The Pac-10 makes its first addition
Hey everyone. News is breaking in the Mountain Time Zone where Colorado has accepted an offer to join the Pac-10 Conference.
Should SEC fans worry? Not about that.
However, Joe Schad (whom I respect) has a source telling him that Colorado simply is the first of several more Big 12 Conference schools to make the jump.
Nebraska is linked to the Big 10 Conference search for a new member. That deal is expected to be finalized this weekend.
Does that mean the Southeastern Conference must somehow keep pace? After listening to commissioner Mike Slive speak a few times last week and talking with a few ADs privately, it's reasonable to assume the league already has reached out to Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
How involved were those conversations? I don't know.
Was a membership offer extended? I'm almost certain it wasn't.
Still, Slive and his top league cohorts -- Charles Bloom, Mark Womack, et al. -- are shrewd when it comes to business affairs. They honestly believe a lucrative and thriving SEC, with its 12-school lineup, doesn't need to position itself any differently with the upheaval out west.
At least that's what he said last week.
``Given our success over the last decade, we're pretty comfortable, as I think you all know," Slive told reporters in Sandestin. ``Having said that, if there's a significant shift in the conference paradigm, we will be thoughtful, we'll be strategic and our goal is for us to maintain our position as one of the most successful conferences in the country. People have been drawing inferences from that, they'll continue to draw inferences from that, but really that's about all we're going to say about it."
It's not like the Atlantic Coast Conference is disbanding. That's the SEC's closest neighbor and a conglomeration of schools within driving distance.
Texas? Missouri? Oklahoma? Considering how we all see Arkansas as basically the North Pole in terms of proximity, I don't see why these particular realignments will have any effect on the SEC Sphere of Influence.

Scottie B. is Rowland-fast!
click-click-boom.
After reading those quotes, It is plain to everyone that Slive has offered those 4 teams a deal to come tot he SEC and they will accept it.
Or did I miss read it?
Consider it a done deal.
wtc, a powerful jedi is he. it is the future u see.
Arkansas is a little more remote than that.
If that's his plan, it's a solid one.
Texas is the "gotta get" out of this situation. Getting Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma is the best case scenario. Okie State is the logical fourth of that group.
But if it's necessry to get the four Texas schools (Texas, A&M, Tubby Tech and Baylor) in order to seal the deal, then it's like Gov. Riley has said in re oil spill.
We need more Boom.
norm...
Are you trying to further lower the IQ of habotn by providing bad links?
I heard there's going to be a year off of football in 2012 since the world's ending and all.
This is kind of a hmmm because I have seen a couple of scenarios. One has Colorado joining the Pac10 with the Big12 South minus Baylor. The other has Colorado and Utah joining the Pac10.
What Texas decides to do appears to be the sticking point. They would bring a crowd with them, but would they insist on bringing Baylor? If so, who out of the Big12 south wouldn't make the trip?
The other important part here is that now if Nebraska or Missouri heads to the Big10, you can pretty much count the Big12 as done.
PF, good point about the world ending. In the past I have heard that hell would have to freeze over for ND to go to the Big10. Well, maybe the coming to an end it good enough.
We have a trade ...
The Big 12 Conference has acquired the naming rights of the Big Ten Conference and a crate of crunchy Cheetos in exchange for the University of Nebraska.
My expectation is that the State of Texas is trying to play the Pac-10 into taking Baylor and Texas Tech to ensure those schools remain in power conferences (the SEC has no interest in Baylor and TT
Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M will maneuver to the SEC once TT and Baylor are secured. The Pac-58 will be screwed.
Party like it's 2004!!!
I hope those weren't the crunchy Cheetohs I just polished off before the pizza I had for lunch. I'd hate to be the responsible party in that whole deal getting called off.
nice FSJ. real nice.
FSJ - I love Apple and Google and I don't like it when they fight. I prefer google calendar over ical. How many hoops does one have to jump through to be able to sync an iphone with google calendar? Google contacts?
So I suppose Oklahoma is now the defacto national champions since that bowl blowout never happened?
OU? No chance. They got beat too bad. I maintain UTAH is the 2004 National Champion.
