Jay Jacobs speaks again on Tuberville

Jacobs was on "Tiger Talk" tonight. Here is what he had to say about the chronology of Tuberville's resignation:
He showed me his plans possibly for the next coordinators. When he got through with that, he said, `What do you want me to do?' I said, `I want you to do whatever you think is best.' I was thinking he was thinking about the coordinators. I didn't know. He said, `Ten years is a long time.' He said he would talk to Suzanne and think about it.' He came back yesterday and said he thought the best thing for him and his family was to resign."

Sensible,
I agree in part. Prolly a combo of Bowden's coaching and Jimbo's recruiting, or complete, utter lack thereof. Regardless, the names currently being mentioned in the lead (e.g. Nutt and Jimbo) don't do much for me.

What is Florida going to do with a stud running back? Use him on special teams?

9:45 AM

Had we stuck to the offense we were running in 93, 1995 would have been a pretty good year for us instead of 8-4. The D was really young and started a ton of freshmen, but we could have overcame that by using Davis properly and just controlling the clock and keeping that D off the field so much.

Instead we go to a passing attack with a QB (Nix) who was more suited for the ball control offense we had been running.

AUBigCat - I'm not saying that it was handled right or that AU really wanted him to stay; just that its possible that they were willing to give him one more year and Tubs said no thanks.

I mainly wanted to point out that the fact that they paid the buyout doesn't necessarily prove that he was fired. It does prove that he sure didn't have the support he needed to be successful.

It's just not logical to me to pay a buyout that you don't owe (if Tuberville resigns), and to refuse a buyout that you are owed (if Tuberville resigned to take another job). Are the folks at Auburn really that nice? I'm having trouble swallowing that one...

But I will admit that I hope I'm wrong.

One more comment on the coaching search, and I've really got to do something productive here at work...P. Johnson @ GT sounds like a horrible hire too. What, are we just going to waste the last two recruiting classes? We'd have to start this year's class over from scratch. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, but he's not the right coach for AU right now. Any responses???

Names like Nutt and Fisher just make me feel like I would need to get really, really drunk to make it through an AU football game next season.

JJ said yesterday that money was no object. Well that's fine and good as long as you know HOW to spend it. Any chump can go piss it away on a bad hire.

I hope some of the garbage names being tossed around in the media are simply speculation, misdirection, or brought up out of sheer ignorance.

9:53 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Agreed Coosa, it's possible. I really would like for JJ's story to be true. That would make me feel that our admin didnt sabotoge any chance of us getting a great coach. Public preception just doesnt seem to be playing out that way. If I were a great coach with a bright future, I just dont know if i'd touch AU with a ten foot pole at this point.

Blogger mwdeav said...

Bowden assumed responsibility for playcalling duties from 1995-1998. Fisher had full control of the offense after Bowden left. Unfortunately I don't have the statistics, but I know we improved significantly. Heath Evans became the feature back of the offense

Anyone remember the '98 UGA game? We hit Evans on a reverse playaction flare route for about a 60 yd TD... one of the most beautiful plays I've ever seen. Unfortunately, that individual play was the only highlight of the season.

9:56 AM

Mwdeav I recall the play and it was a great play. Evans I would say has had a pretty good career in the NFL. I also recall an awesome run he had during the SEC championship game against Florida.

10:05 AM
Blogger mwdeav said...

McLovin,

To follow up on that point ... Evans wasn't even "discovered" until Fisher had control of the offense. I think that and the fact that FSU has gone from 87th to 26th in rushing this year should put the argument to rest that he'd kill our running game the same way Bowden did.

His 2004 LSU offense led the SEC in rushing. That's right, his boys had more rushing yards than Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown in their senior seasons...

10:10 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I remember meeting Heath Evans grandparents at a Taco Bell before the 2000 SEC title game and they saw my Auburn gear and gave me the heads up he was going to leave school early.

I didn't believe them.

I was wrong.

10:11 AM
Blogger Ivory tickler said...

I personally thought TT was a great hire for AU and was sorry that we lost him, not surprised though. Ole Miss is one of the smallest schools in the SEC; we will never compete with the big boys on a regular basis; I understand and accept that. And I think a lot of Ole Miss fans are accepting in that way; we just don't make it into a 365 day thing.

10:13 AM
Blogger McLovin said...

I like Fishers balanced attack and we know Fisher is Lowders first choice. If Fisher came in and we could get Garner back and Searles I think we would be fairly happy. Who knows what is going to happen.

10:14 AM
Blogger JCS said...

RK,
I just look at the commitments so far...they're all geared for a spread or multiple type attack. I'm not saying that Johnson wouldn't eventually succeed at AU, just would take a couple of years to get the kids in to run his power running attack. Right now, I personally think that "Boom" Muschamp is the perfect fit. I know, I know...no HC experience. I just think that he'd add some excitement to the fan base and bring in some quality assistants (R. Gardner, S. Searels, etc.) back to AU. Also, give Saban a run for his money in recruiting. This is a long shot hire, but money can heal a lot of wounds that Muschamp may have had that led to him jumping ship.

RK & MW- Terry was the designated OC, but if anybody remembers right, we had a lot of delay of game penalties after he took over. I'm tell you, from hearing it on the headphones and being the OL Manager that Jimbo called the passing plays for the most part. He never held the title, but he did call a lot of plays. We had the delay of game penalties because Terry couldn't make up his mind in listening to allison and Fisher argue over which plays to run. Terry= self designated OC, but he wasn't.

Paul Johnson would be fine. He will evolve with the defense. It is not like he wouldn't. I bet you will find that he has tweaked his offense over the years. Anybody that can turn Navy into a winner, knows what he is doing. Additionally, he would bring in quality players, IMO. To use the logic that people would catch on is too simplistic. In that case, any offensive coach would only be good for 3 years. That would describe a static world where nothing changes.
