Getting things started on a Wednesday
Hey everyone. Thanks for making Tuesday the second biggest day in HABOTN history, which is no small feat. Tony Franklin Day, Oct. 8, remains in the top spot. Not bad for a reasonably typical Tuesday.
SCHEDULE UPDATE: Auburn will hold an afternoon practice today, which I am told again will be relatively hard-hitting. They've taken that up several notches this week. I am planning to miss this practice session, but will make up for it with throughout-the-afternoon availability, a video and, possibly, an afternoon campfire.
I'll pass along some actual Auburn news around noon.
RING OF FIRE INDUCTIONS: After conferring with a majority of RoF members on Tuesday, our list of new inductees has been set. We will honor them at 2 p.m. on Thursday with a live ceremony here at the HABOTN. We will fete each new member with a unique blog post acknowledging his or her greatness. We'll be serving Yuengling (fruit punch for the younger HOTTIES) and calorie-free prime rib that Tony Franklin recently has developed with his severance package.
THANKS FROM JAY: Big ups for lifting my spirits after the Advertiser's parent company yesterday announced a 10% across-the-board cutback. The HOTTIES are awesome. Thanks for your continued support.

Taylor- I believe Jay stated yesterday he was going to lower the 75% due to a couple of the powers he has talked to. I am pretty sure Spina was one of them. So I believe he believes it does have some significance.
Jay, since we have moved on to the next blog post, here's another question for you. Do you really believe Tubs will be willing to make the changes to his staff?
It matters. Like I was saying on yesterday's post, there are two schools of thought among those people -- some agree with Spina and some think he's nuts.
Spina probably is the most pro-Tuberville trustee out there, so consider that.
When I say "pro-Tuberville" ... I mean overall since Jetgate.
Will Tuberville make staff changes? Yes.
Jay, your thoughts on the expansion of the playbook, for real or just more coach speak to keep us fans occupied?
Any ideas of who Tubs may actually get rid of? I say all, Knox, Ensminger and Nall need to go. Do you see him getting rid of those three or just one of them?
Just Win- I have a feeling the new OC will have something to say about the number of assistants that are retained or let go. JMO.

I am in agreement that 2 of the 3 of the assistants should go. I dont think that Nall should go. I think he is one of the better off. line coaches in america. He has produced alot of real quality offensive linemen. Knox on the other hand....well lets just not go there.

Knox needs to go too...he can stay and coordinate recruiting but that is all. The only Id be ok with still coaching is Gran.

Jay, I don't know if you caught it on the other thread, but the likelihood of Tubberville being gone has been adopted as our official suck index. Currently we stand at 75% suck, down from an all time high of 90% suck.
Jay, do you think Tuberville's job hinges on our game against Ole Miss?
Tuberville really likes all of those long-term guys, but Gran and Ensminger are in a different class.

Knox is a given to be kicked to the curb - look at AU's WR production during his tenure.
Personally I think that if CTT stays, then his entire offensive staff should be shown the door.

J Moon on the lunch bunch show has said on several occassions that Nall and Knox are out if Tubbs stays. Says he has sources that confirm this for him and Jay has stated he knows the sources and thinks Moon's sources are reliable.
However, I am not speaking for Jay, just repeating what I think I read.
Those two coaches are in the inner circle, I guess you could say.

I think Nall would be gone, which is a shame. I'm 100% certain that he's an excellent coach.

