LIVE -- Chizik/Jacobs press conference @ 1 o'clock

We're waiting for the participants to arrive ...

JAY JACOBS OPENS:
  • "He impressed upon us his blueprint to move Auburn football in the future."

  • "He was on the path at Iowa State to turn that program around."

GENE CHIZIK SPEAKS
  • "This is a very special day in my life. Jay, let me assure you: You hired the right guy."

  • "It was amazing how on the same page we were."

  • He's complimenting all the new stuff Auburn has built since he left in early 2005.

  • "There are so many things that indicate Auburn has a vision."

  • "The Auburn people? The Auburn way? I get it. I've been to some great places and not one matches the passion, enery and excitement of Auburn and these Auburn people."

  • "It's not just about championships. It's about the whole thing."

  • "Shortly after this is over, (recruiting) is where you'll see me. Today. We're going to recruit tirelessly, 24/7. We're going to work."

  • "I've made many great, great relationships with high-school coaches in this state. We're going to start in this great state of Alabama where football is very important."

  • "We have no secrets here. We'll have an open door for high-school coaches ... and particularly in this state."

  • "I want the Auburn football players ... to feel like they're back into an Auburn family. Some may feel it. Some may not. I don't know what's out there. I want all those guys to come back."

  • "We're going to move this thing in the right direction."

  • On the staff: "I have one goal: To make sure we bring in the best football coach/person/recruiter out there. That's my commitment."

  • On his offensive style: "It's 200 years old. On offense right now, you've got to run the football. That doesn't mean we're not going to throw the football. It means that you have to be physical. That doesn't pigeonhole me into any one offense. So many offenses are not one-dimensional anymore."

  • On his troubles at ISU: "When I took that job, I was ready to be a head coach. I had done everything I could do as an assistant coach. I was ready. It's not like I walked into that thing and didn't think it was a challenge. I had a blueprint in place. I put it in effect. I never deviated from that one bit."

  • How can he win over the fans?: "That answer is really easy. You have to win. There's going to be skepticism no matter who you hire. At the end of the day, what I do know is that this was the right hire for Auburn. I understand this place. I understand these people. I understand how to recruit it."

  • Why leave four years ago?: "My desire was to be a head coach. University of Texas had a great track record of moving guys on to jobs. I made the move. If I hadn't made that move, maybe I wouldn't be standing here today."

  • Staff revisited: "I've got a plan in place. I've got a really good sense of where I'm going. Some of (the candidates) are still coaching."

  • Initial reaction to being hired: "My initial reaction was `War Eagle.' It happened fast."

  • Joe Whitt Sr. is recruiting now. Phillip Lolley and Jimmy Perry as well.

  • "I love recruiting. I can't wait."

  • On Tuberville: "I have not talked to Tommy. I had a great three years here. I was very appreciative of Tommy letting me do my job. There's a fine line between coaching and meddling. I don't plan on micromanaging coordinators. That's why they were hired. I'm going to be out there and I'm going to be coaching."

  • "The expectations of the people aren't any higher than mine. My expectations are very high."

  • "Last season was a situation I hadn't experienced. We played with 11 true freshmen. We kept persevering. We learned a lot. I learned a lot."

  • Head coaches are big recruiters now: "That's who I have to be. When this is over, I'm hitting the road. I'm out of here. I'll spear-head that effort."

  • Last night's meeting: "We had a great meeting last night. I let them understand their leader is someone who loves Auburn. I love this place. You need to love the game. We'll hit this thing together."

  • Why are you the right guy for the job?: "I love Auburn. I know the importance of football at Auburn. I know the importance of football in Alabama. I get that. The coaches that know me in this state and the coaches who know me out of this state -- they know about my Auburn ties."

JAY JACOBS UP AGAIN
  • Surprised by negative reaction?: "I know the Auburn people are going to come together and know that Gene is the right man for Auburn.

  • Didn't acknowledge any other candidates.

  • "We didn't necessarily have a pecking order. We had a list of candidates we wanted to get to and he was on it."

  • "He'll re-energize Auburn with his physical, smash-mouth brand of football. All Auburn people will come together."

