Jay Jacobs speaks again on Tuberville
Jacobs was on "Tiger Talk" tonight. Here is what he had to say about the chronology of Tuberville's resignation:
He showed me his plans possibly for the next coordinators. When he got through with that, he said, `What do you want me to do?' I said, `I want you to do whatever you think is best.' I was thinking he was thinking about the coordinators. I didn't know. He said, `Ten years is a long time.' He said he would talk to Suzanne and think about it.' He came back yesterday and said he thought the best thing for him and his family was to resign."

I miss big ole backs like Davis.
I don't think you can blame Jimbo for Terry Bowden's short comings.
^^^Loves Big Backs^^^
So true RK...
Genetics has to play a role.
FSJ, Coffee and Ingram are quite a pair.
Who's in the hopper for your guys?
Joshua- Rusty Williams never met a hole that he didn't like to dance in. He made our OL look a lot worse than it was. It was very frustrating for me and the rest of the OL at the time.
Yes Mr. S., Tater Tot let SD languish and I never really understood why.
We had a future 8,000 yd. NFL rusher and pro bowler in the backfield all for naught.
Trent Richardson from Escambia Florida...
That is if we can hold of UF. He's currently committed to us though.
Sensible,
I agree in part. Prolly a combo of Bowden's coaching and Jimbo's recruiting, or complete, utter lack thereof. Regardless, the names currently being mentioned in the lead (e.g. Nutt and Jimbo) don't do much for me.
Plus wasn't Jimbo just the QB coach under Bowden?
He wasn't an OC until he took the LSU job was he?
hold off not hold of.
James,
From what I've heard about Bowden, he probably didn't know Davis was even on the team.
RK- Jimbo was the QB coach, but he called the majority of passing plays while he was there. Tommy Bowden and him worked really well together.
Wasn't Terry the OC when Tommy left in 94 until he was fired in 98?
FSJ, that Richardson dude looks like a stud.
Hope Florida gets him.
:-)
I'm just not sure why Nutt is on our list if money is no object in our coaching decision. Shouldn't we be swinging for the fences here?
What is Florida going to do with a stud running back? Use him on special teams?
Had we stuck to the offense we were running in 93, 1995 would have been a pretty good year for us instead of 8-4. The D was really young and started a ton of freshmen, but we could have overcame that by using Davis properly and just controlling the clock and keeping that D off the field so much.
Instead we go to a passing attack with a QB (Nix) who was more suited for the ball control offense we had been running.
All - On a side note, I know this time is a bit nerve racking for Jay personally and professionally. Has he heard anything either way?
Florida does lead the SEC in rushing this year.
AUBigCat - I'm not saying that it was handled right or that AU really wanted him to stay; just that its possible that they were willing to give him one more year and Tubs said no thanks.
I mainly wanted to point out that the fact that they paid the buyout doesn't necessarily prove that he was fired. It does prove that he sure didn't have the support he needed to be successful.
reponse to just win AU:
Ole Miss is an academic institution focused on challenging the intellect of their students. Football is an entertaining sidelight that allows for a brief bit of revelry before study returns on Sunday afternoon.
Ole Miss alum '71
Maybe Richardson can become a baseball player before he signs with Alabama. That kid looks the part of a big time RB.
If Nutt comes to Auburn, someone needs to notify the Lee County Police Department. He lead the SEC in player arrests for most of his time in the SEC until Fulmer lost control of UT 3 or 4 years ago.
Speaking of high school players, whatever happened to the kids from Hoover on Two A Days?
Sensi,
I think it turned out that all of the kids from Hoover were Rush Propst's illegitmate kids.
Something like that.
It's just not logical to me to pay a buyout that you don't owe (if Tuberville resigns), and to refuse a buyout that you are owed (if Tuberville resigned to take another job). Are the folks at Auburn really that nice? I'm having trouble swallowing that one...
But I will admit that I hope I'm wrong.
One more comment on the coaching search, and I've really got to do something productive here at work...P. Johnson @ GT sounds like a horrible hire too. What, are we just going to waste the last two recruiting classes? We'd have to start this year's class over from scratch. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, but he's not the right coach for AU right now. Any responses???
Oh, that explains a lot, RK. Sounds solid to me. Thanks.
Nutt = nut
I'm from Arkansas. Auburn can do better!
Joshua,
I don't think he'll come, but AU is suited to run his deal a lot more than the spread right now.
Just saying...
Joshua,
Why do you think Paul Johnson wouldn't be a good hire for Auburn?
Just curious.
BigCat...
Alot of people think that if we get him he has a good chance to start, which is AMAZING when you consider that we have Coffee and Ingram.
