They should have had a mime on Star Trek Next Generation. If they used the computer to translate his movements into audible speech, would that be a violation of the mime directive.

somebody from NC magazine wants to get together in a few weeks to talk about maps. Someone should warn him that there is no off switch.

I was thinking this morning about how the 4 Enterprise captains would have responded to a mime on their crew.
I think Kirk would have just laughed at it. Janeway would have coddled it. The guy who's on NCIS New Orleans would have quickly learned to just ignore it. But Picard? That would have been awesome. I can just see the frustration building into a hilarious outburst. SHUT UP, MIME!

All your Star Trek talk has clearly left bubbs and Ebro feeling left out.

Speaking of bad birthdays, a few weeks ago my 12 yr old's "love interest" lacerated his pancreas (which is pretty hard to do) the day before his birthday while playing chase with my girls and his brother. He apparently fell from high on a tree house and hit his stomach on a step ladder to the monkey bars or something. They were worried it would be permanently damaged and he'd be diabetic. He was in bed in a hospital in bham for a week and couldn't eat or drink anything (they originally said a month, but he got better enough after a week).

When he got hurt, he was whining about how bad his stomach hurt and stuff, and his parents, like any good parents, were like "suck it up!" They didn't take him to a dr until later that night. They took him to an urgent care and they were like, "Uhhh take him to the ER!" Apparently the whole thing was life threatening. So they felt pretty bad for that. And it made me feel better for all the time we've taken our kids to the ER and 4 hrs later the doctor is like, "yeah they're fine"

It possible for it to be raining and sunny at the same time. Surprised you didn't know that.

11:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The rest of my family thinks I'm incapable of taking care of myself. I'm getting hungry, and to prove them wrong, I'm going to let one of y'all bring me a Philly cheesesteak from Pat's. Heck, I'll settle for one from Chili's.

12:00 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think you accidentally got those reversed. You don't "settle" for an original, THT. Everybody knows that.

12:05 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I've gotten pretty good at injury assessment, MJT.

I think your daughter's BF's parents need to simmer a little bit. Who among us didn't lacerate their pancreas a time or two when they were growing up? It's not that big of a deal. A few days in bed and the old body repairs itself. No fuss needed. Besides, given the statistics, that kid will probably end up with diabetes anyway. Why not get started early when he's young and it's easy to get used to things like that? Seems pretty smart to me. Heck, I might go lacerate some pancreases when I get home tonight.

12:11 PM
Blogger michael said...

When it's sunny and raining that mean's the devil is spanking his wife. If you called it something different then you're wrong.

THT, will you ever end your running gag where you act like some guy named Pat makes a better Philly than Chili's?

And bubbs, you couldn't lacerate your pancreas even if you tried. You don't even know where one is. you'd probably hit the spleen instead, lol.

12:17 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Oh yeah?! Watch this!

12:20 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

We said the devil was beating his wife. I'm calling that close enough. Helps that we grew up in the same area. Although they get it right in Hungary too.

12:22 PM
Blogger michael said...

Yeah, basically the same thing. My momma and grandmother said "spanking" and it always struck me as funny, so I'm sticking with it. I haven't heard anyone outside of them use that exact wording.

My dad was a Yankee so he didn't have anything entertaining to say about it.

Another from my mom's side was saying God was moving his sofa after a loud thunder.

12:48 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think this particular rain cloud was only about 20 feet above the ground. Thankfully, that movie is over and I turned off the tv before the next awful one started.

Someone sent me an email that included the photo of a "person of interest" the police were seeking to question regarding the fire that collapsed I-85. The image was of Wm T Sherman.

I outfoxed the birthday curse and went ahead and climbed the 12 foot ladder to replace some outdoor light bulbs instead of waiting til this weekend. You ever wonder why there's 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon? Most measurements end up being easily dividable by 2 down to the next unit. Do people who use the metric system have to have a scale to measure (by weight) when baking?

Also, what's up with the "tea" and "table" jazz? Did we really need a smaller spoon to stir tea with? How long have those measurements been around? How long has tea been a thing in the western world?

On the other hand, THT, you had 17 minutes after your 3887 to not let bubbs ruin things, and you fell asleep at the wheel. Shame on you.

But there is yet another bummer: every one of the last 10 posts has been a 3BEASLEY!!!x post. Those sorts of runs only happen every thousand posts. And we all wasted them. Just flat out wasted them. Sad!

1:09 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Looks like it's wearing off, THT. You need to freshen things up on MJT.

1:31 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

first map titled Carolina

The first map to name Carolina was a large map of North America, published one year before the little Horne map. Only one known copy; it's in the NYPL.