Yea we will probably win the National Championship because we all know that with the Mayan calender ending Dec.21, 2012, we won't get to enjoy it.
Seanzie, i'm a thinkin' you're a nazi. and i love killin' nazis.
Interestingly enough, that's also by my birthday.
Seanzie,
I concur. One more for the urban.
Isn't the SEC like Christina Hendricks when a bunch of Kathy Bates are your only other choices? Would anybody in their right mind turn down an invitation?
You will be born in 2012?
To many put a lot of stock in the Mayan calendar ending. Nobody considers the possibility that they Mayans may have just run out of paper.
aaahhhh, Christina Hendricks....
grab your spit shield
Coach Lou will talking about where ND stands in this chaos... on ESPN after the commercial
So far I have seen nothing to indicate the SEC will expand. Keep in mind that even with Colorado going to the Pac10, it is still just an 11 team conference so far.
Yes, I'm posting from this same time but on a different time parallel.
Steve, to think that the Pac-10 would operate as an 11 team conference with all this talk of expansion happening would be...illogical.
The world can't end in 2012. I won't have my house cleaned by then.
THT, I have my gmail, google cal(s) and google contacts all synced to my iPhone. Easy peezy lemon squeezy!
I also have exchange enabled and my work email/cals/contacts synced.
Which then syncs my google cal and my work cal. It's all a pretty good union.
THT....I can help you with that...hold on
The Pac10 will likely not operate as an 11 team conference, but they might just add Utah to get to 12. This mega-conference hasn't happened yet and may not.
You're right, it may not.
THT..
Do this..

"@bylawblog If the Big 12 dies, USC gets hammered, and Izzo leaves all in one day, I want to double check that Mayan calendar for "NCAA"."
And I haven't seen where anyone has proposed the Pac10 would stick at 11 teams. I am not sure where that is coming from.
The Big 10 and the Big 12 both have 11 teams. What is this world coming to?!?
as does the PAC 10!
apparently they're not smarter than a 5th grader.
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
thanks, y'all
ENOUGH I GET THE POINT!
"These men caused an explosion."
"Is this true?"
"Yes....This man has no xxxx."
Hahaha, good point Seanzie.
I still think the Big12 won't fold unless Nebraska jumps ship, which is seems pretty like from what I have read.
I have seen nothing to indicate expansion of the SEC is likely, which makes the Pac16 a distinct possibility.
There is a wildcard in all of this. I have read a bit about some congressmen wanting to block it. If congress gets involved, this really will turn into a mess.
There is also talk of congress removing the tax exempt status of college football teams, which would be a huge change.
Are you all hearing/reading that none of this will be in place until 2012?
Lame duck years in 2010 and 2011?
That's a big Twinkie.
Interesting Sensi. I knew it wouldn't happent this year, but didn't know it would be another two years.
Does this mean that the Big 12 is on hospice?
Christina Hendricks.
Oh, my.
Christina Hendricks. Nice name drop, Jet.
I recently saw her in an old Firefly episode the other day. I was a fan.
"This happened to you before?"
"Huh. First time?"
Credit Ehyou for mentioning her first. I was just echoing his thought ... thought ... thought.
From what I have read of the teams going to the Pac10, 2012 is correct. It is also when the Pac10 is suppose to start a new TV contract. They are getting the teams in place so they can negotiate.
These USC sanctions don't seem that harsh to me. 10 scholarships over 3 years? No bowl for 2 years? Who would trade that for an NC?
2012......2012....we're all going to die anyway.......
They're not that harsh FC. That's the problem with the NCAA.
Banning USC from TV for a couple of years and losing 20 scholarships would seem more appropriate. ESPN is talking like USC is being treated harshly.
those poor Trojans. they're always treated so poorly aren't they. sad really.
:P
This just in. Kansas basketball coach suddenly realizes football is driving the boat.
Oh, ESPN dude wonders if NCAA might get dropped by colleges, which is something I have wondered for a while.
Ahhhh, Finebaum is on ESPN!!!
Can we just go ahead and make the FBS a 4 league division with 16 teams each? Then the other 40 or so teams can go have fun with the FCS teams. We'll have a 4 team play-off between the 4 "Super" Conference champions and all will be well with the world.... If you over look that "the world will end in 2012" stuff anyway.
