The Big Board: Men

Something I'd like to do here is update you somewhat regularly (maybe every two weeks?) on how all Auburn sports are doing.

I know you're probably not interested in the minute details of the tennis team, for instance, but my guess is you're willing to invest five seconds to see how they're doing in a general sense. Since Jay Jacobs says he's striving to make Auburn the nation's "pre-eminent athletics department", let's take a peek at Jacobs' progress.

Here's your glance:

FOOTBALL
2008 final record: 5-7 (2-6 in SEC games)
2008 finish: tied for 4th in SEC West
Next game: A-Day game, 3/28/09

BASKETBALL
2008-09 record: 5-4
2008-09 rank: none
Next game: @ Virginia, 12/20

BASEBALL
2008 final record: 28-28 (11-19 in SEC games)
2008 finish: 5th in SEC West
2009 opener: vs. Elon, 2/20/09

CROSS COUNTRY
2008 final record: Finished 5th at the NCAA Championships in November
2008 final rank: 13th
2009 opener: tba

GOLF
2008-09 record: 23-28-1
2008-09 rank: none
Next match: John Burns Intercollegiate (Wahiawa, Hawaii), 2/18/09

SWIMMING & DIVING
2008-09 meet record: 2-0
2008-09 rank: 8
Next event: vs. Texas, 1/8/09

TENNIS
Fall season record: 11-13 (4-7 in SEC matches)
Fall finish: 4th in SEC West
Spring season opener: Auburn Spring Classic, 1/23/09

TRACK & FIELD
2008 final outdoor record: Finished tied for 2nd at NCAA Championships
2008 final outdoor rank: 2nd
2009 outdoor opener: at Georgia Tech, 3/27/09

Thanks Jay. The one thing I really liked about PM's Tracking the Tigers blog back in the day is that he'd update us on the progress of various Auburn sports, without, as you say, bogging us down in the minute details of tennis. I appreciate that very much. One more thing that truly makes this the HABOTN.

Definitely liking our well-rounded blog. I'd also like to make sure we note the APR of women's tennis.

Seriously, though; even though football pays the bills, it is nice to keep up with how the other sports are, or are not, doing. I'm pretty sure I won't get this through another medium here in Charleston. Keep up the good work JGT.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little more coverage on the Women's Bball team... seeing as they are actually doing something positive this year.

Morning All!! Passing through all the notes from yesterday, and there was something mentoined about an article by someone named Whitlock? It had to do with the coaching search. Just wondered if anyone has a link or can direct me to it. Also SteveFC got me just a touch giddy with the supposed staff talk, and just wish we had a little more of an idea where Coach C is looking for coordinators. Then I came back to earth and remembered we are really not going to know things about this group until it is released from the actual parties involved. Personally I kinda like that idea. Unfortunately I'll have to learn to be patient again.

I just read the article by Whitlock. It just bothers me when there are inaccuracies in an otherwise good piece. He states that Tuberville had 110 career wins and was 7-3 vs. Bama. He was actually 7-7 vs. Bama in his career.

Also, the article says that in 1984, Nolan Richardson was the first black basketball coach hired in the SEC. Arkansas didn't join the SEC until 1992, so that is also incorrect.

I guess I'm just being picky.

8:09 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Wow, quite an article. And I think one passage kind of says alot:

Anybody, regardless of color, can get screwed when a group of ego-driven politicians decide what to do about a coach who threatens their influence.

And after reading it, I hope the Auburn faithful (including the ego-driven politicians/boosters) will be patient, and allow Chizik to mold this team into a winning organization.

8:09 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Luv- My gut feeling has the following:

OC/QB- Pat Nix
WR- Shane Wasden
OL- Stacey Searles
TE- Joe Whitt Jr.
RB- Bouleware

DC/DE- Rodney Gardner
DT- Mike Pelton
LB- Joe Whitt Sr.
DB- Jeff Koonz

That is just an educated guess on my part.

8:19 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wow Eddie, isn't Bouleware the only one on that list without Auburn ties?

8:21 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

In your humble opinion, do you feel they are good choices?

