Tuberville speaks, 10/12
OK. Here is what Your Head Coach had to say today after his team's 25-22 loss to Arkansas.
- On the offense and where it's headed: "It's going to look different."
- Expound on that: "We'll have a plan. We'll start that plan this week. As we go, we'll get better at it. This time in two weeks, we won't be deviating from it. We'll be in here saying: Hey, it worked, it looked good, we're going to keep doing it or well, it's not very good but it's what we're doing and we'll keep working on it."
- On the possibility of playing freshman Barrett Trotter: "If we did decide to do that and there was an agreement in terms that he wanted to do it, we wouldn't play him four or five plays. We'd put him out there and let him go and get him ready because I think that he could help. Again, there's a lot of water to go under the bridge to see if that will happen."
- Expound on the Trotter idea: "Say we go in and talk about it and we give it a shot and then we practice it for four or five days and then I say it's not going to work -- then we won't even go with it. I'm not going to go into a game with him and say we're going to play him four or five plays or 10 plays here and five plays. I'm not going to do that. If we're going to play him, we're going to play him. But it's got to be mutual."
- On Neil Caudle: "We're going to give him a shot. Probably what we do is, if Barrett came out, we'd compare them to see which one we thought knew more about what we were doing and could get it done. I'm not just going to throw Neil under the bus. We're going to give him a shot. That's what I'm saying. Whether Barrett comes out there or not, Neil will have an opportunity."
- On Chris Todd's immediate future: "We wouldn't be talking about these other things if we thought Chris could get it done. That doesn't mean he can't. I just think Chris' arm, if you look at it, isn't 100 percent."
- On Kodi Burns' role: "We've just got to get some continuity. You can talk to Barrett Trotter and Neil Caudle and "all those guys," but Kodi is a guy who's going to have to be a factor for us. He has good feet, good legs, can run, can make plays. He's got some experience. He'll get better. He had some problems yesterday. He's worked through them. He's coachable; he’ll listen."
- On the possibility of Tray Blackmon needing surgery on his right wrist: "They're trying to decide. We've been trying to put it off. He's done good on kickoff coverage but it's hard, and it would be on any of us, to put that hand in there on contact. They're going to have to decide what they're going to do with it. We don't want it to be a problem for him 15 years from now."
- Injury summarization: He said both Jerraud Powers (hamstring) and Antoine Carter (ankle) are "50-50" for the West Virginia game. You read about Tray Blackmon above. Ben Tate injured a hamstring last week and didn't feel good enough to play a major role last night. Brad Lester took a pair of blows to his injured right knee last night and asked for a substitution.
- On his decision to make coordinators off-limits to interviews after the game: "It was a tough night. Tough night. I was almost not available."

neal was an a four star elite 11 qb that had better numbers in spring than either of our starters.
have we seen any of our committments renig
I personally watched Neil Caudle throw three interceptions during a situational scrimmage last spring.
Those are the numbers coaches remember.
I think a few commitments are wavering, but the vast majority are solid commitments.
Auburn has some niche guys (ie short wideouts) that don't have a ton of value on the open market, so to speak.
As such, I don't anticipate a flood of de-commitments.
Whats the odds of Trotter playing?
Trotter ...
My opinion 16 hours ago: 1%
My opinion right now: 20%
You odds on Burns and Todd splitting time vs. just going with Burns 100%?
Jay, the impression I got from the Arkansas game was that it was a try out for a QB. They gave both Kodi and Todd plenty of chances to show they could get it done. They hoped to decide between the two. The answer they come up with was that neither could do the job. Is that your impression?
I do think that they didn't think Arkansas could win and wanted to decide on a QB before the WV game. I may be wrong, but that is the impression I had of the game.
Also, Todd has gotten worse. The Arkansas games was by far his worst game. The first few games of the season I felt he looked good, even with a weak arm. He got the ball where it needed to be. It seems that he can't handle another QB getting snaps. It seems to affect his confidence. If that is the case, he doesn't need to be the starter. Any QB with that fragile of an ego will never be consistent. There will always be an excuse to fail.
