News of the day, 1/10

Hey everyone. We're still in a holding pattern, as best I can tell, in terms of the defensive coordinator search.

My citymate Alan, noted blog commenter, noted in yesterday's comments that LB coach James Willis was being promoted to the top defensive job. That nugget appeared briefly on Charles Goldberg's blog this afternoon. Goldberg since has rescinded that post. I talked with James yesterday. I didn't think to ASK him if he was the new defensive coordinator, though I can't believe that he'll get that job. I think he's a really good coach and a highly valuable recruiter, but he doesn't have much coaching experience.

I'll have more as the day progresses.

Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.

In keeping with tradition: Thanks to all the HOTTIES who make this the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

Basketball game notes:
*Is there a more overexposed player in America than DeWayne Reed? He needs 10-12 minutes per game. He gets 35.
*Auburn has a chance tonight. If they could just get something productive from Matt Heramb. Lucas Hargrove is making some things happen.
*Need more Quantez Robertson on offense. More penetration. He's really good off the dribble.
*The passing is crisper than I expected. Really good inside-outside passing to get open 3s.

So I'm here at the basketball game two hours ahead of time because I wanted to beat the storms out of Montgomery. So while I wait for call-backs that may or may not happen, I decided to hammer out my Top 10 Guitar Hero songs.

I know. Like 15 people who read this blog care. At least this will be fun for the 16 of us. Also, I'm ranking these based on how fun they are to play ... not how good the songs are on their own merit.

I play on hard most of the time. I prefer medium on one of these, which I note below.

1.) Cliffs of Dover, GH3
2.) Only A Lad, GH 80s
3.) Stricken, GH3 (on medium)
4.) Them Bones, GH2
5.) More Than A Feeling, GH1
6.) Killing In The Name, GH2
7.) Lay Down, GH3
8.) Synchronicity II, GH 80s
9.) Possum Kingdom, GH2
10.) Take It Off, GH

Not saying that I want it to be him though.

Hes a nice guy and I really love what he's done at Auburn, but I personally dont think he is ready. I hope its not true. We shall see.

2:29 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't think that's true, though I haven't received a confirmation either way. Goldberg is a guy who will be in the ASWA Hall of Fame someday, so I carefully consider the things he writes.

With that said, I think Goldberg's post simply was a computer error of some kind.

2:32 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I think and actually hope it was just an error but why would that story already be written. I mean, does he have like 4 of those stories already written just he can be the first to announce it. Very weird indeed.

James is smart, but definately not ready for this. But being an AU homer, Ill have to support the decision whatever it may be.

Charles has an explanation up on his site now. That'll have to suffice. I'll echo what Marshall said on his blog: Charles is the best reporter I know ... excluding present company, of course.

2:36 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess well have to take his response as true until time being.

Speaking of the ASWA, how much longer you got for this state?

2:39 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Depends on how long my paper is financially solvent. Or any newspaper for that matter.

Goldberg and I have talked about re-opening Goldberg Bros. in downtown Sylacauga. I think I'd be good as a haberdasher.

No, sir, we don't have any 10s in that style. Might I interest you in these magenta Crocs instead?

2:43 PM

Dude, Im there. Just let me know the time and place, though I think you should still do a little reporting on the side.

You think Charles had too many Margaritas?

Charles doesn't drink.

Darn, there goes that theory. Thanks for the props though on opening blog. Felt important there.

Charles has never been to Love Shack on Atl Highway then. Kidding.

Paul is killing Charles. What a prick, guess he hates men who have a backbone.

Please dont ever get to that level.

Paul Finebaum is an excellent reporter and a nice man. Really.

He is unkind and vicious on the air. I don't understand why he has become so popular acting this way. I'm so small-time that he doesn't ask me to be on the show, so I don't have to hear the vitriol. I don't listen.

3:03 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I listen to the first 30 minutes when I am near a radio only to see if there is ever any breaking news but after that its off. Paul has to act like that if 90% of his listeners are delusional. Smart man.

3:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Paul Finebaum is a reporter? I guess.. but certainly not in any journalistic fashion. I think you have to do work for that. You know, like drive in your car to the schools, or talk to someone that actually works at the universities.. oh, well his mysterious sources..!!

Finebaum is a blight on any sane persons brain.

I have a lot of respect for what you and Charles do Jay. You put your name on the line day in and day out only to have some idiots always calling yall out as if they know you. Gotta be hard. They are drilling Charles on his blog and for some reason threw your name in there. Screw em.

3:48 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Yea. I saw some yahoo called me out on Charles' blog. A Dude Named Mat? Can't he get more creative than that?

4:11 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mat doesnt want a part of you Jay.

Whats the point of calling someone out behind a keyboard anyways? Crazy.

Probably someone you pissed off at the Y.

