Maligned former trainer lands on his feet

Hey everyone. I was surprised today to learn that Tommy Tuberville, now of Texas Tech fame, has hired Arnold Gamber to be his head athletic trainer.

You may recall that Gamber worked at Auburn from 1999-2009. His image was tarnished after allegations surfaced that he played a key role in Chaz Ramsey's physical problems -- or the lack of attention paid to them. That lawsuit remains on track for a February trial.

Evan Woodbery slyly learned in late June that former offensive line coach Hugh Nall has been dropped from the suit. Gamber has not.

Odd choice? I'd say so.

Taking a look at that UT article, it doesn't mention any kind of ruling on Rogers' behavior. I guess a suspension or other penalty is still to come?

Hopefully this will send a message to the rest of those "kids".

The fact that he wasn't suspended makes me think he's gone once one or two questions that he's not answering to his coach get answered by outside people.

It sounds like Dooley is handling it right. Kicking the guy off the team that had gotten in similar trouble makes sense. Also, indefinite suspension is one of my favorite penalties.

Do you think Dooley had to deal with anything like this at La Tech?

The next issue (I hope for his sake) will be the Bryce Brown deal. If he can't reign that kid in, all his prima dona newbies will think they can tell the coach when they show up to practice or not.

What a helluva culture he was dropped into. I'm sure Dooley had an idea of what he was going to have to deal with, I wonder if he expected THIS much.

I thought Bryce Brown left Tennessee.

Cleaning house is something Tennessee seems to really need. I hope they have the patience to let Dooley do what he needs to do.

Chizik didn't have to deal with nearly so bad an environment as Dooley is faced with, but I think Chizik did himself a big favor by getting rid of some players quickly. I don't expect to see nearly as many troubles. When a new coach comes in, some players will test them. Setting some examples will keep other players in line.

Although I found this rather quick after I decided to google:

From USA Today 3/18/10
Running back Bryce Brown left the Tennessee program on the first day of the Volunteers' spring practice, coach Derek Dooley said.

Dooley said Brown told him Thursday that he was dealing with family and personal problems that included "some of the reasons why he came here." Brown was not present for practice.

So I guess the Atlanta radio college football guys don't read, or know something no one else does

It could very well be that he has some growing up to do, which I suspect is the case with Rollison. Hopefully both of them are able to get their heads on straight. These kids don't grasp how quickly you can go from star to has been. It doesn't take long.

SFC ...The "ambassador's" candid style was clearly not suited for the job, but you may have taken his statements out of context.

He used the word "darkies", but was chastising a team for negatively hiring along racial lines. The term may be incorrect, but the statement seems somewhat honorable.

His statement regarding sports groupie women seems intended that he thinks in certain circumstances women throw themselves at sports stars and then claim any kind of foul they can when it doesn't work out how they dreamed. Psychologists have acknowledged this as a behavior syndrome. This will always be a dicey and hard to prove situation from any viewpoint, therefore his statement may once again be wrong for its abruptness, but not necessarily the content.

On the other hand, he's probably a bloated fat cat borne of too much privilege.

11:13 AM

Maybe it is just me and maybe there is some cultural difference that I am not aware of, but any coach in the U.S. that used the word "darkie" to refer to a player would be fired quicker than a Gus Malzahn two minute drill. I can now see why Evans gave Richt such a pass on the poor discipline at UGA. UGA has recruited as well as anyone over the past 10 years. The poor discipline has to be the greatest hindrance to player development. Lack of discipline affects focus, commitment and team unity. Except for the discipline issues, I've been a supporter of Richt. I seem convinced now that Richt doesn't have it in him to correct the problem and will always underachieve with his players.

Fall practice will be exciting. I am still kind of curious about how spring practice ended without a start QB being named, but then a week later they named Newton the starter and said it could change come two-a-days.

From watching the A-Day game, it seemed they intentionally didn't have Newton do a lot, similar to the way they treat other experienced players.

Come two-a-days, I wonder if we will be back to the wide open QB race, or has Cam been the man for much longer than the coaches indicated?

4:58 PM
Blogger Norm said...

So... who's no longer a Brave after July? Personally, I think Escobar and Kamikaze are excellent candidates. Who else?

5:07 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Cam was the man from the moment that his pen finished signing the second "n" in "Newton."

5:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That would seem very likely, Jet, although any player can get beat out. I understand that signing a JUCO means you intend to play him. I am just unsure of how the competition was portrayed. Something seemed strange about it.

