Welcome to another 5k

OK. So you all have reached 5,000 posts, so THT has asked that I make a new thread. I'll gladly acquiesce. But first, a photo of the always-lovely Jenna Fischer to user in a new post. Please enjoy.

This talking to yourself about yourself is getting out of hand, MJT. Although I agree with your assessment of yourself.

Sorry Preds fans, I was at Bonnaroo and missed Games 5 and 6. I'll take the blame.

12:08 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Saw a few on the lineup that would have been cool to see.

But who cares about the knowns. Who did you discover at Bonnaroo?

4:19 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I don't think discover is the right word...Portugal. The Man has been coming to Bonnaroo for a while now, but it's always been on days I'm not there while my friends have raved and raved about them putting on some of the best Bonnaroo sets they've seen.

I've listened to them here and there and caught them on ACL and liked them fine, but finally got the chance to see them Friday night at 1 in the morning in one of the Tents and, man, they rocked my face off.

8:02 AM
Blogger michael said...

As Portugal was inhabited before written records, there's really no way to know for certain who discovered Portugal.

9:31 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I did. I discovered Portugal.

10:51 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

What about The Man?

11:03 AM
Blogger michael said...

Well there are men everywhere, Ebro. I think we all discovered them.

11:20 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

No, I'm talking about THE MAN.

1:05 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I know The Dude, but I'm not sure I'm familiar with this THE MAN of which you speak.

1:40 PM
Blogger michael said...

Like, "THE MAN" as in the man, like the main man ya know, or more like "THE MAN" as in the Man, like "the Man is keeping me down?" It will be equally difficult to figure out who discovered each, but since the investigative paths are quite different, I think it's worth getting some things straightened out on the front end to save time.

2:02 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

What if Portugal is The Man?

Drove through 4 counties in the northeast corner of NC on Tuesday, I think for the first time. That makes 99 of the 100 I've visited. I've been within about 50 feet of Graham County but never in it. Why is all this important. Well, it's not.

11:59 AM
Blogger michael said...

Graham County is trash. They never play anybody.

12:22 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Within 50 feet? You run out of rations or something? Didn't want to caulk your wagon or pony up cash for the ferry?

1:15 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Not a fan of their crackers. I'd stay out of that county, too.

1:20 PM
Blogger michael said...

Their crackers are top notch, I'd say. Pro-tip: eat them with that store bought vanilla frosting. It's basically Dunkaroos.

1:26 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

You're ignorant, and you've proven it. Graham County has a terrible product.

I'd rather go with iced animal crackers: https://www.amazon.com/Market-Pantry-Frosted-Animal-Cookie/dp/B00O080VU2/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1497552204&sr=8-3&keywords=frosted+animal+crackers

Or put the frosting on a Nilla Wafer.

In other news: I don't know about you guys, but I've made a decision to stay off boats named "Fitzgerald."

10:20 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I don't have to worry about a boat's name. I avoid all boats except the gravy boat.

10:31 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The name of Medicine Bow is derived from the Indians. A tradition says that the northern tribes traveled annually to the foot of the Medicine Bow Mountains for the purpose of procuring a variety of ash timber from which they made their bows. With the Indians, anything that is excellent for the purpose for which it is intended is called Good Medicine. The locality was known as the place where they could procure good medicine bows, hence Medicine Bow Mountains, Medicine Bow River, and the town of Medicine Bow naturally follows. (WPA) Indians came a great distance to obtain the unusually straight timber of that part of the region from which to fashion their bows and arrows. It was considered good medicine to use that timber for the making of their weapons; they said, "Good medicine bows." (Annals of Wyoming 14:3)

What happened to Ryan Black? Seemed like a decent beat reporter from what I saw. Are the internet sites starting to get hit with layoffs now?

3:24 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I dunno what happened. I think he went to some other beat, but his profile says he's in between gigs at the moment. Who knows? Seems like a rough industry to make a living in.