Personally, I think Tuberville should leave the selection of the position coaches up to the new offensive coordinator. I am not sure why anyone would want Nall or Gran gone. They are a couple of the best at what they do. As for Knox or Ensminger, I would expect them to be at risk.
Ensminger is a long time Tuberville friend. They were friends before he came to Auburn.
Is it really a good idea to keep Knox as the recruiting coordinator?
All of this talk about circles makes me think of Jack Burns from Meet the Parents.
As for the last game being 10x important, I understand that, but at the moment, the likelihood of us winning that one are about as much as John McCain winning a Mr. Personality contest. It could happen, but it ain't likely.
By the way, the recruiting coordinator has to be a coach. If Knox is gone, so is his title as recruiting coordinator. Andy Lutz is the real recruiting coordinator anyways, he just is not a "Coach."
From what I have heard Knox is a great recruiter, so it would make very good sense to keep him. You also can't underestimate the value of the relationships he has developed with high school coaches.
Steve- I give us a better than average chance at an Upset in the bama game. Trust me about this, that game is stressed all year long and game planned all year long.

Question for you recruiting guys:
If a college offers now and a recruit accepts, can the college take the offer away before signing day? I have heard they cannot, but can make it difficult for the prospect to want it. I understand that if the college doesn't go through with the offer the high school coach will make life very difficult for them going forward, but I was just wondering.
The NCAA, but they do not put a limit of "advisors", "consultants" or staff personnel. Phillip Lolley and Andy Lutz are big contributors to this team and always have been.
eddie, if Bama comes into that game undefeated and in line for their 13th MNC and we win, Tuberville will have his Pope robes returned to him.

Someone help me with this. I've been wondering this for a while now, and I don't recall an OC coming in without ANY of "his" people, unless they were promoted from within the program. Now I may just not be noticing what's happening around college football, but it seems like there would be more continuity that way. It may be a different situation, but it's almost like a school hiring a head coach then telling him. "Oh yeah, here are your coordinators."
Colleges can pull offers before you sign. Happened to some tackle for Georgia last year, didn't it? He made a verbal too late or something.
There was also some case where a kid had an offer to Hawaii and they pulled it, and he actually sued them. Can't remember the specifics though.
I think the offense is suffering right now... CTT needs and infusing of new blood adn direction on the offense. we should run a hybred of the spread along with traditional i-formation and smash mouth football. the new OC will also be allowed to bring in staff that sees his vision... its time to build a better mousetrap...

I don't believe a school is tied to a recruit until they actually sign a letter of intent. If that occurs the kid is tied to the school unless he sits out a year.
I'd like to know what time Scarbinsky's interview was with Spina. It goes right to the heart of the topic during his Roundtable appearance yesterday. When doug asked (this is all a paraphrase) if given the ultimatum would CTT make significant O staff changes including cutting some/all of the BBQ boys lose. Scarbinsky made a great point when he said CTT shouldn't have to be given an ultimatum to do what was best for the program. You can go along with that only if you think cutting the BBQ is the right thing to do. Scarb also said, if CTT said, "No!" That would be a bit of an answer in itself and CTT could take a cue from Steve Miller and Take the Money and Run. (Cobra that's your green light on modified lyric time).
So, unless CTT volunteers to make changes looks like he'll be given an ultimatum. I wouldn't expect he would make those changes (publicly) until the end of the season right?
aunmobile, I am very against a hybrid, except to allow us to limp through the rest of the season. I think the formations make us too predictable. If we are going to run the spread I don't think we should be under center unless it is an obvious running situation.
I don't believe in giving a coach an ultimatum to make specific changes. Either Tuberville is a good head coach that can identify the changes that need to be made, or he needs to move on. To dictate his staff to him doesn't make much sense to me.
That should have been "wouldn't" make those changes...

Steve - I think the ultimatum is implied from Scarbinsky column. Spina said, "I think Tommy made a couple of staff mistakes, and I'm going to fight for him to have the opportunity to correct those mistakes."
Winning out sounds like a crazy thought, although it may not be as crazy as it first seems. Contrary to public opinion, I think we have a lot of talent on this team. I also think that these kids probably feel like their backs are against the wall. If the defense plays solid we will have a chance. I wouldn't call it likely, but it is possible.
I'm holding on to the hope of the PapaJohns.com bowl. I won't have to drive so far this year.
The one caveat here for AU is this - when they are an underdog going into the Iron Bowl, there have been a few times where they have pulled off the upset - 72, 89, and 02 come to mind.
I've always suffered from blind optimism. RE: the Iron Bowl - not so much.
Monica, who can better evaluate the coaches, Spina or Tuberville? If it is Spina, lets name him head coach now. I do believe Tuberville deserves the chance to correct his mistakes. I think he took a big step when he gave the boot to Franklin, although I am thinking he may have done that too quickly. I expect Tuberville to make the necessary changes without being told what those changes have to be. If he cannot, he shouldn't be the head coach.