8:22 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- That would be correct.

Luv- I like the majority of them. I would be questionable about Nix, but I actually am not so much the doom and gloomer about him.

Dye said we needed a bunch of coaches that loved Auburn. I take that as a hint of how the staff will be made up.

8:24 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

They look like a downgrade to me, but I could be wrong. I do think we will miss Gran, Nall, Price, Dunn, and Willis.

8:24 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does Joe Whitt Sr want to coach again?

8:26 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think adding the whitts are a great idea and I would love to see Rodney Garner as the DC. Patrick Nix is probably a solid choice at OC, although it may disappoint some that want a more flashy offense.

8:27 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I, for one, am glad that Chizik is starting with a "clean" slate.

8:28 AM
Blogger Howard said...

Steve, those are exactly the coaches I'd have on my list. Of those, I think Price & Dunn are the hardest to replace.

8:29 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I still hope that Willis ends up remaining.

I like Eddie's list in terms of good recruiters.

I would like to see Tracy Rocker return. In terms of all time players, he should be on the list with Sullivan, Beasley, and Jackson.

8:31 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I don't agree completely with that statement. Here is my comparison to the old staff:

OC- #@$@#$K to Nix- Anything is an upgrade.
RB- Gran to Bouleware- Preceived downgrade, but not sure.
WR- Knox to Wasden- Huge Upgrade
OL- Nall to Searles- Upgrade in my opinion and most others in the SEC
TE- Ensminger to Joe Whitt Jr- Upgrade, especially with recruiting.

DC in general: Rhoads to Gardner- unknown, Chizik will probably have a big hand in it, and if so, upgrade.

DE- Price to Gardner- Upgrade big time in recruiting, put probably not so much in coaching.
DT- Dunn to Pelton- Draw
LB- Willis to Whitt Sr- Draw. Whitt Sr is an awesome coach and good recruiter.
DB- Rhoads to Koontz- perceived downgrade and probably so because of youth, but potential is there to be a great coach.

My 2 cents.

8:31 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I like Willis also, and would like to see him stay, but if Whitt Sr stays on, there is no room for Willis. Whitt Sr is the Mobile guru and LB coach, same as Willis. The question to weather Willis stays is if Whitt stays in my opinion.

Blogger astatguy said...

Thanks, Jay. The internet is full of unsubstantiated opinions. It's good to see some facts.

The Georgia State University Athletic Director was fired yesterday. The reason for the firing wasn't made public for personal reasons. The centerpiece of her statement of pride about her work was the basketball team had a 2.01 GPA. hmmm

I think getting a football program going was the best thing done on her watch.

8:34 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

BTW I switched avatars. I wanted to make a statement about how much Charles Barkley loves white people.

8:36 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I disagree with Nall and Dunn. The secondary may be the biggest surprise because I have a good feeling about Koonz. I trust Chizik's opinion when it comes to defensive staff and there has to be a reason a young guy like that could follow him to Texas and Iowa State. I am hoping for something special there.

Knox is a big loss in terms of recruiting, but I don't know enough about Wasden. In terms of coaching receivers, I would be willing to give eddie a shot over Knox.

8:36 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I believe Jeff Koonz has a lot of upside, but I'm biased because I know him personally and he is a good friend of my brothers. So somebody may have to take my beer googles off there.

8:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The one good thing I think will come out of this coaching change is that the receivers will likely get a better coach. People have said we lack talent there. I don't believe that. I believe we have taken talent and turned it into caca.

8:41 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I generally agree with your statement there. I will be excited to see Pierre-Louis play next year.

8:43 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

astatguy- I agree with you about Barkley. I have had the fortune to meet him in Chattanooga and he was a great guy and was very cool to talk to. He loves Auburn and I am sure he is just doing what he perceives to help Auburn out, and I know most disagree with him about it.

8:45 AM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Absolutely Steve, the problem is/was not the talent. We have talent. It just seems like they were either coached down or not made a part of the offensive scheme.

8:45 AM
Blogger Howard said...