Here's an example, MJT. It's the type of tweet you wouldn't see him make in the past:

Ryan Black‏Verified account @RyanABlack Jun 17
Hated to hear the two Georgia fugitives were caught alive. Hoping they would engage police and die in a shootout. They're both scum.

I guess it's weird to see someone's professional account become a personal one. MORE DIMENSIONS!

8pm tonight on NBCSN, NHL Awards show + Vegas's 30 expansion draft picks announced.

The entire THT clan is going to miss The Flower. He's been a great goalie for the Penguins, but an even greater person for the city of Pittsburgh.

10:13 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Got yourself a real thorny situation, there, THT.

1:12 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

the closer it gets to 8pm the more likely I'll be watching something other than the NHL awards/expansion draft. Or maybe I'll just take care of some clerical work. I can't recall any awards show I've watched other than the Heisman in 2010.

6:26 PM
Blogger michael said...

What'd you watch last night, THT?

9:46 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Thankfully, not the awards show. But my choice was just as bad. Someone in the family rented Logan from Netflix and it was pretty awful. Nothing but foul language and computer-generated violence. At 11pm things got a little better when Star Trek Voyager came on H&I.

The evening was not a total loss. I had a very large bowl of Blue Bell's Homemade Listeria, topped with ground up Girl Scouts of America Thin Mints and Hershey's brown high fructose corn syrup. It was DEEEEEEEEElicious.

Wasn't crazy about the last 15 minutes or so, but otherwise thought Logan was pretty good.

10:27 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I've seen much worse movies, like Mean Dog Blues, though that was by accident.

10:37 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'll tell you one thing. That "survey" that revealed 7% of Americans thought chocolate milk comes from brown cows - total sham. FAKE NEWS!

11:43 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That survey was probably planted by Putin.

12:25 PM
Blogger michael said...

THT, I'm sorry you didn't eat anything made out of scratch last night. but it sounds like you're content, so that's good.

I'd like to see Logan one day. I'll probably borrow it from my father in law, who buys all movies on blu-ray.

12:25 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'm always fascinated by the people I see riffling through the DVDs at Walmart. I've become so conditioned to streaming media, it seems archaic to me.

1:18 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I was just talking about dessert. I had some really yummy thing where MrsTHT took the leftover made-from-scratch pizza dough and wrapped it around chopped up chicken and broccoli, stuck it in the oven for a bit, and then smothered it in gravy. A little bland for most palates, but I absolutely gobbled it up.

8:35 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

it comes from a squeeze bottle of Hershey's brown high fructose corn syrup.

8:39 AM
Blogger michael said...

You should be super healthy like the MJT clan and get the non-HFCS version of the hershey syrup. You can drink that stuff straight from the bottle and it's totally healthy for you.

10:04 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

We only use sweetener harvested from honey suckle nectar, and use organic, free trade coco. Our chocolate milk makes you healthy and a good person.

10:15 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

makes you healthy and a good person.

probably too late on both accounts.

I may do a taste test with the Nestle non-HFCS chocolate syrup, Hershey's version. Milecah, is it the Hershey's Simply 5 that y'all use?

11:59 AM
Blogger michael said...

indeed it is, THT. mainly the kids use it, though, so no promises on the taste or anything. I usually eat my ice cream and drink my milk sans chocolate. But it has chocolate and sugar in it, so it seems to do the trick for them.

12:19 PM

Not sure of many specifics on Kristinuh. She still posts regularly on Twitter but everything is business related. Her profile lists her as still in Auburn. Here is her account if you don't follow already:

https://twitter.com/kristinaleroux

We should invite her back to 1.0

1:36 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Well. We're waiting. Why isn't she here yet?

2:23 PM
Blogger michael said...

Probably because of you. I bet you're the reason she left in the first place.

2:28 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I blame Feng.

3:42 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

looking at her kristinaleroux.com site, my guess is that she siphoned off most of Feng's virtually assisted customers, so Feng may have had her banhammered. The Irony is that Feng is now broke and can't afford internet service, so we don't see him here, either.

