The Pac-10 makes its first addition

Hey everyone. News is breaking in the Mountain Time Zone where Colorado has accepted an offer to join the Pac-10 Conference.

Should SEC fans worry? Not about that.

However, Joe Schad (whom I respect) has a source telling him that Colorado simply is the first of several more Big 12 Conference schools to make the jump.

Nebraska is linked to the Big 10 Conference search for a new member. That deal is expected to be finalized this weekend.

Does that mean the Southeastern Conference must somehow keep pace? After listening to commissioner Mike Slive speak a few times last week and talking with a few ADs privately, it's reasonable to assume the league already has reached out to Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

How involved were those conversations? I don't know.

Was a membership offer extended? I'm almost certain it wasn't.

Still, Slive and his top league cohorts -- Charles Bloom, Mark Womack, et al. -- are shrewd when it comes to business affairs. They honestly believe a lucrative and thriving SEC, with its 12-school lineup, doesn't need to position itself any differently with the upheaval out west.

At least that's what he said last week.

``Given our success over the last decade, we're pretty comfortable, as I think you all know," Slive told reporters in Sandestin. ``Having said that, if there's a significant shift in the conference paradigm, we will be thoughtful, we'll be strategic and our goal is for us to maintain our position as one of the most successful conferences in the country. People have been drawing inferences from that, they'll continue to draw inferences from that, but really that's about all we're going to say about it."

It's not like the Atlantic Coast Conference is disbanding. That's the SEC's closest neighbor and a conglomeration of schools within driving distance.

Texas? Missouri? Oklahoma? Considering how we all see Arkansas as basically the North Pole in terms of proximity, I don't see why these particular realignments will have any effect on the SEC Sphere of Influence.

If that's his plan, it's a solid one.

Texas is the "gotta get" out of this situation. Getting Texas, A&M, and Oklahoma is the best case scenario. Okie State is the logical fourth of that group.

But if it's necessry to get the four Texas schools (Texas, A&M, Tubby Tech and Baylor) in order to seal the deal, then it's like Gov. Riley has said in re oil spill.

We need more Boom.

This is kind of a hmmm because I have seen a couple of scenarios. One has Colorado joining the Pac10 with the Big12 South minus Baylor. The other has Colorado and Utah joining the Pac10.

What Texas decides to do appears to be the sticking point. They would bring a crowd with them, but would they insist on bringing Baylor? If so, who out of the Big12 south wouldn't make the trip?

The other important part here is that now if Nebraska or Missouri heads to the Big10, you can pretty much count the Big12 as done.

4 super conferences=64 schools

as of yesterday, 57 schools in ACC, SEC, Big10+1, Big12, PAC10.

that only leaves 7 slots to be distributed for teams from the MWC, Big East, WAC, ConfUSA, MAC, Sunbelt, and ND.

I don't think that scenario can fly unless those 64 teams leave the NCAA.

2:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The NCAA keeps failing to show any clout. The USC penalties are pretty ridiculous compared with what they gained from cheating. Vacating wins? Whoopie. Even vacating the NC and Heisman seem trivial. USC made the bucks because of these things and the NCAA doesn't touch the bucks. The NCAA appears to have been castrated.

2:25 PM

does that mean a max of 75 scholarship players those 3 years? If so, that's only 3.3 schollies lost per year for those 3 years. That's pretty weak.

The assistant football coach's credibility is further compromised by his claim that he
neither knew nor talked to agency partner A despite the four calls between the

call). The committee finds that the conversation occurred as described by agency
partner A and, therefore, that the assistant football coach violated NCAA ethical
conduct legislation (Bylaw 10.1-(d)) by providing false and misleading
information to the enforcement staff regarding the call and his knowledge of
agency partner A's activity.

i seriously think if bammer is given the death penalty they will still field a team and play offense vs. defense at turdtown.

he would be the only coach they could get.

they would be assured of having no better or worse than a .500 record.

They would conveniently only recognize the winning side, whether dark pink or white team, to ensure an undefeated season.

I like Vandy. They contribute to lots of stuff other than CFB.

Colorado should have joined the Moutain West to form the Mountain Momma conference. Now, they likely would still not get an automatic BCS bid, but they would have a cool name.

Hey, and any time adopting John Denver's Country Roads song might be able to take out Rocky Top as the most annoying song played at a football game.

Wouldn't West Virginia have to join to make it the Mountain Momma Conference?

I can't read that without laughing. It just gets funnier and funnier.

So, any chance that Kiffikin decides that Tennessee was his dream job?

I find the Kiffikin situation hilarious. Yea, I understand the don't give up the ship philosophy, but how many people were screaming to get on board the Titanic as it was sinking?

Blogger chip chip said...

this time the captain didn't go down with the ship. he just moved to seattle. i'm kiffykin, dad and o have a lifeboat.

Listening to Finebomb today (I know, I know) and they were explaining the sanctions against USC. 2 years no bowl games, okay that is easy to understand. Then they said 30 scholarships lost over the next three years. So each year for the next three they would only be able to sign 15 players. Seems like a pretty hard hit, if I understood it correctly. Did I?

4:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It would really be difficult for Kiffikin to leave USC quickly after his lengthy stay at Tennessee. I doubt anyone would welcome a Kiffikin quickie.

4:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

cincy, that sounds correct. Initially I thought it was 10 scholarships over 3 years, not 10 per year. 10 per year is a big deal.
