If you find a generic 99% off coupon that's good for anything, I'll trade you a dollar for it.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Speaking of not paying full price, MrsTHT was upset that I finally broke down and signed us up for the old folks club, aka AARP. I did so after realizing they offer better hotel discounts than AAA. Saved double the $12 annual membership fee on our first football weekend hotel reservation.

But... you're not retired. Aren't you living a lie? Are there AARP discounts for maps?

Two reasons I can't:
1. Buying a framed map is never a good idea; it's hard to be sure what you're getting. There are too many concerns about condition of this one to consider buying it framed.
2. I need that 99% off coupon

You scared me there for a sec, THT. "Went home Monday night." My first thought was that he went HOME... Glad to hear he is on the road to recovery.

Wish I had seen the map posts sooner. I had a 99% off coupon but it expired on the 4th.

Duke's obviously not ready for HOME home yet. He's already itching to get back to work, but I think that may be the medication talking. My guess is the week after Labor Day, and no more double shifts at the Buy More for him.

There's a rumor going around that Feng found the Iron Iron atop Mt Irony and is now officially the new Irony Gnome. The sad thing is Feng was really just hungry and was looking for a hot dog on the mountain when he came across the Irony Iron Iron. He may very well have starved to death on the way back down the mountain. Unless of course he did find a hot dog, in which case there's a 50/50 chance he choked on it and is now dead or in a coma on Mt Irony.

Finally got out of the hospital. Feng has no concept of irony at all. As the Irony Gnome, he just went around hitting people in the head with a hammer on Irony Day. No ironic twist, no nothing. Though I guess in the meta sense, an Irony Gnome who doesn't understand irony is ironic.

I might pull some strings to get Tim his job back. Tim was the old Irony Gnome. He now works at a Pizza Hut buffet in south Eurasia. Pizza Hut buffets are all over Eurasia by royal decree. And there better be a dessert pizza on the buffet at all times, or else. Hopefully Tim hasn't screwed that part up and gotten himself executed. Irony Day is about making everyone unhappy in creative ways, not boring ways. I have people hit in the head with the hammer every other day of the year. Irony Day is supposed to be special.

9:47 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

not sure which day this is, but I'm wearing my helmet, just in case.

Is Tim blind in one eye since a childhood accident? Does he commute to south Eurasia from Wright, WY? If so, I'll be upset that my cousin never sent me discount coupons for the Pizza Hut buffet.

9:54 AM
Blogger michael said...

No, there must be more than one Tim in this world.

Eurasian Tim is the guy who used to post anonymously here on 1.0 before JGT outlawed unregistered posting.

9:59 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Since most years have an odd number of days, clarification is needed for the "every other day" head hammering. Is the hammering on odd number days or even number days each year and start from scratch on Jan 1? Or is it odd number days one year and even the next and just continue without regard to the start of another year? I need to know what day to wear my helmet so I'm not rendered unconscious during AU's national championship victory. It's easier to see the TV without my Magneto helmet.

10:04 AM
Blogger michael said...

No, I mean every day other than Irony Day. And really if I'm honest, on Irony Day too.

10:06 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Since when have you been honest?

10:25 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Looks like I should just have my Magneto helmet welded to my cranium.

Speaking of honesty, I can honestly say that all fruit is bitter if the sugar is removed. That's the conclusion reached after trying a variety of non-sweetened fruit flavored carbonated waters. And as long as we're being honest, such drinks provide only a scent of fruit, there is no actual fruit flavor.

10:36 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Personally, I'm a fan of La Croix. But I also like plain soda water, so I'm probably sub-normal.

10:51 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

La Croix Peach-Pear is the one I find tolerable, though certainly not what I'd call tasty. As much as I love the fizziness of Diet Coke, Coke, Cheerwine, Fresca, and Root Beer, I really dislike plain soda water. At my advanced age, it may be too late to abandon the 5/day aspartame-laced cans of DC.

10:59 AM
Blogger michael said...

I love plain water. I like sugar-upped soft drinks, though I only drink maybe one a month because they are poison.

La Croix is about the most terrible drink ever made. My wife likes the coconut one. It tastes like sunscreen.

