We're 1-1-1 in orange jerseys ... Should probably wear them every game this year.

11:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That's a great idea, bubbs! There's just no way it could cause any harm. And maybe navy blue pants for road games. We need to pull out every trick in the book until that long snapper dude arrives next year to save us from our awfulness.

11:17 AM
Blogger michael said...

So I was wondering this morning: seeing as how quickly Cam became a proficient NFL (NFL!) passer, is it actually a black mark on Gus's record that he was so terrible at passing to start off the 2010 season?

I don't think so, but the popular thing right now seems to be to poop on Gus's coaching ability, so I thought I'd throw that out there.

11:38 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

I remember his passing improving over the course of 2010, which would speak well of Gus. Besides, we've been over this. Gus' problem is roster management.

... Now that I think about it, if things go unexpected well this year (see post on orange jerseys), you could add that he's been terrible at coach management, too. This year he junked what he was trying to do and got a bunch of "yes" men for coaches. If that works, maybe he'll figure out the player roster too ... 443 DAYS TILL KICKOFF!!

11:42 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I recall greater trust in Cam's passing and increased frequency of passing as the season progressed; was there really that dramatic an improvement? I think we'll see the same trust in JJ this season...

12:15 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

"Dramatic" is such a... dramatic word, THT. I definitely remember improvement. To what degree, I dunno. That would probably make a fun article to read. Have someone hash through a bunch of game stats and see if they can quantify it (I think you'd have to go beyond comp%, that's not the full picture).

12:25 PM
Blogger michael said...

I'd say the improvement was dramatic. The passing game went from horrible to great by the end of the season. And I don't need stats to prove that, either. Stats are for cowards.

Hey, a national guy talked a bit about our QB situation... but was is really interesting in this article is where he talks about Verne:

http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/mailbag-baylor-bears-art-briles-auburn-gus-malzahn-verne-lundquist-michigan-state-061616

"But today, of course, he's (Verne) most synonymous with the Cam Newton Iron Bowl, the Kick Six, the Miracle at Jordan Hare, Johnny Manziel beating Alabama, et al."

We really have been blessed with some all time great games on ole CBS.

1:03 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

5 INTs first 6 games; 2 next 8 games
Otherwise, his cowardly stats were pretty consistent throughout the season.

1:18 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I concur on labeling Cam's passing improvement as dramatic in 2010. We'd of had no chance in completing the greatest comeback in Iron Bowl history with Game 1 Cam. Or Game 6 Cam for that matter.

It wasn't until the end of October, early November that I actually started to feel somewhat comfortable with him standing in the pocket to throw.

1:19 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

Let's not forget that Gus benched him in the Clemson game because of his decision making in the passing game. So he covered a lot of ground between game 4 and 14.

This makes for a complicated prognostication.

THT said the Pens didn't have a chance: They won
E-Bro/MJT said the Cavs didn't have a chance: They won
THT says AU doesn't have a chance, but Ebro/MJT are optimistic: That splits right? 6-6 season?

9:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

It's not like I think we're going to lose every game. I don't see us finishing any worse that 4-8. We'll need to spring an upset or two for 6-6. However, the fact that the media thinks we're going to stink certainly justifies E-Bro/MJT's optimism.

9:32 AM
Blogger michael said...

I was happy as a clam last night. Loved seeing Cleveland win.

As far as prognostications, mine was spot on, it's just I didn't take into account the possibility that Golden State's record setting offense would completely fall apart, including Steph becoming human and Harrison Barnes becoming the NBA equivalent of Jeremy Johnson. So if you are looking for a parallel in AU prognostications, I think THT is forgetting to take into account that the rest of the SEC is about to fall apart.

I said that I thought Cleveland wouldn't get swept...and they didn't.

12:28 PM

series 2 ended with one of them finding a real cool treasure followed by all of them doing the almost mythical detectorists' happy dance and then one deciding to take an archeology job in Botswana. I find it hard to believe they can have a series with one in England and one in Botswana. Plus, with the happy dance, they've jumped the shark as far as detectoring goes.

Looking back at a recruiting class:

https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/stock-returns-revisiting-auburns-2012-signing-class

I would say that's a pretty fair assessment. It is sad that 44% of the class was kicked or left early. In some ways that seems to characterize CGC's tenure as a whole. He couldn't seem to figure out how to develop/shape the players he got.

12:42 PM

8:36 PM

@THT

Now that I think about it, you're right. CGC had nothing to do with losing that class, although, we could blame him for having some of those players as targets. Clearly, CTT and the BBQ boys were the primary culprits of that class.

I'm still trying to figure out what Brexit means. I know what it IS, but I don't understand all the ramifications.

