Getting Our Bearings

Hey everyone. So as you have surmised, I was asked (politely) to make Wednesday my last day of work at the Advertiser. Nobody should be upset with the Advertiser; they are keeping to their word and sending me on my way with what they agreed to give me. No hard feelings.

I am hopeful that Brian Woodham, who recently left a part-time gig with ITAT to take a full-time job as a copy editor at the Advertiser, will be given an opportunity to take my old job. Brian would be a great addition. I'll let you know if I hear anything about that.

As I explained on Facebook, we will have a board at AuburnSports.com with a stricter standard when it comes to cussing and any off-putting shenanigans. Personally, I'm good with the Bunker and have read it for a long time. They get a little upset when things don't go well, which is understandable, but I feel like that board's reputation for savage commentary far exceeds reality.

With that said, we will have a HABOTN-esque board over there for people whose tolerance for cussing is at zero. Just want to make that clear.

I'll be starting at AuburnSports.com on Monday.

Take care, errybody. Thanks as always for your support!

However, based on several past hires, my lack of knowledge shouldn't eliminate me from the pool of candidates for AU DC.

11:35 PM
Blogger michael said...

But THT... even if you don't know a single thing about defensive coordinating, you still have to say YES to get the job. You think Loeffler admitted he didn't know anything about offensive coordinating in his interview? No, he said he knew Tom Brady and a lot about coordinating. That's how he got the job!

You know, Steele might not have the resume of a Will Muschamp, Ellis Johnson, Ted Roof, or Brian Vangorder, but we stole him from LSU, so that makes it a good hire in my book. Just remember how fun it was to steal him when we are all mad at him in the near future and he gets fired.

This is apparently the anniversary of some guy named Cam Newton committing to Auburn.

http://jaygtate.blogspot.com/2009/12/newton-delays-his-decision.html

http://jaygtate.blogspot.com/2009/12/cameron-newton-commits.html

For the record, API thought signing Newton was a bad idea. wtc was bothered by the dad's involving himself so much in the recruitment. SFC was OK signing him because Chizik was so good at discipline. SFC also unironically said a point was "mute."

Bammer mark said Newton was a gamechanger.mjt predicted a national championship if Newton signed. Nova was levelheaded, saying he looked Tebowesque but warned us not to go overboard with predictions. Kathy was excited about how big Newton was. SFC said the commitment was incredible (even moreso that Trovon Reed!). ebro was worried by JUCO QBs. Seemed to like guys who had been in the system awhile.

THT said he would soil himself if we got Lemonier. That must have been an interesting signing day for him. CHB praised Michael Dyer's leadership abilities.

bubbs jr. is meat eater. He's a fan of any animal you'll put on his plate. Which kinda stinks for him because we're pretty low on the meat consumption end of the spectrum as a household. But I digress.

The other night, at dinner, we were asking him if he liked to eat various types of animals. Some he's had (cow, pig, deer etc), and some he has not (snake, horse etc). When I asked him if he'd eat dog, his response was classic. "Yeah, I eat dog meat. I like hot dogs." All these years, he thought he was eating Fido, and no regrets.

10:41 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

as long as there are cows and chickens and fish and pigs, I won't have a desire or need to eat other meats. I could eat MrsTHT's curry chicken on rice every day. Not getting a rice cooker 30 years ago is one of our biggest mistakes. We didn't learn that until 2.0 brought one home a few years ago.

when I was in the Air Force we had a 2 day "survival" course. Some adventuresome types caught and cooked an armadillo and a snake. I nibbled on the denser-than-osmium cereal and chocolate bars we were given. When we got back to base, I showere...twice... and then drove very fast to this place. That was the first time I ever ate the skin of a baked potato.

Fun fact: In certain regions armadillos used to be referred to as "Hoover Hogs," because they were commonly eaten during the depression (which the whole depression being pinned on Hoover is a discussion in and of itself - but whatever). map dealers are weird. They sometimes ask me for help researching Georgia or NC maps (or the mapmakers). When I state that I wish I could do map research every day, they invariably reply that they'd like a week or two where they didn't have to look at maps. Is that not the most absurd thing you've ever heard!

I have lots of wonderful pre-Google memories, even pre-WebCrawler memories, but I have no recollection of how, in the pre-internet days, I found out what on earth people were talking about.

Making sure you understand why I referenced Dora: http://dora.wikia.com/wiki/Map

Anyone with kids of that age, will recognize the "map song."

Hence, you feel like Dora with your best friend the map; you two just sitting there chatting over the keyboard.

Hey bubbs, why did we domesticate stuff then? And how can anyone really know? It's not like we have blogger comment sections from way back then where smart people talk about why stuff happens.

@MJT

There are six criteria he comes up with in the book (must meet all 6):
- Not picky/expensive eater
- Docile
- Grows quick
- Reproduce in captivity
- No strong tendency to panic (or have flocking mechanism/can herd)
- Conform to social hierarchy (recognize a human as the boss)

He does make a distinction between "tamed" and "domesticated." There are animals that can be tamed (cheetah), but for various reasons aren't domesticated (cheetah wont reproduce in captivity).

