Shakeup at Vanderbilt
Hey everyone. As some of the techno-savvy HOTTIES have been discussing, Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson has resigned.
The Tennesseean, a Gannett newspaper that apparently uses unnamed sources, is crediting the information to unnamed sources.
Press conference at 1 p.m. CDT.
I will be inside Auburn Arena at that time. Please feel free to update in the comments section until I return.

He's one wild and crazy guy.
this is surprising substance
He's got happy feet.
Scandy vandal.
That's funny WERK. He's the spitting image, in that pic especially.
i did't know Vandy had scandals
Homer - if the other Gannet rags use unnamed sources, is it the MA policy or yours personally which prevents you from doing the same? No complaint, just curious. Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.
I'm surprised at the Vandy development and rather pleased with the Braves' pickup. Glad Escobar is being replaced with someone that has his head screwed on straight. I don't think the Braves lose anything defensively and definitely gain offensively.
touring new Auburn Arena or hastily called Vandy presser.
Yep, I'd be in the Arena, too! Can't wait to see your video, JGT...although I suspect I'll have to since I'll prolly be on the road when you post it.
What a jerk.
This is kind of shocking, yet ironic. I have been thinking Les Miles would be the next SEC coach to go. I never even considered Johnson leaving, even with a 2-10 record.
Is it coincidence that JGT is being sequestered to The Arena while all this Bobby Johnson stuff is happening?
Oh, this is the best pizza in a cup ever.
mytommyd,
I figure the Braves line up will look like this.
Prado
Heyward
Jones
Glaus (McCann 4th vs RHP)
McCann (Glaus 5th vs RHP)
Gonzalez
Cabrera/Diaz
Infante/Blanco
I would have it more like
Prado
Infante/Blanco
McCann
Glaus
Jones
Heyward
Gonzalez
Cabrera/Diaz
Norm, I'd think that would be the policy of any journalist worth their salt.
The company most likely has only one concern - moolah.
Maybe Johnson got a better offer from a trucking company in Georgia?
Let me be the first to say.....Gus to Vandy..
:-P
You wish.
:)
Without an athletic director, who selects the Vandy coach?
this is very odd.
something really bad had to have happened.
I like all of those line ups RK
yup, saw the Gonzalez/Escobar trade while i was at lunch on Sportscenter. works for me.
Scottie,
I'm going to the Braves/Brewers game on Friday, I'll make sure I'll welcome him to the team for you.
much appreciated RK.
ehyou - agreed, it just seemed a bit curious to me. On a separate note...DIE GAS PUMPER!
Now Kamikaze just needs to wear some other team's uniform.
ScoCho, I too like the Chattooga. I went during a drought so I hear it's actually much better than what I experienced. I enjoyed the big 7is foot drop off and banging my head on a giant rock. It was then cool to climb in the rocks and jump in the rapids.
I think Gus will be a candidate next year when Vandy hires a replacement.
I know I will get blasted for this, but I think Braves talk should be on a separate blog with soccer the cycling.
soccer and cycling
Blasting
I assure you, once we're all up in the football talk, I for one will rarely discuss the Braves. I've never rafted over any rapids so I can't talk about that one. So pfft. That's all I have to say about that, I'll let someone else blast you if they so wish.
Then so should rafting.
Zing.
I agree, CH=B... unless of course we want to talk about The Great Felipe Alou!
Of course, if one of JayG's suggested new blog formats (the one with separate discussion boards) ever gets the go ahead, I guess we'll have a separate spot for such tangential (is this a word?) talk.
actually, if the Hotties did tell me about the Braves, I wouldn't know diddly squat about the current team.
^ n't
I'll still talk non-football stuff on the football board. That's how I roll.
ehyou's a maverick, he's a wild man.
the Braves host the Brewers starting tomorrow to kick off the 2nd half. Jurrjens on the hill.
I guess we can discuss non-football topics here, but we should at least define the impact such topics have on the BC coaching situation.
I think Tommy Hansen is the starter on Friday when I'm there.
I don't care what you or anyone else say; I am absolutely, positively not at all certain that the BC coaching situation did not have something to to with the VU coaching situation.
Norm,
I concur.
I'm glad you do. I feel 100% somewhat strongly and relatively committed to that position and I'd be prepared to fight anyone who says differently. I mean, if I could fit it into my schedule that is, I'm pretty busy.
I like Hansen, but that delivery looks like future arm problems to me. I hope I'm wrong.
ehyou - I must take another strong position here. Please refrain from mentioning teenage pop groups here. I don't care if you like them you sick, twisted perv, just don't tell me about it.
Mmmmm Bop
well, that's one song I didn't really want stuck in my head.
Listening to the Bobby Johnson thing - its a retirement, not a health concern, he's 59 and wants to retire.
mytd...
If that's true, the timing is bizarre.
He hasn't talked to the team yet, but obviously they know now.
I've been wanting to do that since I got out of college
Yeah, listening to him, I got a feeling there is something else here. Not sure what it is, but it feels like he's not saying something.
But that could very well be me trying to read something into it
He doesn't mind leaving right now, because he feels he's leaving the team with the most talent that they've had since he's been there.
Not planning to be an athletic director
In the long run, may move back to South Carolina where his family is.
The timing is just whack on this if it's just a matter of being ready to step away.
"Coaching staff has been winners wherever they've been"
Just wanting to retire makes absolutely no sense. Health issues would make sense, but apparently that isn't it.
Coaches don't retire this close to the start of a season. It is screwing their team over.
