Nutt soon faces the music

Looks like Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt will become the first coach to earn money from the Auburn Coaching Search 2008.

He met with athletic director Pete Boone and university president Robert Khayat earlier this morning. They have discussed financial matters.

Nutt makes approximately $1.7 million right now. He's now in line for a significant raise.

Nutt is expected to meet with reporters in Oxford after the Rebels' practice today. The team, which finished the regular season 8-4, is preparing for a bowl game.

Jay -- Is Tub's helping in this process.

And, would he speak highly of the job?

I KNOW Larry Lacewell knows Davis but Jimmie Johnson is who CTT has always mentioned when asked about his style.

Blogger Griff said...

Tubs could speak highly of the job 'til he's blue in the face but the fact of the matter is that there are approximately 5.1 million reasons for him to speak highly of the job. Whether Tubs speaks highly of it is irrelevant because the writing is on the wall. Has been since, oh, November of 2003.

Auburn has internal issues that have kept one particular coach (at least one) from even considering returning to Auburn. Auburn's administration is about as self-aware of these issues as a skunk is of its own smell.

4:04 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

So if we hire CTT back, does he still get to keep the $5.1 million buyout of the other contract?

Chris,

Those players that Davis had at Miami and that he left for Coker were all top level college players.

Also, Davis kept Miami clean when he was down there too.

I don't think TENN is a better job.

UF & UGA every year and no recruiting base unless its nationally.

Not an easy place to recruit to and not a great talent base in state.

AU's got Bammer & LSU but I think the ability to get better players can be interesting.

My only question is whywould a guy like Davis stay at a school where football's a distant 2nd fiddle?

4:05 PM

I hate to be a hater, but I think UT is clearly a better job. They have successfully recruited nationally the last ten years, they have a 100,000 + stadium, they are the prime school in their state (all things that Auburn is not), and LSU/bama vs florida/GA schedule is about a wash. Plus they have a history of being patient with head coaches.

To an impartial observer, UT is better.

I think Leach's personallity and his love of his own intelligence wouldn't fly too well at Auburn.

I don't think his offense would do very well over time in the SEC.

Plus imagine the outrage when he gives up 50 or 60 in a game at Auburn.

4:12 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Sexton represents Butch Davis.

Tennessee USED to recruit nationally but don't now.

Its much easier to recruit locally on both the coahes and the players.

Having 12000 more people in the stands isn't that big a deal to me I don't think.

It is fun to read the stories and people's guesses, but we have to remember that even inside sources get lied to and manipulated. We won't know till Auburn makes the announcement.

I don't remember the wild scramble of coaches throwning them, selves at UT last month.

I do not see Leach as a primary contender. Him having ties to Tony "I am an idiot" Franklin doesn't help matters. If Leach became the head coach, it would be the most radical departure in terms of football philosophy that I can imagine happening at Auburn. He is a possibility, but I wouldn't think him the most likely candidate.

We can settle for Jimbo, though. He's a good ol' boy. He won't ruffle the BOT's feathers or those of its favorite puppet, Jay Jacobs. Let's be a proving ground for a 1st year HC.

Glad you like him, I'm sure he's an entertaining fellow.

4:47 PM

Griff. I think that was Leach that was Stoops OC in 99. Stoops says Leach is a great offensive mind, but never adds any additional comments about other aspects of him or his coaching ability. Why would he. He owns Leach. Usually hammers them by 25 points +

I'm not sure its Meyer's offense as much as it is the players. I think he stresses speed and athleticism as much as he does an offensive system. With all due respect to most of the SEC East, but Bama will be the first good defense they have seen since Ole Miss or UT.

The only reason they killed UT was UT's ridiculously inept offense. I still think the Gators will put up points on Bama, but they'll have to work a lot harder to do it than they have been.

4:49 PM

Leach was on a staff with Tony Franklin that the NCAA drilled back around 2000.

Mumme's ran up some huge numbers his first couple of years in the SEC and but never big yearly win totals. They scored tons and gave up tons and apparently violated several NCAA rules along the way.

Leach has the stain of that on him. Maybe he had nothing to do with those infractions at all.

Griff, Meyer has been altering his offense at Florida since he got there to better fit the environment, which is what a good coach does (Franklin take note), so the question would be if Leach would do the same.

the Kirklin Clinic in Bham is one of the top Cancer centers too, and it is only 1.5 hrs away.

I'm sure there are a lot of reasons coaches have for leaving or staying.

thought...it is HARD to believe that the powers at AU would cut CTT loose UNLESS they had a coach with = ability already lined up. That's why I believe JJ more than your peers (who seem to not believe as much as u do about AU administrators).

eaglesteeler ... No matter how much craziness we encounter during the next few days or weeks, your second point is very important.

If there's one thing I know about Auburn, it's that Important People have a plan and a backup plan and a backup backup plan when it comes to football.

