Radio appearances forthcoming

I'll be making my Mobile-area return* today on WNSI-AM 1000 at 4:30 with "The Chicks".

WNSI streams online.

I'll also be on in Pensacola around 5, if you're down that way.

This is their site. They allegedly stream, though I haven't been able to make it work.

*=I quit my weekly segment with WNSP shortly after Neal McCready was fired last season. I miss the Mobile peeps. I hope you can catch this broadcast.

It would be great if we could hear you on the radio here in the Ham at some point!

You got some love this morning on the OD on JOX, albeit a bit anonymously. A caller was referencing the quote you had from Ben Tate preseason, about knowing whom the quarterback should be. The caller asked the OD guys if they remembered that quote and none of them did (big surprise). But I knew it came from from Jay G.

I tired calling in to the OD to follow it up and give you some credit, but I didn't feel like holding for 30 plus minutes just to talk to the two clowns and Del Greco.

No it was a woman who was there. She made the comment that she was in Tuberville's office and Tuberville told her to get on Finebaum and let him know it isn't over yet. That she was feeling bad for Brenda, receptionist, who was taking calls and had no idea what was going on. This woman so Dunn go in Tubs office and was informed what was happening.

Looking forward to the appearance, Jay.

Anonymous, could you give that another shot?

Also, for those concerned that an established OC or HC won't come to Auburn must be crazy. This is the SEC and this is the top tier. Nobody cares who failed or flopped before them. You replace somebody that either took a better offer or underperformed each time you take a job. And let's not forget about the giant money that comes with one of these positions.

Ok here is my last attempt.

There was a woman who was on Finebaum who claimed that she was in Tubs office 1:30pm yesterday. That she was there during all of this unfolding. It seems people know that she calls Finebaum and Tubs told her to make sure that Finebaum understands that this is not over yet.

She felt bad for "Brenda" who was receiving a number of phone calls and was not aware what had happened. Finebaum called the Media guy who also did not know until Finebaum told him to double check.

Whew!

interesting post from rivals:

I am not an insider but got this e-mail from a buddy of mine and though I would share it, TIFWIW.

...this came from a good friend of mine...this info was forwarded to
him...take it for what its worth...I have no clue whats going on

Alright here is as much as I know from my sources…these aren't the
fake sources you hear people refer to on the radio. Tuesday morning
at practice Franklin went nuts, beyond what you read in the paper,
not only was he running around like a nut on the practice field but
he would not allow any of the assistants to coach their positions, he
was trying to do everything. In the offensive meeting that same day
he really goes crazy a$$ nuts (a good friend of Franklin's said he
thinks Tony just lost it, like needs to go talk to somebody lost it),
he starts cussing out the players…in particular he calls Kodi Burns
out in front of everyone and says "Burns if you were worth a sh*t
you'd be playing, but your not!" He apparently became so hostile to a
particular lineman that he and the lineman were restrained. When this
occurs one of the assistant coaches tells him to calm down and
Franklin says "Fk you! Go tell Tubs, I don't give a fk what he says,
this is my offense!"

All of this is occurring while Tubs is in his CEO bubble…doing his
press conference other duties. When the assistants make Tub aware of
what took place at practice Tubs calls Franklin and tells him to meet
him first thing Wednesday morning in his office. Wednesday morning
Tubs tells Franklin he understands the stress but he will not
tolerate talking to the players on a personal level like that.
Franklin raises his voice to Tubs questioning how he runs the
program…Tubs then tells him to go to his office, get his stuff and
get lost.

You might interpret this as a save face for Tubs version of the story
but most of this came from a players Dad (the lineman that almost
came to blows with Franklin) and a coach who is a good, good friend
of Franklins. His last statement to me was…"This is all on Tubs, I
told him last year that while Franklin is a good friend he should not
hire him…there was no way he was going to be able to work with that
staff."

Bryan Matthews responds with this :

"I think there's a lot of truth in that. As I've said before, a lot went down at Tuesday's practice, which precipitated the final 24 hours of Franklin's reign."

3:50 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

that's craziness. especially B.Matt's response. it would certainly make a lot of sense. if that's the case, tell CTF to go enjoy a 6-pack or 2 of the High Life and chill out. he's got the time. maybe that's why he seemed so cool and relaxed as he was packing up his van. he had already got all his frustration out on the practice field.

3:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This comes about 5th hand, but per Franklin's dad:

Tuberville told Franklin that the board of trustees and the alumni were putting tremendous pressure on him to fire Franklin.

Basically, Tuberville had to either fire Franklin or face being fired himself if the offense didn't improve drastically.

4:03 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

"while Tubs is in his CEO bubble…doing his press conference other duties."

I certainly can buy that - sitting on his butt more likely. You think Saban stands idly by and lets his assts do all of the coaching?

4:05 PM
Blogger Bulldog354 said...

Anon,

If all of that actually transpired then it will only be a matter of time before the silence breaks...pretty intricate detail to be total bs I'm guessing

4:06 PM
Blogger michael said...

A lot of this second hand/reliable source stuff sounds a lot like hollywood bs to me. Would Rod Smith really have been that positive about practice if it was that nuts?

4:10 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Just wondering...
But wouldn't this have had to happen before Jay posted his practice report video from Tuesday. Smith comments that the coaches did more yelling, but does Burns look like someone who just got cussed out/totally embarrased? Would CTT let his players talk to the media if all this really went down???

I'm not saying it didn't happen, just cautious.

Interesting either way....

Blogger WDEwg said...

Maybe Rod was so glad to get some instructive coaching, that he'd take it however he could get it.

All the "old Tony is back" stuff, and they didn't understand it-- that sort of fits in with the account, too.

4:15 PM
Blogger Taylor said...

players arent gonna feed negative/detrimental info to the media. im sure tubs has countless speeches/warnings about that

4:16 PM
Blogger Bulldog354 said...

someone should just ask Tubs if it happened...then we'll know for sure

4:16 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

The video I saw of Burns- -asking him did he rely on his feet too much -- I can't remember when I saw that, but yeah -- he did look a little shaken up. But at the time I thought that was just frustration at the question. It could have also been a week ago. it's all running together at this point.

4:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

"A lot of this second hand/reliable source stuff sounds a lot like hollywood bs to me."

Nah, it's not hollywood unless Kodi said to Franklin, "I DON'T WANT... YER LIIF!" and they had Foo Fighters playing on the practice field.

4:19 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Great. Now I am trying to analyze body language in that video... Burn rubs his face which expresses doubt. Then he furows brow which indicates frustration. Then he strokes his arm which means... flirtation!?!

I need a life.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I'll say that a lot of that email/Rivals.com post (I deleted one because it was a re-post) was pretty much right on.

That offensive meeting was a real barn-burner, so to speak.

Berating players in meetings is something that doesn't happen at Auburn. I mean, that's not how this coaching staff operates, so I'm sure that didn't go over well.

4:49 PM
Blogger michael said...

About the players not giving negative comments... I would think if Rod Smith was going to misrepresent a nuckin futs practice, he would have been more vague, like they normally are. Maybe I should re-look at that stuff, but I had the feeling he thought they were turning things around and it was a positive development.

And Kristina... if Kodi Burns was NOT displaying doubt and frustration the way the season has been going, then there would have been cause for alarm. The flirtation thing... well that's just Kodi being Kodi I guess.

This story has killed my work productivity the last couple of days. Why will they not block this site at work?

4:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Also to consider: Rod Smith isn't one to take criticism real hard. He came through as a walk-on and doesn't mind some harsh words.

Some of the other players weren't as accepting.

Shouldn't have the head coach had some idea that the staff wouldn't mesh with CTF before he was hired? If so, then why make the hire? If not, then he didn't do his homework or think thru it. Either way, it all comes back to CTT.

Taylor:

Although I don't buy the info from a friend of a friend verbatim, something definitely happened to cause the boom to be lowered when it did. IMHO, the daily coaches meeting was where it came to a head. More than likely, CTT and the BBQ Boys had already started making plans to implement more ace formation and I-backfield sets with CTF's spread plays. You know, in an attempt to utilize the talent that Auburn has now and win games. CTF possibly resisted, saying it's either my offense or else. I don't know about you guys, but if I go to my boss and say it's my way or the highway guess what....I'm thumbing a ride home.