Ed King #67 post!
"The football team will lose 10 football scholarships annually from 2011-13. "
4 super conferences=64 schools
as of yesterday, 57 schools in ACC, SEC, Big10+1, Big12, PAC10.
that only leaves 7 slots to be distributed for teams from the MWC, Big East, WAC, ConfUSA, MAC, Sunbelt, and ND.
I don't think that scenario can fly unless those 64 teams leave the NCAA.
The NCAA keeps failing to show any clout. The USC penalties are pretty ridiculous compared with what they gained from cheating. Vacating wins? Whoopie. Even vacating the NC and Heisman seem trivial. USC made the bucks because of these things and the NCAA doesn't touch the bucks. The NCAA appears to have been castrated.
does that mean a max of 75 scholarship players those 3 years? If so, that's only 3.3 schollies lost per year for those 3 years. That's pretty weak.
Maybe Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State should just form their own conference to be called the Screwed4.
Yea, it is 3.3 scholarships a year. It is a little hit, but not huge. As long as USC doesn't have huge attrition, it shouldn't be a big deal.
I think there's a lot we don't understand about this world, like the afterlife....or how bread turns into toast.
This is never helpful to your case...
The assistant football coach's credibility is further compromised by his claim that he
neither knew nor talked to agency partner A despite the four calls between the
two (three calls the weekend of the top prospect's visit and the January 8, 2006,
call). The committee finds that the conversation occurred as described by agency
partner A and, therefore, that the assistant football coach violated NCAA ethical
conduct legislation (Bylaw 10.1-(d)) by providing false and misleading
information to the enforcement staff regarding the call and his knowledge of
agency partner A's activity.
I saw 30 scholarships over 3 years. How does that equal 3.3?
THT, leaving the NCAA is an option. I would argue, though, that of those 57 teams, more than a few would be among the teams to go to the FCS.
Duke football? No sir.
Iowa State? None, thanks.
Vandy? Take it or leave it.
Aside from that, are there more than 7 teams from those conferences who would belong among the top 64 programs? Boise, BYU, Utah. Who else?
I guess I left Notre Dame out. Oops.
Wait. ESPN just said USC lost 30 football scholarships. If that is true, that is a very harsh hit.
Holy Cow, it is 30 scholarships. Someone get me a shot of Kiffikin's face.
30 something is close to what we originally got for Langham...
It was later reduced to 20 something after the lawsuit by the faculty rep.
They are carying 10 less scholarships for the 3 years...Not really 3.3 schplarships, but not really 10, either (except the first year). 30 scholarship years...
Can only sign 15 players per year. 75 scholarships total. Ouch.
Iowa State is on the up and up. Chiz worked really hard there to lay a foundation for Rhoades, who is running with it.
Kiffikin's dream job just required him to grab his ankles. Keep an eye out for the recruiting rankings.
"to put it in perspective, Alabama lost 7 scholarships a year for three years. USC is going to be down 10 a year for three years."
yep, PF - i was just rethinking the math and my brain froze
BEASLEY!!!
HELLO KENNESAW!
that's teamwork!!! (something you don't see in the Big12)
Because of Chizik playing young players, Iowa State now has a very experienced team. He did do better for Iowa State than people give him credit for. He basically sacrificed the present to build for the future.
When he was hired by Auburn, he said as much and that Auburn was a different situation. Auburn had the athletes to win immediately. Iowa State didn't.
THT,
The math is impossible, because a four year scholarship isn't lost. The loss is in terms of a unit we don't think in: scholarship year. I kinda wonder if they'll be able to maintain 75 if they can only sign 15 (where did that come from?) a year. Oops, my brain just froze.
I don't know how I feel about all this conference stuff.
whattup personal assistant!
Someone on ESPN just made a good point. The Big12 was a much more impressive conference than the Pac10. Getting raided by an inferior conference is very shocking.
Herbstreet said the SEC would still be the best conference and could possibly add FSU and Miami.
Some other dude thinks the Pac16 would be the strongest and most competitive conference.
To compare fairly, count the NCs the SEC has over the last four years in comparison to the Pac16 teams.