Personally, I am not very optomistic of a bowl. It does give us added practice time, so you about have to take it. Anyone know a Bama fan we can borrow a "Shreveport or bust" sign from?

This is an article about a kid who is suing for a college rescinding an oral scholarship offer. As teh law stands, no oral or even written offer is binding until the Letter of Intent is signed.
ScottAtl- Bama has depth issues. That is why if you can keep it close till the end you have a great shot. That is their weakness.

Monica, if Tuberville has the friendship blinders you mention, he doesn't need to be the head coach. This staff has been very successful and I seriously doubt that is due to the good ole boy network.

I'm trying to be optimistic, but it's as though you know what's going to happen especially with the same scenario occurring the last several games. Get all excited with a lead going into the half, then either not make adjustments, or just get too tired to keep going and watch the team just get beat. I hope we can sneak one over Ole Miss, there's no excuse to not beat UT-M, but those last two just look like a beat down waiting to happen.

Team was clicking, everything was going, then there was that three and out "uh-oh" moment, then you watch the wheels fall off. I hope the coaches and players, whoever they may end up being, can figure out how to play a complete game and at the very least compete at the end for a win.

Eddie, you numbers are closer to what I would predict except for the Bama game. I do think Bama will be undefeated at that point. LSU appears to have finally adjusted to the Les Miles philosophy and appears to be on a downturn.
Should we win the Iron Bowl this season, the entire Bama Nation would likely have a simultaneous bowel movement that would register on those seismographs at LSU.

The bama game all hinges on how we play from this point on. If we come out and get a win at Ole Miss and play Georgia close, then I don't think a win at bama to finish 7-5 is out of question, even if bama is undefeated.

I guess in a way I am more loyal than most. What I really want to see is a team that looks prepared and executes. I don't like to lose a game, but sometimes the other team will be better. I just like to see our players live up to their potential, and we haven't been seeing that.
Remember how excited the receivers were when we went to the spread? They have to be the most disappointed of all. I do believe the challenge for this coaching staff is to get them involved in the offense, and it has to be more than just quick outs. The intermediate passing game has to be improved.

Monica, Shula was given a choice, he could keep his job if he fired his assistants, or he could be fired. Like most of his coaching decions, he decided to punt on 1st and goal from the 1.
Something you all may want to noodle on. Why are all our recruits sticking with us? I just saw where two of our receiver commitments are saying their commitment to Auburn is solid. Why do the recruits seem to be more loyal than the fans? Is it that they have been told more about where Tuberville intends to head with this program?

Of course not, last year all we heard when Bama lost was, "these are ShOOla's recruits". Funny how we aren't hearing anything about ShOOla's players this year.
Not that I want to defend bammer, but they have some impact guys playing this year that Saban brought in. Cody, Jones, Ingram, Maze, etc. Their team seems to be a blend of the Shula recruits and Saban recruits.
Peter Frankenbummer thinks the outcome will be better than my day started and more like my day is currently going. 2-10 in 2010 looks less likely.

