Keeping it real

Hey everyone. After a few hours of deliberation, I have decided to re-open the HABOTN for business. I have added an IP tracker to the site -- you won't notice it -- which will allow me to identify troublesome posters and handle them appropriately.

I can't believe that I now must spend time playing Daddy and doling out punishments for adults who can't act like adults, but I guess that's where we are.

Thanks to the overwhelming majority of the HOTTIES who make this site great.

TURNER GILL GETS RICHER: Yes sir. Auburn's search for a new football coach may be over, but people are still making money off the endeavor. Gill, the U. Buffalo coach, has earned an undisclosed pay raise at Buffalo. In exchange, he has agreed to not seek alternative employment for a year.

PAT DYE ADDRESSES THE PEEPS: Tigers Unlimited members received an email this morning from Dye addressing the coaching search and Auburn's decision to hire Gene Chizik. Though he basically rips reporters, I think this is a worthwhile read for a few reasons.
Auburn Family,

I woke up this morning with Auburn on my mind, which is not surprising since I went to sleep with Auburn on my mind.

This is a very emotional time for the Auburn family. We all have our own opinions about what is best for Auburn and about the impact that Auburn decisions will have on our lives.

I don't expect everyone who reads this to agree with everything I say, but I just want you to know what I feel in my heart. This time of transition we are going through now reminds me of the time in 1981 when I walked into a room full of football players who had many questions and doubts about me coming in as the new head football coach.

Their frustration showed in their faces, and anxiety was in their eyes because of the unknown. I had a simple message: Whether they had come to Auburn for the right reasons or the wrong reasons, they had chosen to get their education and to play football at Auburn University, which would lay the foundation for the rest of their lives.

I told them that Auburn had chosen me and that I had chosen Auburn. I asked them as a team to be loyal to Auburn and to love Auburn. I said that I would also be loyal to Auburn and would love Auburn, and this loyalty and love would be our common ground which would lay the foundation that would serve Auburn for many years to come.

There is a lot of misinformation out there right now. The media people have their jobs to do and should have our respect for doing those jobs. But unless an individual has served as president of a major university, has been on the board of trustees of a major university, or has been athletic director or head football coach at a major university, it is hard to grasp how the people in these positions make the decisions that affect so many.

Unless you have walked in their shoes, you cannot begin to understand all that is involved in the process of making these decisions.

In addressing the current situation pertaining to our Athletic Director, Jay Jacobs, and his decision to hire Gene Chizik as our new Head Coach, I applaud all parties involved in the process for allowing Jay Jacobs to do his job.

Nobody is more qualified to make this decision than Jay. He is a true Auburn man to the bone and understands better than anybody the kind of man we need to lead our football program into the future. Gene Chizik is that man.

Because of the years I was involved in football – as a player, an assistant coach, a head coach, and as a part of teams that won championships at every level – I learned something about winning. One thing I am sure of is that I know what it takes to win. Teams where everyone played with the same heartbeat had a chance to win championships; teams that were not able to play like that never reached their full potential.

We don't need to worry about what is going on around us. We only need to be concerned about what is going on at Auburn. And being the best we can be at Auburn will take care of what is going on around us. We are an Auburn family. Let's see if we can play with the same heartbeat.

I know winning is important to the Auburn people. But so is character. Jay Jacobs has it and so does Gene Chizik. Now we'll see if they can win. They are our team. I like it. War Eagle.

Coach Pat Dye

If you can stomach the language and the mental imagery, you be the judge, but it reminded me of an Auburn twist on The Aristocrats

Qualifying? Geez, it really makes sad/upset these kids cannot qualify. I taught/coached high school and the stuff they need to know to qualify is, let me phrase this.... minimal. Most can be learned by osmosis, just by being in class, not sent off to special tutoring from an "academic coach", which some schools do for certain students. I am not accusing any school of cheating or anything of the like, please comprehend that.
IMO, any kid who does not have a severe learning disability should be able to qualify academically for college.
Just sayin...

As a player and coach, Neil Calloway has 12 SEC championship rings. Most recently in 2002 and 2005 at Georgia as OC. This might not be exactly right, but pretty close to fact.

On the other hand, he didn't call plays at UGA. Once he was gone, they let Bobo call plays. I don't think thats a great sign.

Denny,

I'm a young guy and I have all the affection in the world for what Dye did and I've often stated he is the best coach in Auburn's history given his accomplishments.