4:22 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'm nice to the people at the Y in general. I give Alexis hell, but she deserves it.

Note to dudenamedmat it's "loser" not "looser"---pinhead. Or maybe you have become looser. Seems I remember Neal and you on Sports Drive talk about your weight loss. Hope you were able to keep it off.

I see we're like brothers in here today.

Have you guys ever seen a coaching search this tight lipped? I bet they announce tonight at the bball game.

5:05 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I have kept it off. I dropped from 315 to 200 initially. Now I'm at 205 because of some weightlifting and, well, I actually eat now as opposed to before.

I'm glad for my friends at the Y because they keep me going.

ps: I'm now leaving for Auburn in an effort to miss the storms as they pass through. I'll catch them on the way back, but this way I'll only hit them once. Stay safe, Gumpies.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I had to remove a comment just now. It was a bylined story from Jeffrey Lee of AuburnSports.com.

That's his work and it belongs on his site. And before you ask: We're good friends.

The issue was Burton Scott and his upcoming visits to ... a variety of schools.

Please feel free to discuss.

I am new to the blog. Will someone explain the "hotties" thing to me?

7:06 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I refer to the frequent HABOTN readers as the HOTTIES, though Jenna Fischer (star of "The Office" on NBC) is the "official" hottie.

7:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not easy to imagine that a guy like Finebaum, who makes a living creating controversy and spreading speculations as if they are fact, is in fact a nice guy. Somethin' ain't rite!

7:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Burton Scott's not a make or break player. Most legitimate scouts, not Randy Kennedy or your boy Travis, admit he's not a legit 5 star. Sen "Diesel" Marks destroys him 1 on 1 on the court. It's not even funny.

8:40 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'm serious about Finebaum. My one-on-one experiences with him have been universally pleasant.

I know what he's like on the radio and it's disappointing because he could be a great, great reporter. There is a lot more money in being a miserly radio guy, though, and we all like money.

Who is "my guy" Travis? I don't know anyone named Travis beyond Mr. Jarome at Troy University.

8:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay ... that explains it. Except for the fact that I also don't know what HABOTN stands for.

Sorry to be so ignorant.

9:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since everyone is making such a big deal about the fact we only have seven available scholarship players on the squad, you think they will let us play all seven of them at the same time?

9:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Your boy". Not "your guy". That sounds a tad feathery. Beyond that it was a dig at "you".

Don't get your comment about D. Reed. How about a little further explanation?

9:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Meant to say that was NOT a dig at you. Travis Rier (sp?) is the Bryan Matthews of Bamaonline.com. Bryan's style is real, not overblown. Travis is the complete opposite.

9:12 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

D-Reed is too turnover-prone and makes too many bad decisions to play 35+ minutes per game. Do you watch him play?

HABOTN = hottest Auburn blog on the 'net. In legalese, it's called "puffery."

9:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

...And Tez is NOT a good offensive player. Off the dribble good is Barrett when it's not coming off his toes. Nobody on that court or on the bench can handle the ball like Reed. Reed's also a much better shooter than Tez. Love Tez. He's the general. But he's not an offensive threat. And he knows that.

9:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Do I watch? Sure do. I also played, and I still do. Reed is going to mean a great deal to that program the next two years as his role expands.

9:16 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

O-A News ace Collin Mickle suggested that "overexposed" is a confusing word in this situation. Sorry about that. I mean that he's playing too many minutes.

I think Tez is the best ball handler on the team. D-Reed is second, but I think there is a chasm between Tez and D-Reed in that category.

Quan needs the ball more. They can't get him a shot right now.

9:22 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agree on Quan. He's useless out there if he's not in the offense. It's frustrating watching him coast around out there when he's such a good scorer. He's wasting away a potential pro career. He may already have. He doesn't have the gumption to over the top like Sly Stallone.

9:29 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

And he's not a good wrist wrestler, which hurts.

I'd love Quan more if he'd sing "Meet Me Halfway" in a duet Kenny Loggins.

9:36 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah Dewayne Reed either needs to play 10 minutes a game or only take four shots a game. I wish robertson would shoot more. Barrett can be really good or really bad on any given night. Quan Prowell plays like Antoine Walker and that bothers me. Korvotney Barber's injury is killing them and will the next month.

9:36 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Vot, sweet Vot. Where did you go. Josh, caretaker Josh. When will you lead the troops again?

9:44 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Robertson is a good dribble-drive guy. I don't understand why he doesn't do that more often.

Quan is getting more involved now. Charles Thomas just picked up his fourth foul. If Thomas fouls out, Quan could be a real menace for the Razorbacks. Steven Hill can't guard him.

Those weren't good shots after the first one. Not sure what's good about leaning back or to the side to get a shot off. Funny how everybody freezes up during those moments. You don't create space for each other standing in place.