Sensible, I just can't gauge that right now.
Their primary thing right now is deciding what to do with Trotter. There is a sector of people inside the program who believe he gives Auburn its best chance to win.
Ok. Thanks for the answer.
all this Barrett Trotter talk has thrown me for a loop. or maybe it's because I feel Tubs actually gave us a bit more truth in those quotes. admitting Todd's arm isn't all there? really? finally. sounds desperate.....really desperate.
I'll say this: Auburn/Tuberville is being very careful about making a decision on Trotter. The freshman will make the final decision about his status...
you've gotta make sure the parents are on board with this first, right? if he was your son at this point in the season, would you agree to this? his first playing time period 8 games into the season @ WVA on ESPN? wow.
Mr. Sensible,
I agree with your comments on Todd. He does not handle things mentally well right now, so bringing him in other than starting him produces nothing.
JAyG, it is soooo hard to believe that Trotter is going to give them the best chance to win. Tell me your guess(i know that is all it is) on why they may think he gives them that BEST chance?
Burns was bad last night.
Todd was unplayable.
The threshold for Trotter really isn't that high.
Trotter's peeps will be surveyed, yep. Being done today.
The problem with the AU offense is the SPREAD or what they are running up till now, requires the QB to be the major focal point and we simply did not have the QB play necessary to make it work.
remember when having the Todd/Burns 2-headed monster was a "good problem to have"? August seems soooooo long ago.
Scottie B,
Like the Counting Crows said,
"August...and Everything After"
Tuberville insinuated that Auburn will be moving away from the spread as the season progresses
As yesterday's video showed, they have installed an "I" formation.
I added supporting quotes to the top of the blog entry ...
please tell me you're joking Jay...the only "I" formation I saw yesterday was the fans lining up to exit the stadium while Auburn still had the lead.
Jay,
You hear anything on possible oc candidates?
If they're moving away from the spread, why give the keys to a freshman who ran nothing but the spread in high school? Not saying I'm against it, just seems strange.
I'm getting more confused as the days go on.
the Counting Crows, that's a good song. i had forgotten about that album. thanks for the reminder.
On the bright side Jay, I seriously doubt the budget cuts at the Advertiser are gonna get you. Besides bama winning, the only other thing better from a media standpoint in this state is when Auburn stinks. Both events occurring at the same time? Randy Kennedy and the other red elephant club membership carrying media folks are giddy.
I dig the "Your Head Coach" intro...really nice touch!
Kris,
Do you get the Press-Register?
I haven't heard anything on OC.
This coaching staff is far more concerned with avoiding a HC search than beginning an OC search.
JayG,
I heard that CTT stated today that he did not want his Assistants available after the game because it had been a "long difficult night". But he allowed Todd to deal with the questions from the media? Don't you think that is very very poor on his part? I think it is ridiculous.
I'll add that to the blog post.
(It was my question and I forgot it. Ugh)
So Caudle threw a few picks in a scrimmage....how about C. todd being "unplayable" since he ARRIVED?
Some reps in practice would be nice and getting better by doing it.
Piss poor evaluating of talent IMO - which isn't hard for D coaches but the O coaches have sucked for TEN FRIGGIN years at it.
Want to see how much better the D coaches are at talent evaluating?
Tune into Fox right now and watch former WR K. Dansby and former TE J. Ratliff - along with walkon R. Hood play for $$$.
Chris In Inverness - (couldn't get my poassword up)
campfire tonight? If so, what time?
WR K. Dansby??
Dansby was a wideout once upon a time.
Not sure on the campfire. Do you think there's interest?
Dansby was switched to defense after coming in as a wideout out of Birmingham.
Ratliff was a 5 star TE out of Ga.
Chris
did not know that.
If we lose every other game, but beat UA and allow CTT to stay, what would that say about AU people?
I can't believe we would switch to the I formation this far into the season. I could see maybe sticking another runningback in the backfield and getting rid of a wideout. I could also see lining up a tight end. I would then expect to see Burns running the option, but out of a spread formation. He would also have to throw. No, we probably wouldn't score a lot of points, but maybe the offense could stay on the field long enough to work up a sweat.