  • "We have agreed to terms in principle."

  • Said Jay Gogue couldn't make this meeting due to a schedule conflict.

  • "We didn't compromise our integrity during this search. I went through the front door. We're not going to through agents and all that stuff."

  • Discussing Carr & Associates.

  • How many interviews?: Won't say who and how many. "Gene was the only one I introduced the president to."

  • "There were certain people who declined to interview. Maybe that just weeded out some of the faint-hearted."

  • "We wanted someone who was a relentless recruiter, a guy with unbelievable character and integrity, someone who has been in the SEC and had been successful, somebody who has a passion for football -- Auburn football -- and his family."

  • Is money no object for assistant coaches?: "No object. Auburn people expect nothing less."

THAT'S A WRAP

He was asked point blank about a booster, and JJ said that we have a process and a chain of command to make decisions. He did not actually say Lowder was in the chain.

As usual with Finebaum's M.O., he says they Chizik threw out several shots at Tuberville. Statements like "I'm the right man", "I know what the Auburn people want" and some others. Anyone else take these as shots at Tubs.

Sounds like the usual Coaches press conference hackneyed statements to me.

I am convinced that Jacobs directed this search and the BOT is not involved. This has been the theme since Gogue arrived. It goes right along with the going through the front door thing. Gogue has layed down the law in terms of how things will work.

anybody know if there is any "leniency" in the NCAA rules re: visiting recruits after a coaching change? i.e. can new staff go visit a recruit if old staff already used up the allowable visit(s) for that recruit?

1:59 PM
Blogger Mark said...

Tarheel, he needs to call Bobby or Pat and ask him which is more important.

2:00 PM
Blogger Mark said...

on leniency. No, I do not believe so. They are also not very lenient on letting current players transfer after a coach has been fired. Kind of a crappy rule.

2:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

AU1N04, that is likely the pecking order. I am also pretty sure Dye got his suggestions in indirectly, possibly through Q.

I am sure Dye wants to have influence and does to some extent. He was obviously going to be there because he knows all the people involved, including the Chiziks.

Totally unimportant note- I went by Byrons BBQ at lunch before the press conference and Tubs and E Gran were in the back corner eating lunch. Some people went over to talk but they seemed to be mostly left alone. Kind of strange to see a big press conference about to start and the former big guy munching on BBQ. Chizik was not my choice, but I like his enthusiasm and hope he turns things around.

I give him an 8 out of 10...would have liked more specifics on the plan.

2:04 PM

This PC was very Shulaesque in its entirety. How many times does he need to say I love Auburn and I am the right guy for Auburn?

I absolutely freakin love it when they asked about offense and all he could say was I'll tell them the rb will run the ball, the receiver will catch it and the qb will throw it. Brilliant!

Well, I'll say this for Chizik. He doesn't sound like a retard.

Jacobs, however, is a total retard and totally out of his depth.

Great to see Charles Barkley throwing Auburn under the bus, too. Wonderful to accuse your alma mater of racism.

Dr. Gogue not being there doesn't bother me a bit. In fact, if he had been there I would have wondered if he didn't have something more important he should be doing.

2:10 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Barkley ... Chuckster, not HABOTN's preferred gubernatorial candidate ... is a provacateur. Nothing more.

He's a microphone seeker like his enabler ... the radio version of P.T. Barnum in Birmingham.

Chiz gets 7-8 in my book for his performance. I want the coach to say he's the right guy. Never heard specifics at one of these before. Didn't expect to hear them today.

Ultimately, it's about performance ... first test in February, then on the field.

2:10 PM
Blogger Howard said...

I've definitely settled into the "Chizik's the guy, and as such I'll be behind him 100%" phase. I'm still skeptical and will likely be until the staff comes together.

Any chance that Garner moves for an Asst HC / Recruiting Coord gig? I'm not sure he's the right DC candidate, but I guess that depends on how much Chizik will be involved on that side of the ball.

2:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think Gogue not being there is proper. The school president shouldn't appear too tied in with the athletic program.

2:11 PM
Blogger AUWade said...

