How was dinner, MJT?

Protein ... doesn't ring a bell. Not much of a meat eater.

Blogger michael said...

Dinner was eventful.

I was picking kids up from swim practice, which has us getting home at around 8:00pm. So I get home and I smell deep fry oil, which is a good thing. But my wife is freaking out and saying she might be dying, which is a bad thing.

MrsMJT had gone by Publix and got the on-sale chicken and BOGO french fries. So far so good. She bought some not-on-sale tempura and coconut, but that can be excused due to the savings on the other stuff. So on the menu is coconut chicken fingers, something we used to make when we were newlyweds but haven't had in about 11 years.

She had put a bunch of oil in a large pot for deep frying and placed a cooking thermometer in the oil. She cooked the first round of chicken and ate some to test it. Then she looked back in the pot and the thermometer had busted. So she's freaking out that she might be mercury poisoned from her taste test. I'm like, I don't think they put mercury in cooking thermometers. Seems like that would get the manufacturers into trouble. So she is searching the internet, find the thermometer, finally figures out what's inside, then searches to try to figure out if it is safe, and she eventually concludes she isn't dying.

She finally gets back to cooking, and we end up eating at around 9:20pm. The final product was very good. She also made a fancy salad.

It will be very hard to grade this one on the performance review. The schedule was just all out of wack, but it wasn't exactly her fault. And the final product was yummy and nostalgic. I'm thinking I'll still give her Exceeds Expectations. Still a little room for improvement, after all.

how did the vegan bubbs clan do last night? Did all the carbs eat good?

Carbs ate good.

By the time I got home it was 6ish and Mrsbubbs was gone with Jr. to soccer practice. That left me at the house with the girls. When I walked into the kitchen, I saw that there were a few biscuits left. I deduced that everyone else had already eaten, and that I was going to have to go it alone for dinner. It was also clear that MomJr was the one that made the biscuits. Having completed her cooking chore, MomJr was not to be found. This is pretty normal, since she's basically an 11 yr old hermit that lives at the back of the house. So I decided to clean up a bit while I got the pasta going.

The Baby came in and started asking for something to eat about the time I had assessed the kitchen. Also normal. She's always dying from hunger despite hardly eating at meals. Before she could finish her plea, she noted that I was picking apart a biscuit and eating it. It was then she informed me that it was her biscuit, and that she was saving it. I pointed out that her name was not on the biscuit and she had no legal rights. Foiled, she switched to asking for work to do so she could make a couple dollars for field day. I told her to grab the broom and get to work.

Con Artist was busy with cartoons, so I didn't see her for a bit. When I did she also asked for a job paying money. When I told her to fold laundry, her need for cash suddenly dissipated. From then until the soccer crew arrived, Con Artist and The Baby made a general ruckus playing some made up game with Popsicle sticks and cups.

In the end, I had my pasta and a biscuit. I also ate some peanuts and gobstoppers for desert. It ate mighty fine.

Mrsbubbs did save me from having to go to soccer practice, but she left me alone with children. Not to mention, I had to find a way to sustain myself. I think the performance review will reflect that she should be using the children for labor more effectively. They could have a clean home and a nice spread waiting for me when I come home.

11:21 AM
Blogger michael said...

I've given up hope of a clean home, as we are all either messy or in denial about being messy ("I'm just too busy to clean"). So this doesn't even come into play during performance review time. It'd be like dinging her for not winning a decathalon gold medal.

It's like my grandmother told me one time: "One day you'll have a clean house, but all your kids will be gone*, and you'll miss them."

*per THT, this may not actually be true in all circumstances

11:35 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Mrsbubbs is actually the most persnickety about the clean home thing. Clutter bothers half of us (Mrsbubbs, me and MomJr). And when you consider how small our house is 1. It doesn't take much mess to become overwhelming C. It doesn't take much picking up to keep it "clean." That said, there's no white glove inspections happening.

A saying we have in our house is "People are more important than things." So ... stuff slides.

Are you saying that THT wont miss his kids?

Pens spited you again, THT. Gonna be hard for them to lose in 5 now.

9:20 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

TBL won't win in 5, but I think it was more of a tease than a spite. TBL have the Pens right where they want them.. almost. TBL is looking for a repeat of 2011 when Pens went up 3-1 in the series, only to choke away the next 3 games. So, the spite may still be forthcoming.

11:56 AM

TBL just needs to up their game in the Power Play and the Pens just need to watch out for icing and need to win more puck battles.

