News of the day, 1/15

Hey everyone. We've got a few Auburn-related morsels of information to share. It's been a big day at HABOTN headquarters because, as you probably don't know or care, Apple founder Steve Jobs delivered his keynote address at the Macworld Expo.

That included the unveiling of "the world's thinnest notebook."

Yeah, yeah. I know. You don't care. I'll prove a short synopsis at the bottom for the 6% who care.

We so incredibly humble that you'd spend an average of 67 seconds per day reading the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

So what if there is no defensive coordinator. The show must go on. Auburn released its tentative spring schedule today, which included a small surprise.

Practice starts Feb. 28. The A-Day game will be held on March 29. Auburn will take time off during spring drills for Spring Break, which runs from March 17-21. Coach Tommy Tuberville generally doesn't like doing that. Last year's spring practices were over before Spring Break began.

I don't pretend to be a recruiting expert. I leave that to guys like Bryan Matthews and Jeffrey Lee and Jason Caldwell, who spend years analyzing these kids. I will say, though, that Auburn's recruiting class seems to be gaining significance. The group Tuberville, Inc., brought in last season was outstanding. Those three freshmen linemen performed way above expectations. Now the Tigers are emphasizing ultra-fast wideouts and they're committing by the half dozen. Surely a few of these kids will play next year. Auburn had a huge hole at WR and the coaches did what they're supposed to do -- find guys to fill the hole. I'm highly interested to see how this kind of speed translates in Tony Franklin's wide-open offensive system.

Injured basketball players Rasheem Barrett (ankle) and Quan Prowell (knee) practiced on Tuesday after missing work on Monday afternoon. Both are expected to play against LSU on Wednesday night.

APPLE ZONE
*************

So the new Apple notebook: Very slim. It's 3/4" at its widest point and fits easily into a manila envelope. The downside is that it includes a sluggish 1.6 GHz Intel processor (to conserve energy), has no optical drive and will cost $1,799.

I'll stick with my Powerbook G4 a while longer.

I'm a Mac geek and proud of it. I'm not one of those conscientious-objector guys, though. I attended elementary school in San Diego during the early 1980s and Apple computers filled our lab.

Phillip Pierre Louis, running a 4.25 it says on one website...is this possible for a high schooler?

muunuu... "The big deal is we don't have a basketball team" ..

You make me sick.
Pathetic ...

what makes you sick? The fact that we don't have a Men's basketball program or the fact that it's the truth?

My apologies to the women's squad. They have been pretty good for a long time.

I saw Montae Pitts run a 4.29 in 2001 or '02. That's pretty close.

He was in high school at the time.

That is cool, Jay. Now if they'd make an iPhone that good for business. Next iteration will be here before you know it.

Alexander Wright ran a 4.19. Bo Jackson and Dieon Sanders ran equal times. It's possible.

McCalebb looks like he's faster than Pierre-Louis on film.

I agree with you on the iPhone.

It's a toy as it stands. It's my belief that it'll be much more useful by the third generation.

The company that created the software that make the iPhone so unique is supposed to sell the technology to other manufacturers according to a slot that was done on 60 minutes. Wish they would.

I saw that 4.25 for P-Louis on Marshall's blog and nowhere else. That's, like, the Holiday kid at LSU fast.

We've got about 9 WR's on scholarship and 5 or 6 in this incoming class. We have a challenge to coach these guys to become better receivers. Rod Smith and M Billings were the only 2 receivers I saw with dependable receiver talent. The spread seems to get receivers open more easily than AB's schemes so maybe the young talent can produce in that environment.

4.25 is the 40 speed listed on scout.com

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay does some of the guys seem a bit to small for the sec. I know you can't coach speed but i don't see these guys breaking many tackles. I don't know what Fannin runs the 40 in but it couldn't be more than a 4.4 . He ways around 220. I just think there are bigger backs and wr that can run. All I can see is Markeeth Cooper all over again with some of these recruits. Do you think this a vallid point?

These guys are BOTH bigger than Markeith. Both faster as well. Markeith was my dog. Nice guy.

9:04 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Markeith Cooper was an excellent arena player for a long time. Franklin's offense is arena-like in some ways. They still have some size: Fannin, Tate, Slaughter and LaRon Byrd (if he chooses Auburn) ...

Just picked up another verbal from a DE, Derrick Lykes. This is an odd one as this kid is injured and has completely fallen out of the recruiting game. He wasn't ever really mentioned as a prospect for Auburn. With guys like Robert Quinn out there I'm just sort of surprised.

If you're worried about rankings this one kills it as he has not one star...he's torn his knee.

9:08 PM

Size and speed, Enrique Davis. He will be in summer workouts.

9:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I never knew Chris Slaughter had size Jay, he looked like the smallest player on the field.