Sure, I could understand the hands-off approach, but it seems that the President could be there to help introduce the new coach. That's a big representative of the university, if not the biggest. It would seem that you would want to support that person if you were the President.

2:11 PM
Blogger Adam and April said...

Wade, I thought it was very interesting that Gooouuuuuggge wasn't there either. Something seems weird about that.

A major university just made an extremely important hire, and the pres is absent? Hmmmm.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

A point on Gill that I heard on Rivals Radio today from a sr sports writer in upstate NY.

Syracuse did not bring him on board because he did not show the passion as Marrrone did. Like he didn't want the job. What if Chizik wanted the job more than Gill? Could explain things more than the white wife.

2:12 PM
Blogger Monica said...

So Turner Gill expressed his concern that race was an issue to Charles Barkley. It's not just Barkely's opinion.

2:12 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chizik has a white wife.

2:12 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

I haven't heard Charles say anything that wasn't true, he just forgot to point out who was to blame. He acted like it was the Auburn family who would have been upset with Gill, when it was actually Dye and Lowder.

2:13 PM
Blogger Howard said...

But perception is reality, and if a prominent alumnus goes on national TV and talks about racism at his alma mater, no one will care about whether or not the candidate in question was enthusiastic.

2:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

jhc, I don't blame anyone for being skeptical. We all have our concerns. We just need to wait and see the decisions he makes.

I didn't like the decision to get rid of Willis, but the obvious question is who will replace him.

I am also encouraged that they talked about his blueprint for Auburn. That is how coaches are hired. All prospective head coaches keep lists of staff candidates and have an idea of what they would do. It is that idea that is evaluated when picking the guy.

2:14 PM
Blogger Adam and April said...

If he can recruit Garner to AU, then that will settle my nerves to a large degree.

Anybody believe Chizik when he talks about AU being his dream job? I want to, and I also want to believe he'll be at AU for a long time (if he wins).

2:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

barkley for governor, where did you get your informatoin about Lowder and Dye being against Gill?

2:15 PM
Blogger Jet said...

If omeone else with a little more credibility toward sober commentary, it would be a major issue.

Barkley? Just not seeing the man who claims he was misquoted in his autobiography as a voice that carries a lot of weight in the world -- even if it is a loud one.

2:16 PM

I think Auburn being his dream job is the truth and probably what separated him from some other candidates, such as Gill.

Barkley demonstrating his racist philosophy won't change that.

2:17 PM
Blogger Adam and April said...

so are other SEC coaches doing negative recruiting against AU by saying to someone on ESPN that Gill wouldn't be hired bec. of his white wife?

Bammers calling us racist is a joke. They've never had a black QB start for a whole season much less a black HC.

2:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Monica, you are right about Lowder, Rane, and Dye, but it isn't because of what they are doing now. It is because of the perception, and that isn't likely to ever change.

Barkley for governor, where did you get your information on Lowder and Dye being against Gill?

2:21 PM
Blogger AUant said...

Might be the Prez's way of protesting the hire as well.

2:22 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I never really viewed Charles Barkley as a racist until today. Has anyone actually heard exactly what he said? Is that information accurate?

2:23 PM
Blogger Monica said...

A better way to protest it would be to quit. I'm not going to be pres of a place where the bot dictates the hiring of my staff. That's just me.

2:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUant, the president met with Chizik in Memphis. Any time Auburn is committing to a multi-million dollar salary, I would expect the president to be involved.

2:24 PM
Blogger Mark said...

show me one other PC where the President did not appear when the head football coach of an SEC has been announced. 1.

Seriously.

They probably had to call him and tell him that Lowder had hired someone.

2:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Monica, where did you learn about the BOT dictating the hirings?

2:25 PM
Blogger Mark said...

extremely accurate. Barkely is truly worried that His Auburn is racist.

Unfortunately, instead of going through channels to voice his displeasure, he uses ESPN.

2:26 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mark, Gogue met with Chizik in Memphis. That would appear to mean he was aware of the hire.

2:26 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

hmmm I think I liked Dan Mullen's introduction better, it was more exciting for sure.

2:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mark, Barkley has always been kind of politically incorrect. The problem is, I haven't seen anything to indicate why he would think this had something to do with race other than a black coach didn't get hired.