You can't think your way out of depression, E-Bro. You have to take vitamins (it just so happens a nutty buddy is stuffed full of vitamins).

I've definitely had the unexpected-end-of-delicious-food terror before. It often happens when I'm focused on my computer screen while eating, thus not paying as much attention to the remaining food as I should be. You got to be disciplined and look your food in the eye. You have to savor that last bite, otherwise what's the point of anything?

2:38 PM

Look, I have a GREAT imagination. It's almost as great as my palate. But even with this wonderful imagination, I cannot see Auburn losing a game. All Leff has to do is run backwards, steal the ball from our QB, and gallop on his traction-y feet over the crushed skulls of AU's opponents into the endzone any time he would like to have a touchdown. Auburn may average 300 points a game.

Welcome to Day 1 of NHL Free Agency. The fun begins at 12 noon EDT.

Penguins have no salary cap space, plus most everyone is still under contract, so they will be watching from rinkside today... with the possible exception of soon to be 40 yo Matt Cullen, who had a great 1st season with the Pens. Does he want to stay in Pittsburgh? Or does he want to chase a few more $ elsewhere?

7:29 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

If I was Matt, I'd chase the money. He's a part of a cup team and doesn't have much time left. Get a few extra dollars before going out.

I think I've eaten a tomato sammich every day for the past few weeks. My garden has been pumping them out, and I'm loving it. FYI - Cherokee Purple is my favorite variety that I grew this year. Low acidity makes them sweet and perfect for the tang of Duke's.

9:06 AM
Blogger michael said...

None of our tomatoes are ready yet. But we gots cucumbers, squash, and zucchini (as if anyone cares about any of that stuff).

My wife planted a bunch of roma tomato plants, and I was like, what the heck? Who cares about those? So I planted some beefsteak and brandywine 'maters in late May. Still gonna be awhile before I get to eat any of them.

9:54 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'll use the cucumbers as garnish in a Pimm's Cup if you want to give me any.

Blogger bubbs said...

I would give you some 'maters when you swing through on our Alaska trip but ... I guess that's not happening :(

MJT, I planted pretty early. I had plants in the ground by mid-late March. Although, it seemed like I had green tomatoes for about a month before they started ripening. I would like to try some Brandywine. I have a Betterboy and Beafsteak-like varieties. They eat good, but they're nothing like those Cherokee Purples. And, yeah, all the squash and cukes are filler. Peppers are okay, but tomatoes are the stars of the summer garden.

I plan on having seeds in the ground for the fall crop by the end of the month. I want greens (turnip/mustard), broccoli, butternut squash and pumpkins.

Yeah, it's a bit perplexing. Maybe they're selling it like, "We've never had a consistent passing game because we've lacked productive receivers. If you come to Auburn, you can be the go to guy."

Maybe? I dunno.

The crazy thing about that list (to me) is how high MS is. But I suppose Mullen is a "spread" guy. I just never think of them like that.

I've always been cautious of the kids and swimming. They can all swim now, but when they were younger it was tough. There's 4 of them. And moms "multi-task" at the pool just like everywhere else. Not to mention we've been at parties where kids had to get yanked out because they were drowning. So when they were at someone's house with a pool it was a little nerve racking.

Having said all that, I could have used that link several years ago!

The point is there have probably been plenty other bizarre campaign cycles throughout much of American history, and with far less palatable candidates than Adams and Jefferson.

I know how you feel about Lincoln, THT, but he didn't even appear on the ballot in Southern states. The history of US election campaign cycles is strange indeed.

After meeting with my family and coaches I am decommiting from Auburn to focus on academics and football

I hacked his phone and found the first draft of his tweet before he edited it:

Way to go, michael.

I didn't realize a "commitment" could be so distracting from academics and football.

Tomorrow the sun has already been up in Anadyr for 3 hours and, according to FoxNews, their Irony Day celebration is well under way. You know, I initially almost put my original comment on the 4* receiver on Twitter, but then I was scared he would read it and have second thoughts (because you know these kids probably search themselves on Twitter all day. That's probably what I would have done, at least).

Lo and behold, he is apparently a lurker here. I wonder if he knows how to write a dissertation?

Step 1: Google maps for eastern Eurasian town.
Step 2: Google sunrise + name of town
Step 3: Read wikipedia entry for town, noting discovery of naturally occurring quasicrystal in that area.
Step 4: Reach the logical conclusion that they celebrate Irony Day and their quasicrystals simultaneously since they have a limited autonomous okrug budget, most of which undoubtedly has been embezzled by the local political leaders.

I think it would be ironic if the Irony Gnome joined a convent. Well, it might not be that ironic since gnome is most certainly the feminine noun for the male equivalent "gnom".