Chris-right on.
This is the same coaching staff that played Daniel Cobb over future NFL starter Jason Campbell. Tuberville said he didn't want have to run a high school offense for Jason.
Funny how he changed his mind on that this year.
They also started Tre Smith over future NFL draftpick Kenny Irons in the '05 opener.
Borges came in and finally put the 2 best running backs we've had in 20 years on the field at the same time in '04. That never occurred to the offensive staff before that? Geniuses.
Yep. Big recruiting battle between AU/UA with Bammers saying by switching KD we renigged on a promise he could play O.
There's a handful of guys who came in as O guys and went on the be NFL players on D.
Question: Did the team huddle saturday? I remember players saying they were confused by not being able to huddle up.
Oh and great TO there AZ coach.
Chris in Inverness
By the way, I saw in one of your articles where Bosley said "There's no panic". The next time you talk with him, please ask him when the appropriate time to panic is. At first I thought we lost to the worst team in the SEC. After reflection, I find that I was wrong. Arkansas just moved up to 11th.
What keeps me scratching my head is how piss poor the WRs seem to do. They NEVER get better.
Don't tell be T. Hawthorn doesn't have talent. Slaughter was a top flight recruit, #1 rated WR in Ga. coming out.
Greg Knox can't get his players to get better and THAT's A big problem.
Chris in Inverness
Chris,
Hawthorne had talent and due to unfortunate circumstances now has something akin to post traumatic stress disorder.
Dude, the whole thing is mind boggling. I doubt I'll have much to say from here on out, until we get started in the coaching search. There's just nothing to talk about as far as AU football goes.
watching the replay...its brutal. Funny quote, last night wife and I left the game with 8:00 minutes left, we heard people scream at the tailgate area, guy next to us said we must have gotten a 1st down, priceless.
What channel is the replay on?
If I were to rank the SEC teams today, does anyone think that we are better that the 9th or 10th best team?
I would say that every team in the East except UT is better. Then we know that LSU, Ark and Bama are better. Ole Miss is close. That leaves MSU and UT below us.
This for a team that was picked to win the west.
2009 quarterbacks
1. Chris Todd- Sr.
2. Kodi Burns-Jr.
3. Neil Caudle-Sr.
4. Barret Trotter-Fr.-depending
5. Raymond Cotton-Fr.
5 quarterbacks on scholarship, thats alot, I feel one of them quits the team, what do you guys think, 5 scholarship players, not one worth a damn.
It really looked like our defense wasn't putting forth the effort in the highlights I saw. The play where Smith broke loose for the go ahead touchdown it looked like Zac Etheridge was just jogging after him like he could really care less if he scored or not.
Maybe the players are just saying the hell with it.
Tray Blackmon-wow, possible season ending surgery, that leaves his sr. season left, thats even if Josh Bynes lets him ever see the field again. Dont get wrong, I love to see Tray play but he cant stay healthy and his injuries have not allowed him to fulfill his potential.
I cancelled my subscription last year after signing day when they chose to put a picture/headline of julio rather than something about a trajedy that involved children
Someone mentioned starting Cobb over Campbell. We damaged Campbell early on in his career playing him too early. It was a game against Syracuse and a guy named Dwight Freeney put a beating on him. Campbell wasn't ready. Cobb had talent, but was certainly not a great QB.
Now we have the opportunity to do the same to Trotter. As the Titanic sinks, Trotter being asked to come in and start bailing doesn't make sense. Don't waste a year for 5 games.
Missed Topic- Senior Class
Each week as I go to the games I buy a program, I look to see what seniors are on the program. I have just now figured out that we have one of the weakest senior classes I have seen in quite some time. We have tons of talent coming back in 09 barring Sen'Derrick and AC dont go pro. Here is a review of the seniors.
Robert Dunn-Has made some plays this year, but otherwise 3 years of doghouse.
Rod Smith-Good auburn man, but a walkon no doubt.
Jason Bosely-Great student, leader and Auburn man, but by far an all-sec performer.
