How about if we let you start by jumping off a RAID server?

I didn't see Ben wrinkle his nose indicating an accidental poo by the geezers, but they may have needed to change their Depends. Assuming so, the $550 they won probably eased that embarrassment. They were some funny old folks.

I'm sooooo ready for football season to start. Can't wait to see Hotties on Sept 4.

But right now I'm on a shorter countdown... 85 minutes til Psyche.

7:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks Cincy. It has me pumped too.

I have read where Phil Steele predicts we will start out 11-0. Looking at the schedule, it is possible. Both LSU and Georgia have been a bit off lately.

But my big worry comes early in the season when we play MSU, Clempson, and South Carolina. That is going to be a tough stretch.

7:37 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I know it's favorable in that we get a lot of these top teams at home, but it all looks tough to me. Kentucky figures to be as good as last year when they beat us.

Ole Miss will fall back into the role that Houston Nutt loves so well...under the radar. There will be no easy game. I'll be shocked if we start 10-1 or 11-0.

Bigger doors, bigger washing machines... but what's up with the same dinky folding chairs for the players? You'd think they could find some chairs a 6'8" guy could sit in without his chin bumping his knees.

Bobby Johnson retiring bums me out. I really liked him. He's a good dude. I can't say that about all SEC coaches.

I just wonder if he struggled to get over Kwane Doster being murdered in 2004 and having his top recruit this year, Rajaan Bennett, murdered by an out-of-control family member.

I would struggle with that. I could see him trying to reckon it throughout the spring and early summer and finally getting to a point where you say: I can't do this. It's not getting better.

8:30 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

You could be correct Jay. I respect what Johnson did at Vandy. Just looking at the Ws and Ls doesn't tell the story. He made Vandy competitive and that isn't easy. He also put the first nail in the coffin of Tuberville with that 13-14 upset.

9:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, I know it would be unethical for you to list the coaches in the SEC that aren't good guys, but would you mind supplying a list of SEC coaches that are good guys? That is positive and upbeat.

Augh. I hate seeing things like this, but it's apparently my lot in life.

You know how in poetry, sometimes you take a letter or two out of a word so it fits the meter better? "O'er the ramparts we watched," "'Twas the night before Christmas," etc.? You put the apostrophe in where the letter got removed.

Now look at the fight song mural. "On to vic'try." NO NO NO! It should be "On to vict'ry," dangit! Or just spell out the whole word, it's not that big a difference.

I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't look at these things too closely.

Just watched the vid Steve posted, and yeah, it's go time baby!!

On the drive in they were interviewing Matt Stinchcomb on ATL sports radio. First I can't believe that he and David Pollack went to the same school, and am now convinced Pollack did not actually attend ANY classes. Matt talked about the 3-4 and that the emphasis there was the nose tackle and the interior LB's. I also had another thought in the 3-4 defense and how it will work against our offense. And I realized again that the much heralded defense from the other side of the state could not stop it in its tracks. And this with all of those now NFL guys on their side. I'm feeling better. Sure we have some things to find out about our offense, but I realized again, the offensive scheme is a good one, as long as our guys (particularly the QB) are healthy.

The concern that I have is was it the offense and just lack of execution or was it the scheme that LSU and Kentucky used last year to completely shut us down?

If it was just our execution, then I feel better, if there is something in those LSU and Kentucky videos that other teams can use, then I don't know.

7:03 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I think Kentucky/LSU was a combo of personnel, execution. I agree with you RK as you've stated often in the pass, Gustav's situational play calling needs some refinement, but I think part of the issues with the offense last year were indicative of a first year unit where both the coach and players are familiarizing themselves with each other.

I expect there to be a much higher comofort level this year. It all just depends on whether Cam can take the reins.

7:13 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I thought it was decided that LSU and especially UK issues were because of guys being hurt, more than the scheme. I'm not sure where I remember that from, but I'm certain it was mentioned here. Once C Todd got "better" everything seemed to fall back into place offensively.

7:16 AM

I want Gus to live up to the hype that he gets and us to put up tons and tons of points. However, much like Cam Newton so far, he's still unproven at this level.