2:56 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I dunno. I think I could make a map about like that. But it is old and has animal drawings ... I'd follow the bidding up to about $20. Any higher then, frankly, I think you're getting robbed.

3:08 PM
Blogger michael said...

THT, why don't you just print the map off that website for yourself? That's just like $.10 a page give or take. Free if you do it at work.

4:07 PM
Blogger THT said...

I actually have a high resolution scan of that very map. It was very briefly in my house about 12 years ago. I couldn't afford it but the local rare book dealer let me bring it home and scan it. He then sold it to the California map dealer who then sold it to a fellow in Charlotte where I assume it still is. Too bad the Charlotte guy didn't know the book dealer. He paid the map dealer almost double what the book dealer sold it for.

4:41 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Too bad you didn't buy it from the book guy, and sell it to the Charlotte guy for double. Doubling your money over a 12 year period is solid.

I'm a little shocked you weren't aware of this, THT. You should start running all money decisions by us before doing (or not doing) anything.

4:55 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Too bad I didn't know the Charlotte guy. However comma if I had had the money to buy it in the first place, I would not have sold it.

Did anyone watch the A-Day game? I was not at home and it didn't find its way to the DVR. Are we going to go 15-0 this year? I hope the preseason pollsters don't buy into all the hype.

8:04 AM

THT, the reason you don't have money to buy that map is because you have never used your map skillz for profit like you should have been doing. You gotta buy and sell a few maps to keep a few maps, man.

MrsTHT absolutely prohibits me from turning passion into career. She has well documented proof that I am incapable of doing that. Of course, that was before I watch your 12 part series.... btw, what's a cassette tape?*

Thanks, michael, rescinsion...rescindignation...whatever is not necessary.

*Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Waters was the first cassette tape I purchased. I think The James Gang Rides Again was the next, then a bunch of Elton John and Alice Cooper.

After all the great anticipation of a skate party (thanks for the hype, bubbs), there was nothing of the sort! However, I had something even better. 2.0 made me a lemon pie with homemade graham cracker crust. No, of course it does not have meringue or whipped cream on it. That's disgusting!

I'm rat cheer, bubbs. Extremely busy day at Buy More Central, on top of a late night of hockey.

That depth chart is all wrong. Everyone knows Cowart will be a first string all american this year.

wow, did I just get pranked, big time major league.
I'm in prison and there is an extremely light day. The clerical staff prints a list of customers scheduled for the day. They created a long schedule with all sorts of fake customers with the most ornerous types of work (for me) to do. Not only a very busy schedule, but some extremely time consuming work that would get me waaaaay behind. When I read the schedule (I only look at the work to be done, not the names), I thought all sorts of ugly words and immediately got busy so I wouldn't get too far behind. After about 30 minutes, I realized there were some assistants needed for lots of this work who were nowhere to be seen. When I went and asked where they were, they told me those people were off today and the schedule was fake and they were upset that I hadn't freaked out. If only they could have heard those words that went through my head.

7:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

here are just a few of the customer names:
Daniels, Jack
Weiser, Budin Acan
Day, Haveanice
Kelley, Gottyou
Morris, Thecat Harry
Perry, Mason Lee
Theya, Mademedo
Red Bull, Ima Needsome
Ocean, Billy Carl
Bobby, Ricky

I've heard of some of those folks. Sure they're not real?

8:28 AM
Blogger michael said...

Solid prank right there.

But how do we know those aren't the real people and THT isn't the fake?

8:56 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Everybody already knows I'm fake.

Great win for the Predators last night. Can they compete consistently with the Blackhawks, or will the Blackhawks control the series? I hope the Predators win the next 3, but I won't place any bets.

12:57 PM
Blogger michael said...

Blackhawks will win the pennant probably.

2:10 PM
Blogger THT said...

Maybe they can meet their crosstown rivals in the World Series.

Penguins up 2-0 in their series. I don't have any idea how this series is going to end up, but I'm certain of how I want it to go.

Blogger THT said...

Good news/sad news.

The Detectorists to return for a 3rd season to air in Britain late this year :)

Only 6 episodes and it will be the final season :(

That's two week old news that y'all may have already told me about and I forgot. I hope I can remember to watch it next year.

6:35 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

We'll never get to 5,000 if y'all don't do your part.

Double shift day at Buy More means I miss out on a lot of playoff hockey tonight. I hope the west coast game goes to triple OT.

I got car trouble. Probably gonna cost $500+ to fix. Cars are stupid.

12:04 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I didn't have car trouble. I took my car for routine service and they took me to the cleaners.
Car maintenance is expensive... and stupid.

