Penguins & Senators battled for about 48 minutes to a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately, in the preceding 12 minutes. Ottawa had scored FOUR goals. It was awful. So many Pens defensemen out with injuries the ones that they played were clueless. On one Ottawa goal scored from right near the crease, I searched on every replay angle and could not find one of the Penguins defensemen. I think he must have gone to Chili's during his shift.

•Some locations in the Snowy Range of southeast Wyoming may pick up over 3 feet of snow.

My most favorite place on earth, but I'm glad I'm not there right now. I've never used snowshoes and I'd probably put them on upside down and backwards. I'm trying to decide if I want to go at the end of August. When MrsTHT and I hiked up Medicine Bow Peak two years ago, I barely made it. Do I really want to start exercising just so I can make it to the top? Not sure the answer matters since I don't even know how.

unfortunately, yesterday only counted as one win. If they continue to play like that, they will win Lord Stanley's silver Cup in a few weeks. If they throw in repeat performances from Game 3, they will be eliminated forthwith. The Flower was the least of the Penguins' problems in Game 3.

Stared watching the Golden Girls. I like working through TV series that have tons of episodes.

I'm already struck at how "forward" it must have been at the time. Frankly, I'm kinda surprised there wasn't a big stink about it being on TV. Or was there? Before my time, so I really don't have a context for it.

9:06 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I like that Warren guy: http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/grove-park-inn?

9:11 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The Original THT loved the Golden Girls. I never cared for it and still don't. If I'm going to watch old shows, I prefer Laramie, Monk, Star Trek Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Andy Griffith, Hogans Heroes. I'd love to find Green Acres on TV, especially episodes with Alvy Moore as County Agent Hank Kimball.

Nashville's a good Southern town, so why not pull for Predators to win the West? I figured I needed a team to pull for when the Penguins were blowing their 3-1 series lead against the Ovechkis. If the Predators get to play the Penguins, I hope the Predators get swept. If they play the Senators, I hope the Predators sweep.

9:32 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Got ya. That NHL fandom logic works for me.

I think the only non-trek show you listed that's on Netflix is Andy. I've seen just about every episode three times over. Still give it an occasional look, though. Never got into any of the Star Trek series. Consider it a mark against me.

talk about demoralizing. Instead of a 3-0 series lead, Penguins now lead 2-1 and will likely be without their best player the rest of what could be a very abbreviated postseason. They have already been without their best defenseman for more than a month and without their starting goalie since the last week of the season. At one point last night, 3 of their forwards were knocked out of the game with injuries; only one of them returned later in the game. There was so much empty space on their bench they should have sold seats there.

What's the deal with NHL replay, THT?

Do they not have to be conclusive to overturn or did the NBC guy just get the rule wrong when explaining why he didn't think that Preds goal would be overturned?

9:21 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Someone said the quality of the replays looked like they were using the camera from an old Motorola Razr. I have no doubt that his skate was off the ice before the puck crossed the blue line. I have no doubt that I don't like that rule. The "nongoal" occurred while I was outside with a grandpuppy who just couldn't wait until intermission, and I didn't catch all of the replay discussion. The part I heard, the question of puck possession was never mentioned. If you are in possession of the puck, you can be all the way across the blue line ahead of the puck. Had he received the pass and in possession of the puck when his skate lifted off the ice?

As far as conclusive... it's just like college football; it depends who is in the replay booth. It seems like the replay booth decision is about 50/50. I.e. 50% correct (or at least unable to disprove on field/ice call) and 50% blatantly wrong.

9:33 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

It wasn't necessarily wrong.

I just didn't see anything from the aforementioned poor quality replay they were using that could conclusively determine the skate was off the ice, but maybe the replay official had a way better quality video than the one NBC was showing us.

10:28 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think the NHL must have pressure sensors in all the players' skates. Who needs cameras?!

I've been working my way through - White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America.

It's dry at times, but generally fascinating. The reason I mention it is because with the current political climate it's good to be reminded that our politics have always been a freak show. And it's interesting to see how Trump tapped into the segment of the nation that he did. I'd also really like to get my hands on Hillbilly Elegy. But it's not in the library system yet, and I try not to spend much on books these days (a 180 from 10 years ago, but that's another story). I digress. Covfefe and what not.