2:27 PM
Blogger Mark said...

sarcasm is a funny word. So is it's application.

2:27 PM
Blogger AUant said...

Sorry all...but I believe Charles is right!!!

2:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUant, what makes you believe it had something to do with race?

2:28 PM
Blogger Monica said...

What a freakin PR nightmare. Not to mention just the wrong coaching hire. Sad and disgusting.

2:29 PM
Blogger Howard said...

Here's the barkley quote:
"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s. "You can say it's not about race, but you can't compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."

Here's the link to the article on ESPN.com.

2:29 PM
Blogger Mark said...

I don't think this was a racist hire. I think Charles does. That is why he should have voiced his concerns to the President, instead of announcing it on ESPN.

He may well be right; but, there are better ways to treat your University.

2:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Monica, what is making you think it is the wrong coaching hire?

2:29 PM
Blogger Adam and April said...

Is anybody else listening to f-bum? the fallout is BAD, BAD, BAD.

2:30 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Barkley is right, AUant. I'm probably the only one here to agree with you, but that doesn't make us wrong.

2:30 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well PR disaster aside, if we end up winning some games next year, I'll be a happy guy. I'd rather have that than have a media darling come in here and stink it up. Let's go get some coaches and some players and get ready to play some football, I'm stoked!

2:30 PM
Blogger AUant said...

The better question is...What makes you believe it is not? I'm not saying Turner Gill was the best coach out there..however, of the ones that more or less would have accepted the job..based on what has been done on the field as a head coach you can't tell me that Chizik was more accomplished as a head coach.

2:32 PM
Blogger Mark said...

I think 80% of the fanbase either believes it is the wrong hire or has serious doubts. 30% of the 80% probably are in wait and see mode; but, they still have serious doubts.

I would say 10% believe it is good.

9% would support Auburn no matter what.

1% loves Auburn football and is sure he is the right guy. Oh, make that 1 person, not one percent.

Blogger Klaus said...

Can someone do some homework and find out what meeting Gouge had to be at today?

2:33 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

What if Gill was a bad interview? And Chizik was a better interview?

2:34 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I am certain it had ZERO to do about race and I am extremely disappointed that Barkley chooses to embarrass himself and Auburn with his comments.

I won't know for a year whether or not Chizik was the "right guy." If he wasn't, it would be because of very poor judgement and incompetence, not race.

2:34 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

What did Charles say that wasn't true?

2:34 PM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

Guys and gals I fully believe all the negative press we are getting on this hire is going to have a probation like effect on Auburn.

2:34 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Negative Press....negative press, you wanna talk about negative press...I just want to win a game!

2:36 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am deeply disappointed to learn that Charles Barkley is such a racist. I really never knew.

He even points out in the article why it wasn't a racist hire, namely because he felt Chizik's resume was the worst of all. That is truly sad.

It is people like Charles Barkley that continually damage the reputation of black head coachs by suggesting they should be hired based upon their skin color. How sad.

2:37 PM
Blogger Brad said...

Here's the fact, neither Gill nor Chizik has coached a game at Auburn yet. Relax. Charles is a windbag, but because he can play basketball and he's loud, he's almost always jumped at by the national media as the "Auburn spokesman". I would rather know what Bo has to say, because he actually PLAYED FOOTBALL at AU.

2:37 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

barkley for gov.-

how about this:
"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley,

I think he is wrong. I wanted Turner Gill more than Barkley.

2:37 PM
Blogger Just Win AU said...

Gonna be hard to win games when you have a hard time recruiting guys to play for you because of all the negative press.

2:38 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Klaus - Unless the alleged meeting was life or death he should have been at the presser. Period.

2:38 PM
Blogger KJtiger said...

You do not think that fbaum was going to give AU a fair shake do you?
Gill did not get the job because:
1. No ties to the southeast. you don't give a guy 3 years to build relationships with HS coaches at a major program.
2. His ties to Nebraska. If he was successful and they wanted him he would have been gone. (i would not blame him)

Believe him or not Chizzle seems like he wants to be in AU. BTW I think Willis has a white wife (not that that matters)

2:38 PM
Blogger Howard said...