I by no means think we have seen anything close to what Cam is capable of doing and I have liked his attitude. The way the coaches have handled this is what hasn't quite made sense to me, but it could just be an effort to not reveal too much too early.

5:52 PM
Blogger Jet said...

If you look back on the A-Day game, he was given basic throws with little options.

Two were deep over the middle throws with no real disguise to them. Others had out and up fakes to help open up receivers.

His deep ball to Carr was a tad underthrown, and the deep one in traffic to Winter, he threw where only Winter could get it and couldn't hang on.

Two others were roll-outs that cut off half the field, and he wasn't allowed to tuck and run. He could have lofted the ball on the rollout, though, instead of the bullet to Winter.

Neither was he allowed to throw the short swing pass that the others had to roll up their stats.

He won't be perfect, but he'll be fine.

6:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

He definitely wasn't given the opportunity to show what he could do at A-Day. Personally, all I really care to see is how he can throw. Having a running QB is a plus, but passing is a must.

I hope we see Cam be very selective when he runs the ball. During blowouts I wouldn't expect to see him run more than a handful of times a game, but it big games he could end up running a dozen times or so.

6:11 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

During blowouts Iwould expect to see Caudle or Trotter

6:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

During blowouts I would love to see Caudle or Trotter, but for some reason Auburn seems to very rarely play the number two QB. It is what screwed Ben Leard over. Craig wasn't coming out of the game no matter what the score. Maybe it will be different this season. Last season I don't think the coaches had much confidence in anyone other than Todd.

6:31 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

I would send Trotter in as #2. Caudle is a constant quantity and would be able to fill in whether he got mop up work or not. Trotter has 2 years ahead of him and probably has more upside to fill in if Cam gets hurt.

I know this logic is akin to managing a bull pen in baseball and is not respecting the senior QB that has certainly paid his dues, but we need to play every card perfectly in order to fully right the ship.

Mr. Caudle will graduate with a great degree in building construction and I'm betting will receive numerous, generous job offers. Like so many before him, he is a good Auburn man and has earned our thanks.

It is interesting to see predictions after the fact. The prediction here for 2009 couldn't have been more wrong.

12:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Steve,

That guys prediction of Auburn finishing 5th in the SEC West and with a losing conference record seemed to be pretty accurate.

We tied with Arkansas at 3-5 for 4th, but they beat us so technically we finished fifth.

2:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, the defense didn't exactly carry the team last season.

2:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As a matter of fact, I believe we were last in the SEC in scoring defense that season.

Not to mention, our offense didn't exactly struggle as he suggested either.

Just because the records happen to be close doesn't indicate he had any clue about how the team would be. He was totally off base.

2:57 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

He seemed to be dead on with the bottom line. You said his prediction couldn't be more wrong. How he got there wasn't right, however unfortunately his prediction of a losing SEC record and finishing 5th couldn't have been more right.

3:35 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I think our offense has a ton of potential for 2010, but I have concerns because as fondly as we remember the 2009 offense, there were some big struggles with consistency last year.

Hopefully year two of Gus' system will bring more consistency and we aren't racking up all of our big numbers in the cake games.

3:38 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think we have a good chance of being as good or better than last season. The one thing on offense that could improve the most would be short yardage. We were horrible in short yardage situations last season.

From what I have read, Ladarius Phillips may be in the equation for short yardage. I read that it was Malzahn that wanted him. I had assumed they got him as a defensive tackle. Apparently that isn't the case.

The last I read Phillips was about 290, but he hopes to get down to about 260 for the season. That is one significant change in mass.

3:53 PM
Blogger CHB said...

SFC, you are spot on about the biggest weakness with the offense. Malzahn tried to be too tricky on 3rd/4th and short. He had Tate who could carry it up the middle.I think that will improve this year. I think we could be in store for one of the more memorable offenses in Auburn history and it could be the best in the nation.

3:58 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, when the reasons you give for your prediction are totally wrong, then the actual accuracy of the prediction is meaningless and is just a result of dumb luck. The guy couldn't have been more wrong. We went from one of the worst offenses in the nation to one of the best. We went from one of the best defenses in the nation to one of the worst.

4:00 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Aside from short yardage, to me this years offense comes down to QB play and the ability to re-adjust once the defense adjusts to what we are doing.

4:01 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Steve,

To continue to beat the dead horse...predictions are about the bottom line results. His prediction on our bottom line result was that we would have a losing record in the SEC and finish 5th. How he got the result was incorrect, but he was dead on in his prediction on how the team would finish...and in the end that's the thing most will remember.