Come on back, zookeeper! Just send $19.95 to Dear Leader and he will re-activate your HABOTN account.

3:57 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Jokes on you, MJT. In Zookeeper's HABOTN prime, I wasn't around. She came around a few times on 2.0 and maybe some campfires(?), but she "left" before I arrived.

With that in mind, I might be the historical marker for the decline and fall of HABOTN. So at least I got that going for me, which is nice!

Hey Cincy! Thanks for the update. Looking forward to seeing y'all in 68 days!

Anybody want some home-canned beets from 1988? That's the kind of stuff in the basement of my aunt's house. Fortunately for me, she was an aunt by marriage who died without a will, and all the inheritance, including those beets and the task of cleaning up that place, falls to blood kin, two nephews and a niece from my aunt's side of the family. Whew!

8:28 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

88 wasn't a great year, THT. Now if you had a few jars of 87, that's a whole different story.

11:05 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

11:06 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm guessing that their original state is now irrelevant and that the can contains more green botulism than green bean, so we didn't open it. There was an undated home canned jar of "green debris" that, in its youth, may have been cut green beans.

12:35 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

It's been a while since I've had a nice helping of green botulism. Besides, since you decided to eat all the leftovers before I got to your house last time, I'm running out of options. I'll be over to pick up the botulism later.

The THT I know wouldn't care if those beets were canned freshly yesterday, he wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Don't ruin my image.

10:02 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Tarnish the image perhaps, but not ruin.... I'll let you in on a secret. I've actually taken a few bites of roasted(?) diced beets this year. Not a whole serving, mind you, but the first beets I've put in my mouth since I was a pre-kindergartner. I can eat beets if I have to, but I'm fine without them.

On a more somber topic, a co-worker suffered a massive heart attack right in the middle of our monthly meeting at the Buy More tonight. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. You can pray for "Duke" since he is a big fan of his alma mater. Don't worry, God will know who you're talking about. He is currently intubated and has an aortic balloon pump with plans for CABG in the next day or two. He's just one year older than me and he exercises regularly.

10:54 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Sorry to hear that about Duke. The older I get, the more I realize how fragile this world is. Prayers have been sent for him and his family.

8:13 AM
Blogger Cincytiger said...

Oh, no! Hopefully the location of your monthly meeting was advantageous for him. Will be praying for "Duke". I agree with bubbs, life is fragile. Just lost my best friend from age 14 (that is friends for a long time!) to a carcinoid (NET) she had fought for thirty years. I have a new friend (known for eight years) who was just diagnosed with the same thing. Getting right tired of death. Pretty ready for the Lord's return.

9:08 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

God bless y'all and thank you for your prayers. I haven't heard anything today. Curiously enough, the Buy More is about 150 feet from an Emergency Room, so help arrived very quickly which was a good thing since he had cardiac and respiratory arrest right as ER people arrived. Twenty minutes earlier Duke was driving his car on the interstate from one of the satellite Buy More offices.

The only reasonable explanation is that she knows her days are numbered no higher than what michael can count.

I work at the Arsenal. Wasn't my building, though.

Tylerson works on base part of the time and used to work in the Sparkman building. Thankfully, he was at his other office off base today. Now they are saying there was no active shooter? What the heck is going on? Glad you who work on base are safe.

How old is Yellen? Like THT said, That kinda talk makes you think she doesn't plan on being around very long.

Didn't know you were on the arsenal. My mom works in one of those buildings. Glad everything turned out alright. Strange happenings, though.

Airfare isn't too bad. Can I stay with you guys?

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

bubbs, you can ride with us but your accommodations will be on your own. I wouldn't want to keep you up all night with my loud snoring and have you fall asleep on the hike and fall off the mountain. We'll be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Laramie. Seriously good breakfasts will be here

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Looks like a beautiful day just outside Laramie. I don't see a speck of humidity in that image.

Still plenty of snow in Snowy Range. Almost all of it will be gone for our trip unless they get a September snowfall.

10:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

uh oh, as of 0959 MDT, specks of humidity have crept into the sky at upper left, not to mention a lane closure in the right northbound lane.

11:07 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Road is completely open now, but there's stills some haze out there.

11:29 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think E-Bro should make the trip with me. Would make the staying rate cheaper.

11:33 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

there'll be room in the rental vehicle

Duke's head CT looks great!!!!! There has been concern of anoxic brain injury from his cardiac arrest because every time they try to wean him off the sedation he is very agitated/combative

11:48 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Good to hear. Maybe Duke just doesn't like coming out of sedation.

12:01 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

he's probably mad that they have a tube stuck down his airway

12:16 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Already been to Laramie. Anywhere close by worth visiting?

1:27 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Have you hiked up Medicine Bow Peak before? That's on the itinerary.

1:57 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Did you meet my cousins? Probably not since I don't think any of them have lived there in the past 30 years.

Did you go rock climbing at Vedauwoo?

Did you go hiking at Sand "Crick"?

2:38 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Did you see the bunny?

2:38 PM
Blogger michael said...

I think I saw the bunny. Was it soft and furry?

3:14 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I went to a football game. That's pretty much all I did.

3:17 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That's like saying you've been to Atlanta if you changed planes at Hartsfield.

3:22 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It looks pretty soft

3:24 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't think that's a real bunny. Pretty sure that's a yard ornament.

Sounds like E-Bro is not interested in having a good time in WY.

4:02 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Maybe we'll see a Jackolope. If not, we can always drive up to Douglas, WY, and take our pictures in front of their Jackolope monument.

4:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm down for a good time in WY, but back then I wanted to get back to Denver to watch the Auburn-Mississippi State game.

We won. Totally worth it. As was the trip War Memorial Stadium.

Good morning, sports fans.

65, 82, 96, and 97 days til kickoff, preseason puck drop, Snowy Range hike, & regular season puck drop.

45BEASLEY!!!!!!!!

11:09 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

We gave you plenty of time to pick that one up, THT. You're slipping.

11:24 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

actually, bubbs, you missed the real BEASLEY!!! 14 posts back.

11:53 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

oops, that was E-Bro. My apologies to perfect bubbs

11:54 AM
Blogger michael said...

They're basically the same person.

12:49 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

well that will make it easier for them to fit in the rental car, and they/he can go cheap on a 1 bed hotel room

12:58 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Let's just go with two single beds to be safe.

2:08 PM
Blogger michael said...

Why, bubbs?

2:23 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Because blanket forts are easier to make when you have two beds.

2:30 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Duh.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Duke had his CABG yesterday and is doing ok as far as I know. Don't know yet if he's conscious or not.

We're one day closer to football and it's NHL Free Agency Eve.

9:40 AM
Blogger michael said...

NBA free agency starts tomorrow too.

Why does the NHL copy the NBA so much?

2:24 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Why do their schedules align so much? Would make a lot more sense to have NHL to have their finals etc. when other major sports aren't playing.

y'all are a buncha slackers. Let me guess.. you're out shopping for Irony Day presents? I'll take a map.

"This listing (**********) has been removed, or this item is not available."

How ironic.

11:49 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

How funny! It was just there this morning. It was a slightly less expensive example of this map. RATS! That one sold, too!

12:07 PM
Blogger michael said...

How much does one of those sell for these days?

12:34 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The one on eBay was buy it now for $12K. Condition was pretty good, not spectacular. The one on the raremaps.com web site had been there for about a year, priced at $16.5K. Fascinating map that many claim is the first to hint at Columbus's discovery. However, based on the location of the land bridge and text, it might make more sense that it refers to Bartolomeu Dias's 1488 voyage around southern tip of Africa into the Indian Ocean.

However, all that map stuff aside, I think it's cool because it is the first printed depiction of eyeglasses. I've probably told y'all that before somewhere on Hv1.0

12:41 PM
Blogger michael said...

I think you have told us about that one. Why haven't you bought one already?

1:17 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Do you want 12,000 reasons, or 16,500 reasons?