Tristan Davis-Human Injury clone, the kick return this weekend was his career highlight.
Tyrone Green- He has been a highlight in a bad bad year for our offensive line.
Chris Evans ans Courtney Harden- 2 small all heart linebackers who have filled in admirably but who are overachievers.
what do you guys think,...
"Tristan Davis-Human Injury clone, the kick return this weekend was his career highlight."
I'd go with the KY game a few years ago.
Tyrone Green routinely whiffs on blocks like a bull fighter without the red cape.
see mike problem with that no one remembers that, i hear tristan davis, i think injuries....
also i forgot on the program was walkon charles ojiumunoto? spelling, never heard of him, is that the actor from amistad..?
This comment has been removed by the author.
Tyronne Green has not played well this season.
I mean, he's been OK.
He is supposed to be really good.
Who knew that Chaz "Chopper" Ramsey was the glue holding the line together?
Jay, I think that speaks volumes about how SUCK this offense is. Green will be a first day guy in the draft but AU has basically taken a srtength of the team, turned everything upside down and made them a weakness.
Too many veteran players out there not to be productive.
Jay,
seems all weekend, even today, people have come to the conclusion that it was either franklin or tommy's boys (asst. coaches) and we know the choice he made. Schlabach on CSS said he called Franklin for a comment and all he said was long story.
Have you made contact with Franklin?
Is it pretty much what we think or something totally opposite?
ok here it is..if trotter gave us the best chance to win wouldnt he have already played. somebody told me to come back t o realality when i metioned lane kiffen as a possible replacement for franklin. the fact is we are in trouble. buckle down and we will find out who the real Auburn people are and who just jumped on the band wagon. Maybe we still get 7 or maybe not. all I know is I'm still here and i've been here before and I will be here again. WAR DAMN EAGLE
i agree, i am a die hard, i am glad until the uga game i wont have to spend money to drive up there and waste my money, too painful to watch, i am focused on recruiting and 2009, ha
would expect todd to be out on that 5 qb's on scholly list if he sits the rest of the way.
Isn't it a litle bit late for Tubby to conclude that Todd's arm isn't 100%? Hasn't that been obvious since the beginning of the season? Probably just a coincidence that he says this in public now that CTF is no longer on staff.
If Trotter can be the difference in even one game, if he can take us from 6-6 to 7-5 or 8-5 with a bowl game, the red shirt needs to get pulled.
Why do my posts keep getting deleted?
AU fans didn't really help Sat. night either.
As a long time fan who's been going to games since I was 5 I can't remember a time when I've been more dissappointed in the behavior of AU fans at a home football game.
Why were we doing The Wave in the 3rd quarter during critical drives? In a close SEC West game? The Wave? Seriously? What's next a god dang beach ball?
Second, I was ashamed at the number of people heading for the exits when the game was still very much up for grabs. Pathetic. Be a fan and support those kids on the field whether you like the coaches or not. Consequently, a lot of those fair-weathers came back in after we looked like we might win.
Third, don't ever boo a 20 year old kid for any reason. Get a life. If you are that wrapped up emotionally in a GAME that you feel it necessary to boo a college kid then you should probably see a phsyciatrist to deal with some of your problems.
I think Auburn has garnered quite a few Bandwagon fans and Sidewalk Alums over the last few years - maybe a tough season will get rid of them and they can go back to being Bama fans...especially since that's whay they acted like Sat. night.
Think I'm full of it? Ask my cousin and his dad who, for the last 20 years, have pulled for Auburn and/or Bama depending on who was better. They started this season "Auburn fans"...guess who's flag they're flying now? And I guarantee you they are not an anamoly.
War Damn Eagle.
PS It was great to see that '83 SEC championship team out there with Coach Dye at half time. Awesome. We need to bring in the '93 Undefeateds next home game.
Neil caudle is a stud
I mean he has talent-last time I checked he was an Elite 11 QB which is tough to do.
And anyways Trotter isn't nearly as good as the High School QB we are bringing in. Raymond Cotton. 6'4 215 4.6(40 yard dash) benches 315 looks like Jason Campbell