Right on about our WR talent. We have recruited talented receivers that should be able to play in our (or any) system, and we haven't coached them up. I don't think we had a receiver get remarkably better while at Auburn in the last few years; they got older and stronger, but I don't think better. Some went the other way. I know we'll miss Knox recruiting, but I think Whitt and Chizik will more than make up for it.

8:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I also don't buy the argument that we didn't have the players to run the spread. If that is true, the spread isn't that good of an offense. A good OC will be able to adjust his offense to take advantage of the skill of the players.

I will always be of the opinion that Brad Lester and Tristan Davis had talent that was really wasted. Injuries had a lot to do with that, but I think there was more than that. Davis, especially, had the potential to stretch the defense with his speed.

8:53 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

With the right coach our WRs will be fine. Anyone know how many 5* WRs Texas Tech has in their starting line-up? Zero. Crabtree is the only 4* if memory serves.

I have just come to the very sad realization that Tuberville will not be a part of the Auburn Family in any meaningful capacity until the Dye era is completely history. It will take CTT players to become coaches and administrators before he is welcomed back here, and that's a huge loss for us.

9:03 AM

Maybe it will work out for us.

Even though they did well, Taylor, Mix, Obomanu & Aromashodu never really reached the level they should have due to Knox.

Truly I don't think we've had a great wr since Frank Sanders, right?

WarEagleRK, just yesterday a coworker said, "I done ate." OOOOO, that flew all over me. I looked at him and asked, "You done ate?" And he responded, "Yeah, and I done done it too." Then he said, "I've already eaten." I said, "Much better! Thank you."

The Black Coaches Association is considering a suit to get more black college coaches. I'm sure we'll be front and center for some more bashing if that occurs, but maybe some other schools will join us. I hate to see Auburn become the example for such a negative issue.

If Auburn's administration ever needed a coach to win it's Chizik next year. If he doesn't turn things around all the arguments about "best fit" and hiring the best coach available will ring hollow. Now that Gogue has claimed responsibility for the hiring the fallout could reach his level.

Here's a link to the BCA article:

Anybody listen to Jox in the mornings? Jay Barker-Evans butchers the English language daily. Memo to Mr Evans - "hisself" isn't a word.

I listed to Jox this morning and Barker was late coming in. Missed the first 15 min. during that time there was just one phone call about Auburn. Everything else was up beat. As soon he got there the Hate Auburn crap started. I can't believe Del Greco puts up wit it like that. It was lie a switch got pulled and all the hate Auburn calls started. Man!!

If you don't approve of ...

"fixin' to" as in preparation
"jury" as in diamonds, pearls
"warsh"
"Coke" as any soft drink
"restrunt" where you eat meals away from home
"Saridee" the day of week football is played on (yes, a preposition)

and a whole list of others, might I suggest to you New Jersey or North Dakota.

I eat grits, occasionally say "ain't," am always "fixin' to" do sumpin, and don't really care if it's the nails on some Yankee's chalkboard.

Izzle, Izzle, War Damn Chizzle!

I tumped over the Duke's maranaze last night when I was fixing a samige for supper.

My wife asked me if I wanted a Coke. I said yeah. She said, what kind? I said Diet Dr. Pepper.

I asked what was up with her brother for the holidays. She said "gonorrhea."

I said, "What?!"

She said, "Yeah, they goin' to Bwaynos Ires after that."

I don't hear the word conversate very often. It doesn't illicit a visceral response. There is some controversy as to its legitimacy. I do enjoy word controversy.

BTW, I love hearing all of your stories!

I have a very dear friend from New Jersey. After she knew me for a while she admitted, "I didn't like you the first time I heard you." She walked into a networking session of a conference in Albuquerque and heard me and a girl from Kentucky talking. She said she knew immediately we were "dumb and slutty". I said, "How could you tell so quickly?" She said, "Your accent." NOTHING to do with WHAT we were saying, just our accents. I pointed out to her that it was merely that Yankee Girl Hate that some ladies from the northern states have for we Belle types.

She loves me now and I love her too (even though she is a yankee AND an attorney).