4:02 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

You say the guy couldn't be more wrong. That's fine, however he could have said we'd have a .500 or better record in the SEC and finish 3rd. He could have said we'd go 0-8 in the SEC and finish 6th.

It is possible he could have been more wrong.

4:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, QB consistency will be the biggest thing. I like the options we have at QB this season. Last season we had next to no options and if Todd had a bad day, we just had to live with it.

RB will be the next concern. I don't think Fannin will be as good as Tate in terms of being a straight ahead runner, but he has many things he does well.

4:05 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

His predictions were totally off base. He didn't just pick the final record.

When you figure an 8 game SEC schedule, if there are 8 possible outcomes. If you pick one outcome, as long as it isn't 8-0 or 0-8, you are very likely to be within one game. Predicting a 2-6 SEC record based upon incorrect assumptions means that it was just a wild guess that pretty much anyone could have made by looking at the previous seasons record and knowing nothing about the team.

4:09 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Ok Steve, I give in. You win. This guy had nothing at all correct about his prediction. Nothing, there wasn't an ounce of truth to be found no where in his prediction. Even the final part when he predicted the result for the season was all wrong.

Next topic please.

Although I think the Cleveland owner was out of line and a big crybaby, this is ridiculous. This is one of the main reasons there is still racism. You have people like Jesse Jackson calling racism for any and everything. He is basically an "ambulance chaser".

I am hoping to see Dyer make a significant impact, but Fannin can do so many things it will be hard for Dyer to get a lot of carries. It would be great to see him get 500 or 600 yards his first season.

If Dyer gets 500-600 yds as a true freshman, I consider that a breakout season. If Fannin is the AU starting RB he should get at least 1000 yds and that wouldn't be breakout to me.

Bynes and Smith are good LBs and should be better this year with another offseason to train and some gametime relief. We'll have a lot of folks to rotate at the 3rd spot and to substitute. We'll be better at LB than last year.

If Etheridge/Savage both make it back, we'll have a lot of solid talent. No Carlos Rogers type talent, but we be easily be better than last year.

DL ..We need Fairly and Clayton need to step up to plug the middle.

DE ..We got good folks and many newbies to substitute. Probably weaker here than last year.

The statues outside the stadium are smarter than at least 1/2 of the fan base, so of course the elephant has at least 3/4th of them trumped.

6:45 AM

That kind of brings to mind a question which periodically runs through my mind. Before the question, a little background. My parents were not sports fans so I have no boyhood memories of watching games with my dad. I came to love AU sports on my own after years of evaluating the two fan bases. I never attended a single class at AU but, I do have both a high school and a college diploma. I've also been to the AU campus for games or some other reason more times than I can remember.

So my question is this, do you think UAT has proportionally more or less fans who did not graduate either high school, college or both than other schools (they're fans because their daddy was a fan)? I know every school has them, and I'm not knocking anyone without a degree, I'm just curious what observations others may have made along these lines.

I am certain there's a knuckle dragging puddle that splashed out of the gene pool in each of the sovereign states (particularly those states that may have had some unpleasantness 150 years ago) that is poorly educated, lacking in social graces and inherently attracted to distant relatives that attaches itself to the "state university," particularly in the states where such university has attained a measure of success. This is because of the lack of achievement and lack of upward mobility of those in that puddle. The concentration of such is found at its highest levels in our state, but is also found at elevated levels in Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. It is also found in northern states such as Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, (not surprisingly) Iowa and Nebraska.

But nothing like the shame of Bartholomew Coolwatz, my plumber in Eurasia. That guy was unscrewing a pipe at my house, and he had forgotten to plug the snarfel line, so all of a sudden acid started shooting out of the pipe into his face. He is badly disfigured.

8:43 AM
Blogger michael said...

Some of my opponents claimed this was proof that my "Acid in Every House" initiative was a bad idea, since there was an accident even in the King's house. These opponents no longer exist.

8:44 AM
Blogger michael said...

And I must say that as long as you properly take the 113 steps to plug the snarfel line, dealing with your acid pipes is as safe as can be. As long as they haven't been installed more than 6 months ago.

8:45 AM
Blogger michael said...

Old Bartholomew sure looks like a freak now, that is something we can all agree on. I have tried to convince him to become a crime fighter with that freakish face of his, but he insists that he would rather be a plumber. I just think his face is hurting his business. It wouldn't hurt business nearly as bad if he was a crime fighter. It would help business, because he looks like a scary freak.

8:47 AM

I can't blame ol' Bart for not wanting to get shot. I bet he can recite those 113 steps from memory now, unless, of course, he's a closet acidophile.