Indeed. The Lightning fended off the Penguins for a Game 4 victory. Tampa Bay controlled the first and second periods, then held off a furious Pittsburgh rally in the third to claim Game 4 and even the Eastern Conference finals at 2-2. How do you like that?!

What do you think? They going to go back with Fleury or leave Murray in?

Why is errbody so quiet today? You guys find something better to do?

4:44 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I've been stuck at the Buy More, buried under stock that I need to get on the shelves.

I would have started Murray but I don't have any strong argument for Fleury getting the start. However, I would have gone switched to Murray in OT. Fleury was getting weaker and weaker as the game wore on. He couldn't find the puck to freeze it on a few occasions. In the end, it probably would not have mattered. Murray is just as prone to getting beat up high. The Penguins skaters were getting weaker on defense as the game wore on. The dude had a wide open shot. Epic fail by the Penguins. I cannot watch tomorrow night. The pain would be unbearable.

Auburn softball better not let me down.

Hey. Does anyone know where we can find how many collective starts our OL has? That always seems to be one of the more consistent indicators ... This is when I wish Morrison was still a beat hack for us. He would always come up with some interesting statistical analysis. Most hacks just cobble together a collection of obvious statements for stories in the preseason.

How about that game, THT? Murray did well. Crosby was on fire. You started out with a 3-0 lead before the Pens remembered they were supposed to be spiting you. Of course, at that point it was too late, and they had to win anyway.

Smart money is still on TBL. Penguins Game 7 history:
Home 2-7
Road 5-0.

It's a shame they couldn't have stayed in Tampa for the next game. Somebody needs to put a big "VISITORS" sign on the Pens locker room door.

At the post-game press conference, they had name placards for him and Murray facing the press. As they walked in for the presser, Crosby switched positions of the placards so that he was sitting to Murray's left instead of to the right. I was not aware how critical seat position at a post-game press conference was to the team's success.

MrsTHT and I binge-watched The Man in the High Castle, for lack of tv. Did you know that when Jimmy has an 11pm work-related meeting on the west coast, people in NY are just sitting down to dinner? Or that it is the middle of the night in Beijing and NYC simultaneously? Stupid show.

1:01 PM
Blogger michael said...

Yeah, I initially turned on the Warriors because of the Bulls thing, but now Draymond Green has been so annoying that it took it to another level.

Cavs will probably get swept, though. They will go down the toilet faster than a handful of opiates at THT's house when the police knock on his door.

1:21 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

If the Cavs took 'em to six games last year without Love and Irving, I gotta think they'll avoid the sweep, and I'm interested to see what effect the OKC series has on Golden State mentally and physically. Maybe it galvanizes them. Maybe it drains them.

2:10 PM

Oh My

Verne Lundquist will step away from SEC football on CBS after 2016 season, replaced by Nessler.

2:24 PM
Blogger michael said...

If Klay and Steph go cold, the Cavs have a chance.

The problem for the Cavs is that Irving and Love are both terrible defenders. They'll be stuck trying to outscore the Warriors with those guys in. We'll see if they can do it.

2:24 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I doubt they can as well. Just feel like this still has the possibility of being an interesting series. Something has felt off about the Warriors all playoffs. Even that Portland series was the closest five game series I think I've ever seen. Maybe it's just Steph hasn't been operating at peak level much of the time (due to not being 100%). Maybe he's finally starting to come out of it and that spells doom for the Cavs.

Even with him and Klay getting hot last night, it was all the other Warriors role players all the sudden not being able to miss the three ball that really allowed them to stretch their lead during that second half run. Kind of impressive that OKC got back in at the end.

Nice cover, E-Bro. Can't say I'm that familiar with Real Estate. May have to check out some of their other stuff.

Since we're on the subject of music, you ever get into Shakey Graves? And The War Came album is a favorite of mine. I think you would enjoy it.

You know, I saw his ACL performance as well as his Tiny Desk Concert some time back and liked both quite a bit, but haven't delved too deeply past what I listened to there. Need to rectify that.

Don't know much about Real Estate except the few songs I've heard on the radio the last year or so from their last album, Atlas. I dug them, alright. If I had to describe their sound based on that small sample size, I'd say it sounds like Dream Pop, but played with standard rock instruments. If that makes any sense. This Strokes cover sounded more psychedelic, which kind of threw me off.