Just my opinion, but I think it's WAY too early to think that it will result in "probation like effect". A solid staff with good credentials and an ability to recruit in the SEC will fix that. Did anyone expect fbum, or anyone else for that matter, to have nice things to say about ANY hire we made?

2:38 PM
Blogger Brad said...

And no, Gouge should not have been at the presser. He's the president of an ACADEMIC INSTITUTION. Jacobs has a job, and that is to run athletics. Let him do his job, even though he's bad at it.

2:39 PM
Blogger Monica said...

It doesn't matter if we win the NC next year. The fact remains the Mafia needs to go.

2:40 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

He said he THINKS race is the No. 1 factor. That's his opinion, and he certainly isn't alone.

2:40 PM
Blogger Klaus said...

So the bottom line is that Auburn should have hired Gill---regardless, because it would have been good PR?

2:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Just Win AU, I agree. Something similar happened to Auburn around 1970 that set the stage for Bryant to be successful.

Auburn had the first black football players on a major sports team in Alabama. Around 1970 coach Jordan told them they had to cut their hair and shave or they were off the team.

Somehow that got transformed into a racist action and Auburn recruiting suffered for years because of it.

This could end up having the same effect. The truth doesn't matter when public opinion comes into play, as evidenced by all the people on here making statements about what Lowder and Dye did with respect to this hire with no facts to back it up. Truth doesn't matter. Just perceptions.

2:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, JustWin, we'll have to hope they don't listen to the negative press...

2:41 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

yes, some of our former coaches had white wives, some had black wives. Going forward, it's obviously best if we hire coaches who aren't married.

2:41 PM
Blogger AUant said...

If Gill had bolted to Nebraska, then that to me would mean that he was doing a "GREAT" job at Auburn. That is unless they have Ath Dir that goes out and hires a guy with a losing record.

2:42 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Gouge most certainly should have been at the presser. For many reasons. The CEO must be at first, and most public presentation of the biggest hire made by the company in 10 years.

2:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's like trying to find a doctor with good penmanship, TarHeel

2:43 PM
Blogger hip-hopanonymous said...

Bottom line, no one knows why Gill didnt get the job except for the few clowns running the search. Everything else is speculation. It's not good for PR, but we are only 1 of 115 D-1 schools without a black HC. I dont think a recruit will think we are any more racist than any other school in the SEC.

2:43 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Oh well. Damage done. More years of trying to defend the indefensible.

2:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

KJtiger, very well put. I believe that is exactly why Gill didn't get the job. If he had been very successful he wouldn't have been the right hire because he would have bolted to Nebraska. If he wasn't successful, then it is the same thing. It was a no win situation.

That being said, I don't think Chizik was the first choice. My guess is that Muschamp was.

2:44 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Methinks you might be right, Steve

2:45 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think UT, MSU, Syracuse, Washington etc are all racist too. MSU is double racist.

2:46 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

See how easy that was?

2:47 PM
Blogger hip-hopanonymous said...

I havent really been following the Gill situation since Saturday.

Has he said publicly that he was not offered the job? Are we sure he wasnt offered the job and then turned it down?

2:47 PM
Blogger Adam and April said...

Just heard that 680 in ATL is reporting that Garner is resigning from UGA...don't know if it's true at all, but I sure hope so, if that means he's coming back to AU.

2:47 PM
Blogger Brad said...

Monica -

Not trying to get into an argument here, but Auburn is not a company. It's a university. If he was at a meeting that could get us a research grant, that's more important for him to be at because it helps the education at the college, and thus all of our degrees become that much more valuable. Unfortunately, as much as I hate to say it, football success doesn't matter when it comes to getting a job in the real world. Your education does.

2:47 PM
Blogger Mark said...

good point. Gill possibly being hired away would have been confirmation, that he was the best hire. That, or like Vince before him, he could have told his alma mater that he had a new home.

2:49 PM
Blogger hip-hopanonymous said...

Exactly, Standing Brad. Auburn is an Institution of Higher Learning that has a football team. Not a football team who built some buildings to educate athletes only.