Strangely enough, I hope that Upchurch can get healthy too, because I think he is a difference maker.
Names like Nutt and Fisher just make me feel like I would need to get really, really drunk to make it through an AU football game next season.
JJ said yesterday that money was no object. Well that's fine and good as long as you know HOW to spend it. Any chump can go piss it away on a bad hire.
I hope some of the garbage names being tossed around in the media are simply speculation, misdirection, or brought up out of sheer ignorance.
Agreed Coosa, it's possible. I really would like for JJ's story to be true. That would make me feel that our admin didnt sabotoge any chance of us getting a great coach. Public preception just doesnt seem to be playing out that way. If I were a great coach with a bright future, I just dont know if i'd touch AU with a ten foot pole at this point.
Bowden assumed responsibility for playcalling duties from 1995-1998. Fisher had full control of the offense after Bowden left. Unfortunately I don't have the statistics, but I know we improved significantly. Heath Evans became the feature back of the offense
Anyone remember the '98 UGA game? We hit Evans on a reverse playaction flare route for about a 60 yd TD... one of the most beautiful plays I've ever seen. Unfortunately, that individual play was the only highlight of the season.
Joshua if we dont make a great impression with this hire, 4-5 of our top recruits will be wasted anyway and playing for our biggest rivals.
Hey Ivory Tickler, can you explain to me why no one at Ole Miss likes Tuberville? The only reason I have ever heard is "The only way I'm leaving here is in a pinebox."
Ok gang gotta do what The Man pays me to do. Check back later
Mwdeav I recall the play and it was a great play. Evans I would say has had a pretty good career in the NFL. I also recall an awesome run he had during the SEC championship game against Florida.
McLovin,
To follow up on that point ... Evans wasn't even "discovered" until Fisher had control of the offense. I think that and the fact that FSU has gone from 87th to 26th in rushing this year should put the argument to rest that he'd kill our running game the same way Bowden did.
His 2004 LSU offense led the SEC in rushing. That's right, his boys had more rushing yards than Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown in their senior seasons...
I remember meeting Heath Evans grandparents at a Taco Bell before the 2000 SEC title game and they saw my Auburn gear and gave me the heads up he was going to leave school early.
I didn't believe them.
I was wrong.
I personally thought TT was a great hire for AU and was sorry that we lost him, not surprised though. Ole Miss is one of the smallest schools in the SEC; we will never compete with the big boys on a regular basis; I understand and accept that. And I think a lot of Ole Miss fans are accepting in that way; we just don't make it into a 365 day thing.
I like Fishers balanced attack and we know Fisher is Lowders first choice. If Fisher came in and we could get Garner back and Searles I think we would be fairly happy. Who knows what is going to happen.
RK,
I just look at the commitments so far...they're all geared for a spread or multiple type attack. I'm not saying that Johnson wouldn't eventually succeed at AU, just would take a couple of years to get the kids in to run his power running attack. Right now, I personally think that "Boom" Muschamp is the perfect fit. I know, I know...no HC experience. I just think that he'd add some excitement to the fan base and bring in some quality assistants (R. Gardner, S. Searels, etc.) back to AU. Also, give Saban a run for his money in recruiting. This is a long shot hire, but money can heal a lot of wounds that Muschamp may have had that led to him jumping ship.
I'm stuck in Dallas at a conference ... access to email twice a day ... and dyin' ... must have infooooo ... help ... help.
Please tell me they didn't fire Tuberville so that they could hire Houston Nutt. The guy is an Arkansas reject. Please NO!
Why is everybody in love with P. Johnson. That ofense will work for like 3 years before we have to get another coach
>>>If I were a great coach with a bright future, I just dont know if i'd touch AU with a ten foot pole at this point.<<<
I concur.
But a whole bunch of money has a way of changing minds.
And never doubt, money is what its all about now.
RK & MW- Terry was the designated OC, but if anybody remembers right, we had a lot of delay of game penalties after he took over. I'm tell you, from hearing it on the headphones and being the OL Manager that Jimbo called the passing plays for the most part. He never held the title, but he did call a lot of plays. We had the delay of game penalties because Terry couldn't make up his mind in listening to allison and Fisher argue over which plays to run. Terry= self designated OC, but he wasn't.
Seriously, Jim. Houston Nutt? This is just a joke right? You guys are gonna make me wish muschamp was coming.
But I'm sure Ole Miss has some fans that do live it 365 days and I would think those fans will be very upset if Auburn took another coach from Ole Miss.
