News of the day, 3/12
Hey everyone. I have decided to do something I consider somewhat novel on Thursday. Inspired by Phil Collins' two-continent concert for Live Aid in 1985, I'm going to cover Auburn's 7 a.m. practice, drive to Atlanta, cover Auburn's game against Vanderbilt in the SECs (2:15 CDT) and then take it back to the house.
It'll be fun.
Auburn baseball's promotional czar, Dan Froehlich (Fray-lick), noted recently that the program is providing copies of the shaved-head photo in exchange for $10 donations to the American Cancer Society. It's the image at the top of today's blog. Copies may be purchased through the university's web site.
The picture was a central element in what was a really neat story about how the team showed its support for Joseph Sanders' mother, Barbara. She recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. If you missed the story, read it here: Auburn baseball team unites in support of teammate's mother
There was talk today on WMSP about my blog comments from yesterday, which weren't particularly positive about the station's morning hosts. I'm planning to appear on the station's afternoon show on Thursday to discuss the matter. The HOTTIES know I'm not a fan of Barry McKnight or the other guy because they serially dis me and the Advertiser for mostly silly reasons. Labeling me a "moron," or eliciting similar rhetoric from friendly callers, has been going on since the late 1990s. Is this considered evolution?
Also, a caller to the afternoon show ("The Roundtable" with Amos and Bag) wondered why I would go on the air Tuesday morning and then "attack" the morning hosts on the blog. Being on someone's show doesn't indicate friendship or even respect.
The only time I ever appeared on the show without being asked came like five years ago, when Barry questioned the legitimacy and legacy of rap group Public Enemy. Chuck D and Terminator X deserved backup. I was happy to oblige by calling in.
There was a mildly interesting indirect exchange between Jeff Lebo and Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings at the SEC Tournament press conferences today. Lebo said he was glad to not be playing Vanderbilt in Nashville because ``they haven't played as well away from home."
Vandy is 19-0 at home and 6-6 away. Seems reasonable. Stallings was asked about that and didn't seem to like Lebo's statement.
``That seems to be the thing that people want to throw on us," Stallings said. ``I'm guessing if we were 17-2 at home instead of 19-0 that people wouldn't be talking about a road record. We'll see."
OK. So a HOTTIE, who asked to remain nameless, emailed this nugget: "I didn't know about Live aid until I googled it just now." He is ebaying the DVDs in hopes of ingesting all the 80s goodness those concerts provided. See, young people, Phil Collins was cutting edge back then because he played the London show early, took the Concorde to Philadelphia and played a second Live Aid gig that night. Being a bi-continent musician was big news back then.
So that got me reminicing about the concert. I was at summer camp. My madre taped it for me. I was SO geeked to see the Duran Duran set because I couldn't have been a bigger fan. Mid-way through the performance, Simon Le Bon absolutely mauled a note that remains stuck in my head. Check it out.
It's at the 2:54 mark of this here video. Check out guitarist Andy Taylor's skyward gaze after that horrid display. Oh damn.

Jay, This morning it seemed Barry thought you and him where friends. He made it seem like everything was good between ya'll and the beef was mostly between you and John. So, what is the real story?
It's mostly with the other guy, yes, but "sandpaper and silk" are inextricably linked.
I hear ya. But, why the "other guy" reference? Oh, and are you talking about the afternoon show with Doug and Josh or the Finebaum show? Keep up the good work Jay, I enjoy it.
I'm talking about the Amos/Moon offering from 12-2. I just re-worded the blog to make that clear.
Thanks.
2 observations about sprint football, because I can't stand college baseball (thank you very much). Even worse, I can't stand Auburn baseball.
Any who...
Hot has extremely long arms. He's very quick for his size. But those arms are what really sets him apart coupled with his instincts.
Also, our receivers look A LOT better than they have in a long time. Zachary, Slaughter, and even Dunn look really, really good in this offense. I can see now what the Slaughter hype has been all about. He's a talent above the norm here at Auburn.
*spring that is...
Keyboards and spellcheck are not friends of mine.
How do you know so much about Sgt. Slaughter? I think yesterday was his first real practice of the spring.
Well, if you are trying to get the blog hyped up, this is a good way to go about it. Get in a radio war and first thing you know, you'll have every nut in town on here, present company excluded of course. I guess it could be fun. Then again, it might suck like a vacuum cleaner. Time will tell.
Crudup: The list for the top 75 College BBall players of all time came out today. Chuck Person was #7.
Ron Mexico: You got into an argument about this with someone, but I thought you should know. There have been some birds flying around singing about a two QB sysytem on the plains, per CTT.
Jay you are a true S1W for defending Public Enemy! I knew I liked you for a reason (other than this hot blog of course!) You tell this afternoon show that if they want beef, the HOTTIES will give em all than can chew. We got your back!
What can you tell us about this early morning scrimmage that's not really a scrimmage at JH tomorrow? Is it open to the public?
His athleticism vs any DB we have out there. I watched him. He's like the Marquis Daniels of football. It's very easy to him.
(Cont.) from the previous thread
Boobs
It was an S1W!
The information I have is that the scrimmage will begin around 7:30 a.m. in the Stadia d'Auburn. Open to the public? I didn't ask. Sorry. My guess is that it won't be be open because Auburn generally promotes open scrimmage and this one was not promoted.
Check out that Duran Duran video I added. I remembered the exact moment when that happened ... and I hadn't seen that footage since 85.
This is not an open scrimmage. It's on out of the box, half scrimmage.
What's an SW1?
Chuck was #7 all time in college bball period?
Hmm....
The S1Ws were a group of militant dudes who (presumably) provided strong-arm support of Public Enemy back in the day.
You remember U.N. Jefferson's Tri Lambs from Revenge of the Nerds? They were kinda like that.
Night of the Living Baseheads
I heard that on Sirius' "BackSpin" channel on Sunday night.
I prefer Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos. I got a letter from the government ... the other day ... I opened and read it ... it said they were suckers ... they wanted me for their army or whatever ... picture me givin' a damn, I said NEVER.
That album is a classic! Dont forget Rebel without a Pause.
Yes...the rhythm, the rebel
Without a pause...I'm lowering my level...The hard rhymer...where you never been I'm in...You want stylin'...you know it's time again
This is why the HOTTIES own the world ... no PE references at PMarsh's blog. Never. He thinks an S1W is the play Georgia ran against Horace Willis in 02.
Phred: i still got my money on a two quarterback system barring chris todd's arm doesn't fall off. This might sound somewhat crazy but i mean a true two quarterback system like 65% one guy and 35% the other guy.
Why the hell would a local radio rip a guest? The guests make the show. I have never heard WMSP, but i do know AM sucks therefor they should be gratful that anybody knows they exist. And Jay, easy on the blog pub next thing you know we will have the guys from phillip marshall's blog where the comments consist of 342 WDE's
I would also like to put a wager on byrom isom starting at guard next season.
Horace Willis! Haha!
Where are they today?
Isn't Alvin Jefferson in the NBA? I could have sworn I saw him playing recently.
I like making fun of PMarsh for being old.
You all have to understand, though, that I'm spearheading his ASWA Hall of Fame candidacy push. He's one of the all-time greats. We may have a slightly different approach journalistically speaking, but he's a pretty incredible dude.
I think you took the easy way out and are hiding behind the keyboard. What a wuss.
Hiding behind the keyboard?
I was on the show Tuesday morning and haven't received any requests from Barry McKnight since then.
I will be on The Roundtable this afternoon and Friday afternoon.
Who is hiding? Don't just believe what the other guy says because he said it. Examine the facts.