I like it when a cover song changes style and it still really good in a different way. My favorite line in that song (why won't you wear your new trenchcoat?) is totally changed by the style of the song changing. Changes it from cocky pettiness to broken-hearted pettiness.

Mercy, Jimmy. He's obviously already been fired and it just hasn't been made public. I hope they have a really good search committee working on finding us a great head coach.

I watched softball until a few pitches before it became 3-0, at which point I turned to hockey. No team since the Red Wings in 1942 has blown a 3-1 series lead in the Final. Of course, no team since the Red Wings in 1942 had blown a 3-0 series lead in the playoffs until the PENGUINS in 1975. So, I will officially remain skeptical [wink, wink]

Blogger bubbs said...

MJT bringing hard hitting questions today!

That's a tough one. Obviously, this isn't something I've thought much about, but I would say you could fly both but not just the American flag on the graves. Both being there signifies their allegiance, and the fact that the current union respects their contribution. No ill will or disrespect to those of the opposing side. I also wouldn't have a problem with them just flying a Confederate flag. It is what they fought and died for, and (at the very least) a strong argument can be made that they weren't fighting for a nefarious agenda.

Contrast that with German solders from WWII. I don't think anyone would be cool with flying Nazi flags on their graves.

9:56 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Do you have a link to transcript or video, MJT? I haven't seen any, so I dunno if you're being sarcastic or if I'm missing some good jabs by the Lady Tigers.

9:57 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Also, for the sake of clarity: I do think much of the "War of Northern Aggression" did have to do with slavery, though not solely so. It's complicated ... But I think it's pretty well documented that those fighting for the Confederacy most often didn't have ideological motives (i.e. slavery ... that was primarily a rich man's concern).

So, I'm not bitter about the Union winning, but I'm not too judgmental of those who fought for the Confederacy either.

10:02 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Confederate flag and U.S. flag, or just Confederate flag. Since I live in the occupied CSA (I don't recall hearing of the CSA government ever surrendering), I'd be happy to have a Confederate flag at my grave. Except, I'd prefer to be cremated. And then there's MrsTHT who, if she outlives me, wouldn't allow Confederate flag even though she dislikes yankees.

Maybe put state flags on their graves instead. Common soldier's loyalty (as far as any kind of cause goes) was probably to that as much as (if not more) than anything else in fighting.

Speaking of slavery and such, my wife is reading Frederick Douglass's autobiography, and he has a song about slavery (written by someone else) that is just heartbreaking. You can read it here:

http://www.infoplease.com/t/hist/douglass-narrative/appendix2.html

"They'll loudly talk of Christ's reward,
And bind his image with a cord,
And scold, and swing the lash abhorred,
And sell their brother in the Lord
To handcuffed heavenly union."

"We wonder how such saints can sing,
Or praise the Lord upon the wing,
Who roar, and scold, and whip, and sting,
And to their slaves and mammon cling,
In guilty conscience union."

It's amazing and downright troubling knowing the blind spot our southern Christian ancestors had with regard to slavery. It makes you wonder what blind spots we have today.

I dunno, MJT. But I've wondered the same thing more than once. And the blatant racism in the theology of evangelicals (all the way up to mid-20th century - think apartheid) is often used as an example of how it's a pattern ... I think "troubling" is a good way to describe it.

I don't know enough scripture to say what a blind spot is for sure or not, but my view from the cheap pews up here is that there's a blind spot towards homosexuality.

Then again, maybe it's not all that pervasive outside of the systematic level of some churches - not all churches/denominations preach against homosexuality - and it's the parishioners who are ahead of the clergy on this.

Good news is that our bull pen is loaded. Fr/So pitchers are two of the better ones out there (if I understand correctly ... this isn't exactly my sport). Also looks like we're getting player of the year on the HS level coming in next year:

http://usatodayhss.com/2016/all-usa-softball-player-of-the-year-ashlee-swindle-curry-jasper-ala

According to that site, we have another signee from the first all-American team.

No surprise, but softball isn't to the level where the major sites follow its recruiting. I know we lose a lot of seniors (10?), but from what I can tell there shouldn't be a major drop off next year.

It's fun having a sport to be excited about in the doldrums of summer.

9:38 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

E-Bro, the LGBT debate is certainly one that's been put into that arena of questioning "traditional" biblical thinking. Has it been a blind spot in our past/present? I've struggled with that question quite a bit. I've read quite a bit. To this point, I've not been able to see how it aligns with Scripture. And it's not for lack of trying.