7:26 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

I doubt any D could stop us if we execute perfectly, there's too much diversity and options. But nothing is ever perfect and you gotta find a way to win on the days when it's not.

7:31 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Offensive fireworks are great, and I won't turn them away, but if forced to choose, I could live with a dull offense if we could have a defense like '57, '72, '88, etc. Nothing is more fun to watch than an AU defense that won't allow the other team to breathe.

RK...I think calling Gustav unproven at this level is a little harsh. He needs more refinement and he's certainly not the architect of the country's most unstoppable offense (yet), but he did have some good results last year against good teams. Not sure anybody did as well against Bama's defense as we did. Did some really nice things agaisnt a good Tennessee defense and a good Ole Miss defense as well.

So he's proven this offense works in the SEC. It's all about consistency now.

THT,

I'm a defensive guy as well. I'd much rather watch a D just not give anything than watch an offense roll up 50...well unless we have a D that gives up nothing and an offens that rolls up 50 at the same time.

e-bro,

Maybe it was a little harsh, but I'm still not sold. I can quickly be convinced. I think his scheme on paper is great and one that is hard to stop. His in-game play calling is more where my concern lies.

8:32 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I'm gonna be with RK on this one. A defense that allows less than 5 points a game, and doesn't let an opposing offense cross the 50 until somethime in the middle of the 4th quarter AND an offense that can literally score when it decides it wants to score.

As for FENG and Feng land, some parts pretty, some parts not so nice... so I've heard.

All on this unspectacular offer Time Life (or some random girl named Cindy in 2002) Music brings you the following gems together on one CD for the 1st time ever. (I had to look the artists up on this)

All by O-Town

Crash & burn by Savage Garden

Sometimes by Britney Spears

Bottom of My Broken Heart by Britney Spears

This time Around by Hansen

Nobody Knows it but Me by Kevin Sharp

I Wanna Be with You by Mandy Moore

Crush by Dave Matthews Band (this would be the only one that I actually have on CD)

That's the short list...

There you have it, 16 songs of pure crap and one DMB song all on one CD and it can be yours if you act now.

Send $17.99 plus postage and handling to my front door, dig through my garabage and find the CD-R with random hearts drawn on it and it can be yours.

Be the first customer within the next 2 hours and I'll throw in lunch at your cost.

werk - I don't recognize a single song and a couple of the "artists" aren't familiar to me either.

I've probably mentioned it here previously but that CD reminds me. 10 years or so ago, within one year I took my daughter and one of her friends to see their first concert. The first one we saw was Britney Spears and the second was NSync. Each was absolutely awful coming from a dude who's attended more concerts than I can count. But the little girls loved them. I did really enjoy watching the people there. Had I been a 20-something single guy, either one of those concerts would have absolutely been THE place to be. There was some definite talent on display. I got a particular kick out of watching a young couple sitting next to me at one of them. These two boys seemed destined to be hair stylists, interior decorators or maybe something working with flowers. They were hugely entertaining to watch.

8:58 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

RK...I agree he still has more to prove and we're in agreement about his in-game management and play calling. Like I said, just a little more refinement.

He's shown he can mix it up with the big boys, just needs to learn to keep the throttle down.

Blogger wtc said...

Back to football:
My concern with Gus last year was that he became predictable in certain situations. If AU got 5-6 yards on 1st down, the offense would line right back up and run a dive play up the middle. By about game 4 or 5, the announcers were even saying something about it. AU did it ALL SEASON long. Defenses eventually lined up quickly and stopped that play. That put AU in a hole with 3rd down. One of several reasons AU had a large number of 3 and outs. And to make it worse, AU would only take 50 seconds to run the 3 plays. I would have preferred a pass play on 2nd down. At least if it was incomplete, the clock stopped and the O could take a breather and the D could take a breather also.

10:20 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

But thats part of the system wtc - no one's supposed to get a breather. However, I remember everyone talking about the dive play on 2nd. Maybe it takes effect in the 2nd quarter after the defense gets tired of trying to get to the line so much.