11:09 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Not a fan of coconut. The taste is bleh and the texture is like eating paraffin, which is not one of my favorite food groups.

11:35 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think you're giving up too soon on paraffin. It's an acquired taste.

11:54 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I much prefer chalk.

Of acquired tastes, one that I apparently was born with was biscuit dough. I've always loved biscuit dough. Everyone else in the family mistakenly believes that I am weird because I like to eat biscuit dough. Sure, I may be weird, but that's not the reason.

12:11 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I was always known to grab some biscuit dough when mom was making them. Same with cleaning the corn bread bowl.

12:34 PM
Blogger michael said...

That's weird. While I love a good biscuit, the dough is basically flour and milk. Most delicious edible doughs (cake, brownie, cookie) have a nice amount of sugar in them.

At least cornbread dough will have a raw egg to add something interesting to the situation (plus raw cornmeal probably has a bit more flavor than raw flour).

12:36 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Right now, it's 2 to 1, MJT. You're ignorant, and you've proven it.

12:50 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Plus, they were always made with buttermilk. Definitely a different flavor profile than "flour and milk."

12:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I confess that I grew up with a simple biscuit, just plain milk (now 2%), Red Band self-rising flour, and Mazola corn oil (2 cup flour 2/3 cup milk, 1/3 cup oil). It's good eatin' prior to or coming out of the oven. Yes, I also like to clean the cornbread dough bowl, but I couldn't eat the whole batch of cornbread dough. I could make a meal out of biscuit dough.

12:58 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'll be honest, I've never eaten biscuit dough, but plenty of cookie dough.

Guess that makes it 2-2.

Me and Ebrough have forgotten more about dough than any of you people will learn in your whole lifetime.

1:46 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

What is the triple point of dough? Or have you forgotten that, too?
Have you ever had dough sublimate right as you are about to eat it? POOF! It's gone! Talk about disappointing experiences. That's got to be near the top of the list.

1:55 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

If you guys have forgotten that much about dough, it must mean that you've forgotten just about all of it AND KNOW NOTHING about dough! IN YOUR FACE!

1:59 PM
Blogger michael said...

Nough, we've only forgotten very little about dough. But the very little is still more than you have ever known. In fact, it would be very easy to regain the little bit of knowledge we forgot, but we like that there are still some mysteries in this universe.

I predict 8-4 season record. But I don't really know what it will be.

What do I know? I know AU wins in T-Town this year.

I remember waking up that day and knowing the Iron Bowl outcome.

What about the upcoming season? I have no idea whatsoever. Not even a clue. I'm going to say 8-4; worked out pretty well last time.

8:38 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

This morning MrsTHT sent a different water brand for me to try. It's not fizzy, but it's the best I've tried so far, probably due to the fact it has actual SUGAR in it. It is "OVI Peach Flavored with other natural flavors HYDRATION BEVERAGE". Of the 11 ingredients, Peach Juice Concentrate is dead last, far below Lemon Juice Concentrate (3rd) and Orange Juice Concentrate (4th). I suppose there is a hint of peach or vague generic fruit flavor. The scent reminds me of one of those single pack hand wipes like you get at Chickafil.

OVI? I'm just hoping I don't develop menstrual cramps after drinking it.

8:13 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I think we have a solid 6-6 season.

10:42 AM
Blogger michael said...

Sugary unfizzy fruit water, huh THT? Novel idea. I think the maker should call this invention "juice," but I guess I'm OK with them calling it a hydration beverage. I mean, it's their invention, so what say do I have?

10:47 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

A juice? That's preposterous. Juice is a cheap beverage you give to kids. Hydration beverages are expensive, no similarity at all.

The seminar in W-S is the weekend after the Miss St/Medicine Bow Peak/Ole Miss trip, so maybe we should just spend the week with you after Ole Miss so we don't have to drive back down there the following Friday.

Blogger bubbs said...

Solid idea. I'll mark it on my calendar. That way I'll make sure we expunge the house of onions before you guys show.

Fairfield Inn sleeps good.

5:08 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

How's the breakfast buffet, though? For $380, I'm expecting doughnuts and then some.

5:29 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm not sure anything sleeps $380 good.