That said, that community has certainly not been treated properly/lovingly by the evangelical community. So even with those of us who disagree that it's a moral state in which to live, there's work to be done.

And time will likely sort the matter out. There's only a small sliver of folks who hold to Christianity and maintain racist teaching (not to be confused with racist thinking/acting ... my theology says racism is likely a sin in every man's heart that has to be dealt with persistently).

I can only hope that down the road when all my blind spots seem obvious (I'm hoping that point comes after I'm dead), that folks will not judge me harshly because of it. I try to keep that in mind when looking into the past. We all bear cultural baggage. Because mine is not the same as that guy's 200 years ago, it doesn't make me any better. I'm just as broken.

Pens need to pull it together. Let's put this to bed Sunday.

Sunday is, in essence, game 7 for the Penguins. I don't think they've ever won a game 7 when leading a series with 3 wins. 3-2, 3-1, even 3-0 means nothing if it gets to game 7. Too bad the Sharks didn't have the 3 wins. Penguins are undefeated in game 7 if they trailed 3-2 in the series.

Thankfully, I fell asleep during the 2nd intermission last night.

I guess I'll just have to cower in the pit for the rest of my life.

re: "better coaching", check out what Baylor fans had to say about CGM:
Personally, I'm not convinced Gus is a better answer than any of the coaches we've mentioned in recent days...Monty, Babers, Herman, Fedora, Morris, etc. Here's what we know about Gus: He was a good OC at Tulsa with a QB he inherited. He was a good OC at Auburn with Cam...who COULDN'T be a good OC with Cam. He did well at Arkansas State as HC for one year with someone else's players. Then, he went to the BCS title game in '13 with Chizik's players, including a QB that transferred from Georgia. He won nine games in '14 with Nick Marshall returning at QB. Now, he has a roster without a decent QB. In other words, he's coordinated offenses with QBs that he's inherited, not evaluated, recruited, developed.
If all others say no, I'd take Gus. But, Gus is a risk because he hasn't proven he can recruit/construct a roster...especially at QB. That bothers me a lot.

8:55 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Pretty nice break down of Gus by the Baylor fans. It does make me wonder about one thing, though. How much say did Gus have in regards to who was recruited while on CGC's staff? I mean, if he pretty much got his say for who they went after on the offensive side of the ball it kinda nullifies the idea that he can't recruit the right players. On the other hand, you can't have it both ways. Either his evaluation of QBs is generally lacking, or he doesn't know how to develop them once they come in.

I'm guessing the truth is somewhere in between. QBs are hard to project. With each new jump in level (from HS/D1/NFL), it appears to be less than a 50/50 proposition on whether or not they'll turn out to be any good. So I wont fault Gus for not having a Cam every year. However, I don't understand how he's stacked the roster. Sure you have to have other options but Grit Laser and Queen don't really fit his system. Why go for those guys and waste a scholly?

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't even know how much "developing" of a QB can be done. You can't make JJ not afraid to get hit. You can't make Grit a runner. You can't keep Queen from ... well, being Queen. JJ made mistakes last year that I'm pretty sure he was coached not to do. He's just not a gamer. He's a practice player at best. With his physical attributes, I doubt he was ever tested enough in high school to prove that true before now.

So I guess I'll go with 60% roster management, 20% poor evaluation and 20% bad luck. That's Gus's problem regarding our current QB situation.

Played pickup bball today on the arsenal, as I often do. There was some young new guy there, apparently someone's brother or brother-in-law or something. Anyway, I had to guard him in two games. Now normally I am one of the lockdown defenders in these parts, but I couldn't guard this new dude at all. He could shoot over me or get by me whenever he wanted. He w as making threes from a few steps inside of half court. I was actually getting a bit discouraged. In all my years playing, including high school bball in the memph, and playing intramural ball against Courtney Taylor and other intramural bball legends, I had never been this unable to guard someone.

So I asked my buddy after the last game, "So does this dude play college ball somewhere?"

He tells me, "Nah, he's about to be a high school senior."

I'm all like "whhhaaa??"

And he was like, "yeah, he's one of the top recruits in the nation."

I was like, "OK, this makes more sense now."

He is a five star recruit. He was actually wearing Auburn shorts today, but according to 247, he will likely be going to Kentucky:

http://247sports.com/Player/John-Petty-69923

We lost by two points in the last game to his team, 17-15. We had plenty of opportunities to win but just couldn't hit the game winners. Oh well.