But my older brother (Eddie4AU) worked with team during the Bowden years and while he is certainly aware of what Dye accomplished, he also saw some things from Dye that he was not crazy about. He does think that Dye wields far too much power in the Auburn athletic department, and if that is indeed true, then I have to agree with him that that is wrong if Dye does so.

I still respect the guy a ton for what he did, winning four SEC championships, putting us back on an even playing surface with Bama and getting the 1989 Bama game to come to Auburn. But there is also the 'paying the players' stigma. That was just plain wrong.

I think those are some of the complaints that people have with Dye.

As one who grew up watching Dye coach, I will always love what he did to establish Auburn as a top-level school. That being said, doing a great job coaching and building a program shouldn't qualify you to have a hand in choosing the coaches who follow you. Just my opinion, and I loved coach Dye.

Yeah, Denny, I did not mean to say that my brother is any great affection for Bowden. That's just when he worked there except for his last year there which was Tuberville's first. He and I can't stand Bowden any more than most Auburn fans.

Objective question here, though. How is the paying the players thing blown out of proportion? What am I missing there?

5:42 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

I respectfully disagree, I am sure Coach Dye doesn't demand a say or feel he is entitled, but I would say that building a program and being a successful coach would indeed qualify someone to know a thing or two about picking a coach. What would qualify someone to have a say about a possible football coach? Coach Dye has far better credentials than anyone I know of.

Coach Dye should be respected as any elderly person should be respected. However, as an '88 Auburn graduate, the scandal and subsequent probation created under Dye's watch still burns me up.

And it was more than a little grocery money.

Anyone see Josh Moon on ESPN today?? He did a great job and earned some cred in my book. Great job, josh.

Finescum on the other hand wouldn't name names when asked by bob ley who was racist. He curred , for those of you who knows what that means. Nice to see that on national tv.

I thought the whole CC thing today was a joke, he really takin a stab at MR s ? Ridiculous. Should this be something that goes unmentioned?

Anyhow, big ups to Josh Moon.

Man I hate it when people use initials and other catch phrases. I guess I am not hip to that kind of jive talk that goes on.

My point about Coach Dye is that to dismiss everything good he did over the 60 minutes stuff and eric ramsey is giving a great coach short shrift for his achievements. If that were the case, then the stuff that bryant got away with over the years should have the bammers not even referencing him anymore.

Even Coach Wooden is not tainted. There were issues about him turning a blind eye to a certain booster who made sure that players were taken care of. He didn't court this booster or anything like that, but he sure didn't go out of his way to dissuade players from going to this guys house for Thanksgiving dinner and things like that.

6:02 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Denny, I did not mean to imply that Coach Dye was not qualified to know a good coach. I just don't think it is in the program's long-term interest to have a former coach always helping DECIDE who the new coach is. The game changes and evolves, and it is good to get new blood and a fresh perspective on things. I certainly understand your argument otherwise.

Yes, no one can deny that Dye is/was an excellent coach, but like it or not the joke about Auburn football had been that it's history was of a cheating program and Dye was certainly aware of that but put a player and himself above the school and thus tarnished the schools good name.

Having lived out of the state of Alabama from 76 until 98, I can tell you that the only people who joke about Auburn football are bammer fans. The reputation that Auburn pays its players doesn't extend much out of the state of Alabama. Suffice it to say, unfortunately, if you think that is Auburns rep, then you have fallen prey to bammer propaganda. For every instance of what we might think is big, there are bigger instances of payola in college athletics that grabs the national spotlight and that stays in the national consciousness. Whether it is $100 dollar handshakes and money falling out of Emory bags at UK, Logan Young getting indicted and found guilty in Federal Court, Reggie Bush at USC, Point Shaving at Tulane, SMU and the death penalty, the list goes on. Truth be known, bryant regularly ratted on Auburn to the NCAA while the same body looked the other way while huge amounts of money were being paid to players.

Heck, in the 50's UK had to not play any games for any teams due to paying players and pointshaving. Some of those players were barred from the NBA.

Point being, what we think is a big deal, isn't.

Same goes for Bammer fans thinking the NCAA picks on them. Most of the country think that they are just getting what is due.

I just liked how he was so bulldog in his "there's racism there for sure" and when bob asked for names he says "well take your pick", i think lowder big boyed him and finescum knew not to ruffle those feathers. Seemed to take an about face in tone. That was my first impression anyhow, maybe i should watch again.

On the coaching and recruiting front: I think he needs to be out recruiting for sure, but he also needs to be getting his guys in place, bec. they will be a critical selling point to recruits. And we need to establish a direction for the style of O we will run. I don't think recruiting guys on D will be an issue right now, but guys on O could be a problem.