A 5-6 Auburn team, going into JHW and beating an undefeated bammer team, has to be a doomsday type scenario for bammer fans.
i want to agree with you jay. it just seems like the more confident everyone feels about bama and gives auburn no shot, thats when bama is in trouble

im thinking he will feel like he has unfinished business at AU. he will not want the bad taste in his mouth that this season has surely given him. he hasnt ever seemed like th guy how is itching to get to the NFL. he is a team guy - always has been
Team guy or not, Marks will leave if he's a first-round pick. Injuries have limited him to some degree this year. We'll have to see how his draft stock is affected.
I don't have any facts behind that Iron Bowl idea. It's just that Auburn isn't this bad. Everybody knows that. Things will come together at some point. I think Alabama is the most obvious place for that kind of revival.
Thank you, Jay! This is the Iron Bowl! This isn't some little rivalry that is a rivalry simply because of geography. These are two schools that are diometrically opposed to one another. You base an entire personality or potential friendship on the question "Auburn or Alabama?"
You really do throw out the records when these two teams play, especially, if the team down is Auburn. We win the big ones we are supposed to lose and lose the ones we are supposed to win.
I'm not saying we make it to 7, but I sure as heck haven;t counted us out.
I would like for AU to win that game, but their HC game game plan like a mother. While watching the TN or Ole Miss game, you could see them blitzing every other play, but they disguise so well from field level. They blitz from angle and with different players. Unless the OL can pick it up, our QB will not have time to throw. He will have to get rid of it quickly and must throw it deeper than 10 yards to make them stop bringing the house.

I did hear on ESPN that Herd felt bad for Auburn because if they were in another division they probably would be 2nd. They are not this bad.

I dont know what the herd has been watching this year...we are bad....no QB, no RB, offensive line has taken a step back, i cant even commnet on the receivers b/c who knows how good or bad they are?

I agree to some degree. Injury bug and the O-Line. I will say that the WR's can not get any seperation which does not help anyone else.
I think the receivers have actually been the biggest issue with this offense.
As for Todd, I am not sure why anyone would want him to leave. He was clearly the best QB option we had early in the season. Hopefully his arm heals.
As for Auburn upsetting Alabama, I understand why Jay would say that. Auburn isn't as bad as everyone thinks and I don't really believe Bama is as good. I also think we have more talent that Alabama. Yes folks, I do believe that.
I also believe that Bama is playing much smarter team football and JPW is a big reason for that. Our team has yet to have the defining game where things begin to click. We always seem to have one of those. Last year I think it was against Arkansas. This year, I am still waiting to see it.

Agree with you Steve. The receivers have been our biggest problem, and they must do better for us to have a chance to win another sec game. And I agree with you on Chris Todd; the poor guy had a serious injury to his shoulder and isn't what he used to be. I've heard that he used to have a gun for an arm, and tend to believe it or Texas Tech never would have recruited him.
He had stretches where he played very well this season, but the lack of velocity on his passes is tough to overcome.
Here's hoping that he gets well and is able to contribute something next year.
Jay, I like what you say about AU and AL. It would indeed be the worst thing a bammer can imagine to have an undefeated season ruined by AU.

As far as the cuts. Jay..I would pay for this entertainment if it came to it. That's saying something cause I am cheap.. You put out a product worthy of a price. I know I'm not alone on this either. They are making cuts in my job too. damn this economy..
I have a question Jay. Which assitants will go away? And if you give names do you think those assitants know that they are losing their jobs and it kinda creates a lame duck mentality for those guys. I think you gotta get rid of all the assitants except for Gran.

The baby steps the offense took last week were uplifting to me. We simply need to keep improving each week from here on out. All the hiring/firing garb isn't really of interest to me as we can't do any of that til the season is over, i am interested in seeing how we do from here on out on the field, we have been running this offense for about 3 weeks now, i think we've got a real chance at an upswing in the next few weeks. A well fought victory with some small accomplishments against ole miss and an out of conference cupcake bode well for going into the uga and uat with some optimism and a sprinkle of momentum. Of course i have stated i'd bet my house on ole miss this week with that 6 point spread and what i've seen thus far.
I'm pretty sure todd opted to not have surgery and let it heal.
