Halftime ... and Third Quarter

Pretty decent half of football for the Auburn Tigers.

The offense was just short of dominant. Fourteen points isn't awe-inspiring, but two fumbles near the goal line undermined a pair of productive drives. Defense? Dominant. Check the numbers.

THIRD QUARTER

AUBURN 24, USM 6: TE Shawn Nelson scores on a 1-yard pass from Austin Davis. Drive covered only 25 yards. An errant pass from Kodi Burns was intercepted, giving USM lovely field position. Two-point conversion failed.

AUBURN 24, USM 0: Kodi Burns scores on a 1-yard run. He came in for the final snap of a 12-play drive. It covered 75 yards.

AUBURN 17, USM 0: Wes Byrum hits a 52-yard FG. That's a career best. His previous best was 49 yards against South Florida last year. Drive covered minus-2 yards in four plays.

  • Kodi Burns now in at quarterback to begin the third quarter. Todd regained the starting role during the second drive.

  • Southern Miss currently has nine drives to its credit. Six of them have been three-and-outs. Only one USM drive has progressed beyond the AU 45.

  • Southern Miss has 24 rushing yards. Total.

  • Auburn's defense opened the season with 102 minutes of shutout work.

  • Robert Dunn appeared to score on a punt return, but the play was diluted by an illegal block. I'm not sure who was responsible for the penalty.

  • Tristan Davis went down with an injury. He's getting treatment on his right ankle. Doesn't look particularly serious. They're taping it up now ... I'm guessing a relatively mild sprain. He returned a few minutes later on kickoff return.

AT THE HALF
Offense
AUBURN: 230 (63 run, 167 pass)
USM: 83 (21 run, 62 pass)

Chris Todd: Playing well
Kodi Burns: Not playing. See above.

Jay, you do a great job, dude. You're really good at your job. You've also proved that you listen to your loyal "subscribers" to fuel some of your input, which is very wise. It helps shape what is the most informative opinion out there associated with Auburn football in the media.

Peace

it should be 28-0, but i'll take 14-0
auburn is finally playing like a top ten team.

Thanks for your support as always, Crudup.

This game should be 28-0. No doubt.

i think the offense is looking much better. only 36 plays in the first half, though. 6 quarters without allowing a point this year is impressive.

aw. fiddlesticks.
Dont ya hate it when a great play gets called back thanks to a completely irrelevant penalty? But still, Dunn is dangerous this year
Once again. Stupid penalty takes back a TD.

This game should be a blowout already.

Wow. If that return stands Dunn suddenly comes a legend. Who returns two punts for TDs in back to back games? Teddy Ginn?

Cotton, if by playing like a top 10 team you are comparing AU to what Ohio St. is doing (as of now, losing to Ohio), then you are dead on.

From what I can keep up with out here in Cali, it sounds like we have come a long way, but still have a ways to go.

Another great return by Dunn on the called-back TD. He looks like a different guy now ... running forward with purpose rather than dancing.

Fumbles and fumbles only have kept our score below 30 so far.

I haven't seen much Thorpe action or ANY Harry Adams.

Todd back in. What's the story, Jay? Pain?

They don't need Thorpe playing right now. USM's drives have been short for the most part.

Burns is standing on the sideline ... apparently ready to go. I just think his drive produced almost nothing and they want to give Todd a chance to get the mojo going again?

I guess so. So much for Kodi's confidence though. Be interesting to see how this develops and if Kodi's dad steps in again.

But Todd's simply getting it done right now.

For crying out loud!!! Tristan Davis!!??

'atta way Kodi.
I've been partial to Kodi in the QB race, but Todd has shown the offense can flourish with him under center.

Tristan isn't seriously injured. They're taping him up right now.

Jason Bosley out, too, though he's looking at a left-ankle situation.

Also doesn't appear serious.

Kodi scores at the end of a drive.

How it probably should be.

Switch him to RB because TD can't stay healthy, redshirt Eric Smith (we'll need him in the future).

Just some thoughts.

JGT and the Hotties, thanks for keeping things up to date.

Kodi needs to learn to run the offense without relying on the physical(running)aspect. Todd is running the offense by the book. If Kodi can learn that from Todd and then add the physical aspect only when necessary, he can take us to another level. Kodi only looked at one receiver (granted Bilings ws open deep).

Looks like the LBs are still focused on stopping the run and challenging USM to keep making those lookins and TE behind the LBs.

Kodi just threw the shutout away. Should have run. He's too worried about making the right thing happen

Kodi many times doesn't turn his shoulders and plant his feet when he passes. He looks like he's throwing darts in a bar instead of a football. If he will watch what Todd does, he can learn.

That was a bad play all around for Kodi.

Interception: Bad.

Weird decision: Bad.

Chris Todd: Not angry about it.

With todd playing lights out, Kodi might've felt he needed to make a big play, and forced a pick instead.

Deandre Green is really good

I think that's right on the money, cotton.

Your comment; not the pass.

From my weekly "Glance" that ran yesterday:

"USM's DeAndre Brown is a legitimate player."

He's a bad man.

Tristan is back on the field.

So is Bosley.

Stopped the 2 point try. I say put Kodi back in....OK...Todd is in. Notice on the flair to Dunn...Todd looks downfield then Passes out to Dunn. Kodi is tending to stare down one receiver like he did in the spring game. I still say put Kodi in and don't let hime run. Don't want hime to bust the stitches and he needs to be forced to run the D.