10:39 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I also remember someone saying that when they were at the Tulsa bowl game before Gus came here, they could tell what kind of play was going to be run by the big board they used.

Not sure if that was in issue last year either, just sayin there may be a lot of things that we've yet to see.

Do not question Gus. In Gus we trust.

He is not nearly as predictable as some coaches we have had in the past. Remember when we ran the run, run, pass, punt offense?

Or how about that great guy in the early 90s who loved the shotgun. Eventually a few clever individuals caught on that if we were in the shotgun we would pass and if we were in the I, we would run.

Gus is the man. Appreciate him while we have him.

The only SEC team I felt we greatly wore down other than our on defense was Tennessee.

11:47 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The up tempo offense slowed down quite a bit in the second half of the season. We did see some of it in the Iron Bowl, but in general, I think we were trying to protect the defense later in the season.

11:58 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Last year we needed the offense to be a bit slower just to save our own defense. However the 3 and outs with some predictible play calling really wore out our on D last year.

Hopefully with more depth on D this year we can open up the O a bit more.

11:59 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am excited about seeing how many of these incoming freshmen end up getting playing time, particularly the linebackers.

Also, Eguae should be interesting. The coaches sounded excited about him last season. He could end up being a playmaker at DE.

12:14 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

me too SFC. i wanna see Nosa!

12:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Defensively, last year was very disappointing. In 2007 and 2008 we had some of the better defenses we have had. The lack of offense really hurt them, particularly in 2008. Hopefully this season we will get enough depth that we will be good to go.

If we score a lot, hopefully that will mean playing time for some of these younger players. We need to develop some experience for the 2011 team. We have about 24 players that will run out of eligibility this season. That is the most I can remember in a long time.

12:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I really shouldn't bash last years defense that much. After all, when is the last time we gave up over 600 yards of offense in a game and won. That 2009 team didn't have depth, but those guys had a lot of heart.

12:26 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Huge heart in that defense, especially with the leaders. And with the depth coming on, they may not know what to do with themselves not having to play every down. But I'm sure they'll figure out something.

1:10 PM
Blogger wtc said...

TommyD-I agree it is part of the process to wear down the defense, but telegraphing that 2nd down after a big gainer on 1st is a dive play is not any way to run the offense. how about lining up quickly and throwing a slant route, deep route, sweep, anything but the same play each time.
Don't get me wrong. i am fine with gus's style of offense. I like points on the board. Most of the time, if you outscore your opponent you will win. I just don't want to make it easier for the defense to figure out what you
are doing.

1:36 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

wtc - my sentiments exactly

1:39 PM
Blogger IV said...

In my opinion, last year the offense had to do what it could to help preserve the defense. I think you saw that a great deal in the Outback Bowl, thus triple overtime in a game against a team that we were overall much better than. I think that this year will be a lot different due mostly because of Cam Newton, better receiver play and depth at linebacker. I think that Gus had his foot on the brake for much of the time last season and for good reason. I know one thing, I am ready for some FOOTBALL. Bring it on.

1:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

"Most of the time, if you outscore your opponent you will win."

Any game in which we outscore the opponent a lose, the head coach should be fired.

As for Cam, we shall season. There are a lot of similarities between him and Kodi. Cam was a five star on rivals. Kodi was a five star on scout. I am counting on the fact that Cam will have Malzahn to bring him along. Kodi kind of got thrown to the wolves before he was ready.

2:22 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Cam has about half a foot on Kodi in size, so that helps.

I have read where it hasn't been made definite yet, but it should be the 3rd, 4th, or 5th.

WTC ...

I concur. We either ran on 2nd down (after the quick snap)or, when in the opponents' red zone, threw deep to the corner.

Get first downs because that buys you three more plays at least. I would be interested to know how we did on 2nd down last year. I'll bet we weren't very good.

Even with all the 3 and outs we had, recall how many ridiculous 3rd down conversions we had as well.

I've said it before, and I admit it's peculiar ... I prefer an incrementally faster tempo -- get one first down before you mash it.

On the Ladarious Phillips. Cool thing to have an offense that keeps the defense guessing at where the ball may be, and now there's the possibility of something the size of a truck going 50 mph that might have the ball. Cool!