8:45 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

at least you read the books. My favorite genre is reference books. They can be pretty dry, too.

9:19 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Hillbilly Elegy is available in the Madison County library system, bubbs. No big deal.

I go there for most of my reading these days, but if it's an incredibly popular book that I know probably isn't going to be available to check out for a while (due to demand) that I really want to read, I'll go ahead and buy it. That's what I did earlier this year with Lincoln in the Bardo.

10:08 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

my latest reads; I read almost all of the first, but only one essay from the second. Actually found the aging author in some little coastal town in the UK and he sent me an image of a Carolina coastal chart that was in the National Maritime Museum in 1982 but now they can't find it. Yes, it always comes back to maps.

Nicholas Pocock, 1740-1821 (Conway's Marine Artists, Vol. 1)

Hey, our system has it now too! Been a few weeks since I looked. I just put it on hold. Nice.

THT that first one sounds like a picture book and the second one (that you didn't finish) is less than 90 pages long. That's cool. Sometimes I struggle to get through really long books too.

How do you lose something like that? Security not as tight as it needs to be?

Note to self: stick to AU topics. Nicholas Pocock is a threadkiller.

Let me guess. You weren't so interested in his depiction of naval battle as much as for stuff like this: http://bostonraremaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/BRM2789_1-Pocock-Carolinas-1770_lowres.jpg

Have to admit. Some of the naval paintings are pretty cool.

Yes, the chart interests me more than his later career as an artist. I'm amazed at the natural talent he had for drawing, especially while rocking up and down on the ocean! Check out a sample of the drawings he made almost daily in his logbooks. There are also superb drawings of a few birds and other critters (e.g. flying fish) scattered throughout his logbooks.

If that had been my logbook, you would see stick figures covered in vomit.

Well, bubbs, he had plenty of spare time sitting on a boat in the ocean for weeks at a time. He did a sketch almost daily. All the SC coast profile views in the top left corner of the engraved chart were taken from drawings in the March 1, 1768 entry in his logbook.

1:19 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Captain Cook was a complete hack.

I've just come to the realization that I have no idea what a captain's typical day looked like. I know the average sailor would be busy one way or another. But I don't know how I should feel about a captain that sat around and sketched boats.

The Paris Accord was always political and remains so. I think that's why some people are decrying his decision so much. It's more about making a statement that Trump is about tribalism. They say it strikes as him not being willing to work with other nations.

But, like, that's not new. He ran on a nationalistic platform.

I'm coming around to seeing it as mostly noise (IMO). If there is a danger, it would be that Trump doesn't believe the science that points to climate change, and actively works in the opposite direction. Even then, I'm not sure what the sum would be. A lot of the systems designed to reduce green house gas emissions already have fiscal incentives.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Blogger bubbs said...

If climate change meant that we'd be getting cooler weather, I would not be against it.

12:21 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

The Anti-Tuscaloser Accord is a much more pressing issue than a measly half a degree here and there.

I believe in global warming but I also believe in wearing flip fops 365 days a year. :-/

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I prefer my feet to be bare. However, when that is not allowed, I go all in. No flip-flops or sandals in my wardrobe.

A little shaky in the 9th, but AU opens regional play with a 7-4 win over UCF. GO TIGERS!!!

Which comes first, kickoff or a new thread? Maybe we can have an Irony Day posting marathon.

It will take extraordinary effort to top fresh peaches and Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.

7:15 AM
Blogger Cincytiger said...

Mmmm. Peaches and ice cream. Unfortunately not in my eating plan at the moment.

Bubbs, I enjoyed Hillbilly Elegy. Some enlightening thoughts. Will be interested to see what you think of it.

Auburn currently 2 strikes away from going to the regional finals. Nervous.

Hey Cincy! Come on by the Buy More today. We're having a great big 24 hour sale in celebration of Nashville's impending Stanley Cup championship

Let's hope the Tigers come up with a big W tonight! GO TIGERS!!!

Blogger THT said...

Rats. Great 9th inning comeback goes for naught. It will take some serious willpower and resolve to forget it and put forth a winning effort tomorrow night. GO TIGERS!!!