Well, I'll tell you how I feel. It's great to see the zookeeper on HABOTN!
So USC will remain undefeated for the 2004 regular season?
from yahoo sports:
The NCAA found that Bush, identified as a “former football student-athlete,” was ineligible beginning at least by December 2004 and through Bush’s Heisman-winning 2005 season, which ended with the Trojans’ loss to Texas in the 2006 Rose Bowl.
The SEC is not going to break their 2 schools per state rule for FSU AND Miami.
SteveFC - it's like when Piedmont Airlines (value X) was bought by US Air (value x minus a lot). It all went down the toilet.
That would include their win over rival, UCLA as well.
Does anyone know if the BCS has contractual obligations to the Big 12 (or anyone else for that matter) beyond 2011? Do those obligations survive some or any reshuffling of teams?
If so, seems that the remnants of the Big 12 still have that BCS bowl bid and their TV contract (maybe) as potential bargaining chips to lure some teams (Boise, Utah, TCU, Memphis, Cincy, Louisville, etc) into a reconstituted Big 12, er 10....
ah, yes. USC ended their season on SEC Championship game weekend. You are correct, Seanzie, as always. (and someone dared call you an idiot! what a fool!)
but according to wikipedia, that UCLA win is "V" for vacated, not "L" for loss. I think I should edit that.
Serious wackiness afoot:
http://www.kctv5.com/sports/23860558/detail.html
Reporting Texas and TAMU in talks with Big Ten, and Oklahoma in talks with SEC.
If TX goes to the PAC-10, I wonder if we'll have PAC-10/SEC match-up in the Cotton Bowl. That would be pretty cool.
Oklahoma State has reportedly accepted its invitation to the Pac-10.
If a local TV station reports it, ignore it.
Here's there contribution to the reportage:
Reporter: What can you tell us about conference realignment.
Unidentified source (probably the mail clerk): Uh, it sounded like a train.
*their.
Jet, are you saying that leprechaun wasn't real?
I moved from Oklahoma to get away from that Big 12 crap..
Well Big 8 crap...and well also because my parents moved and when you are 13, you don't have much of a choice.
I am really not liking this.
Hey Scottie and THT!
I couldn't help myself. I removed "possible" from the following statement on wikipedia
USC was forced to vacate Championship win due to results of an NCAA investigation into possible violations by the Trojans' football and men's basketball programs.
Quit - your parents were wise, and so were you to follow them.
PF, I have never heard of or read the SEC's two schools per state rule. Do you have a link?
Vacate doesn't mean losss, it just means not win.
I can't see Oklahoma coming to the SEC and severing so many ties. There would have to be Texas or Nebraska coming too. They play Texas and Nebraska every year. Would they keep them on their out of conference schedule? No way and there is no way those series end.
No, I don't have a link. I'm busy. Can't you just trust me? Geez!
I just can't see the Big12 South separated. Yea, Baylor and Texas Tech, maybe. But Oklahoma, Texas, & Texas A&M are too tied to each other.
Nebraska's already leaving them for the Big 10.
No. Sorry. I can't.
USC's MCN and wins have been annulled.
Nebraska is Big12 North, which was a really suck division. The heart of the Big12 was always the south.
MCN=MNC
Well, that's your problem. Choose your google words carefully. Too many words brings back unwanted search results.
TX & OK have only been tied to each other by conference for 14 years. Before that, they played a non-conf. game against each other for a thousand years. That rivalry will survive, I hope.
The TX/OK rivalry and the OK/NB rivalry have to remain. I can't imagine it otherwise. That is why I can't see the three being in three different conferences. Two, yes. Three, no. Having one permanent big time out of conference game is doable, but not two.
I just remembered to mention that I saw Ben Tate on tv last night practicing with the Texans. He was wearing #43.
Who's problem? I have not problem. Who are you talking to?
this is the sec's chance to step on the neck of the college football world. if they sit idly and let others catch up, stupid. add the tx and ok 4 and no one will ever catch up. i also now officially advocate ejecting vandy's intramural programs in favor of gtech or free shoes u.
So do we get a banner or not.
chip chip, I would like to see it, but I have seen nothing to make me think the SEC will grab Texas, Texas A&M, Ok, and Ok State. It would be great, but so far it doesn't look like that will happen.