I heard someone say they had read a post on a message board saying they thought Tubs was gonna name himself D coord. thoughts?

10:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it is as likely as anything else at this point. I mean, it would be good if he did SOMETHING on the sideline. That being said though, it doesn't really fit in the the CEO approach that AU has. Which works by the way. I am not knocking it. I just would rather the head coach not look as surprised as me as to what is happening on the field.

Now I have confused myself. Could that happen? I guess anything is possible. Will it happen? I don't think so.

What about you JG?

10:58 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

No way. Tuberville won't name himself coordinator. He isn't that kind of coach. He's an administrator who occasionally provides strategic input.

11:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't count on Tubs naming himself DC these days. Would your CEO names himself chief account executive? Heck no. Too much work involved.

5:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm new to commenting on this blog, but I was highly disappointed at the lack of GH talk. I mean, when someone lists their top 10 from GH1-GH3 you gotta debate a little bit. My input:
Weezer - "My Name is Jonas" (GH3)is a really fun song to play on hard because of the hammer-ons at the beginning where you don't have to strum.
More Than a Feeling is more fun to play on Expert, and since it's on GH1 it's not that much harder than some of the GH3 songs on hard.
I agree overall though. Cliffs of Dover is a lot of fun to play.

8:09 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

We will not have a DC. We will operate as is and see what happens. This is always the philosophy with our offense heading into the start of every season (pre-Franklin). So, we should be OK with a couple early blows while we "decide what to do".

9:02 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I agree that MNIJ is really cool with the hammer-ons and pull-offs during that acoustic riff, but the rest of the song is ordinary.

That's tough to say because I love the Weez.

I'll have to consider the More Than A Feeling situation. I haven't played hard vs. expert in a while there...

ALSO, nice work on the "decide what to do" angle. They just have to learn their team; what it can and cannot do. It takes time.

I would say that "Raining Blood" was by far the hardest song for me to get down. I blame it on the fact that I didn't know that song; unlike some of the others that I could mentally listen to right now if I wanted.

I really enjoy the second half of "Knights of Cydonia" the last 3 minutes or so.

"One" gave me more trouble than I'd like to admit.

And of course who doesn't like playing "Through Fire and Flame"

9:44 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since Borges was OC the offensive talent was never evaluated entirely until the 3rd or 4th game. Understandable with that kind of offense...in a way. But I, for one, always felt AU was underprepared for action to start a season compared, to say, Clemson, who always starts out hot.

Under Franklin, AU will have a system with interchangable parts to a degree. I think that must have weighed into the decision. So, starting the '08 season might be a great deal of fun.

10:07 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

My Advertiser brother-in-arms Bag Moon said the same thing about Raining Blood. I got through that song with like 73% on hard, so I'll agree that it's very tough, but I can hear the "melody" without too much trouble. So many notes.

I hated Cydonia the first few times, but I grew to like it. It would be on my list if I extended it to 20.

As for Auburn's slow starts, yea, I hear you on that. "Getting kids in the right spots," to me, should be happening in the spring. I'm reserving judgment on Franklin until I see what he does for a complete season. If this frenetic spread truly is a panacea, why don't more big-conference teams run it?

We'll find out soon enough.

11:17 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think more big conference teams don't run the spread b/c it relies so much on the QB. If you don't have a good backup and the starter gets injured, you're screwed.

Some big boy teams that do run it are Oregon, Mizzou, Kansas and W. Virginia. Mizzou's and Kansas' starting QBs were healthy all year and they both had great years, while Oregon and WVU lost their starter at times and they both fell apart in those games. I think that is the key for this offense to work.

It took Oregon until the bowl game to find a decent replacement for Dixon and look what happened.

Hopefully Franklin can develop depth at QB better than Borges.

i think Hangar 18 on GH2 is impossible to pass. I play on expert, and Ive gotten to 97% God knows how many times, yet never passed it.

Im a big fan of:

Even Rats - gh1
hold on loosely - gh80s
sharp dressed man - gh1
more than a feeling - gh1
sweet child of mine - gh2
the metal - gh3 (i have not yet passed it on expert, but its a fun challenge)
cant be saved - gh3 (bonus track)
when we were young - gh3
tripping on a hole in a paper heart - gh2
jessica - ggh2
beast and the harlot - gh2
gemini - gh2
bark at the moon - gh1
fat lip - gh1
texas flood - gh1

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I totally forgot about Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart. I haven't played the 360 version of GH2 lately (that song and a few others were omitted from the PS2 version) and I overlooked it.

Great song. Fun to play.

Hangar 18 on expert, bud, that's a tall order. I couldn't touch that. Hard is all I can handle there.

YouTube.com has a clip of Megadeth's Dave Mustaine trying to play that song on GH2 ... he was terrible. I'll find that.