There has to be something more here, but it may be a personal matter he doesn't want to deal with in the press.
"This is going to be the last place I coach" said to his recruits
Effective at the end of July
Interim coach is Robby Caldwell
This feels too much like Cartman saying "Screw you guys. I'm going home".
mytommyd = live blogger extraordinarire
Live blogger on a Vandy press conference. Yeah boy, get some!
MrCFB says "Bobby Johnson sounded like a man who finally decided that it was better to leave a year too early rather than a year too late".
Vandy & Bobby Johnson probably wouldn't be in this situation if mytommyd had been live blogging the BC coaching situation a few years ago.
"This is a personal decision and will not be coaching the Commodores in 2010"
recapping on the radio
If I only knew what the ramifications were way back then
The previous note was about live blogging not from the Bobby J conference
I'm still disgusted that we lost to these guys 2 years ago.
I actually like the random blogging that goes on here. It's mostly Auburn with other crap thrown in. I'm to blame as well. I worry that with a new blog (with multiple topics) we won't be able to have the continuity we have here. How will we know which topic everyone is on?
CH=B - go wash your mouth out with soap. PRONTO.
or just delete the word "other" from your last post.
CHB, in Jay we trust.
Now is the time for Tony Franklin to step up to the next level and become the Vandy head coach. Franklin, the Bob Dylan of college coaches, would bring a side to Vandy that nobody has seen before.
So, I understand that "there is no good time to retire from the game", but there are some better times than others. And a week before football "starts" seems strange. He did express some frustration when recounting that there were 20 something games that they lost by 7 points or less. But that's the only frustration he mentioned
You know Mike Leach is still looking for a job, too
SFC, you are correct no worries with G in charge.
Been reading/hearing rumors that the walmartians are going to suspend Dre Kirkpatrick for the year. If that is true they will be hurting on D. I know they have talent but they also lost a ton. I think they only return 2 starters as they sit now.
Oh, Mike Leach would be interesting.
I can see why Johnson would be frustrated. The he recruited the highest ranked recruit in school history and the guy gets shot dead before he plays. Talking about bad luck, that is Vandy.
Mike Leach is actually a very interesting prospect. He is very well educated, if I remember correctly.
Two days in a row of Tony Franklin...geez.
Leach to Vandy? That would be weird having two lawyers coaching the SEC schools in TN.
And Leach wouldn't have a problem getting along with the AD at Vandy.
he could even have his own pirate ship on the Cumberland River (or anywhere else in Nashville if it rains again like it did this spring)
Maybe I should brush up my resume and turn it into Vandy. As long as I don't use the word schmootball in the interview, I might have a shot.
BEASLEY!!!
The former BC coach would be the current BC coach if he had had a BEASLEY!!!
How could this not be Johnson's last coaching stop? No AD in their right mind would hire a coach that would "retire" 2 weeks before the start of fall camp.
Mike Leach is one of the more entertaining coaches in football.
Coach Leach, you are fired.
Leach: Really?
Yea, really.
Leach: I'll sue.
Really?
Leach: Yea, really.
You are still fired.
Leach: Really?
Yea, really.
Leach: But I am the bestest coach ever.
You are still fired.
Leach: But we are going to a bowl game.
You are still fired.
Leach: But I am a lawyer.
You are still fired.
Leach: But but but
You are still fired.
I guess that's part of the beauty of not having an AD to answer to.
what about Furman? They ain't looking now, but I think their AD would put Bobby Johnson at the top of his list, regardless of today's weirdness.
Leach in the SEC would be a hoot. At least Vandy would be interesting.
Leach in the PAC 10+2+? has the chance to ignite fireworks. Imagine Kiffen, Neuhousel and Leach all throwing soundbites around.
Leach may be a fruitcake, but he was wrongly fired and will easily get a huge settlement or win the lawsuit.
Anyone wanna bet differently?
I agree Hoopie, he has a strong case that he was wrongfully terminated and TTU's recent hire only helps their case.
Come on. Leach made plenty of comments that embarrassed the university. That is enough to get him canned right off the bat.
Where is Gerry DiNardo when you need him?
I concur.
what about Widenhofer?
Woody Ball. Have fun. Expect to win.
Woody is a great guy, bad head coach, but great guy.
Peeps:
Just returned from Auburn Arena.
Will begin posting pics as soon as possible.
RK, i had a cup from a Vandy football game on it years back & that was the slogan it had on it. it always made me laugh.
Ewwww - I hope they had a good time, Woody ball went 15-40 in his 5 years there.
Coaching Vandy isn't exactly a great gig. If I coach went in there and consistently had winning seasons, they would name the stadium after him.
I think it's important to tell you that no mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller.
scottie...
So you're saying you have a game-used cup?
SNORT!
that's HAWT.
technically, it is a game-used drinking cup from a Tennessee Oilers (Titans) pre-season game at Vanderbilt stadium from 1996. :)
I just read where Bonomonomonlo has been cleared. I didn't realize that. Pretty cool.
Someone had a big coke problem with all the snorting that used to go on in here.
Maybe it was a DEA enforced ban.
Johnson missed his opportunity. He could have waited a week and announced his retirement at media days.
Wait a second.
Out of nowhere Jay G. says he is "touring the new arena" and it just happens to be at the same time out of nowhere Bobby Johnson steps down at Vandy.
A week or so ago, Jay G went up to Louisville. On the way to Louisville is Nashville.
Are these all coincidences?
I think not WERK
New thread UPZ.
