Before we had to pull off for gas, there must've been a caravan of 20 other cars from Alabama doing the same thing.

Aside from that, I kind of like the addition. Conference expansion? Who knew? You'd think there'd have been some talk of it before now.

Clearly, proximity is not the prevailing thought in any of these expansions. But what do I know? I'm just a nerd on a con-call currently listening to a bunch of other super nerds. I'll let some of our resident experts discuss the relative merits of proximity vs market vs the price of tea in China.

It would be interesting to know what exchanges there have been between Slive and the SEC. Surely Slive has talked with them about how attractive it would be to get the four Big12 schools into the SEC television contract.

It is ironic that we are suppose to hear something about this on Thursday. We are suppose to hear from Texas on Tuesday and Oklahoma on Wednesday. It will be a very interesting week.

As someone who has attended (and graduated from) both Auburn and Texas A&M, I can tell you that the culture at A&M is quite different from anything in the SEC. Very, very "Texas" if you know what I mean. Although A&M is very focused on agriculture and the curriculum is similar, the culture is just different.

And College Station is a loooong way from any SEC schools but LSU and Arkansas. Actually A&M has a long-standing rivalry with LSU and played in the SW conference with Arkansas, so there are those ties.

I'm not sure it's a good fit for the SEC, but bringing in a school with over 40,000 students and a huge alumni base might make financial sense even if the cultures aren't exactly a match.

Just a quick fly by post this morning before I go back into internet blackout after an awesome weekend of Bonnaroo and US-England.

Listened to lots of good music. Had lots of free drinks. Even saw McLovin in VIP yesterday. Such good times.

Enjoy all the World Cup action today.

Question for you runners - Do you struggle with shin splints? As you know, I have been walking the STEEP hill in my neighborhood for the past 3 weeks or so and my shins are starting to bother me. They aren't terrible, but I don't want them to get that way. I walk 6 days a week about 50 minutes each day and am wearing good Mizuno shoes. Anything else you suggest?

#2 is stay off concrete when you exercise. It is not very forgiving. Move to asphalt. if possible move to grass to exercise. both of these substances are more forging than concrete. Otherwise, back off the training a little. Could be a sign your body is telling you that this is too much too fast.

Do we really expect recruits to migrate en masse the PAC10 or the BIG10 simply because they have 16 teams instead of 12?

I'm far from convinced that expansion is the prudent action.

Jet's early a.m. authoritative declarative statements.

1. I've always liked "The Aggie War Hymn." Any song that has "Go Tell Aunt Rhody the Old Gray Goose Is Dead" embedded in it can't be all bad. Plus, it's a "War Hymn." In fact, it makes it better than 95 percent of college football fight songs.

2. Chip's quote ... "Unfortunately, Dothan is also in Dothan" is prizeworthy.

3. It is hot, and will get hotter.

IV,

The reason I am against A&M is I don't think it adds anything to the SEC. Much the same as I feel about Arkansas, it's just a trip into the southwest that really isn't needed and geographically it doesn't fit in.

I just don't like the expanding west idea. I would have probably voted against the Louisiana Purchase.

8:15 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

A couple of reasons to expand would be to expand TV marketshare (which is the primarary driving force of all this, right?) and increase the competition level for the conference. I'm not entirely sure that A&M does either, much less any of the other teams in the Big 12, ACC, or Big East other than Texas and from what I can tell, Texas is the only one that would do both. But then again I may just be looking at the football/basketball side of things.

8:23 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

These expansion scenarios change quickly. I can't believe every school is letting Texas drive the bus, especially OU. That is just crazy. I have a slight feeling that the Big 12 may actually stay intact.

I'm ambivalent on expansion. More money = good. More TV time = good. Traveling to Texas from S.C. != good.

I guess if expansion is happening anyway, I could pick some teams I'd like less than TAMU (in no particular order):
- University of Idaho
- Any other school in Texas except for UT
- Alabama

And my mother-in-law's family is from SE Texas, so maybe it'll give us an excuse to go visit.

Talked to a local A&M friend this a&m, so to speak.

He said he'd love to be in the SEC -- money, exposure nationally for the program and more opportunities for him to see his team personally and on TV.

Says Texas has a perpetual yeast infection that would prevent it from being in the SEC.

9:29 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The Big12 staying together actually makes sense, even though last week I would have thought it unlikely. With A&M wanting to head East and Texas wanting to head West, it would seem like the only logical compromise.

The A&M rivalries with LSU and Arkansas does make them make sense in the SEC. A&M would be Arkansas' biggest rival in the SEC. They are already in the middle of a 10 year contract to play each other.

9:33 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

why can't we (the SEC) just dump Arkansas so they can join the Big 12 with TX & TAMU. the SEC can pick up Clemson or FSU. i'd rather do that.

The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday.

This story sums up how the Big12 might survive pretty good, although it is wordy.

Everything has shifted from what Texas will do to what Texas A&M will do. The other wild card in here that isn't discussed is Missouri, who at one point appeared head to the Big10. Should the Big10 keep expanding, then things would get weird all over again.

It definitely appears that there are still conflicting reports.

A post I made earlier had a typo in it. I was wondering what talks Slive may have had with ESPN (not SEC) on how much the TV contract would be worth if some of the Big12 schools were added. It is possible that Beebe could get one upped with a new SEC/ESPN TV deal.