9:31 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Slaughter is THIN, but he's quite tall for a wideout. He's a jumper, too.

re: Enrique. Definitely. He's big and so is the other Florida TB they're recruiting. The one who is down to Auburn and Clemson. Forgot his name.

I wrote something about Lykes for the Wednesday section. He had an ankle injury -- much like the one I had two years ago. Fell off the scene. I'll be interested to see what happens to him. That's your Sleeper To Watch.

I wouldn't get to worried about the star ratings. I personally think they don't mean very much.

If I find the time I am going to research the difference between star value and actual output on the college field. My prediction is that the two and three star prospects as a whole will prove to have far outperformed the higher rated recruits.

AU Math, and you other clowns-

When you use the word "to" it helps if you use it correctly. "Too" means "also" "to" is a preposition (from what i can remeber from my ENG001 days).

Probably has JG rolling in his early grave reading this terrible grammar.

Eric Smif is the other one, Jay.

"Probably has JG rolling in his early grave reading this terrible grammar."

This is a fragment. Please correct this sentence.

7:48 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

so should I have said, I wouldn't get "also" worried about ...

I think you are perhaps incorrect on this one TOO ... Jay?

7:52 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

... and TOO, the personal pronoun "I" should always be capitalized.

I have heard of English 101, but where do they teach English 001? That must be a class for athletes at UA.

By the way, I can whip your butt TOO.

I often avoid using "too" by using "as well." That's your annual HABTON grammar tip.

I don't know. Maybe the fact that you support the men's team and act like they don't exist. Why would good players want to come to Auburn when there are only 500 people at home basketball games?

Besides the fact that Lebo can't cheat to recruit like every other school.

don't support*
(obliviously)

as for the Apple stuff..
I'd take speed and performace over size and weight.

However if I were a professional who traveled I might would be interested since performance requirements wouldn't be as great; and the less weight would add up over the countless times you had to pick it up.

I just can't stand waiting on programs to load or editing processing to get done.

9:58 AM

I obviously obliviously typed the wrong word.

How deep is the bench for the LSU game? 7 or 9?

Of course the only reason 2 of the 5 would be off the court is from the previous injury limiting their time tonight; but assuming the 5 starters can't go the full time.

How bout the recruiting push AU has been making. Its pretty impressive. The new O is a pretty big recruiting draw. Just saw we have yet another WR coming in.

10:31 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

muunuu ... I am not exactly sure what your point is or what you are trying to say, but I am trying. Help me understand what you are talking about.

I would like to set the record straight TOO. I support the men's basketball program at AU. I support AU everything. I am an AU alumnus. I am an AU man. My frustration is with Lebo. He has had ample opportunity to assemble the kind of program we would all like to have, and he has been completely unable to do so. We are in no better position than we were before his arrival. As a matter of fact, we seem to be going in the opposite direction.

You are right, apparently Lebo doesn't cheat, and that is good. The truth is, you don't have to cheat to recruit and sign good players. You have to give them something to believe in. These young guys can believe in AU. I'm just not sure that they can believe in Jeff Lebo.

Don't make me rear back on you. I will. You grammar geeks take a seat or take it to the al.com Free For All where flames are posh.

I think I know why you are anonymous. You seem to have a thing for posh rears and such.

11:02 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

What happens after you "rear" back?

11:03 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not Lebo's fault that the AU fanbase doesn't show up or even acknowledge the fact there is a team at a big SEC school (unless we were good, then there would magically be a lot of AU fans intrested in basketball)

I don't see how you can blame Lebo. "Don't ever cheat and jeopardize our football program."

"Hi, *big name recruit* don't you want to come to AU. We can't offer you anything on the side; and you will be playing in front of no one even at home games in the SEC; no not even AU fans show up.. but don't you want to come to AU?"

If I were a basketball player, I'd rather go to a school where at least the fans show up. What's the point of 'representing AU' when the fans don't even go to support?

12:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

The rear-back stuff was great.

The latest "chatter" is that Paul Rhoads, Pitt's D.C., is all but hired at Auburn.

Someone told me JOX in Birmingham is reporting this as fact?

I had someone call me to say Rhoads was IN AUBURN interviewing today, though I am having trouble corroborating that. I don't think it's true.

AU Math:

Since the vision is clearly floating around suspiciously in your mind, refer to Ike Turner for your answer- not Richard Simmons.

By the way, are you not anonymous? Is your actual name Auburn Math?

2:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wasn't Paul Rhodes almost hired before Chizik was in '02? It seems like they gave him some incentive to stay at Pitt back then. If it is him, he has the gameplan to beat WVU next year.

3:03 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, that is actually my name.

3:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Rhodes is from the old days. I remember chasing him around (via rotary phone) back in 02 or so.

Seemed like a nice guy. He's done some good work at Pitt.