Now yesterday, I thought that CTF got bum-rushed by the BBQ Boys and subsequently railroaded by Tubbs. Today I'm more inclined to think that Franklin simply didn't want to ease into the spread (i.e. take the time to recruit the players necessary to run it). CTT and staff knew that the players they have were built to run the ball and wanted to integrate that philosophy with Franklin's in order to remain competetive and cover their respective arses until the could put together a team to pass the football. Don't get me wrong, I still think Knox needs to find another position to coach at Auburn (waterboys maybe), but I think today that CTF simply didn't want to change his philosophy to accomodate Auburn's current talent. That is just an opinion and I'm gonna stop thinking about the why and start looking forward. Great bonfire last night everyone!

I heard that Franklin recommended painting the coach's lounge blue, because he thought it would be more imposing. Tuberville told him something like, "All Auburn, All Orange motha f*er!" Franklin then took it upon himself to paint the offensive side of the lounge blue. When Nall saw what he was doing, he sprinted to Tuberville and told on him. Tuberville ran into the office, did a belly-to-back suplex on Franklin, and would have pinned him if not for a run-in by Chris Todd with a folding chair. It is unclear whether Tubs fired him while still dazed or during the post-fight interview with Mean Steve Ensminger, but for all purposes, their relationship was over.

I heard this from a friend who works for Jimmy Sexton, Tuberville's agent, so I am sure it is true.

What's strange is in the past CTT stressed how important it was for a new coach to fit in with the rest of the coaching staff. You know no matter how good of a coach he was, if he couldn't blend well with the others it didn't matter. That is the only thing that makes me wonder about the rumors that he was forced into hiring Franklin. Of course if that was the case then he surely couldn't fire him then, right? OK, I am confused again.

I don't feel too sorry for him. He's still getting paid and he has great material for the next book.

Who is that girl who helps him load his car in the video of him leaving?

7:56 PM
Blogger Bulldog354 said...

I feel bad for the guy myself...he didn't look like someone relieved to be leaving a situation he hated on that video of him packing his car up.

I think that we'll look back on this after everything is out and realize that it wasn't CTT taking a risk on CTF but CTF taking a risk on coming to Auburn.

I don't think Auburn fans in general are willing to take a step backward for the prospect of taking a giant leap forward.

After losing to Vandy, I would have voted to let it ride with CTF and see what happened.

What are we playing for at this point?

I think overall, maybe they were trying to do to much in too short of a time. And I think that CTF might have oversold himself, with the whole overnight transformation thing. And, I surely believe that Chris Todd was and is out of his league. At this point, even more than ever.

Whether that rumor is true or not. I am not ever feeling sorry for tony franklin. He's getting paid 275k for not even a years worth of work. I will gladly trade places with him. And the whole loading your car up in front of everybody playing the victim is very lame.

Is there a worst spot on ESPN than Dr. Lou? Seriously.

we had a guy at work several years ago lose it. Flipped out kinda like this description of TF, yelled at people and was real manic. We demoted him, then he quit and went to work at the YMCA which was weird for an executive with 20 years experience. I quit going to the Y because he would stare at me and smile...kinda freaked me out.

Lou's weekly "Pep Talks" were pretty bad...but that's just splitting hairs.

I stand corrected, Pep Talk far exceeds how terrible Dr. Lou is.

did anyone listen to TigerTalk? CTT made a statement and then said there would be no questions about the firing.

He did take the blame, although it was very direct.

what was your thoughts on it?

Jay,
Did you catch that murderer at the fair tonight?

Crazy stuff.

Blogger ADP said...

Murderer at the fair? What's that all about?

Who thinks they know what will happen Saturday? For the first time this year, I have no opinion. It's been clear that I don't know, so now I am being clear and saying I don't know.

The defense will score enough points to win the game, that's my prediction/hope.

Yeah, there was an escaped murderer from Mexico that they found at the Montgomery fair.

Gotta love the gump.

Phred, what's going to happen is some sloppy football. So, not a whole lot will be different. We will run it a little more and discover that we're not quite as good as we thought we could be since we left our identity on the turf at Jordan Hare last November. My only hope is that Lester and Fannin get significant carries. Tate's a good bruiser but that's about it. I wouldn't mind seeing a two back set with Tate as the big boy.

He's Mexican? And he killed a US citizen on US turf?

Hmm...

Alan Gump, were you at the fair? Jay G is supposed to be there.