Something about holding a lead late against FSU doesn't suit us it seems.

I blame MJT for having latent FSU love. He needs to burn some stuff.

I saw a guy earlier today withdrawing from a Honda Accord. What do you guys think of that?

11:05 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Sad!

12:53 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that was a painful double dose of losses last night.

However, this is a super strong pain reliever. I feel GREAT this morning!

8:24 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Based on history, the Penguins should win in 6 or lose in 7. All their Cup wins have been on the road, and their only loss in a Final was on home ice.

The Pens have already defied their tendency to follow history once this post-season thanks to an assist from the overwhelming power of Ottawa's Game 7 history of failure.

88 days til kickoff! Yes, only 88. Yes, I like typing 88!

9:38 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

88 days. A lot of stuff can happen in 88 days.

E-Bro will be excited. The drive to the beach will be getting shorter soon!

10:40 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Not short enough.

1:14 PM
Blogger THT said...

I guess fresh shrimp would be a bit closer. Other than that, I have no reason for shorter drive to the beach. What about one of those monster subzero hurricanes like in that movie a dozen or more years back. I like the chilling idea.

4:14 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

THT, the both of us are on the same page. The upside for us is that we might get the chance to live on a new iceberg. Maybe we can volunteer to do research or something.

1:51 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hey Art! Stick around for one of your patented page flips!

The Packer signed Leff. Will there be no end to their domination in the NFL?! They already have 13 NFL championships. That's 8 more than the 49ers, 8 more than the Patriots, 8 more than the Cowboys. With Leff, they may win the next 8 Super Bowls! Unless they waive him, in which case the Curse of the Laid Off Leff will haunt them forever.

2:10 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'd steer clear of that curse, if I were them. It's a tractiony one.

or maybe get a five year gig that pays over $900,000 every WEEK to run a company from a value of over $100 BILLION to a value of $5 billion, á la Marissa Mayer

I think the next step in that process is to run in a presidential primary, per Carly Fiorina

9:29 AM

If Marissa Mayer becomes our next president, I'm moving to that country where all the celebs moved after Trump was elected.

If I eat my pack of nabs now, and the vending machine won't take a twenty, what on earth will I do when I'm hungry again around five o'clock and still have an hour before heading home for dinner? Trump should be thankful he doesn't face such difficult decisions.

2:30 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

In all seriousness, I'm not sure he's capable of such decisions. He'd probably tell someone how great they are, and then manipulate (or bully) them into buying him something from the snack machine. All the while making it seem like he's doing them a favor.

So. You could try that, maybe?

2:48 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

that's a great idea, bubbs! And I'll feel so presidential doing it.

4:07 PM
Blogger michael said...

Who do you think will win the hockey match tonight, THT?

4:15 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

GO PREDS!

4:16 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

michael, I have no idea. I sure hope it's the Penguins, but I have no earthly idea. The Predators looked waaaaaaaaaaay better than a #16 seed in the past two games. I can only hope they will start playing like a #16 seed.

4:40 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

They are spacing out the games so much now that it's hard to maintain enthusiasm for it. I think I've already fallen into summer doldrums.

86 days til kickoff.
GO TIGERS!!! WAR EAGLE!!!

New U of Nevada football coach released 9 scholarship players (16 total), apparently for not putting forth enough effort during spring practice. He must mean business.

10:28 AM

We better keep putting forth enough effort here or Jay G might release us.

10:31 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Don't tell me what to do. YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!

10:59 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

We're talking about practice, man. What are we talking about?

11:07 AM

Lucky for me, I'm a pro at talking to myself, so I'll be fine once you stooges get the boot.

11:27 AM

Fizzzzz. Page burn.

11:29 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Someone may have to call JayG back in here before the season even starts. Getting ever closer to the 5k.

That's assuming he doesn't kick most of us out. Obviously.

11:31 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

JayGT can't boot us. Omnica ran off with his banhammer. We have squatters' rights, buster.

11:46 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Squatters rights!

I read about those in this White Trash book.

11:49 AM

There must be a photo of me in that book. If not, it's fake White Trash.

There are a number of ... weathered individuals in there.

I hope you get teeth soon, THT.