Nutt is a Tubs fake. The Nutt info is being spit out by Sexton. He is still his agent right? This is so reminiscent of Tub's rumors of the last few years. Nutt is simply posturing for the athletic dept over at Ol' Mess to pony up and spend some more money. There is no way that the admin can let Tubs go, for a worse version of Tubs. I going to simply disregard this rumor. Alright, NOW I'm going to do some "real" work.
Harrison - Why do you allege Johnson will "work for like three years"?
I just think people will catch on to it and how to stop it. There's a reason nobody really runs the triple option anymore, but that's just me guessing. I think i'm the only guy in here that wants Gary Patterson
If I were a great coach with a bright future, I just dont know if i'd touch AU with a ten foot pole at this point.
I disagree.
I believe most coaches suffer/enjoy the same ego as Franklin that allows them to believe that can overcome/handle/manage/better any situation.
Eddie,
I remember the mass confusion on offense when we got the ball back at the end of the 1997 Iron Bowl. It looked like Terry had no clue what to do.
Jim - Great avatar.
I agree with you Mon. Part of that attitude is what makes them succesful, the other part leads to their downfall.
1997 Iron Bowl. My first as a student.
I agree with you Mon
Oh, how I do love those words.
Yes Kristina...
Houston Freakin' Nutt
Go get him Auburn!
You keep deleting my posts on chatroll and I have a few words for you too.
Harrison, you're not the only one that wants Patterson.
getting Nutt would be like trading in a 2004 honda civic for a 2001toyota corolla .
Anyone think we'll have someone locked up this weekend?
Houston Nutt is gaining ground.
Two words if it happens: Unfreakin Believable.
That is not new blood, that is washed up blood.
you're welcome
Come on Houston!!!!!!!
Has anyone asked Bobby Lowder who he wants to coach the team?
Go back to work, faker.
Sean - not me
Faker - bring it
harrison and mrtommyd..
y'all aren't the only 2 who would be interested in having Patterson as AU coach
Friend of mine works for Colonial Bank, you want me to see if he'll call Bobby?
Give me Petrino before Houston Nutt. Give me ANYONE before Houston Nutt. Hire me a coordinator somewhere, an up and coming high school coach, a moderately successful little league pitching coach, just not Houston Nutt!
OK - Break down the Patterson love for me. Sell me on him.
That'd be great Harrison. And it would stop all of this guess work we're doing today
I don't think I'd mind Patterson.
How could Houston Nutt even be considered for the job after all the drama he had at Arkansas.
We don't need another Arkansas coach.
I really wish we had an ignore function on this blog...
Two members would have made my list within the last five minutes...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Crazy Ole Miss fans? Yeah, the same ones that turned against Archie when Payton went to UT. I just try and pretend those people don't exist in the world...same thing I try and do with crazy AU/UA fans.
Faker - I hear bama is back so I'm sure they have a blog where you could live. Better yet, how about a Gator blog?
Ignore
Monica, just pulled Patterson on Wiki. He's had a solid run at TCU and has been the head coach there since Fran left to go to Alabama. He's had 5 10 Win seasons and 3 Conference titles during his time there.
Ok. He runs the football first. has recruited some great rb's. Their defense has a lot of speed, especially this year's team. They pretty much mirror our philosophy. And they do all of this in purple jerseys with a frog on the helmets
This comment has been removed by the author.
Patterson is a solid coach.
He was Fran's DC at TCU. Replaced Fran when he went to Alabama.
monica is speechless at pattersons impressive resume
Monica, speechless....pfft!
Ignore
Paul Johnson would be fine. He will evolve with the defense. It is not like he wouldn't. I bet you will find that he has tweaked his offense over the years. Anybody that can turn Navy into a winner, knows what he is doing. Additionally, he would bring in quality players, IMO. To use the logic that people would catch on is too simplistic. In that case, any offensive coach would only be good for 3 years. That would describe a static world where nothing changes.
Denny just introduced the hammer to the nail.
No on Johnson....Yes on Nutt
I had a board member walk in and expect me to talk to him! The noive.
Well, y'all are right. He does look impressive on paper. I think Harrison makes the most salient point with the frog on the helmet tid bit.
And think of the recruiting avenues in Texas with Patterson.
However, I'm still a huge PAUL Johnson fan.
I don't think faker really has a job...
Maybe with Patterson AU can get a Texas QB...or 3
He sells fake iPods to fake college students in a fake town.
Monica,
We all know you are a huge Johnson fan.
haha, nice faker
How many decommits are we up to?
Faker - Which would explain my disinterest in you.
Harrison, I hate to point it out, but you keep spelling Chris Peterson's name wrong. It's not spelled with a P-E not a P-A! And BTW he is the coach at Boise St not TCU....