At what point can we expect the SEC/ESPN to provide us a start time for Game 1? I wouldn't think determining game scheduling priority for the very first week would be all that difficult.

9:48 AM
Blogger michael said...

Fairfield Inn has great DIY waffles. Very often they will include strawberry topping and whipped cream.

They also have bagels and yogurt and fruit and various other things. They have a view hot things like eggs and sausage and bacon, but generally these items aren't all that well executed if I am completely honest. But still, the waffles!

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I need protein at breakfast, or at least pretend protein. I'll stomach some fake scrambled eggs if necessary, but I won't touch those fake little omelets some hotels offer. I like the breakfast buffet at the AU hotel, but by far the best breakfast when I'm traveling is at Cincytiger's condo.

10:18 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

That's not a very exciting breakfast, MJT. I bet Cincy charges half what they do for her tailgate breakfast, and it's much better than that mess.

10:59 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think I mentioned this last week, but it bears repeating after a return visit
(and I never ever in a million years thought I would utter these words)...

There is a a href="http://ncjellydonuts.com/menu.html">doughnut shop that rivals Krispy Kreme. HUUUUUUUUUUUGE custard filled chocolate iced doughnuts and HUUUUUUUGE apple thingiemabobs that are out-of-this-world delicious, larger serving than KK and much cheaper than any other doughnut joint.

11:12 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Looks like a pretty nice doughnut joint. Eat an extra one for me.

1:46 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

One? Wouldn't you like two?

2:04 PM
Blogger michael said...

Make it four for me.

2:07 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I don't know. I might get one of the bigger ones, but two seems over kill. Just eat a good sized option. Eat one large doughnut for me.

2:08 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I will gladly accommodate y'all's wishes.

Auburn's Gus Malzahn on Bobby Dodd Trophy watch list

is that some strangely encoded message saying he's on the hot seat?

3:08 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

It's a not so strangely coded message saying we'll have a miserable year, because people are talking about Stidham for Heisman and Gus for COY.

I may need to downgrade our record to 5-7.

3:14 PM
Blogger michael said...

It's a toss up in my book but if I had to choose I think I would pick Grit Laser to win the Heisman this year.

3:30 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that'll be a historic event for a bench warmer.

bubbs, you make a good point. Looking at our schedule, I think 6-6 is well within our reach; 5-7 if everything falls into place.

3:57 PM
Blogger michael said...

Grit Laser is the cream. And the cream always rises to the top, per Macho Man Randy Savage.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Macho Man was one of the all-time bests, he'd never steer you wrong.

9:45 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah, I'm not so worried about Macho Man. My concern is Grit Laser staying healthy. If we're going to be frank about it, I would be mildly surprised if our starting QB doesn't get hurt somewhere along the way. I think we'll need Grit and Stidham regardless of who starts.

Blogger Cincytiger said...

THT, I know you were kidding bubbs about staying with him, but if you want to stay in Auburn the week between the Miss St game and the Ole Miss game, you are welcome to the condo. No one will be there during the week, so you would have free reign and it would save you a long drive. Don't know if you would want to take a week's vacation in Auburn, but it sounds heavenly to me! :) Really, if there is any week that you and Mrs. THT would like to stay, you are welcome to do so. My price is much less than $380 a night. :) And bring some of those doughnuts with you. You know Jacob loooooves doughnuts!

7:25 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hi Cincy!

We're going to Laramie to hike Medicine Bow Peak between the two Mississippis. I will tell MrsTHT to remind me to stop for doughnuts on our way.

43 days til kickoff!!!

8:09 AM
Blogger michael said...

Hey THT how come they call it Medicine Bow Peak?

9:39 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Because it's a mountain. Not like they're gonna call it Medicine Bow Valley. Duh.

9:41 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Good medicine, bubbs

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

we're just over 40 posts from our last new page smell of this thread. I think we'll be there before the day ends.

Blogger bubbs said...

No question. Can't slow this train down now.

1:39 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It's definitely faster than the Rollison Express, and less likely to derail.

Blogger bubbs said...

Hey, where's E-Bro been? Trying to make progress over here, and he's AWOL.