They had Tuberville locked down a month before he was introduced in 1998. Reporters, me included, spent a month chasing false leads.

I suspect we're seeing a redux right now.

5:13 PM

Do not underestimate the probability of Auburn going Nutts. Think about it. Not only do we get a respected coach, but we also don't have to face him. That isn't even to mention that advantage of having the coach with the most psychotic look in major college football. Forget fearing the thumb, fear the Nutt.

Ole Miss has bumped Nutt up to 2.5 mil per year. I don't think we're going in that direction, probably never were. It was just something set up by Nutt and Sexton to get more money his way.

Time to go get some food and hang with the wife. I might be back later or drop by the campfire depending on whats going on.

A. I have Cowher on hold for my San Diego Chargers.

B. Tuberville had been ID'd in 1997 for the Auburn job ... Bowden backed into ATL to push it back a year.

C. That makes me think they've ID'd the coach again a year ago.

so then, it makes me think: a) Muschamp, and having to wait to make sure that the Horns don't back into the BCS game, or b) Petrino. Remember there was a report about raising 16-17 million in the Bham News (maybe it was in Scarbo's column). That would be the total for Tubs' buyout and Petrino's escape.

I think a lot of what we're hearing is the misinformation wagon running at full speed.

I'll be surprised if it's not one of these two ... and I'll let Fisher in on the game because I know he was a fair haired child to them years ago.

I'm not writing Muschamp out yet ... a lot of folks on the edges ... I'm here in Dallas ... they don't think he's leaving ... but everything he's said, leaves a little loophole.

Of course that could be my wishful thinking.

Butch would be OK, so would Paul Johnson. I would prefer them over Jimbo.

Sorry to see that defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads has apparently bailed already. I'd hoped he might stick around and maybe get some consideration for keeping his position as DC from the next head coach.

Hugh Nall declining to help out during the transition is something I understand and in fact am glad to see. I'm not sure AU could have taken much of his kind of help during the transition. These coaches (Nall and Rhoads) are still being paid...seems like they ought to have to do something to earn it. After all, their employer was AU even if their direct boss was Tuberville.

Rhoads leaving is huge. Losing Nall is also. There are others that won't matter, but those are two of our better coaches.

I saw we hire Charlie Strong as HC. He has great recruiting skills and has deep connects to the most talent-rich state in our area, FL. We promote Willis to DC and get Malzahn as the OC and let him bring his own asst coaches. It's a young crew and they're sure to make some mistakes but their energy would be great for the program.

I don't see how Dunn could advise Marks to comeback with all the uncertainty. With this, I assumed Marks and Coleman would be gone and possibly Powers.

6:44 PM
Blogger Romberry said...

michael: You think they should rake leaves, Roman?

Why the 'tude, dude?

Rake leaves? No. All of these men have degrees. They are still being paid. No one pays me to do nothing (though I wouldn't complain if someone would.) I just don't see why they can't do something for the dough. But ya know, if nothing else, sure...let 'em rake leaves. I'd gladly rake every leaf on campus, spread 'em out and rake 'em all over again for a six figure salary.

SFC: Rhoads leaving is huge. Losing Nall is also. There are others that won't matter, but those are two of our better coaches.

I agree that Rhoads leaving is huge. Nall? Overrated. Why some think he was such a great coach is a mystery to me.

6:46 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

To enter the draft when its niot the right move don't have much to do with the HC or staff.

Now coming to AU - I can see that but its PURE dollars and cents.

If you're not a first rounder - and you could be in 2009, you cost yourself money.

6:48 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Nall is generally acknowledged as a great offensive line coach, although I do suppose that coaching the spread may not be one of his favorite things.

Gran is the only other coach that I would consider a huge loss, although Dunn and Price are good also.

6:49 PM
Blogger michael said...

I yam what I yam, Roman. And that is humorous/sarcastic/dry but most definitely not tude filled.

Anyway, if Auburn wants to fire them, they can fire them. And then they would still pay them because that is what the contract that everybody signed said they would do. So, the ones who want to look good are recruiting hard in hopes that they remain at Auburn, while the ones who know they aren't staying are chilling. I don't see any injustice.

6:49 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Chris, a lot will be determined by where the players are forecast in the draft. I don't think being a first rounder is the criteria, although Marks would seem the most likely to have a chance at that. Coleman will likely be within the first 3 rounds. Powers is likely lower down and leaving would be a huge risk, a la the predator.

6:51 PM

TONY FRANKLIN SPOTTED!

My girlfriend and I saw Tony Franklin with another guy at the Jim N' Nicks in Hoover, AL tonight.

He looked like he had lost a lot of weight. He was parked behind me and had an A-Zone AU hang tag, then pulled around and went to leave and I saw it was a silver Hyundai with a "43" plate from Lee County.

The guy who was with him had on like a red coaches sport shirt thing. We followed him until he got on I-459 North like he was headed back toward Auburn, but I have no idea.

Just thought I would share.