I know this was just a typo and you really want Chris Peterson to be our coach and not Gary Patterson. You're welcome, no need to apologize for the error, we all make mistakes.
ouch!!
Ouch and Mon lands a nice counter.
JOX reporting 0% chance of Leach to AU
I'm a fan of the Washington State Cougars myself.......
ehehehehe
hope that's not old news.
The Fisher talk is heating up. If Fisher is hired then Lowder gets his choice.
Fisher....
Good choice, iMO.
thanks for pointing out my flaws
Cougars, huh? Figures
mrtommyd,
Yeah, I checked out the short entry for Patterson on Wiki too, but does anyone have an idea how he'd be as far as recruiting goes? And what kind of offensive/defensive philosophy does he have?
Good!
Leach Zero per cent chance to Auburn= Good Thing.
Probability we won't have a head coach by Christmas= Very High
By New Years Day= High
By January 8= Unlikely
Anyone know what Jay G is up to?
If you can recruit to TCU, you can recruit to anywhere...
i think Patterson runs a pretty aggressive D, and an OU type O...i could be wrong though.
however, i do know the D is highly ranked nationally, and the O puts up pretty good numbers.
Why Jan 8th Denny?
What are the high points of Fisher? I've heard he's a really good recruiter, is that true?
If you go to any message board or blog site right for any school that no longer has a head coach, they ALL sound the same. Washington Huskies were talking up Muschamp. They all act like they are just a premier program sorta down on their luck right now. Auburn is more like that. The others less so. Just sayin'
I ask for someone to explain to me why fisher is a good hire? Other than he married a Au grad. I do not want anything to do with anyone who works for the bowdens. Been there! I doubt he leaves the cushy job of FSU for us, IMHO.
What's that really cool site with all the data and stats on it? I don't have it marked here.
Nutt and Johnson would make quite a package together.
All the bowls will be over and the announcement won't be too over shadowed by other events. Plus building in time to make sure of who in case number 1 choice backs out.
lost recruiting time would kill us if we waited that long.
Denny I think your time table is right on. I think a recruiting dead period is about to approach. Sinc no bowl practice really no need to make a rush hire. If not in the next week then not until
Jan. IMO
Adam,
Could be worth looking at then since aggressive D is what AU needs to stick with in the SEC and an OU-type O seems to be what we were trying to institute.
i think Patterson might have some longevity if we could get him...he's been at TCU for a while, and doesn't seem to have any desire to jump around.
Thanks Michael for the coaching combine
where is Jay G. today? haven't seen him around here for a little while.
I suspect that Jay G. might be getting some well deserved rest, after a marathon of duty the past couple of days.
Adam,
I bet he's getting some rest after 4 days of Tubs Tracking.
From the mouth (and arm) of his gunslinger.
Leach Leaving
Jay G. is gettin his sweat on at the gym.
Everyone is asking about Jay G. No one responded to my previous comment about Gannett making cuts yesterday and today....has anyone heard anything?
I would give my left Nutt to have Johnson.
Just adding to the Patterson (with an A) chat; The last 7 years they have the 13th best winning percentage among the D1 teams at just over 72%. Ofcourse the Patterson with an e and one t in his name is tied for first with USC and Texas
AU,
Jay G. talked about those cuts several weeks ago here. I believe he said there were going to be 10% cuts across the board.
Sounds like Leach is gonna be our guy, he withdrew his name from Wash yesterday and they hired USC's DC. Graham Harrell just said when asked about it "Don't look for Leach to be in Lubbock next season."
Make of that what you will.
Au allegedly started talking to him last week.
The gym was pointless.
My phone kept ringing.
New thread up.
There is nothing newsworthy going to happen in the coaching search for awhile.
I don't what basketball is up to other than losing to XU, albeit closer than I thought it would be, but still from what I have seen of Jeff's product, it is looking like a Ford Pinto right now. Or maybe like an AMC Pacer.
The Montgomery Advertiser announced 32 cuts, 16 actual and 16 positions that would not be refilled.
Jaywall - I don't think that means Leach is our guy.
I remember when Houston Nutt had to decide between a (Robert) Johnson & a (Casey) Dick for his QB.
Now that it looks like Leach and Muschamp are off the list (hopefully)...Fisher is a solid choice because he knows our area of recruitment (AL, GA,and FL). He is a recognized name that could stop the bleeding with commitments and add a few that we didnt have a shot at before.
Maybe he's not our guy, but that's just what I heard on espn radio during the Cowherd show so I figured I'd pass it along... could have nothing at all to do with AU, though I'm not sure what other schools are talking to him right now.