2:00 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Not sure where he is, but I can almost guarantee he's not in Laramie. If we start guessing where he could (or could not) be, we will get to that new page before the end of a day.

2:08 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hey 61northak, is E-Bro with you? I'll trade my 96 for your 62 even stevens. You'll come out 34 ahead!

2:10 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

MrsTHT has apparently mistaken me for someone who wants to go to Costco after work.

2:32 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I've heard they've got lots of great samples!

2:39 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

lots of unhealthy and frequently weird samples. They never have good ol' bacon samples. Never seen grilled filet mignon samples there.

I'm guessing E-Bro is not on a raft in the middle of the Wabash River.

2:45 PM
Blogger michael said...

I could sure go for some Costco samples right about now.

My good friend Ebro is hanging out in Hawaii according to facebook.

5:06 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

the Costco trip was traumatizing, as always. I accidentally bought the Kirkland brand of bacon instead of our usual Hormel. However, I did score two unexpected prizes. After a year or so, they finally are again stocking the Laughing Cow fake Swiss cheese that I eat every day as part of my lunch. Plus, in the far back corner where I'd never ventured before, I found Sparkling Ice 18 pack with 3 different flavors, including my new favorite Peach Nectarine. Much cheaper than at Kroger and a nice way to try two other flavors.

Hawaii? I thought for sure they had internet in Hawaii. E-Bro is a slacker. Oh well, I'm sure we'll get to our last page flip of this thread by the end of a day.

7:35 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I am now qualified to recommend the crab cakes at Flavor on Main in Culpepper, VA. And the smooth mashed taters there are also very tasty. Of course, when we get home, MrsTHT can top that with Lady Cream peas, fresh corn, and fried okra.

I think I'm ready for lunch.

8:50 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah. Thanks a lot. Now I'm all hungry and stuff.

11:08 AM
Blogger michael said...

Same here. Any time someone mentions costco I just think of the samples and get all hungry.

11:11 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

By the way, I think E-Bro's trip was a little shady. I mean, I offered to split a room with him to go see Medicine Bow Peak. He goes island hopping and doesn't even mention it. Harsh, E-Bro. Harsh.

11:51 AM
Blogger michael said...

To be fair, he did mention it to his good facebook friends like me.

1:41 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Sadly, I still haven't had time for lunch. I'm in auto-digest mode. Carry on.

2:58 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Have you eaten yet?

4:36 PM
Blogger michael said...

There's really no way to know, bubbs.

I'm too tired to figure out what time your 5:42pm post was in my world, but I'm thinking your wife still has a set of wheels. As of 5:40 pm EDT I had eaten taken my first bite of lunch right after I got to our monthly Buy More meeting. No one had cardiac arrest this time, which was good.

1:06 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Wish they would waste billions on something I'm interested in.

Something like ... candy or something. BTW - did you know they've changed Now and Laters? Found some the other day and got them. They're way softer than they used to be. I don't think they could even pull a loose tooth.

3:40 PM
Blogger michael said...

Kids are soft these days! Guess they need soft candy, too.

bubbs, can you at least use LED sunlight?

E-Bro, you also missed a lot of decent content.

10:02 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

but you didn't miss our last new page of this thread!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

...or did bubbs beat me to it?

10:03 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I was letting you do the honors, THT.

Congrats on the page turn.

I think we can max this thing out before the season starts.

10:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'm dragging MrsTHT to Raleigh tonight to see a local production of an extinct Broadway play about Vince Lombardi. I can't wait to see who they cast in the role of the kid who met Coach Lombardi in a Baltimore hotel elevator. Surely that critically important event in Lombardi's life will be included, right?

10:24 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

If they leave that part out, it's a total revisionist history.

10:36 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

If I have to, I'll go up on stage and play the part myself. I have no doubt the kid probably blubbered like an idiot and I can still do that.

10:54 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Cliff notes?

11:14 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Of what I missed, I mean.

We still on for Laramie?

11:14 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

yes, I think I posted our flight schedule a while back. You're on your own for flight and hotel. As long as you arrive in Denver on our flight or earlier, you can ride with us.

I'm sure MrsTHT would appreciate some help hauling me up that mountain.