What happens with Missouri seems interesting since it appears they haven't been invited to the Big10 yet. They could be a possible SEC team. They wouldn't be bad. They aren't as good as Arkansas, but better than South Carolina.
I want da gold.
Steve...Oklahoma and Nebraska no longer play each other every year. Haven't since the Big 12 was formed.
Hmmm, really? I will check it out.

very few dud games for us fans.
E-Bro is correct and I find that amazing. It use to be a heck of a rivalry.
The loss of traditional rivalries may be the biggest negative of this realignment.
damn! you could finish 4th in your division and probably feel good about it!
Chip Chip, I would love that. The East would be great. The West wouldn't be quite as strong, but still good.
remember how big nebraska v. colorado got for a while?
The only problem with that is UK and USCe would get beat to death in the East.
there would be no need for a bcs or mnc of any kind with the sec16.
like they do now. they get still get paid and isn't that what its all about?
UAT in talks with HELL conference. Single member conference will play A-Day games every Saturday on a lake of fire. Record attendance expected from Bammer fans (until they are all gone).
ms, msu and arky would have a tough time in the east. osu still has t. boone behind them. although i understand the gigantic trust he established and managed for them got killed when the market tanked. he's still got more in his wallet right now than i will make in my lifetime. bring him in.
There's something about ejecting Vandy that doesn't seem right.
I realize they're pretty far from a level of intense competition with the rest of the SEC, but they've endured for so long.
I think loyalty presides in this situation. They have accepted doormat status for the majority of their time, and we should keep them.
There's no question that tech would provide us with a better "we're STILL the best conference" statement though.
i seriously think if bammer is given the death penalty they will still field a team and play offense vs. defense at turdtown.
chippie - will Bear be roaming the sidelines?
no AD. football is "intramural". thanks for playing. next up georgia tech...
...and it would sell out every week, and they would award themselves another national championship every year.
he would be the only coach they could get.
they would be assured of having no better or worse than a .500 record.
did i mention i hate bammer. well, i do.
They would conveniently only recognize the winning side, whether dark pink or white team, to ensure an undefeated season.
I like Vandy. They contribute to lots of stuff other than CFB.
Colorado should have joined the Moutain West to form the Mountain Momma conference. Now, they likely would still not get an automatic BCS bid, but they would have a cool name.
Hey, and any time adopting John Denver's Country Roads song might be able to take out Rocky Top as the most annoying song played at a football game.
Wouldn't West Virginia have to join to make it the Mountain Momma Conference?
It dun be a Crack head who got hold of the wrong stuff.
Rocky Mountain High Conference would be more approrpiate.
Friends around the campfire, and everybody's high
Yea, throw West Virginia and Kentucky in there somewhere.
so, which Hottie has the audio feed from the secretive meeting going on in Austin? Are the doors still closed?
It dun be a Crack head who got hold of the wrong stuff.
I can't read that without laughing. It just gets funnier and funnier.
So, any chance that Kiffikin decides that Tennessee was his dream job?
I find the Kiffikin situation hilarious. Yea, I understand the don't give up the ship philosophy, but how many people were screaming to get on board the Titanic as it was sinking?
this time the captain didn't go down with the ship. he just moved to seattle. i'm kiffykin, dad and o have a lifeboat.
i'm sure that is.
Listening to Finebomb today (I know, I know) and they were explaining the sanctions against USC. 2 years no bowl games, okay that is easy to understand. Then they said 30 scholarships lost over the next three years. So each year for the next three they would only be able to sign 15 players. Seems like a pretty hard hit, if I understood it correctly. Did I?
It would really be difficult for Kiffikin to leave USC quickly after his lengthy stay at Tennessee. I doubt anyone would welcome a Kiffikin quickie.
cincy, that sounds correct. Initially I thought it was 10 scholarships over 3 years, not 10 per year. 10 per year is a big deal.
Somehow I see Norm Chow jumping up and down clapping his hands singing happy happy, joy joy.
Count Chocula ... in re leprechaun.
I'm not sure. I am still interested where da gold at.
But it coulda been a crackhead.
SOCCER
Where da goal at?