12:06 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hot diggity!!! The Blue Leaves and the Canadian Legislators both won in OT tonight. I hate I didn't get to see the excitement. Rats, Ducks & Flames have already started and Flames have scored. I hope it goes to quintuple overtime. Rats as in darn, not as in rodent participation.

9:15 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I've got car trouble, too. But I'm putting it off for now. I don't think it will be quite $500 worth. Stinks having to do or pay for car work. Then again, I've never had a car payment. I'm not rich like THT, so I have to go the "keep repairing your junk" route.

8:51 AM
Blogger michael said...

I always ignore car trouble when I can. I haven't had a working air conditioner in it for about 4 years. Unfortunately the car wouldn't start this time. Had to have it towed. Woohoo.

10:09 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I take it we're not talking about battery here.

$500 seems high for a starter or alternator. Of course, it could be in a really stupid spot and it's just a bunch of book hours you're paying for.

10:58 AM
Blogger michael said...

Nah it's actually ignition cylinder area. Dang key has been having a hard time turning. During my troubleshooting (which included lots of banging and smashing of the general key area) I think I probably broke some electronics in there too. Anyway, the cheap people around town were like "You have to take that to the dealership, they have to order that part special to fit your key" so that's where I took it. Still waiting to hear back from them.

11:05 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Have you consider taking apart the column, and just not using a key anymore? Rig the ignition to be a hot wire start.

11:14 AM
Blogger michael said...

No dude we had not considered that.

1:13 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Hey, no, come on, MJT. We're ending this thing cheap, man.

9:47 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

That should be interesting. I bet auctions have been around for a long time. Lots of history to look at.

10:07 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It's supposed to be a list of prior auctions for a little bitty auctioneer in Vermont. So little bitty that they apparently have no resources to dedicate to their web site.

It just struck me funny that their history is in the future.

Headline: North Carolina inmate dies after apparent suicide attempt

Attempt?

1:37 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Did you read the rest of the article? It is a non-sense headline.

But now I wanna know. Did he not get it completely right so he died from complications some time later?

2:21 PM
Blogger michael said...

Well to be purely technical, the word "attempt" doesn't relay any information about success. You can have successful and unsuccessful attempts at various things.

2:30 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Sure, in the strictest sense that's true. But I can't think of it ever being commonly used in the English language in reference to an attempt that was successful.

I mean, if you want to be the Barney Fife of English ... be my guest.

2:35 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

By the way, that wasn't a literal invitation for you to come to my home or work place or anything.

Blogger michael said...

I spent one of my two week tours of duty in the Air Guard in Savannah back in the day. Lovely place.

While there I tried to get some of my buddies to pick up a deer carcass off the side of the road and put it in the back of the govt truck we had. I wanted to feed it to some alligators we had seen previously. They wouldn't do it.

10:43 AM
Blogger michael said...

Why don't you eat hot dogs, bubbs? You scared of choking on one and going into a coma?

10:44 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

You've got lame buddies.

Precisely why I don't eat them.

That and because I thought it was funny to love something yet not experience in 20 years ... What if my wife starts loving me?!?

11:50 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Hot Dogs are a fast food staple in Iceland and they have stands all over Reykjavik. They love their hot dogs there, and they're usually lamb-based. Good stuff. Secret is in the sweet mustard they use that I was hoping to find in a grocery store to bring home and try on American hot dogs.

1:18 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Well. Did you find the mustard?

1:23 PM
Blogger michael said...

"You've got lame buddies.

I'll warn them not to become awesome buddies, lest they get cannibalized by bubbs.

1:33 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I thought it a pretty slick torture for you. No cool friends for you. You ever get a cool one and they get eaten ... this is a perfect plot line for a Stephen King book.

1:47 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Did not find the mustard. Should have just stolen it from the condiments station.

2:07 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

No need to go to Iceland. Zack's in Burlington is a lot closer and has awesomely delicious hot dogs

Meanwhile, crappy hotel in Savannah doesn't have our room ready for us as of 4:15pm. That doesn't bother me so much as the fact they will probably rush now and not clean it very well.

That's cool. Does Peg do stuff with your maps, or do you have her move boxes around in the BuyMore or what?

Wow so the Preds swept the Blackhawks. Were you expecting that one, THT? I bet my brother is bummed. I rarely talk to him though so I don't know.

11:39 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't many expected that one.

Is this a safe bet that your brother is bummed? I hope so. I just put $10k on it. Let me know when you find out how much I won.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

the odds were so high he'd be bummed that by winning, you owe another $1000