Not a run based offense... riiiiiight.

Blogger Unknown said...

In general, we were bad on short yardage last season. Hopefully Cam and Phillips will have an influence.

In terms of spreading the ball around, it would really help if we have a couple of more receivers step up. I hope to see Benton have a breakout year.

i'm all for Cam following L.Phillips following Ziemba into the secondary. boom-boom-boom!

Blogger E-Bro said...

I think running the dive play on second down works just fine, but only after you've gained a first down.

When it's the second play of the drive, it was worthless, but when we move the chains and get the pace of the offense going, I like the dive play just fine. That's the biggest key to this offense (or was last year): picking up a first down and moving the chains. Once we did that, we were usually cooking with gas.

wrong. we should run it EVERY PLAY!!!!!!!

If it's not Kodi in the wildcat, then I like our short yardage situations a little better.

E-Bro is right. I would like to see our scoring % if we got a first down within the 1st 2 plays of a drive.

72%

I like Kodi going deep out of the wildcat. If unsuccessful to the left then do the same play to the right, that'll fool 'em.

Kodi was great before defenses realized he wasn't going to throw the ball and if he did, it would be a good thing for them. The 2007 MSU game was a great example. He tore them a new one in the first half. In the second half we were doomed. Kodi worked well when he occasionally went in for Cox. As a change of pace, it worked well.

3:32 PM

Eventually Kodi reminded me of a baseball movie where the pitcher called his outfield in, saying, come on in. He ain't swinging.

After looking at several of the youtube videos of Phillips, I'm surprised he didn't have a better alternative waiting for him than Ga Southern if AU didn't come calling. (Not that GA southern is bad, but he's a load. That goal line set up should be pretty fun to see with Eric Smith and maybe Phillips leading the way. I think this is a better video than the one posted on Evan's AL.com story (not just because of the awesome 70's "Bow chicka bow bowwwwwrrr" music that accompanies it.) This dude is a 1 star recruit??

Phillips is kind of one of those in between players. He is fast for a linemen, but a bit too big and runs too straight up for a RB. His size gave him the edge in high school. In college he will likely be good in situations, but he doesn't have the cutting ability or acceleration to be an every down back. Most of the video shows him simply overpowering people. Things will be different in the SEC. Hopefully he gets his size down to the 250 to 260 range and runs less straight up.

4:52 PM
Blogger michael said...

Phillips will be an All American in 2013. 100% sure.

Blogger chip chip said...

i would hope the read option will replace the wildcat to some degree. i would like to see a healthy stallworth or trovon reed as wildcat qb if they are going to run it. we don't want cam getting beat up running in the sec if he does not absolutely have to.

5:19 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

I thought he showed some pretty good speed for a big man, and shows capability to play several different positions. He looks like a good under the radar type player and I am surprised nobody else in the SEC thought him worthy of a spot.

5:26 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i thought his team's uniforms sucked. looks like a slower and less agile brandon jacobs. maybe yox can get him down to 250 by 2011 and turn him into a complete monster.

Wathed CSS football tonight. All panelist thought AU would be very good on offense this year. Question was then asked if going into the IB would there be 2 undefeated teams. The only answer was, you have to stop the other team from scoring. So maybe they are thinking UAt's defense is going to be worse than many in the country are thinking.

10:27 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

that is still a pretty impressive number for northwestern considering they threw 70+ or whatever it was.

10:33 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

AU proved if you can keep ingram and richardson from breaking a big run for a cheap score, they get frustrated and lose confidence and the whole turd offense sputters. not very easy to do, but effective. if AU any kind of pass rush, we win the IB by 14. mcelroy had to be perfect on the final drive and, to his credit, was.

10:36 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

good teams can turn into great ones if you simply have a guy or two on offense that can give you some cheap points and maybe an average or above average d that can generate a score every few games through returns or turnovers deep in the opponent's territory. 14 easy points and an offense that can grind out another 17-21 was the turd's recipe for success in 2009.

AU having such a ridiculously bad punt return game is a real hidden killer. how many time did arenas get the turds out of a hole and a short field?