4:35 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I realize that wasn't a real question by MJT, but I felt I needed to get that in blogger comment form, so stupid people like him wouldn't question facts a couple thousand years from now.

I'm gonna keep making mistakes and deleting them so we can get to a page flip sooner.

It was a real question bubbs. Seems like some pretty reasonable requirements for domestication.

You know who was never domesticated nor tamed?

New Mexico State: hired former BC head coach Frank Spaziani as defensive coordinator. Spaz agreed to a two year deal at $150,000 per.
I'm sure there's a youtube video of him signing his contract while kegstanding from a barrel of humility.

Boston College: sources tell us BC is close to naming Scot(t) Loeffler as offensive coordinator.

yessirree, it's time to talk about the BC coaching situation.

It sucks pretty bad knowing that we'll start the season with a loss this year. I don't like being in someone else's bag.

9:29 AM
Blogger michael said...

Oh give me a break. We've seen this before, most recently with Ohio State this year. "They are so young, look at who's returning, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah bla hasdfh asdfhi asdfgh aseghiaeghi aegihaegij "

They will have an entire offseason of being told they are the greatest, that the champeenship is theirs for the taking, and they'll sit around reading the articles about how great they are, and they'll eat hostess cupcakes and forget to pump irons, and they won't study film, and they'll get jealous of each other depending on who is getting the most preseason love, and so on.

And Auburn will come in hungry and unintimidated. We got a bunch of 4 and 5 star athletes, a new mobile QB, and some perfectly-adequate-for-the-most-part coaching, and we ain't been on one "too early" Top 25. We gonna come out and take those crack tigers to the woodshed.

Maybe not that catastrophically bad bubbs... thinking more 2014 Auburn. You know, back when the defense was improving and Nick Marshall was now an elite thrower and they added Duke Williams and after all Auburn was only 13 seconds away just a few months earlier...

12:35 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

The only thing I don't like about your comparison is the fact that we played reasonably well at the beginning of 2014.

13 seconds. 13 years ... same thing, right?

12:48 PM
Blogger michael said...

Right, I'm not saying Clemson will be a trainwreck, just saying they will have 2 to 4 losses next year. Mark it, Dude.

My initial comparison, Ohio State, was far from a trainwreck this year, yet the narrative the entire season was, "What the heck's up with Ohio State???" due to the huge expectations. That's Clemson next year, and they are about to run into a hungry Auburn team that is going to run through college football like a hot knife through butter.

1:10 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Ohio State is probably the best comparison. I could see their season going that way. The fact of the matter is, it's hard to make it all the way through a college football season without a couple losses. There's a good deal of "luck" involved in making it to/winning the championship.

I'm still holding out for a slew of injuries to both Clemson/bammer in the spring.

1:32 PM
Blogger THT said...

non-abbreviated Tar Heel Tiger may disagree, but I see 3-9 next year with wins against LAMO née NELA née OPJC, Vandy, and AAM.

Some of the guys in Vegas say we share the same odds as Washington State for winning the natty next year (80:1). I thought that was pretty generous of them.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14559236/carolina-panthers-quarterback-cam-newton-unlike-qb-nfl

quote:

"The 13-month probe ended with the NCAA finding no violations, but that didn't stop NFL teams from sending private investigators to Auburn to speak to food service workers, frat boys and sorority girls. They spoke to bartenders, even though Newton has never touched alcohol. "The worst thing they found?" Whitfield says. "Sometimes he rode his scooter without a helmet." "

I think the exact quote in the NCAA report was "rode his scooter without a helmet like a god."

He also drove and parked that bleepedy-bleep scooter on the sidewalks. He's just so smug.

10:57 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

To be fair, I don't think he's going to make it in the NFL anyway. Up to this point, he's just been a system player that's gotten lucky with his team in the NFL.

I consider this event prophetic. Wonder who our new trash can will be at the end of next season.

9:04 AM
Blogger Norm said...

What does that even mean?

9:38 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

We'll be a dumpster fire by end of next season and hiring a new coach.

We'd be wise to go after Chip Kelly.

10:03 AM
Blogger michael said...

Haha, good one bubbs. You know he's not an Auburn Man!

10:32 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Chip or Shula?

Shula did more for our program while coaching bammer than Barfield ever did while coaching AU.

10:39 AM
Blogger michael said...

No, Shula is definitely an honorary Auburn Man. I am talking about Chip, who I am willing to bet doesn't even have the Auburn Creed memorized.

10:40 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

On the upside, if we hired him, he could claim half a natty at AU. So there's that.

Plus, he has this whole next season to study up on the creed.

11:35 AM
Blogger michael said...

Yeah, like he'd have time to learn the creed while also learning the Alma Mater.

11:57 AM