All of this is very confusing and nothing is certain. Another move by the Big10 could shake up everything.

Pac-10 and Colorado ... don't lose ... they just don't win as much.

Colorado has always heavily recruiting California ... now it will recruit players that will actually get to play in the state with regularity.

Pac 10 can take Utah .. .be the Pac 12 ... up the money with 2 new markets -- Salt Lake City and Denver.

It's not a grand slam but it could be an RBI double.

Presuming the rest stay behind, then The Big Twelve Minus Two = Texas gets whatever it wants stays together until Texas decides the new arrangment isn't working out, and it renegotiates the deal with the Pac 10 + Colorautah.

I don't think we're ever done. People will always be looking for the bigger, better deal.

Actually, Nebraska has already lost a lot by being stuck in the Big12 North.

To me, Colorado kind of got screwed. Prior to Nebraska leaving, the Big12 was definitely better than the PacX. Even with Nebraska gone, it still may be the better conference. Not to mention that Colorado has to pay $10 Million to get out of the Big12. That, coupled with the Big12 apparently getting a better TV deal, makes Colorado look pretty foolish.

Nebraska nor Colorado are by any means screwed. They just could have had similar money in the near term and maintained their traditional rivalries.

Unless, of course, the Big 12 disbands in the next 10 minutes, which could happen.

Michael,

You've got it wrong. Nebraska and Colorado are both screwed...cause they aren't Bama, the best team in the universe...and beyond.

utx staying in the 2 less only gives this thing eternal life. there will now always be rumblings about the 2 less being raided if the new tv deal is not a dumptruck load of gold and some long term commitment from utx is reached.

Breaking News?

Shameless Mindbomb has parrotted an unconfirmed report that Texas news outlets are saying that the Big 12 will be intact by adding BYU and Air Force.

5:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hmmm, well, maybe with a little luck mindbomb will start reporting what we type on here as un-names sources.

5:29 PM

By the way, I have seen BYU and Air Force mentioned as possible replacements. BYU seems like a pretty good choice. I don't know about Air Force.

5:30 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

With the addition of Boise, and the Big XII looking to raid BYU and Air Force, can we go ahead and give the Mountain West credit as the fourth best football conference above the Big East and ACC. I don't care what the two have done in the past, they aren't putting the product on the field that TCU, BYU, Utah, and Boise State are.

Looks like Texas has decided.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

choosing Air Force over TCU? Is that the non-Tx teams or the Tx teams that are dictating that? Or both!?

TCU would be a much better addition to Big 12, but the northern teams probably don't want the balance weighted anymore in the direction of the Lone Star State. The sips probably were thrilled to hose TCU (and SMU, Houston, & Rice) when the Big 12 was formed, so they probably wouldn't be too eager to extend TCU an invite.

6:05 PM

chip chip - I hereby declare Tx the big winner. It looks like the Big 12 schools are giving Tx the combination to the safe. But yes, Utah may definitely come out Rose-y.

Utah will die in the PAC10+2. Those skinny boys do OK playing an easy schedule and then getting fired up for a big game once or twice a season. Let's see how tired and beat up they get playing a full-sized team each week ...even if it is only the PAC10.

6:24 PM

This has a significant effect on the SEC and what Slive could do if the Big10 expands further. Some of the stuff I have read suggested Slive was focused on moving West. It just got a bit tougher. This makes schools like FSU, Clempson, and GT more likely for the SEC. But if the Big10 doesn't go past 12, I bet the SEC doesn't either.

6:29 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Didn't remember Utah being "skinny". Just looked at their roster. There are a few small guys on there, but it looked pretty standard to me. OL are all around 300 pounds, except 1 dude, as are the DT's that I remember eating up Bama's OL a couple of years ago. Boise tends to be a little small, which they make up for in speed (don't tell me that can't be done, the SEC practically invented that approach while the Big 10 was looking down their noses at us), but I don't think thesame can be said for everyone west of Texas.

6:39 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I don't expect it, but serious case of vertigo would result if Big Ten+2 pursued further expansion and targeted the Atlanta market & fellow AAU member Ga Tech. That would max out the weird meter.

The Big 12 surviving (for now) is a good thing for college football. Slive did the right thing though by trying to pick up some of the pieces if they had broken up.

With USC effectively neutered for the next several years and the Pac 10 expansion scheme foiled, will they move behind the Big least as the least relevant BCS conference?

8:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've already seen it written several different places that Texas used the Big 10, BIG 12 and PAC 10 to make itself richer. As best as I can recall, the other conferences came calling and Texas just negotiated the best deal for themselves. Since Texas didn't initiate anything, how could they be using others?

I think the ACC is the most in danger of that award. The rest of the Pac-10 has been moving closer to USC for a few years now. I think they're in a solid position at the right time.

I'm also not convinced that the Big 10 didn't crash and burn. I keep seeing thecomment about them bringing up the idea just to see what everyone else would do, but I think they had more than one failed plan, then had nowhere to go.

I am thoroughly confused how the B12 (minus2) is going to more than double their TV revenue while dropping 2 teams and losing a conference championship game... To get to the $$ figures that Beebe has proposed they will need to increase their TV revenue by approximately $90mil per year (They brought in $78mil last year).
